this place seasons meat well.  instead of a typical al pastor, they have a nice lightly spicy version of it.
fresh baked pan dulce
horchata was great, like the sweet and cinnamon ratio
since came late, meat was a little dry, plus it's not the choice cut and a little fatty, but still tasty nonetheless
this supermarket is pretty small, so I'd recommend going to the 5th st one instead.

One of my buddys has been raving about this place for awhile so after working on his car, we decided to pay this place a visit. Driving up, you'll see the typical supermarket but the nice surprise is inside.

There is a full on Mexican fast food establishment inside!

The spread is huge! Pork, beef, chicken, marinated pork, chile verde, Al Pastor! the list goes on and on!!! They even have Mexican style fruit juices! Wow!!

I ended up ordering their chile verde super burrito and it turned out to be a decent gut bomb.

We walked away fully satisfied and on the way out one of the cooks waved and smiled and that is when I saw the infamous seal of good quality.....The silver tooth. You know that the Mexican food is good when you see that silver tooth.

I will definitely pay this place another visit!!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!! Pollo asada burrito!

Very flavorful chicken that they chop up for you right there on the spot.  For about $8 you can get a burrito and a cup of their orange juice drink that is quite tasty and worth a try.  The burrito is quite large and I couldn't finish more than half of mine.

Plenty of seating inside and they take credit card.  Service can be a little slow and it's a little loud inside so you have to shout your order (which always makes me feel like an idiot).

Parking is awful.  I'd rather park really far away and walk than try their weird 4-car parking area right in front of their store.  But if I'm craving a burrito... I think I'll make a coworker take me.

I've been searching Redwood City for the perfect burrito for months now, and based on the simple chicken burrito I had there today, Chavez Supermarket ranks among the very best.  There was nothing extraordinary about the tortilla, rice, beans, or salsa, but the chicken had _so_much_flavor_.  Yummy!  My co-workers have been going there regularly for quite a while, and from here on out I'll be joining them.

I have lots to say about this place and I've had it bottled up for years.  So, here it goes!

I like the location, though parking there during peak hours must be a nightmare!  The staff USUALLY are friendly and try to help you out, but sometimes they get to you too late and you're already aggravated.  Their weekly offers are good and helpful with this economy.  Their food is truly excellent and they know what they're doing.

BUT, I am absolutely FED UP with their super small store.  You'd think with the money us shoppers are POURING into their store - they'd try to fix it up a little bit!  WHY NOT EXPAND?  When there's no room on the ground - YOU BUILD UP!  Have the taqueria UPSTAIRS!

I can't tell you how many times I've tried using their Orlandi Valuta (money wiring service) and I have to deal with the "BANG!  BANG!  BANG!" of the taqueria.  Which reminds me - the restaurant section is severely over-priced.  Sometimes they're not even that good!  Tacos from a cart, bus or Mexico itself taste way better!

And then, of course, they're making a tidy profit off that check cashing service - so they allow those people to get help FIRST, even if you wired money before them.  (Yes, I know that maybe the faxes take a while to get there, BUT NOT TEN MINUTES!)

Someone tell me how a pregnant paisana can get through the aisles of that store!  (Anyone?!)

It's such a shame that this chain can't invest the much money that I'm SURE they have to make THEIR client base happier.

I had a burrito here 3 years or so ago, but couldn't really remember what it was like, so I decided to go for lunch today.  And have to say I was a little disappointed.  I'd remembered them being a lot better

I had the regular chicken, which actually had a great flavor, but had a lot of fat & gristle as well, so that was sort of too bad.  The rice and beans, however, were delicious.  What really bummed me out was some weird flavor in the sour cream.  Can't put my finger on what it was (rotten chives?  sick onions?), but I nearly didn't finish it because of it, and if I go back, I'll ask for no sour cream.  2.5 stars for the burrito.

One bonus for Chavez -- they do have a wide assortment of fresh-squeezed fruit juice (pineapple, apple, celery, carrot, etc), which bumps them up to 3 stars.  I'm also tempted by their ceviche tostada.  So, sour cream nonwithstanding, there's still some hope.

I am a sucker for a good burrito.  And Chavez is nearly the best I have found on the peninsula.  The meats are delicious--the carnitas are my favorite, but I can definitely endorse the chile verde and barbacoa.  They make a mean breakfast burrito too, scrambling the eggs and chorrizo together when you order.

The only reason they don't get five stars is that the line, which can be quite long, moves very slowly.  The cash registers are especially bad, as the women working there tend to be very disorganized.  All and all though, I minor complaint.  I am a regular here.

recently i cut out red meat out of my diet, therefore i assumed  i was on the first train to a lame burrito bc i loved my carne asada but chavez came throuh with the best dang pollo burrito ive ever had. meat wasnt dry like i expected and its pretty cheap ($7 for a super burrito).
i sure am gonna miss you when i leave redwood city, but i wont forget!

Orela Ese, this is some good ass Mexican food. They have a mini market combined with a taquria. I'm so in love with their food, bomb!  I had a super veggie burrito, ate the whole thing and my tummy made it look like I was pregnant.  My boyfriend had a carne asade quesadilla, said it was the best meat he's had in a while. Oh and their horchata ($2.49), another over the top drink.  I'm super picky about my horchata but this place passed my test. Not too milky nor too sweet.

I want to try their pan dulce. So far I've purchased dry beans, fresh jalapenos and tomatoes in the market section. Please trust me this place is super good.

I write this as I just finished the most delicious dinner.  Do this:  buy their pre-marinated carne asada, their fresh mini white corn tortillas, fresh cilantro, cabbage, and a white onion.  Make sure you have Tapatio on hand.  Grill up that steak and make the most delicious tacos ever.   It seriously is one of my most favorite meals ever.  Oh, I walked out of there with almost two lbs of meat and the rest of the items for $11.  For two people, you can't beat it!

On another note, their taqueria  is awesome.  I love their burritos with everything, their al pastor (bbq pork), when during the middle of the day,  is really, really good.  By the end of the day, it dries a bit, so its not as tasty.  I do love their carne asada and their chili verde isn't bad either.  They also make some tasty tacos......deeeeeeeelicous!

Delicious. Was introduced for the first time last week, went for the next three consecutive days getting a different meat each time. Can only speak to the burrito's but the pastor (favorite), chile verde (tad spicy), asado, and barria are all superb. Come hungry to leave happy as the burrito's are big. Wish this place were in the East Bay.

This is the best burrito I have had in the bay area....and I have tried dozens of places (including the Mission's finest)

The main reason this place is so incredible is the MEAT!  I usually get the carne asada super burrito.  They literally pull an entire fresh steak off the grill and chop it right in front of you to order, for each burrito.  SO AMAZING.  The al pastor and carnitas are also delicious here.

Chavez is the probably the best taqueria on the peninsula.  The super taco and super quesadilla are my favorites.  Lots of meat and the stuff is fresh and tasty.  Great prices, food, and service.  Even the security guard is nice (I think he's there because they do check cashing).  Classy no, tasty, absolutely!

I heard they have the best carne asada in Redwood City. That made my decision about where to eat lunch pretty damn easy. I went for the carne asada Super Burrito ($7.50) and I was not disappointed. The ingredients were all fresh and of good quality, coming together to produce one of the most authentic and delicious burritos I've had in a while. They also have a great selection of drinks (1.5L Jarritos for only $1.50).

In addition to a great lunch place, Chavez has a great selection of Mexican groceries. The meat section is great, with all kinds of fresh meat and seafood being cut up by a live butcher. There also is a fresh produce section, in addition to a nice selection of obscure Mexican vegetables and spices. On top of all that, they were giving out free samples of their fresh-baked chips and house-made shrimp salsa; seriously, some of the best salsa I've ever tasted. This place is awesome.

Super Carne Asada Burrito!  Lots of meat.  Excellent flavor.  A little small for the price.  But, I think it has the best flavor of any Mexican Burrito on the Peninsula.  The burritos used to be bigger.  That is my only complaint.  This is not the super big grocery store.  There is another Chavez in RWC that has everything you would ever want and an even bigger hot food menu.  But, if you are just looking for a solid burrito, this is the place.

I've been reading yelp reviews about this place and salivating about having burritos and other Mexican goodies. I finally made it there for lunch with the BF. He already had the pantry for breakfast so he wasn't too hungry. I ordered a grilled steak burrito--regular. The counterguy grabbed two huge pieces of steak and began chopping them into manageable pieces. I got just the right amount of rice and beans. After that, he put the steak. Then for the fixin's: unluckily for me I got a huge scoop of sour cream.
I let out a low moan...it wasn't of ecstasy but of mournfulness. I hate sour cream. I managed a "nooooo", not rude or anything--more to myself than anyone else. Counterguy responded by stopping his sour cream assault on my burrito. What he did next blew my mind. He chucked this burrito into the trash. Counterguy was non-plussed, but a true professional. There was no hesitation or anger. Just gone. All that food.
What did he do next?
Rinse and repeat. Re-did everything. New tortilla. New chopped steak. Even MORE steak this time. Rice. Beans. No sour cream. Just lots of salsa.
BF got a banana licuado. I saw it had milk, freshly cut banana and some ice. It was blended right then and there. On top was a healthy sprinkling of cinnamon. I did not try it because I don't like bananas or milk. He said it was quite delicious and raved about it for hours.
So how about that burrito? It was amazing. I loved the steak. It was tender and flavorful. I did not get any tough parts or fat. The ratio of meat to carbs was just right. It didn't drip. The salsa was great. I will definitely come here again and pick up more grub. :)

I love Chavez yes I do,
I love Chavez you should too.

If I had things go my way,
I would eat here everyday.

The burritos here are amazing.  They are my favorite burritos.  I don't have to be hungry or hung over to enjoy them.  Initially they are seemingly expensive, until you try to eat the whole thing.  Then you realize that $7 burrito was an /investment/.

I would call this place the subway of burritos.  The salsas and food here is very fresh, made to order in front of you.  Chavez has much higher quality meat.  (I would also recommend going just to buy their meat).  Oh, Subway is probably healthier, hence the reason Chavez is much much tastier.  The guys at this particular establishment has turned burrito making into an art form.

I know burritos aren't actually Mexican, but did you know burrito means little burro, or little donkey?  I call my friends jackasses all the time, but they know I love them.  Maybe I should start calling them burritos and burritas as a term of endearment instead.

Thanks for reading!

This is one of my favorite places to grab a burrito on my lunch break. They're cheap, fast, fresh, HUGE and tasty. I always get the super burrito (with pollo asado or carne asada, both are really good). I love that they use pinto beans and don't overload it with veggies like some places. It's just pure goodness. I can also vouch for the tortas, nachos and pretty much everything else on the menu. I've never been here with anyone who didn't thoroughly enjoy their meal. Also, the market itself has a good share of yummy hispanic treats (I'm especially partial to the rice pudding).

Minus one star for the limited parking (there are maybe 5 spots for the market; otherwise you'll be parking somewhere on Arguello and walking), the popularity of the place (it's alwaaays busy) and the lack of ambiance (hey, it's a market - so yes, you are going either eat in the middle of it or order to go).

OK so now you know the burritos are fantabulous......

its a market too......I have gotten the carne asada and the pollo asada and its freaking great.

I love this place. I've eaten at several of the stores and it doesn't really matter which store you go to. They all make consistanly great food. The burritos are fantastic and i never get the fatty chunks of crap or huge pockets of rice you get at alot of other places. The meat is great quality since they're also a market where you can buy the meat they use. It is best to go earlier in the day when everything is fresh and hot but they can get very busy at lunchtime. I've never had a bad meal here and no, i've never worked for them, i just love this place that much!

After Ranchito's closure, we wandered from Mexican restaurant to Mexican restaurant in downtown RWC, looking for a suitable replacement.  We've finally found it: Taqueria Chavez.  TC is located inside Chavez Market which is a carniceria (meat market, usually a sign that the meat's going to be GOOD) but they also make their own corn tortillas and pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread).

They know their meat.  Try the carne asada which is cooked on a spit - yum.  The chicken in the chicken (pollo asado, $6.49) burrito is chopped into small, flavorful bits.  Seasoned perfectly.  It comes with rice, pinto beans, salsa fresca, sour cream and some other sauce that they throw on.  Their salsas are very good too. They don't have a salsa bar (oh well), but they have squeeze bottles of salsa at the counter.

The guys who make the burritos are the fastest burrito makers I've seen.  They seem to be engaged in contest of who can make the most burritos in one hour.  Everyone hustles and keeps the line moving.  They have a wide variety of meat choices, including goat but no brains, seafood dishes, tamales, tacos, tortas, soups, enchiladas, nachos, and more.  Many people seem to order and enjoy the meat combination plate that comes with rice, beans and a 1/2 dozen fresh corn tortillas ($8.99).  I love how they chop up your meat after you order it.

I've also tried the spicy shrimp platter (camarones a la diabla, $9.99) and the sauce was quite spicy (but rather oily).  The shrimp had been cooked too long but they were a good size and the dish came with rice, beans topped with grated cheese, lettuce, avocado slices and 6 or 7 fresh corn tortillas.  In other words, it was enough for two people.

You can fill up for under $5 here if you get a regular quesadilla.

Seating is plentiful and you can also grab a beverage and/or dessert before you get in the taqueria line.  The pan dulce is very good, slightly sweet, tastes fresh and at 40 cents each, a steal.  They also have flan and rice pudding.  The market section has imported goods including Peruvian salsa.  They also carry fresh produce.

UPDATE (10/25):  I was surprised by the cold torta.  The bottom half of the bun/bread was completely soggy.  The carne asada was very good but cold.  It was hard to eat because it just fell apart in my hands.  Comes with lots of lettuce, tomato and lovely ripe avocado slices.  And cheese.  I prefer the tortas at Mi Casita Chilanga.

UPDATE (11/30):  I have gone through the entire menu, just about.  My top picks are (1) burritos and (2) tacos.  Pass on the enchiladas and soggy tortas.  Don't get a burrito unless you're starving.  Tacos are good when you aren't that hungry.

Okay, the burritos are pretty great, but ever since I discovered their torta there is no going back! A torta is a Mexican sandwich -- I like pollo asado -- with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and a little bit of cheese. The bread is to die for -- toasted to perfection, with a slight crunch and a hint of sweetness. I can't stop thinking about it and think I will need a fix real soon. Add some pan dulce for an after dinner treat, and you have a carb overload of goodness.

There's also a freezer full of fruit popsicles right by the entrance, and I will be there during the hot summers fo sho! Reminds me of the ice cream found in the freezer carts with the vendors in LA -- creamy strawberry fruit bar with chunks of real fruit!

Other samplings include nachos, which are consistently good. They are piled high with plenty o'meat, and the portions are huge.

I wish I could give this place no stars. I really hate to say it. I had heard great things about the taqueria here. Alas, when I walked in, the whole supermarket had an odd odor (like something was spoiled or sour). I got a burrito. The guacamole was just green slop. The veggies were not fresh. The rice was gummy, almost glue-like. This was the worst burrito I have ever had. EVER. It may have been one of the worst things I've ever eaten.

There are lots of decent places to get a burrito on the peninsula (although I'm still searching for a truly great, crave-worthy place). This is not one of them.

This place is awesome - they make my burrito in 43 seconds (I swear, I timed it), and that includes chopping up chunks of fresh steak or pork of wonderfulness.  I'm very picky about meat, but this place, which looks like it still has the cows hanging by the hooks in the back room, I completely trust.

To top that, it's very inexpensive.  It's my favorite Mexican place on the peninsula.

This is my favorite place for burritos.  The only thing that is not perfect about their burritos is the tortilla, which is good but not great.  The tortilla is plain and steamed.  It would be cool if they could make it with that roasted effect--a little crunchy on the outside and not so chewy.

But other than that every thing else is just perfect.  I always get the super carne asada burrito.  The meat has very little fat and gristle that some places have.  The flavor is exactly what my mouth is craving...I don't know what magic they are putting in there.  The price is about $6.50 I think...very reasonable at least.  It includes the meat (of which there are many choices), the beans (no black beans though), rice, sour cream, dynamite guacamole, flavorful hot red salsa, pico de gallo, and lots o love!  And these burritos are HUGE!

I want to go buy one right now...My mouth is watering...

I couldn't even finish a third of the Taqueria's chicken burrito without feeling sick from the grease/cheese/salt overload, and I didn't feel hungry again for over twelve hours - not because I felt properly sated, but because the idea of eating anything else before I got this thing out of my system made me feel sick.

Don't get me wrong, it's fairly tasty going down, but this is a burrito you need to eat as three separate meals, and even then you'll feel like going into a coma.

Nothing wrong with a 6,000-calorie burrito if you spend eight hours a day hauling fifty-pound bags of anthracite out of the mines for a living.  I, however, am merely a student who hits the gym regularly, and I distrust burritos that put my body and digestion in a state of shock.   (Yes, I could have thrown it out after eating the first third, but I don't waste food ever, even if it's something I don't care for.)

Two stars instead of one, because while I wasn't a fan, I know that this kind of over-the-top burrito overflowing with cheesy goo/salt/fat is popular with many.

I personally liked my burrito I got here. Veggie goodness that had a lot of flavor. I also liked the place - people of many shades coming to get their burrito fix. Bummer there's no drinking of alcohol allowed, though!

One of my favorite ethnic foods if by far Mexican food!  I have 2 favorite Mexican restaurants and one is Chavez Market.  They make your food right in front of you which is nice so you know what you're getting yourself into and they have my favorite tortilla.  My coworker and I find our love in Mexican food different but this is the one Mexican restaurant we can agree on.  There's not much parking and that's the only bad statement I can think of.

It is ok. The food is decent, but severly over priced.

I've tried the nachos and burritos here and they are both great.  The are well stuffed/topped with meat and other goodies that you'd expect.  The burritos are nice and juicy and  very filling.  The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because they are a little more expensive then your typical taqueria.  Expect to pay about $7 for a burrito....but it'll be one of the best you've ever had.
