Review from Lamont P.

I have been to this salon once, but I had been using her hair care products off of her website for a while bc I had been looking for an all natural hair care product for my hair that did not have loads of petroleum and other questionable products.
First, her hair care products are first rate, i have been using them for a while and my hair seems stronger, softer, and has a lot of moisture, which is a never ending problem when you're starting dreads.
Second, when I came into her shop, my appointment was at 1 o clock, and I was seen at 1. I have been at several places before, and along with my mom and my sister's experiences, being seen on time is a shock in and of itself.
Third, everyone, including Chatto is really nice, professional, and they also are welcome to answering any questions you have regarding your hair. Chatto is awesome, but the other stylists know their stuff, and are willing to help anyway they can.
I've only been there once, but I plan to go there again for maintenance, and will update as needed. -

I never even step foot in this place nor had a conversation worth my time. I made an appointment and got sick the day of I called to cancel it at 8am that day. The lady who was rude when i made the appointment told me how dare I cancel an appointment at the last minute. WHAT!?!?! I'm sick lady getta life I'm 5 months pregnant. She then started yelling a bunch of mess about someone driving for 5 hours to get there...I hung up in her face.... so that person was not coming to work today...ITS SATURDAY, what stylist is not at work on Sat.
My thought was to go up there and puke in her face (could barely hold it over the phone) but Ima Christian and I'm trying to hold it together. If she would have given me a chance I would have rescheduled later that day. I remember her saying that we always do this to our people cancel at the last minute. She had an accent so as far as I know she aint my people since my family as far back as slavery is American. WHAT PEOPLE YOU TALKING ABOUT???!!! Maybe Black people hummmm I called you to make an appt to give you business and you pull the race card on me very unprofessional. There is a reason the salon I went to Noel Rose has 5 stars and this place has two. I would bet it has nothing to do with race. If you can't cancel an appointment in the morning before they open on the day of without getting fussed at it's not worth it. What did she think I would say ok I trust YOU with my hair now that you have made it clear that appointments mean so much to this business you would yell hysterically at me for canceling one. Plus they quoted me 120 and I paid 83.00 at Noel Rose for a wash, cut, and blowdry on natural hair.
At noel Rose I got a great haircut, all of them were nice people and I called to cancel an hour before just to test them out (see now I'm thinking all these salons are filled with crazy people) and the manager said ok do you want to come in tomorrow...no I will be there as scheduled...Spectacular. Not a good impression Chatto I'm from GA and you scared me to death I am so glad that you are the only shop in town like this. Noel Rose you have a new loyal customer. Chatto you and that lady will never touch my hair I would probably walk out bald, and not on purpose. -

I never actually got any services here--given the terrible experience I had trying to even make an appointment, I bailed.
When I first called, the unbelievable Chatto answered. She has a thick accent, so I thought I was hearing her incorrectly, but after her third time of repeating it, I realized she REFUSES TO MAKE NEW APPOINTMENTS WITH NEW CLIENTS ON THE THE WEEKEND BECAUSE IF WE CANCEL, SHE LOSES TOO MUCH MONEY.
Sorry, but for an Oak St. salon, I would expect a little more class. Maybe a deposit, or a nice phrasing, or... something that differentiates her from a hood shop.
So instead of losing $$ from established clients, I guess she has chosen to forsake any new ones. Any new ones with self-respect, anyway. The natural hair scene in Chicago is IN DESPERATE NEED of an upscale salon. Ladies, keep looking. -

I am very disappointed. After reading about Chattos' personal accomplishments I decided I wanted to go for a consult for my natural hair. First of all she was the only one of all the natural hairstylists I called to charge $25 for a consult. So of course I'm expecting some analysis, testing, recommendations etc...None of that. She just talked about natural hair in general and some of the products she created for sale. She barely touched my hair and didn't break down the best styles for my curl pattern or anything. When I spoke about different hairstyles, I expected her to ask me about my lifestyle so we could come to a conclusion together about what would be the best look for me. Nope! None of that either.
I was also looking forward to seeing some of her creations since she kept reiterating what an international hairstylist she was. She did not have 1 single picture to show me. Instead we looked at magazines! We finally settled on a style and for 3 fishtail braids and a couple of pieces to attach, her price was $250.00 minus the consultation fee. I would be lying if I said I wasn't shocked! She refused to negotiate saying the time it would take was the same time she uses to put in a full weave for $600. I couldn't understand the correlation.
So, I went home and thought about all the amazing shows she said she participated in and decided to call and negotiate again. She then asked me what day I was planning to do my hair. Mind you, I was very explicit about the date when I called for a consult. I also mentioned the date when I went in. But I repeated the date and she exclaimed "Oh I won't be able to do it because I have 2 events that day". I couldn't believe it and asked if she knew she had events for that day when I called for a consultation. And if so, why would she take my money when she knew she wouldn't be available anyway???
The events she was talking about happens on the same date every year and she participates every year so it was not a brand new thing for her. I stated there was a lack of integrity in taking my money and knowing I couldn't book her anyway because of the clash in dates.
It was a very frustrating call for me because she didn't think she did anything wrong. Needless to say I would never use her services and I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to her.
**By the way, for such a swanky address her salon looked crappy on the inside. Another negative but I didn't care at the time since it was the talent I was more interested in.
Sept. 5, 2011 - I happened to go over my postings and I noticed pictures that were put up of her salon. This must be a total different salon space because in no way did her salon look like that when I entered. I know she was putting together a salon across the street so perhaps its a picture of that one. I think she put this up to negate the fact that the one I went into looked horrible. Hopefully she will take all her clients to this new one since the space definitely looks more inviting. -

I went to this salon once, just moving to Chicago. It was the worst hair experience I have ever had. I have multiracial, curly hair and thought this would be a good choice for me. The stylist used Chatto's own products and pushed products and services the entire time I was there. Also, Chatto's products do not work for everyone and made my hair so tangled and dry that the stylist had to comb so hard to get the tangles out that my hair was sore that night and the next day. So sore that I couldn't even lay down on it. I was quoted a price of $70 over the phone and wound up paying $120. They only accept tips in cash and 2-hour parking is available outside the salon. However, it took the stylist almost four hours to do my hair. Normally it takes two. I will NOT be going back.

Not happy at all. She cut my hair saying she was clipping split ends when I had my hair checked about a week ago for split ends. And she cut almost 1.5-2 inches I know I didn't have that much hair that needed to come off. The haircut is uneven with one side slightly longer than the other and pieces hang down longer. It looks terrible and short.
The styling wasn't good either and because of the greasiness of me hair and the bad cut I ended up putting it in a ponytail walking down the street. The price I paid for this service was ridiculous.
I will say the staff are very kind but I'm not going back ever. -

Overpriced and misleading about kind of products they are using. Does not recommend them. Chatto charges almost $700 for a weave that I have actually gotten somwhere else for $150 that looks much better and last much longer than what Chatto did. The products that Chatto sells for $18.00, $20.00, you can get better products for $5.00 at any beauty supply stores. The inside of her salon is crappy for an Oak street address. I felt like I was ripped off after going there.

I went to Chatto for a weave after I saw the reviews online for the salon. I am not sure where these reviews came from. I was very dissapointed with the work especially for the price that I paid. The weave did not last not even two months, it was grossly overpriced. I would not go back there and does not recommend them.
