I'm not an addict but, the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area for me, is like crack for a crack head.

This place is my paradise in the city.  My natural high.

It's larger than you could ever imagine.  Especially since it's a short drive from Atlanta.  You'll pass magnificent trees, the wide river, bubbling streams, and hike beautiful trails.

If you're drug of choice is running, the CNRA will have you addicted as well.  You can have a peaceful 7 mile run, uninterrupted, through this scenic park.

This is a must go for anyone in need of a natural high.

[Just say no to drugs!  :-)]

In a city with not a lot of walking, sidewalks, nor nature, it was nice to find this little area,

A couple days in Atlanta equates to a lot of driving in cars (i.e more driving in cars than I do for months at a time living in the bay area). It's a strange sensation and after a couple days, I developed the desire to run and stretch my legs, or at least walks for an extended distance. Keep in mind, I am a city girl. I didn't think I would find the compulsion to seek out nature.

With a great view of the river, some bike paths up into god knows where and a relatively flat, paved path for runners, this is just the sort of place I needed to spend some time and go for a stroll during my time in Georgia. Simon and I were able to leisurely stroll along the river and lose oursevles in the slightly more hidden paths for a short amount of time. And of course we did all this in beautiful, sunny, 70 degree weather--on the cusp of spring when the cherry blossoms were out but the pollen had yet to become a problem.

What a wonderful location, but I only wish it were bigger! I didn't explore the entire thing, but I like being able to go on 20 mile bike rides with hills along the American River (road bike friendly!), not just sort 5k runs and paths that require a mountain bike to go anywhere substantial.

I'm a city mouse.  God KNOWS I'm a city mouse.  The country freaks me out, with its quiet and its nature and its clean air.  I'm Zsa Zsa in Green Acres.

New York is where I'd rather stay.  I get allergic smelling hay, indeed.

Still, sometimes, even I need a break from the concrete and asphalt, the Georgia asphalt as it were.  And so I suggested that the girl and I head down yonder to the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area.  And yes, I can confirm that, in July, it is indeed hotter than a hoochie coochie.

No matter.  It, being nature, has plenty of shade and an entire river to use to cool off.  We weren't dressed to tube, nor did we bring any floatation devices, but it looked awfully tempting.  Tempting enough that I made mental note of the different raft and tube rentals nearby.  Instead of shooting said 'hootch though, the girl and I explored some of the available trails.

There actually are several miles of trails available, some more arduous than others, but none so bad an out-of-shape Asian with asthma couldn't handle it.  In fact, it was the girl who pleaded to turn back at one point, her Southerness melting in the sun. "Oh, the vapors!" she declared while fanning herself.

Did I mention it was hotter than a hoochie coochie?

The trails are well-marked and well-kept.  The only complaint I had were the self-centered morons who rode their bikes on the foot-only trails and shot you dirty looks because you were "in their way."  Hey, Lance Armstrong, you're lucky I don't shove a stick in the spokes of your front wheel.

Parking is $3. The station on the east side of the river takes credit/debit cards and gives change if all you have is a $5.  Pay the parking, you skinflint.

In all, I really like the Chattahoochee National Rec Area.  It's enough to almost make me almost live in Cobb County.  Almost.  OK, not really, because the park isn't made of bacon and supermodels, and that's what it would take to get me to move to Cobb. But it sure is a nice place to visit.  Four and a half stars.

BTW, I don't know what's up with the strange address attributed to the park since it's not really in this zip code.  You're better off looking up the address on the park website.

Best place to run in Atlanta, particularly on crisp, sunny mornings in the fall.

My house growing up was in a very wooded neighborhood, so the thing that I missed the most in coming to Atlanta was the nature.  Once I found this place, it made me like Atlanta so much more - to know that woods and a stream were just a little ways away.

I must say that this place is quite popular, particularly for folks with dogs, so weekends are quite crowded.  Even though you're away from the cars, the people traffic prevents you from getting that alone with nature feeling.  Still on weekday afternoons, particularly when the days are short and it's cool outside, it's a great place to recharge while walking or running on the well-laid out, maintained, and marked paths.  I particularly like to do some long training runs here, since you can make it a 10K just by doing the loop twice, and it's nice to run on gravel and dirt instead of asphalt every once in a while.

If you're going once a month or more, it's totally worth it to get the annual pass.  Don't be one of the jerks who doesn't pay - the path has washed out a couple of times with heavy rain, and it takes park employees to keep it as nice as it is.

You atlantonians, atlantonites, atlantians, well, whatever y'all are, are very lucky to have this GEM of a place.

Was visiting a friend who lives in the Vinings; asked her if there was anyplace close to go for a run, and she gave me directions to here.  It is clean, scenic, paved with left and right lanes, and relatively flat until you get to the end.  A runner's dream.  About a 5 K there and back.  You can even bring your dog.

If there is one thing that keeps me in Atlanta it's the Chattahoochee River.  Knowing that I can drive ten minutes up the road and escape all the chaos and noise means a lot to me.  You see, I's raised out in the country and I kinda like it.

The NRA is comprised of about 15 or so units stretching from Lake Lanier to US 41.  There are also several municipal parks between the NRA units.  I vist the Paces Mill and Cochran Shoals units most often and I think those two are probably the most visited due to their proximity to Atlanta.  I noticed a new parking fee system had been installed last time I was there.  The place accepts credit cards for fee payment now.  If you plan to visit often, buy a park pass($25) which is good at all the NRA areas and lasts for a full year.

Every nature loving Atlantan should float the Hooch at least once in their lives.  Kayaking and canoeing outfitters can set you up for a day of paddling.  There are bike and jogging trails as well as nature trails for day hikes.  I mainly go there to fish.  Brown and rainbow trout are stocked regularly.  Nothing beats a warm spring evening when the fish are rising.

We love to take our dogs here.  The park is very well maintained and the trail is very easy to follow.  Once you pull in, pay for parking ($3) and head up toward the trail and along the river.  The dogs love to run up and down the sandy banks, and there are a lot of neat little coves to hang out in.
