I haven't tried the coffee here, but I can vouch for their delicious sandwiches!
They recently stopped serving bagels in the afternoon (boo) and added toasted sandwiches to their menu. Sandwiches come in about six different combos, but they're pretty flexible with substitutions/additions.
I personally like to order their veggie sandwich with hummus :D.
What's MOST impressive about this place , though, is their cleanliness and organization! Seriously, they keep the place so tidy, all the ingredients are organized, and they recently replaced some of their equipment. -

The americano is good and hot. They have a few quick food options to go. My complaint is that their coffee lids always let coffee drip down my hand. This doesn't happen with other coffees and since this is a To-Go place, that is a problem and has made me stop using them.

I absolutely HATE cold weather, so I'm dreading winter. But I know I can take comfort here with the M E X I C A N H O T C H O C O L A T E!
I can't vouch for the sandwiches and bagels, but their mocha's are also pretty tasty. Service is okay, but they make up for it with being speedy and efficient! -

I tried this place for the first time today and was disappointed.
Chatz is one of those places where you order a latte and after they put in the espresso, with no regard for proper ratios, they just fill your cup up leaving you with way too much foam and milk.
I honestly expected better because I see people lined up here almost every time I walk by on my way to work. -

If I want to make it into work without punching someone in the mouth for disturbing my 4 hour slow wake-up, then I come here and order a delicious bagel with cream cheese and a cup of coffee.
It's small, fast, efficient, and awesome. I suggest you either lead me in the right direction to Chatz if I walk in without a cup of coffee, or be prepared to stay on your toes all day.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish up this coffee, so you don't have to worry about my killer right hook. -

Oh rats! How I love Chatz. Chatz's bagels have saved my a** on more than a few occasions. Sometimes if I'm trying to be healthy, I opt for an english muffin with cream cheese (they give you a shit ton of it).
The people who work here are nice, fast, and good to their regulars. Come on down to Chatz and start your day off on the right foot. -

Good coffee, better than SB's
Morning pastries, oat cakes, bagels and juices
Perfect afternoon break/caffeine refuel
Open until 5pm, Friendly service, tiny spot, cheap
Sweet and simple, just like Chatz! -

I love this place because it's close to my 12 Folsom stop, the coffee is good, the bagels are fresh and good, and the folks are friendly.
But man, they always seem frazzled or busy or something, and have screwed up my order 3 times. I love you guys, but how did you get 'sprouts and cream cheese' from 'jalapeno spread'? -

Don't be fooled by their size, they manage to offer more than SB and have better coffee and better service.
They don't take debit cards but they offered to let me come back and pay later. That is great service. I only go about once a week and to offer that made me compelled to come and write my first Yelp review.
Their breakfast sandwiches are good and so are their yogurt cups with fresh fruit and granola. Pastries always look fresh as well. -

I needed good coffee and was happy to hear they roast their own. If you're in the area I'd definitely recommend it as a coffee to go.
That is all. And that is all I needed. -

Chatz is a daily stop for me as I make my way up 2nd street on the commute to work. I really can't imagine starting off a work day without a large Foglifter (Good morning!), it may be too strong for some people but for me there's nothing better to kick starts the morning. On warmer days, their large Iced Coffee is my poison. MmmMmmmAhhh.
Chatz also has a really great everything bagel, perfectly dense with the right seeds & seasonings, just like a NY bagel - I kid you not, being born & raised in NYC, it's very close. Get it with a shmear of cream cheese or all Bk-fasted up with an egg & swiss cheese. D'lish. -

Two reasons for this review:
1. Despite what the picture shows, they are very much open.
2. I'm glad they are, because their breakfast smoothie is delicious. -

I must confess that I am not a Chatz regular as it is a detour from my usual route to work, but I come here for those special occasions, like Friday. They are always really friendly and efficient. I love the fact they are independant and take up so little room. The drinks are good and the baked goods (muffins, bagels, pastries, scones) are different - some are amazing! This place really cannot be compared to a coffee shop, as there is no shop, but it exudes it's own charm. Four stars.
Update - My friend turned me on to their Cubano espresso drink. For those occassions when caffeine is required, the Cubano is the preferred instrument. And with their lovely espresso roast, it cannot be bettered. Of course, try asking for a Cubano elsewhere and you are likely to be greeted with blank stares. Plus one star for Chatz! -

Excellent iced coffee. Average pastries, good bagels, and the cheese baguette is not bad.
Brewed coffee is okay. Too much cream cheese on my under toasted bagel. -

Hey, they're open again!
Seems to be the same people working, minus the previous renter/manger ("the coot", as Jeff put it) who's now around the corner at the Snack Depot (and occasionally in front of Chatz harassing people.. how classy).
Decent (though not brilliant) espresso, and I like the fact that this place does coffee and little else. Also, they now have Mexican hot chocolate. -

Worth being late for work for.
After walking by this little hole-in-the-wall on my way to work for a couple months (and almost always seeing a handful of people lined up) I decided to try it out. Their menu comes complete with really good bagels (unlike Starbucks, they can actually toast them), fuits, a basic menu of espresso drinks, and some tasty-looking pastries. Their espresso is far from ideal, but overall prices are pretty cheap ($1.50 for a bagel), and it's quick and convenient. I'm usually out of there in under five minutes. The employees have always been friendly and efficient as well. -

The coffee is good here. Decided to venture out from Peets and I was pleasantly surprised. The coffee is just as tasty and cheaper. I've never tried the other breakfast goodies but they must be good bc I see people ordering them all the time. I'll give them a whirl one day and report back.
Oh and the their customer service is great. They're always super friendly even in the morning. -

Two words: hot chocolate.
The coffee is fine, but the hot chocolate rocks. They make it with real cocoa powder (not that nasty corn syrup stuff they use at other not-to-be-named coffee places). I like to have this with something from their selection of fresh fruit, yogurt, bagels, or other baked goods. To top it off, the service is very friendly. -

Good Americano and they remember how you like it!!! -

Came here for a cup of joe today after rushing out to see the wreckingball taking out the bus terminal on first street. Didn't see the ball or any wrecking going on but, wish I did. So, I began to walk on Howard st lookin g for coffee and just happen to see Chatz sign on the sidewalk. Its an small place most of the items are made to go. A person not paying attention might missed it and not knowing its a coffee place. Overall it was good for the time being and sure needed it.

Best breakfast bagels ever! Seriously... their bagels are the perfect consistency and their breakfast bagels with eggs cheese and your choice of meat (I prefer turkey or bacon) never get soggy or watery (ick). I am lucky enough that this spot is right across the street from my office. Definitely check it out if you are in the area, they also have yummy baked goods like scones and croissants.

I've been wanting to check this place out for the longest time and I finally did it today. Although people rave this place of their coffee, I was in mood for some Mexican Hot Chocolate. And what an EXCELLENT choice that was!! It was so good! It's actually HAND-MIXED and it has a perfect amount of sweetness to it. I like my drink HOT, and indeed it was. Small size for $2.75. I also wanted to try their famous bagels, but they were all sold out. I went there a little bit after 11am so I guess it's understandable. I'll be back to try some coffee and bagels next time!

Good coffee and bagels but they are just to slow in the morning. I'm surrounded by Chatz, Peets, Cafe Trieste and Madelleines so please don't make me wait 15 minutes for a cup of coffee.

Quality bagels and the service is always friendly and as quick as you could expect from such an operation. There's something comforting about stopping by here every morning on my way to work.

Once, the girl looked at me like I was insane for asking if they had egg sandwiches. Their bagels are pretty good, but they never, EVER have the cream cheese I want. I give up.

Before Starbucks opened up next door, this hole in the wall place used to have a monopoly on coffee on the block. It was good, friendly and you got to wait in the street and see lots of co-workers go by while waiting. There seemed to be a slight dip in business when Starbucks first opened but now there is once again a long line every morning. Personally, I will still visit this small local place over Starbucks.

i've been spoiled by blue bottle, four barrel and ritual.
but chatz is great for this area! obviously not the BEST cappuccino i've had but it definitely beats starbucks anyday!
they also had surprisingly fresh and delicious apples and bananas.
the people that work there are also extremely nice.
i'm definitely making it a part of my morning commute. :) -

Today, I stopped by Chatz on my walk to work this morning, having seen a line out the door every morning since I started walking to work from my new apartment around the corner. They do have great coffee, served up hot and quick, but even better bagels. Real NY style bagels, not the glorified rolls with a hole in it that I've had in other shops. Definitely going to be a regular stop for me.

I've tried this place over and over and each time, I'm disappointed. The coffee is fine, but every time I get a bagel, it's burt. The salt bagel had WAY too much salt on it (to where I couldn't eat it--and believe me, I love salt) and the oatmeal is literally cereal with tons of hot water in it. Oatmeal? Seriously? Quaker packets are 10 times better and a whole lot cheaper. They're pretty fast, but not all that friendly.

My favorite place to kick off the day. Although the coffee isn't the best I've had, their food blows doors on Starbucks--fresh bagels, fruit and other pastries. The workers are really friendly, and I've always believed in supporting the local guy when possible.

Their coffee shop on 18th in Potrero has the best mocha I've found. Quaint little building, very friendly. A perfect "mom and pop" shop. And free parking!

I got the best bagel here! It was topped with jalepenos and cheese yummm. Definitely recommend it! There is no seating but you can grab a seat on a ledge outside the nearby businesses and people watch.

Edit: several months ago this coffee closet was bought out by the friendly and clueful man who operates it in the morning. Since then, the coffee has returned to its former glory, and the Mexican hot chocolate has reappeared on the menu. Revising my review from 1 to 4 stars.
Old review: [Tragic. This was the go-to coffee joint in SoMA around 1999. Now it's just bad coffee and burnt milk. The old coot who runs the place in the afternoon doesn't know how to make any of the drinks, nor how much they are supposed to cost. The iced coffee tastes like Windex.] -

Best Mexican hot chocolate in the city - made the old fashioned way with a whisk. Even better, get a Mexican hot chocolate mocha...delish. Nice alternative to the big chains, small joint with a mom & pop feel, and a recent ownership change has the place back in the hands of a sane person.

I work right around the corner so this is where I grab my usual morning coffee & bagel. Don't let the hole-in-the wall look of this place fool you - the coffee is better than anything you'll get at Starbucks or Peet's (maybe not as good as Blue Bottle but whatever). The staff are always really friendly and the service is efficient. They're also open super early in the morning too (like 6AM early) which is perfect for us early morning commuters.
