Chavella's is great! It's a teeny place, but full of charm and the guys who work there are so nice. I haven't eaten there yet, but I got take out the other day and it was a little strange, but delicious! My boy and I split the 2 tortas, one egg and chorizo and the other chorizo and potato.

"Potato sandwich... How strange", you say?  yes, it was strange and I felt guilty about eating carbs sandwiched in more carbs, but not guilty enough to stop eating it.

I will be back to try everything else!

Chavella's should not be overlooked if you're in the area.  I've had brunch, lunch, dinner, and take out from here and have always been satisfied.  The prices are reasonable and the food is good.  The pan-Mexican menu has some great options and they serve enough beers, wine, and sangria to keep me happy.

Recommendations:
Torta Mananera (eggs, chorizo, black bean spread, and queso on a traditional Mexican Bread) and a white sangria for Brunch.

Trios of Salsa(salsa verde, chipotle salsa, and pico de gallo) and a modelo especial for lunch

Aurelia's Mole Chicken with Black beans and glass of Emir Torrontes Clasico 2005 for dinner.

The restaurant seats about 20 people so expect a wait if you bring more than 4 people.  It's cash only but there is a ATM next door.

My friend brought me to this adorable lil' place, saying that a former Californian like me would appreciate Chavella's food & ambiance.  We sat outside and as others have noted, the street is surprisingly quiet.

We started with the trio of salsas which includes a really fantastic pico de gallo.  Fresh, fresh, fresh!  For our meals, my friend got a huge veggie plato (served in pretty blue dish that holds several other tiny dishes so as not to mix the different foods, for those of you who are anti-food integration) and shared some guac, black beans, grilled lemon/pepper seasoned corn, & soft taco shells.  I got the salad w/ grilled shrimp (yes, I shared, too!).  All of the food was delicious!!!

Chavella's does indeed serve my favorite kind of veggie-heavy California-style Mexican food and the prices are decent.  Highly approve!

Now if only I could find this in Chicago...hello Chi?  can you at least get some black beans? thanks.

I mean, I moved to the neighborhood recently but I already have the feeling that this place will be in my top 5. It's tiny but the waitstaff is so friendly and the food is so fresh. I constantly recommend it to people who are visiting the area. The first time I went we stumbled upon it randomly and so we were a little hesitant but the first bite was fantastic and I cleaned my plate - no problem!

Sorry New York, but your mexican food sucks. As a Californian I am disappointed time after time trying a new place. One collective star lost because the concept of chips and salsa is totally lost here. Chips and salsa are the bread and butter of mexican food (or at least mexican food in white person world, and lets be honest who is your target audience here?....) Minus another star because my water was warm, I know it is Mexican food but lets not make the WHOLE experience too authentic shall we. The last Negative star because I got no lime with my tacos.... Even the mexicans are crying this time guys. Tacos are just carnival food without a slice of lime. Seriously you can give me the worst shit service ever and fart in my face, just get the damn food right. I'm dying here without my mexican food.
Don't worry I will give you guys another shot.

"What do you think?" asked my friend as I took my first few bites of taco goodness at Chavella's.

The pork taco was pretty damn tasty, I replied, but the steak taco was awesome, the best I've had in awhile. Normally I take my time when I eat, but these little puppies were gone in a segundo.

My friend seemed perfectly pleased. She had been telling me about her favorite Mexican restaurant in Prospect Heights for a few weeks, and now I was trying Chavella's for myself.

We arrived on the most humid, disgusting night of the year. The atmosphere inside was cozy but it was just too damn hot (no AC), so we opted for a table outside.

Chavella's is actually a great place to dine al fresco as there's not much else going on the street, so it's pretty quiet and chill. And the service could not be friendlier.

Started the meal with a trio of salsas, served with homemade round tortilla chips. Mmmmmmmm. For dinner, we each had dos tacos and a michelada -- modelo especial served with spicy sangrita. Fresh and authentic, todos.

As I sipped my drink, I pondered the possibility of moving to this n'hood. Having a restaurant like Chavella's nearby makes Prospect Heights muy bueno in my book.

"The first time I came here five years ago, it was like I stumbled on a secret," said my amiga. "Now it's definitely become more popular, but it's still my favorite place in the hood."

After my first experience at this authentic little Brooklyn gem, I am not surprised my friend loves it so. Looking forward to my next meal here.

"Its not authentic Mexican food, its TexMex" the friendly waiter explained to the order of a burrito, but they do have authentic Mexican food like cactus salad, trust me there is a reason why cactus looks the way they do.

"what happened?" I run out and ask the lucky outside seated folks, "why is everybody on their feet?"
"the guy just past by the second time, picked up her iphone off the table and ran off"
well, it might be located in Prospect Heights, Crown Heights or Fort Greene, whatever you feel like, but it's BedStuy to me and for all who worked this area for 2 years.

Tasty food, cozy dining room, nice outdoor seating and a bathroom sink filled with pebble stones.

All you people from "California" or "Texas" or "Arizona" who unanimously agree that this is "most authentic Mexican food I've experienced since living an hour from the Mexican border in Tucson, AZ" have let me down. I am very disappointed in you because I've come to trust my fellow Southwestern Yelpers to directed me to decent Mexican food in NY; but for all your primping and prancing if the word "authentic" the food here is simply NOT GOOD! And before you say it must have been what I ordered (because I'm the lame ass vegetarian), are at lease 4 people on here that state they have "tried almost everything on the menu" and have never been disappointed or let down. How can this be when these two terms personify my meal here.

My sangria left me smacking my lips seeking any semblance of sweetness (or alcohol) but all I could taste was watered down wine and lemon rind. The taquitos were just ok, but begged for a splash of lime... or some salt perhaps... http://www.yelp.com/bi... The Aguacate con Queso tacos were lightly dabbed with bland black beans and the queso fresco was barely detectable dust, they were like joke tacos http://www.yelp.com/bi...

But the worst was the quesadillas, we order the Huitlacoche (mexican corn truffle) and the Flor De Calabaza (blossom squash, oaxaca cheese, and epazote) both of which were as appetizing as paper pulp; and the little side of sleepy mole was no help at all.

Look, the fish tacos and other supposable fabulous meat dishes here are probably goodish; but for a Mexican restaurant that is really pushing the vegetarian/vegan-friendly agenda hard, Chavella's sent me running home yapping "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" (or Pequena)

Really good food, good prices, sizable portions.

I sat inside and the interior was a little cozy.  The people behind me kept bumping me with their baby stroller.  Service was average, it took a little while to get our food, though we came at an off time so maybe they didn't have as much staff.

I had enchiladas with mole sauce.  It was very good.  The mole sauce was delicious, but I'm not a superspicy food eater, so towards the end I was scraping it off because it was too strong.

That said, I still plan on visiting fairly often.

Good food with unpretentious service.

If you didn't know about Chavella's and you were in the neighborhood, I doubt you would stop by. It is across from a rehabilitation center on a rather lonely block, in a not-so-nice area of town.

Great spicy cactus salad. I also loved the three salsas that came with the tortilla chips. They range in spicyness (pico de gallo being the spiciest and my favorite.)

I am not sure about it being "the best Mexican I ever had" (It's not. That honor goes to Tacubayo in Berkeley, CA), but it is not bad. Sangria was unimpressive. Next time I am getting a cerveza and the cactus taco for sure.

Oh, and BTW, expect to be creepily stared at by the deliverymen during dinner if you are a female sitting outside. No me gusta.

This is one of my favorite restaurants...in the WORLD.

Seriously, Chavella's (and I don't even really know how to properly pronounce it) touches my heart. I am a tough critic on Mexican food because I'm that rare Texan-Californian hybrid who somehow found herself in Brooklyn. Chavella's is neither tex-mex or fresh-mex. It's just good quality, authentic Mexican food served in a lovely, homey setting. I want to move in and be the head chef's big spoon.

I love that a lot of their dishes are kind of a-la-carte style and really affordable. So, it's really easy to order a big spectrum of your favorites. My favorites include their spicy corn (YUM), fish tacos (I HAVE to get at least one EVERY time I go), and their cactus tacos. Their mole sauce is pretty rockin' too. Oh and the Mexican corn truffle in the quesadilla section was very original. Gosh, now I want it bad. I could eat it here twice a day, every day.

major kisses to Chavella's.

I don't really get the hype about this place.  Got delivery once, and it was decent, but not that crazy.  Went for the brunch once too, and got the chilaquiles.  Maybe I got the wrong thing, but it would have been worth the walk/bike ride to Castro's for a larger portion of better food for about half the price.

I am going to be living around the corner from these guys soon, and I'll be sure to give them another shot.

Cash Only. Does delivery.

Cozy, affordable, small neighborhood place with outdoor seating.

I've been here several times and the food and service has been consistently good. I love their grilled corn and their fish tacos. Do try their guac and seafood ceviche, too. Their ceviche has pineapple in it so it's sweeter than your typical ceviche.

It gets really hot and noisy inside, so I recommend sitting outside if possible.

Admittedly I'm not a huge Mexican food fan but I suspect this is just because I haven't had the good fortune to visit Mexico yet. Mexican food in the North East tends to be greasy, heavy and always covered in cheap melted cheese guaranteed to bring on a food coma if not worse. This is not true for Chavella's... I shared a tasty Cactus salad, fresh guac (served with soft tacos), quickly followed by queso fresco (Mexican Cheese?) stuffed jalapeno peppers in a fresh tomato sauce and some light but filling tacos (mushroom, fish, and chorizo+potatoe) the best of which was the mushroom.

I still can't say I'm blown away with Mexican food but Chavella's has done it's bit to convert me with it's fresh, light but filling dishes. No grease, and no horrible cheese!

What happens when the b/f & I are chillin' on the couch on a lazy Saturday, watching a "Man vs. Food" marathon?

We decide to create our own " M vs. F" challenges...in comes Mexican joints in BK.

Our 1st stop was Chavella's.

Good service, nice people.

Other peoples orders look really fuckin' good & well served.
We ordered the fish tacos, bistec taco, carne enchilada taco & an order of guacamole.

Unfortunately, the aguas frescas weren't available because they were using the machine for sangria instead...I can't hate on wanting to offer the enjoyment of spirits.

The habanero salsa was on point with the spiciness. So on point, that, not taking under consideration the skin irritation it might cause, I would have slathered it all over my body...ooor maybe not...nonetheless, it was guuuud!
The bistec meat had a great taste to it.
The carne enchilada sauce was hearty & complimented the meat.
The chipotle sauce served in all the tacos gave it that tasty kick that probably is Chavella's signature.
Definitely well served tacos.

The tortas I saw being served looked on point & they were using the correct type of bread, 'telera', it's the little details like that that totally count.

I thought the prices were pretty decent for NY standards.

Hell ya, I'm going back.

This place is adorable and the service was awesome. Four of my friends and I came here for brunch on saturday while we were in town visiting. We didn't have to wait more than ten minutes for seating which was great because we'd heard sometimes there's a bit of a wait. And we were seated outside where we could watch all the goings on.  It was warm but our friendly waiter kept the water coming.

When we were ordering my friend asked about vegan options and suddenly the chef popped up and explained to that he could make just about anything vegan. I told him I'm very sensitive to spicy stuff and wasn't sure I'd like the pico de gallo and asked if I could have it on the side. He said "For you? Of course." The waiter was also super friendly and attentive. While we were waiting for our food the chef sent out a plate of nachos and pico de gallo so I could try it out. Thoughtful, huh? Yea, I'm sold. Friendly people are always a selling point for me.

The food was awesome too. I had an omelette that was perfectly cooked. Not runny but not even a little browned, the way I like it. The little tiny tortillas that come with the guac were cute and soft and a perfect thickness. The guac needed a lil salt but they were quick to provide us with a lil dish of it. All in all, a successful saturday morning brunch. I definitely recommend it.

so a friend recommended the place for brunch and we all hit it up today.  it was blistering and we asked for a table indoors, however some group jumped in front of us and claim the last table inside.  BASTARDS!

we were starving so we braved the heat, which ended up being okay after some grey cloud covered the blazing sun.  anyhoot, we were already a little miffed about the seating situation and after we ordered coffee they brought us no sugar and water on this hot day was not replenished.

the guac we ordered came out fairly quickly, however our entrees took over 30 minutes.  people who were seated at the same time received their food 15 minutes before.  i was famished.  i got the chavella's omelet.  i did like the chorizo hash, however the omelet for me was sub par.  i was expecting an influx of mexi flavors and it fell short for me.  my fellow dining companions were happy with their eats.

my roommate ordered a chicken tamale and was told no cheese, but they brought her the entirely wrong tamale.  they didn't charge for that and brought her the right one.  the brunch end up being close to a 2 hour ordeal.  the mexican sweet bread were nice in the end though.  i might be back to try their other eats but maybe do take out to avoid the spotty service.

Bueno!!!

Brunch here today was great.  The place is tiny., but has seating both inside and out.  Has the feel of a real family owned establishment.

I had some sort of Mexican spin on Eggs Benedict, which was delicious.  Girl had something involving cactus, and was quite happy as well.  I warned her that her food would have prickers, but she seemed unharmed.

Plus there is weird flavored gum on the table.

I have no idea what this place is like for lunch or dinner, but for brunch it's definitely a nice change from the usual options.

The fact that Chavella's is at my corner leads to the fact that I hardly ever want to eat anywhere else. The first time I ate here it was one of those culinary experiences where I felt the need to sneak into the kitchen and check if they were sprinkling crack on my food. The food is fresh and amazing. You immediately get the sense that this is what Mexican food is supposed to taste like and your head's been buried in the sand all these years. The black bean soup with queso fresco, the roasted corn with chipotle mayo, cheese enchiladas with mole sauce, tilapia with black beans, the whole damn menu! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Take me to Chavella's now.

A wise man once said, "we must have hope or starve to death". When it comes to Mexican food in the vicinity of NYC there is no hope and I would rather starve.

Until now.

1. Tacos, all kinds, tender meat, fresh ingredients, fluffy corn tortillas, exploding with flavor. They even double up on the tortillas, so if all the juices destroy the first layer you got extra padding. No me he divertido tanto desde los anos setenta!!

2. Flautas, beef, chicken, potato. These are made to order and some of the freshest flautas I have ever had. Eres la chica ma bonita en este bar aunque eres travesti!!

3. Black Beans & Rice. Anywhere else I usually don't touch the stuff due to lack of flavor, but the beans were nice and seasoned the rice moist and flavorful and neither full of grease and unwanted frozen peas and carrots. Para todo mal, mezcal, para toda bien, tambien!!

4. Torta. What I like to call the "Supreme Burrito on a baguette", slathered in black beans, with avocado, queso oaxaco to grilled veggies or meat. This is huge and fresh, good to share! Estaba esperando que tú recordaras como conseguí este tatuaje!!

5. Taco Pu-Pu Platter (Plato Don). I think this is pretty self explanatory. JESUS CRISTO!

6. Chavella's is COZY i.e. tiny, so get there early, if you have to wait a little they will gladly serve you cervezas and you can sit out in the front. !!!

Realmente no puedo hablar espanol; solo aprendi unas frases de una pagina web!!

Finally! My long search for palatable NYC Mexican is over.
After my first visit I was so impressed I went back the next day, accompanied by three other fellow ex-Texans. They were all as dazzled as I was (though that may have had something to do with the pitchers of Sangria consumed.. hmm).

Small place, cash only. There is half-hearted attempt at a patio, but I prefer the coziness of the interior. The service is extremely friendly and the food is incredible. Their menu yields spot-on renditions of classics such as chiles rellenos, taquitos, quesadillas and flautas. Their tacos and salsas are a delicious gift from the heavens. Don't forget the queso fundido (and the Sangria)!

Combine dinner at Chavella's with a trip to the nearby Brooklyn Museum, and you have yourself a hot date.

Chavella's is a cute little place (a little too little, actually--more on that later).  The food is very reasonably priced, fresh, and tasty.  I  tried three varieties of authentic, soft-shelled corn tortilla-wrapped tacos, the best of which was the carne enchilada teeming with cilantro and shredded pork marinated in pineapple and habanero salsa.  The avocado taco with queso fresco, black beans, pico de gallo, and salsa verde was also a good choice.  The one I wasn't so crazy about was the chipotle chicken, which consisted of big chunks of chicken smothered in chioptle and not balanced out by the miniscule strips of lettuce and slices of onions, such that it was overkill.  At  double the price of an amazing Sunset Park taco, Chavella's chicken taco was a letdown. I accompanied my taco trio with an uninspiring but cheap glass of sangria.  Since Chavella's does have a liquor license, it really needs to jazz up its minimal drink menu and move beyond the banal beer and wine offerings to embrace the margarita, which is in my mind the best complement to Mexican food.  Also, the cramped seating really detracted from my experience here.  The tables are so close together here that if you back up a chair by a millimeter, you will bump into chairs perpendicular to you and behind you.  The waiters practically have to sit on neighboring tables to get in to take other tables' orders and deliver food.  The outside seating looked slightly better, but there wasn't much of it.  Chavella's should consider expanding in any  direction possible or renaming itself "Chavellitas."

Awesome, another delivery restaurant to add to the roster! I was craving a later evening nosh, and although Castro's was a possibility, I wanted to try something new. Luckily, Yelp to the rescue!

I got the taquitos (FIVE yummy little taquitos for $4), a chicken mole tamale ($3), elotes callerejos - corn on the cob ($2.50) and a carne enchilada taco. The taquitos were delicious, still crispy (delivery so fast they didn't have time to steam!), smoky flavors with the cheesy interiors. The tamale had a sweetness in the fresh corn, and the mole also had a smoky sweetness to it. The elotes callerejos was covered in cojita cheese and spicy chipotle mayo. The corn itself was nicely roasted and I'm a HUGE fan of this. The taco - pork with pineapple, cilantro, a salsa I think? was yummy,

Fairly fast delivery - 30-35 minutes?, pretty good prices, I'm a fan!

Scanned a few of the most recent reviews. Most of the points have been covered, it seems. My input here isn't really necessary, but as this is my first Yelp review, I figured that I would start with my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn.

Yes, it's great Mexican in NYC. Yes, it's cheap. Yes, They have Negro Modelos, Pacificos and will make you a Michelada.

Every single one of the tacos is amazing. I am particularly fond, however, of the spicy pork & pineapple. Four will put a hungry human to sleep, which is how I like to end my meals.

If you are feeling broke, split the Plato Don with a friend or lover.  It will feed two handily (provided you are not completely ravenous) for the negligible price of $13. Wow.

Great for a date (Park/Library/Museum are all close by) or impressing Californians.

You seriously can't make a bad choice here. If only they delivered North of Atlantic (just a few blocks...), I would probably never leave my apartment.

Super small, super cute, super good!

All the dishes are really good and filling here and they have an exceptional brunch selection.  I don't really know how "authentic" it is since I've never been to Mexico, but everything is so fresh AND they serve cactus!  They also have a good selection of Mexican beers (besides Corona!) and sangria.

Pros: Authentic, Fresh, Natural ingredients. Not just typical mexican, they even have nopales! And, they deliver to my area of brooklyn which only has ONE or TWO other delivery options.

Cons: Chavella's could benefit from more flavorful ingredients in some of their dishes, like the quesadilla or taquitos. I am a vegetarian so I just get cheese, but as of now Chavella's just gives you the small sides of mole, pico de gallo, or salsa to add flavor to your food.

Tamales are excellent. The people are awesome. Please go here so that they stay in business and I can eat those delicious tamales. They don't have the simple tacos at the taquerias in Sunset Park, but our tasty in their own right.

Pros: tamales, the owners and waitresses, Tacos Hongos, cold beers

Cons: Nothing really. Maybe they could move closer to my apt.

Hands down the best Mexican food I've ever had in New York City. A close second is the vendors at the Brooklyn Flea Market hosted by Brownstoner, but as far as Mexican restaurants go, this place is top notch.

We started off with the trio of salsas which were superb. For my meal I had Chiles Rellenos, a chicken tomale and corn chased with a Pacifico. I couldn't have been happier.

The only downside to Chavellas is that its a very small restaurant. However, we went there at 7pm on Saturday night and only had to wait about 15 minutes for a seat. The service was absolutely perfect once seated and the waitress was very nice, and cute.

Love love LOVE this place.  It makes me so happy that I live right around the corner.  It's DELICIOUS, friendly, healthy, and affordable... I think I will be coming here a lot.  It's cash only, but it's family owned and cheap, so that's totally fine.  The decor is adorable - bright red walls, cool glass lamps, scarves covering the windows, cute little water bottles on the table.  The people are always cool, so you don't mind being right up against each other for your meal, and the servers are FANTASTIC.

I've been three times so far.  The last time I went, we got the taquitos with mole sauce (which I'm quickly becoming obsessed with), the corn with cheese and chipotle mayo, and the torta (sandwich) with chorizo and scrambled eggs.  All was amazing, but the corn, especially, was out of this world - in my boyfriend's words, I looked like a pretty version of Gollum huddled over my precious after I took my first bite - it was THAT good.  We also got three micheladas between us - light beer mixed with hot sauce (they use Valentina, Tabasco, and Worcestershire), lime, and a coating of red chili pepper, tamarind candy, and salt on the edge of the glass.  AMAZING.  The entire meal came out to $30 plus tip - you can't beat that!  We've also had the quesadilla with caramelized onions and a few of the tacos... all were fantastic.

I want to go everyday until I've eaten everything on their menu.  All you Manhattan-dwellers, this is a reason to come out to Brooklyn, seriously... GO!

I think that I should learn to make Mole. However, until I master the complex flavors and subtleties that go into this sauce, I think I'll be fine having the Chicken Mole here. And the Chicken Tamale with Tomatillo sauce. And the tostadas with chicken and cheese. And picking off from the Plato Don.

The space is cramped, but we didn't wait more than 10 minutes for a table and once seated, all you think about is when you're getting your food. You don't think for too long because the service is prompt, they are attentive without being in your face, and they smile. Something that I like when I go out to a place. I forgive much when there is a smile involved. Not that I had to forgive anything here.

The DP and I inhaled our food and if we could have licked our plates clean, we would have.

Great, affordable, TASTY - what else could you want in a dining experience?

Also, the bathroom is surprisingly spacious and clean. Surprising because of the size of the place - I think whoever thought of the layout of this restaurant was one smart cookie!

I'm a fan!

only $13 for taquitos, chicken and cheese tamales as well as elotes callerejos (cheesy corn on the cob). sounds like a great recession-friendly deal, huh? however, you totally get what you pay for...

tamales and taquitos were overcooked and stale ... as in dark brown at the edges - a tell-tale sign they were burnt. the corn had potential because the sauce was tasty, but too bad half of it came off by the time it made it over to my apartment.

i was so saving the perfect time to order from this place since everyone had hyped it up so much. man, contrary to all those reviews, this place ... just ain't all that. ahhh, sucha letdown. maybe it's because i didn't drink the booze...

i'm hoping my experience was just a one-off, but i won't be spending anymore money (or calories) to find out.

We trekked down from Bushwick by us to get here for Brunch--ever is search of the perfect Mexican food and the best deal.

While we waited the waiter brought us two sweet breads--both were fantastic and moist and we quickly devoured them.

My boyfriend was feeling very gringo this afternoon, and decided to order the banana chocolate chip pancakes. ...Some of the best pancakes we've had in the city--at a Mexican restaurant! I had the Huevos Ahogados, a riff on Eggs Benedict with a Mexican bolio bread smothered in guacamole, topped with chorizo and a poached egg and drenched in jalapeño hollandaise. I thought it was going to be too spicy, but it was amazingly mild, really rich and so filling.

We're sad we discovered this place so late. We will be back soon! I can't wait to try the other dishes at lunch and dinner.

To my dear boyfriend:

I am writing to apologize for my behavior the other day at Chavella's in Brooklyn.  I was so hungry and excited to try what I heard was some of the best Mexican food in the city, that I completely lost control of myself.  You see, I've never had good mole sauce.  Anywhere that I've ever tasted it, it was bitter and bland.  So I of course got my chilaquiles with the green tomatillo sauce, thinking the mole would just reinforce past experiences.

I was excited that you decided on mole for your enchiladas, because, as you know, I like to try everything.  I just didn't realize that once I tried that first bite of mole, I wouldn't be able to stop.  I regret trying to trick you into looking out the window at the blustery snow so I could shovel even more mole in my mouth.  You see, Chavella's has shown me that mole can be so amazing that it is compared to the nectar of the gods.  I live and breath for mole now, and won't step foot in Brooklyn again without a plan to visit Chavella's and satiate this unquenchable thirst.

To make it up to you, next time's on me.

Love,
Heather D.

Chavella's is probably my favorite restaurant in Prospect Heights.  The flavor, texture and overall quantity of food is impeccable.  Whether I dine in, or get takeout, the food is always great.  Hungry and looking for a substantial meal?  Get the Plato Don.  Saturday morning and looking for a brunch that isn't pancakes and sausage?  Try the Huevos Ahogados.  I've tried nearly everything on the menu, and I can honestly say that I have not once been let down.

The only problem I have is that my girlfriend has a very americanized palate, and no taste for authentic cuisine.  I took her here a couple times, and tricked her into eating takeout once; she didn't quite appreciate the food the same way I do.  While we agreed the food was good, she stated that she prefers "Tex-Mex" to "Real Mex."

Particular girlfriend aside, Chavella's is great place to eat at, especially if you want to try authentic mexican food for the first time.

People always tell me that the best Mexican food is in Queens...I live in Queens, and I have to say, the best Mexican food is in a little tiny place in Prospect Heights.

First off, just moving to NYC I wasn't in love with where my boys lived-Prospect Heights-I fell in love with Park Slope and Cobble Hill when i visited a few years back, but I gots to say, having my friends take me around the neighborhood opened my eyes and this place certainly added points.

For starters the ambiance is great, it's small but cozy and clean and feels like I'm in my best friends house and about to have a big feast with the people I love most...and it's cheap-amazing value! Some people might complain, but for me space is never the issue, I'll sit on my best friends lap if the food is good enough, and believe me, I was ready to get on boy's lap just to get some of those grilled corns and chipotle mayo and cotija, one of the best appetizer's I've ever had-Mexican or no Mexican.

It seems that this place hands down is unbelievable so I'll just leave it up to you to find out.

Bottom line: A good judge of a place is if it makes you yearn for it and this place makes you sit on the train for 1 hour and a half from Queens to Brooklyn and it has nothing to do with the cute waitress and horchada.

Damn I wish I lived around the corner.
