Fear Not! We thought that the winery had closed as well.
We went to Napa over Thanksgiving weekend and drove all the way out to Chateau Potelle for some VGS and found the property with a "for sale" sign in front. We had left a message prior to our trip to see what their weekend hours would be and got a call back from one of the guys at the winery. They did sell the property and grapes to a different vineyard, but are relocating and should be finished in April 2009. Yay VGS!! -

GORGEOUS, Gorgeous, gorgeous!
out of all the places i visited in Napa/Sonoma, Chateau Potelle topped them all! it's a bit of a drive up, but like everyone else before me has said, it's SO worth it. the drive is not bad at all, and is actually pretty peaceful. it's nice b/c it's away from all the more commercialized wineries/vineyards, and you feel like you're in on the chateau potelle secret.
i would recommend grabbing a sandwich from the oakville grocery (which is always packed, but their sandwiches are so good) and taking it up to the chateau. there, grab a bottle or two of the most tasty wine, and have a little picnic in their "backyard." and their backyard is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. you look down to see row after row of lush grape vines.
the employees are also very helpful and funny, and they have an adorable dalmatian who is very friendly. also, when you get there, ask them what "VGS" of their VGS wines stands for. haha... i love zee french.Listed in: Cute Overload.,

What a find! So what, if you need to have National Geographic Explorer's training to find this place;) For the feint of heart, beware the drive is a 5 mile or so uphill, on a twistiy road, which leads you to a 1800ft elevated breathtaking vineyard.
But once you get there, OMG, the view is great there on Mt. Veeder.
Upon entering the tasting room, we noticed it was very small, but intimate. Jenn and I decided to eat our lunch that we had just got from Oakville Grocery. Tony, the man in charge of wine tasting, kindly suggested that we eat on the terraced deck in back or anywhere we found comfortable. After a great lunch, we commenced the tasting and were impressed with the reds, especially the Cabs. Potelle's reserve wines are labeled VGS, which the owner aptly named after the thought that anything that was to be considered "reserve" was "Very Good Sh...t". That is awesome!
If you want a great unassuming wine tasting, come to this small mom and pop vineyard which has great wine and great views. Cheers! -

Disclaimer: If you are afraid of heights, you have no business driving 5 miles of off-the-beaten path, hidden, highly elevated (1800 ft) twisting, winding wooded road, but once you are there, you will enjoy breath-taking views of Napa.
The winery itself is small--10 people would crowd the place, but next to the Coppolas and the Mondavis, this little "winery dive" is worth a trip. Their high-end series is called VGS...we were told it stands for "Very Good Shit."
It doesn't get better than that... -

Family lives in Napa and know the valley well. Get a friend, go to Oakville market, get yourself some sandwich's and whatever else you like to eat. Drive up to CP, get a bottle of wine and sit at their picnic tables and enjoy!! Away from the crowds, great wine, lovely setting. This is a Napa valley must. Almost don't want to post a review as I have wanted to keep this place to myself for years.

Update: Sadly I must say the winery has closed down and I understand is now up for sale. I have been told it is the result of a divorce although that is admittedly a rumor.Comment from VGS F. of Chateau Potelle 7/13/2011

It's a beautiful drive up to some fantastic vistas and wine that truly deserves the "VGS" name. If you're using a GPS system, it will likely point you to a non-descript gate with a call box. "Surely, this can't be it," you say to yourself. It's not. No, it's not the even more non-descript looking gate behind you, either. Keep going up the road. For some reason, nearly all GPS systems have trouble finding Chateau Potelle. I'm so glad we decided to shun technology and keep on down the road.

A great find. Off the beaten track, great views of the valley, fantastic wine, and a great drive. The tasting room is very intimate and they have picnic tables if you want to bring lunch. The wine is exceptional, although their cabs and zins will need to sit in your cellar for a couple years before they reach their prime.
