This is hands down one of the best places in Boulder to eat. There are probably places in this town that have better food, but the thing that elevates this restaurant to five star status is its location. Chautauqua Dining Hall is located practically next to the trail head for some of the best and most beautiful hiking in all of Boulder, if not the entire state. The food is more than decent, and coupled with the breathtaking views of the Flatirons, it's an experience that cannot be missed. This was an old stand by for me when I was in college and had to take out of town guests somewhere. The menu changes a lot, and I've generally liked everything I've ever ordered from here. I tend to be partial to their breakfasts and brunches, but there's nothing wrong with their other entrees.

The perfect location, quality food...what more could a diner want? Vince D's review describes the scenario well and the menu changes frequently because there is a creative chef in the kitchen!
Service is not always the friendliest here, but this is fairly easy to overlook. Service is usually good and efficient.
The Sunday and holiday brunches are quite nice. Sunday brunch is more affordable than holiday brunch. It is not easy to get a reservation here on holidays, so if you do want to go, make a reservation well in advance.
Meats and fish are cooked properly here, the salads are always good, and the tea and coffee are just right.
I've really only reserved star # 5 because of the sometimes unfriendly service we've received. Everything else is quite excellent here.
It's nice to go for a hike on one of the many adjacent trails after eating, if the weather is right. Trailheads are a simple hop, skip, and jump from the dining hall.

Last time my girlfriend and I had dinner here, we sat on the patio at one of the most beautiful locations on the planet, Chautauqua Park. You've got history. You've got great food. The mountains. And during our meal two deer wandered through the meadow outside the patio, less than 20 feet from our table. What, was this a dream sequence?
No, it was the everyday experience at Chautauqua. They have an impressive selection of healthy, delicious and satisfying salads. They also have a wide variety of entrees, from venison to seafood to lamb. And whatever you order, make sure it comes with the mashers. Best part is you can eat there before or after a hike (the dining room is less than 100 yards from a trailhead), or check out a performance of the Colorado Musical Festival, which takes place in the auditorium across the lawn.
