I came here a while back because everyone was telling me how unbelieveably good this place is.

I had some sort of Kung Pao rice bowl that was the special of the day. It was SO SALTY that my fingers got puffy and I felt the need to guzzle copious amounts of water. Couldn't really taste the ingredients because of the salty sauce everything was swimming in.

I recently tried one of the salad wraps and it was meh. It would have been better with a piece of tofu inside. I've had better veggie rice paper rolls/wraps from Whole Foods and what not.

I do like that they use a lot of local, organic items. It's a really great thing.

I am sure I will inevitably end up back there by no choice of my own. I will probably try a plain salad with the dressing on the side and hope for the best. Maybe it will give me the chance to upgrade this review to four stars, or perhaps it will only cement my three stars. We shall see...

I came here a couple of months ago and decided to do a review today. This place is not very good.

It is advertised as Chinese food but in reality it is no more Chinese food than Taco Bell Mexican food. But I was hungry, and it was late and it was summer so all my friends were back in either San Francisco or LA.

I ordered the Spicey Dan's Peanut Delight. It was edible but not at all satisfying. But hey, it was cheap and I was hungry. One extra star on their outdoor seating because it made me feel like I was in Vietnam during midnight eating with the white locals. Well not really the white locals part but it made me feel like I was at my parent's motherland.

* I became a Yelp reviewer bc this place sucked so bad *

Ordered the Mixed Vegetable bowl with Spicy Ginger Beef. Vegetables were wilted and gross, not stir fried crispy. Bowl had a HUGE ball of Ginger on the bottom. The beef was large CHUNKS of stringy meat.

Pick Up Stix, Panda Express, and every other place has figured out stir fry. Why can't Charlie's?

*Update 1/12/2010*
Been a little busy to update this. I was contacted by the owner via Yelp Msngr about a month ago. He gave a nice rundown on the different options for preparation (e.g. getting veggies stir fried) and the concept behind CHK. He even offered to send me out a gift certificate if I was willing to try them again. At the minimum, this speaks volumes about the owner and the pride he takes in his business. I will be visiting CHK again, but as a paying customer so I get to remain anonymous ...

*Updated 1/28/10*

Came by and tried the "Spicy Dan's Peanut Delight" with chicken. The chicken was not very good bc the sauce gave it a slimy mouth feel. Not worth the $9 by any stretch of the imagination.

Sorry Charlie (Darryl) you had two shots at both my mouth & wallet. You won't get another.

Now I have 2 favorite places to eat at when I'm in Santa Cruz, because Charlie Hong Kong is the bomb dot com!!!
Last night we went to a show at the Crepe place (tight bar with great food) and so we crossed the street for some late night fine-dining at  Charlie Hong Kong. I had the spicy chili noodle salad, sooo goood! Who knew avocado would pair perfectly well with an Asian chili pepper sauce, it was like a match made in heaven if you ask me! And, with everything under 9 dollars, I was happier than a fat kid in a candy store. I will not hesitate to come back for more the next time I find myself in Santa Cruz.

Fine pseudo-Asian street food.

Try the peanut-sauced dish.

Also, the chicken noodle soup is not half bad.

Enjoy!

WARNING WARNING WARNING! This is not C-H-I-N-E-S-E FOOD!

This reminds me of the taco bell of the real mexican food... They serve you rice.. doesn't mean it is Chinese food, yadadamean?

I still like this place, because it is cheap, fast service, and the portion is huge....  They have a lot to choose from in the menu...I always get the teriyaki rice bowl and the curry chicken bowl.  There cute places to seat outside... with red rights....

Oh ya I forgot to mention, Most of the stuffs here are organic, so recommended if you are the "healthy" type : ) or vegetarians.

a rice bowl is a rice bowl.  here you get rice bowls with cold sprouts and store-bought sauce.
however, it's cheap, it's fast, and it fills you up.  mission accomplished.

plus, Boy says that the vietnamese sandwich he had was pretty good.

Charlie, your time has come.

Flavorless - say it with me: F-L-A-V-O-R-L-E-S-S

You've let me down too many times. I've given you a shot every now and again, but today is the last time. Supposedly having "organic" produce is no reason to have absolutely no flavor in your dishes.

I got the vietnamese chicken noodle soup, thinking it might have some sort of relation to Pho. WRONG!! Way Wrong!

So bland and dry that a cotton ball would probably taste better going down my throat.

Avoid Charlie, you'll thank me later.

Sadly I don't even know where to start w/ this place. it's just not what it used to be. The prices have gone up alot. The food is not nearly as good as it used to be not sure if there's a new cook or what. Honestly it made me ill the last time I grabbed a quick lunch there. I'd love if they added a couple of salads things that aren't so heavy. The service was good though which makes me feel bad for being so harsh.

This is a nice little joint.

My niece introduced me to this place and I can see returning here.

I had the teriyaki salmon rice bowl. Good call, me. It's reasonably priced for a good amount of food and tastes pretty darn good.

The place has a few tables in a patio and service is fairly quick.

Alright alright, so the name is less the fresh. This is true. And no, it is not authentic asian food.

What it is, however, is a great place to grab a delicious bite with friends. I come here just about every time I make it to Santa Cruz, usually after a long day at the beach before I make the venture over the 17 and back to the comfy east bay.

It's a bowl joint. Noodles, veggies and sauces make up the bulk of the cuisine here. It's quick (order up in about 5 mins) tasty and relaxed. There is complimentary *filtered* water (they were sure we knew it, oh how sc!) and $1 all you can drink oolong tea. Of course they feature vegan organic and other dietary accommodations but do so in such a way that you don't feel you're eating trendy or pretentiously, you're just eating. It's a no frills joint with an order and pick up window and seating. I must note that I am impressed with how manicured the place is. Even the bathroom seems special in some way.

There is in door seating but I prefer the outdoor covered patio with heavy wooden benches and tables.

There is just something magical about the dinning area. There are signs that encourage you to share your table with others, just below it "the possibilities are endless". It's just got a nice vibe to it and you can't beat all of your friends gathered around the hefty tables sharing good memories, making new ones, and sampling one another's dishes. god, i've been watching far too much anthony bourdain!

20 bucks for a beer, a huge box of pad thai and a big box of salmon terriyaki with rice. . .2 meals for 2 people. And I TRIED to eat all of mine.

The pad thai was rich and complex and not too sweet. Tangy and bright, there was lemon grass. . .is there tomato in this peanut sauce? I couldn't place all the flavors. I just kept shoving it in my mouth. it had chard. No egg. I stopped counting at 3 kinds of fresh mushrooms, along with all kind of other really good veggies. No giant woody crinkle cut carrots. It was topped with tons of fresh cilantro, bean sprouts, and peanuts that were fresh halves and didn't taste stale like they'd been ground for weeks. Yummy. I topped it all with chicken that had been soaked in coconut milk and green chilis. Delicious.

The terriyaki salmon was very good. Generous portion of salmon on good white rice. also with bean sprouts and cilantro.

There is something here for everyone from vegan to omnivore.

They have a good selection of beers by the bottle in the cooler, and a nice covered area outside to eat when it's warm enough, as well as counter bar inside for when it's not.

There are many other things I want to try on the menu. Though I got carry out, I could have chosen to either have my beer opened there or take it with me. I drank it while I waited.

This is definitely a place to come back to. The price is right, the atmosphere is cozy and cute and the food was excellent.

Thinking of Hong Kong Phooey every time I say the name. . .pretty much sure that's totally my problem - but actually a bonus.
-------------
It's now the next day - I'm eating the leftover pad thai cold and it's even better than it was yesterday. And spicier. YUM

Why is this place so popular? If you like meat, it's not especially cheap. The beef on my beefy rice bowl was really, really dry. The veggies were all raw which made for a weird texture combination. It was just dry beef + raw veggies + plain white rice. Sure, it was edible and probably healthy enough...I didn't feel sick after eating it, which is a plus?

The bf didn't like his curry chicken rice bowl either.

101+ reviews of this place as of June 2009 and close to 4 stars. That pretty much sums it up and there is not much I can add. But a fee quick points.

One: This place is consistently voted one of the areas best places to eat.

Two: Food is EXCELLENT.

Three: This is not a sit down, table service, bring a date, dinner meeting, special occasion type place. It's a casual quick lunch or dinner before a show (Rio Theater next door)  type place.

Four: You order at counter and pick up your food when called. They do serve alcohol I believe. You sit outside under protected area although there are a few seats (like 3) inside where you order.

Five: OMG, so much food for the money.

Can't go wrong. Excellent place.

This place is pretty darn good.  Their Dans Delight is great, Gado Gado, a bit pricey if you want to add any meat (or tofu) though...Also, they charge WAY TOO much for a side of peanut sauce.  Everything there goes great with peanut sauce...but you never want to pay for it because you just paid ten bucks for some noodles and meat. Also, in their to go orders, they don't mix the ingredients together.  I just got a Little Dan, and the  noodles were at the bottom (stuck together) and then the veggies, and a tiny bit of peanut sauce.  I really could have used a side of peanut sauce...Come on guys, put a little effort into mixing it?  Please?

Heading up to Santa Cruz for an art show, my friends introduced me to Charlie Hong Kong. It's apparently a Santa Cruz institution my friends visit every time they're up north. After Friday night's meal, I can see why. The food was quite tasty and great to see they only use organic ingredients--it's better for the environment and better for you. My sometimes-vegetarian friend also applauds the abundance of vegetarian options here.

Charlie Hong Kong is a great bargain--we all easily ate for under $10 each, and even had enough leftover for lunch the next day! The portions on the peanut delight noodle bowl I ordered were generous. I added the curry chicken to the noodles and was initially skeptical of the combination, but found it was actually quite good. My only complaint would be the heavy hand with the cilantro, but this was easily forgiven. I'll definitely be back next time I'm up in Santa Cruz.

This is my idea of fast food! They have so many vegetarian options, but it is set up so that you can get the same dish with any kind of protein you wish or none at all. Very cool concept.

The atmosphere and overall appearance is playful and soothing at the same time. You can get great food quickly to take with you or eat there.

Simple, flavorful, fast service, quality ingredients, huge selection, just overall satisfying. The prices are reasonable imo.

Why is it that all of the good veggie food in the Bay Area is in Santa Cruz?  It makes me sad that I can't go to these places all of the time without going to SC.

Chinese food is normally a vegetarian's nightmare.  When my friend suggested to go to CHK, I groaned and wondered if he'd forgotten that I'm vegetarian.  But it turns out that Charlie Hong Kong is another amazing SC joint that has something for everyone: omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, you name it.  The food not only tastes great, it's really cheap too, and the portions are generous.  Spicy Dan's Peanut Delight and Laughing Phoenix Red Curry = delicious.  I'd seriously go here everyday if it was located near me.  Btw, going by foot or bike is best, as the parking lot is small and it can get crowded easily.

It's taken me 6 visits to this place, each time trying something different - finally I found something I like!  The previous 5 times, I should have taken the hint that their specialty would not be meat from the words "vegan and vegetarian" printed on the menus many times.

Spicy Dan's Peanut Delight with Tofu topping

It hit the spot on a cold day, plenty of veggies, tasty tofu and a nice spicy sauce (I added a generous squirt of Sriracha, I likes it SPICY).  This is also the first time I did not get mad heartburn from the food, probably an added benefit of the lack of meat.

Adding CHK to my short list of vegan places that don't totally suck.

Spicy Dan's Peanut delight. mmm. with green curry chicken.

pricy? somewhat.  authentic? no.  But hey, Santa Cruz doesn't exactly harbor the best in Asian cuisines.  A small topping of meat will cost you almost $3.  The pho, though i haven't' tried it, seems to satisfy on a cold day.

So its not 100% authentic, but it hits the spot when you've got the cravings.

First off, racist name. There, I said it.

I'm pretty sure this is some pale-folks idea of cheap Asian-fusion with an SC organic twist, 'cause the last time I checked Asian street food wasn't prepared like CHK.

Is it me or do they put too much cilantro in everything? Their meats are typically less flavorful than you would anticipate. Actaully, come to think about it, all there dishes end up melding into one bland flavor. But hey, if you want a lot of Asian-ish food for $7, then come here.

I've been coming year for years and have recommended this place to many people as a great inexpensive place to eat.  I love the rice bowl with chicken curry topping and a side of vegetable medley (you'll get a ton of healthy cheap food if you order each item a la carte).  The Vietnamese sandwich with salmon is also fabulous.  The springtime goddess salad is also great on a hot day.

However, I advise staying away from the pad thai.  The sauce tastes like it has a tomato base; whatever it is, the flavor is quite unappealing.  And they don't have the option of adding egg.  All in all, I'd say it's probably the worst pad thai I've ever had.

I think that Abby and I have been here over a 100 times. If you are not in the mood to cook and aren't a fan of fast food, this is a great healthy alternative. It's not mind blowing, but as far as take out goes it's pretty solid. Yes panda express is cheaper, but they are not organic and prepared fresh to order. Also I love the atmosphere here; especially at night sitting outside under the canvass and red lights, watching the traffic go by, kicking back a cold Tsingtao with Abby... (probably one of the few fond culinary moments I have of Santa Cruz).

Go for the Laughing Phoenix Red Curry! So good.

I love, love, love this place!  So many good vegetarian and vegan options, but not to worry-if you feel like meat, you can easily have them add several different meat options to your bowl.  They also use a variety of organic and local ingredients, which I think is pretty awesome and I wish more restaurants followed their example.  Charlie Hong Kong has quickly become one of my "must haves" when in the Santa Cruz area.

I really enjoy this place. The food is good for the price. It's certainly not "authentic" Chinese, but frankly over half the people who use that term haven't had real Chinese food anyway. I'm not sure why people are complaining about the price, because I can't imagine going over $10 per person here!

What's great is that the food is organic and in some instances local, and I'm a big proponent of that. And really, this place is cheap for FAST food, let alone organic!

90% of what I've had here is delicious and it's very light on my wallet. The other 10% was a little bland, but it was still cheap and it's nothing that a little (or a lot) of Sriracha sauce can't fix (seriously, what CAN'T it fix?). The cashiers can be brusque and the entrance is a little awkward and cramped, but the atmosphere is really unique and fun for summer evenings. I just wish they were open later...

If you're ambivalent, this place is definitely worth a try at least once. In the off chance you don't like it for some reason, at least you're only out a fiver.

This place is the opposite of a crappy Americanized low quality ingredients Chinese place with traditional Chinese kitsch dining room.  They seem to be Asian fusiony, with Thaiesque and Vietnammy dishes, and even a bit Cantonese with their "sit next to random other people" dining tent, which happens to be quasi outdoors and nicely heated.  Yay Cali.  We got:

Spicy Dan's Peanut Something: YUM!  Tasted not at all spicy, kind of like Thai with plenty of the good creamy stuff... popular with the cool people.

Gado Gado topped with Green Curry Chicken - Not sure the Gado itself made a difference, more like only the toppings mattered.  The server recommended this and we all liked it.

Vietnamese Noodle Soup: simple but pleasant... none of that wet dog smell this one often has.  A favorite among one of us.

Hoisin Pork: yum, but it needed more sauce.  Nonetheless, they put a bunch of ingredients in this one, which made for a nice mix.  We all liked it but I don't think it was anyone's number one.

Cookies: they had a peanutty white one that I loved and a chocolatey one that the cutie liked.  Take your pick!

First things first.

Is the name racist?

Hmmm, perhaps.

Is it authentic Asian street food?

No, not even close.

Does it matter? Not really as the reason I find this place so disappointing is that the food is just bland, uninspired and overpriced.

The debate about authenticity kind of misses the point anyway. Authenticity only exists in a fictional world where everything stays the same, nothing evolves and no one shares ideas. Is tomato sauce and polenta authentic to Italian cuisine? Depends. If Italian cuisine starts at the point of introduction of corn and tomatoes from the new word then yes. If you go back further, then no. Heck, pasta wasn't even regularly paired with tomatoes until the 1800's because of the mistaken notion that since tomatoes are in the nightshade familly then the fruit must be poisonous as well.

The Vietnamese have incorporated items and techniques from China, France, Cambodia and Thailand. The cuisines varies from the north to the south as well as regionally. To argue over what's authentic is pointless. However we can debate about what's good or not so good.

Charlie Hong Kong is simple not very good. Alright, but not good. The first thing that's off about this place is the use of "toppings". If you want to have anything worth eating you must add at least one topping at a cost of 2 to 4 dollars. So now your street food noodle bowl costs around 9 bucks. Ridiculous!

However that is not the true problem with the "toppings" concept. The toppings concept betrays the very idea of cuisine itself. How can you have a menu of distinct regional dishes yet also allow people to mix and match any topping. Dishes should have distinct flavor profiles.

A simple example is the Sweet Garlic Tofu topping. You can add it to Charlie's Pad Thai, Charlie's Chow Mein, Spicy Dan's Peanut Delight, Laughing Phoenix Red Curry, Gado Gado, or Chaing Mai Noodles. Does the tofu flavor profile really work with any of these dishes? Unfortunately not. Some are passable but most are horrid.

This is the same problem whether you pick the Tofu, the Green Curry Chicken, Hoisin Pork, or Spicy Ginger Beef toppings. If you went to an Italian restaurant they simply wouldn't offer the option of spicy peanut sauce for your spinach ravioli, nor would a sushi restaurant offer an herbal feta cheese topping for your tuna roll. They do this for your own protection!

But enough of my "toppings" rant. Let's talk about the food.

My vegetables are always bland and immediately start sweating in the bowl. Halfway through my noodles are soaking in puddle of warm vegetable flavored water.  Yuck. It feels like they saute without oil or perhaps even boil the veggies.

Every time I've eaten here I've had to hit my dish with liberal does of hot sauce just to make it palatable. This goes for the so-called "spicy" dishes as well.

My partner, however, seems pleased with the Vietnamese sandwich. I've never ordered the sandwich in a misguided "cut my nose to spite my face" principle that ordering a deli sandwich in a noodle house is just  wrong.

Also, I'm not much for sandwiches anyway, which is probably closer to the real reason I don't order it.

Pluses: Big portions, organic and veggie friendly.
Minuses: Bland, uninspired, overpriced compared to noodle houses over the hill (although I wouldn't  even be complaining about the cost if the food was amazing)

I've tried a few of the dishes here, but didn't really like any of them except for the teriyaki salmon rice bowl.  But that one dish is really good.  A bowl of white or organic brown rice, topped with some salmon with teriyaki sauce, bean sprouts, carrots, green onions, and a few things I'm forgetting.  It's a great combination when doused with sriracha and hoison sauce (because otherwise it can be a bit dry).  I eat here once a week, easily.

I know a lot of other people like the other stuff this place has to offer, but since I've only found one thing on the menu I like, this place gets three stars (and my weekly business).

A glowing Metroactive review brought me to this corner for dinner, on a glorified staycation trip with the husband. We had just finished an inadvertent five-hour hike in Big Basin (great place, signage issues, yes we paid $3 for the map), so I was dehydrated and my husband was starving. Bad sign -- he's one of those fast metabolism people that vibrate with predatory anger when the digestive system is empty. Worse sign -- he hates bad food.

I wanted to love Charlie Hong Kong. Yeah, I'll throw in my Chinese opinion in the mix and say it's not racist -- it's kitsch. Hell, it'd fit into the crazy fusion diners in Hong Kong, which has had specialties like hot dog soup and hot lemon Coke (which by the way is supposed to have curative powers. What kind, I'm not sure).  The review highlighted CHK's organic approach, and about the pad thai's "tomato-tamarind" sauce. How daring, I thought. How brilliant, I mused.

So I get to the corner stand with its appropriately kitschy decor and largely non-Asian staff. Fusion's fusion -- and besides, if you look into many California "ethnic" kitchens nowadays, don't be surprised if you see Mexican staffers making sushi, Korean, and Chinese dishes. Besides, the counterperson is extremely friendly. My husband however has a bad feel about this place, and I chide him for his conservatism.

The words I have to eat later still weren't as disappointing as the meal I had. I don't give out one-star reviews because frankly, I don't go to one-star places. The order:

Tiger prawns topping with pad thai and the much anticipated tomato-tamarind sauce. Result: Glop and confusion. The appeal of the toppings being interchangeable is also its fatal flaw: The prawns had been made with teriyaki sauce or something, so clashed with the gloppy, overly salty flavors of the pad thai. (I'm sensitive to salt, my husband's inured to it, and he thought it was salty.) The noodles themselves, when excavated from the sauce, would probably have been passable and the vegetables were very fresh.

Hoi sin pork with peanut-curry noodles. Result: Not as bad, but disappointing. Again, the flavor clash, and the larger cuts of pork was as dry as that shredded pork you sprinkle on rice porridge.  The sauce was much lighter -- so much lighter as to be barely discernible in curry-ness. Again, great vegetables, passable noodles.

With the single bottle of beer, the entire meal was about $25. I can only hope I went on a bad night (Thursday), or that the other items I didn't try more than redeems these offerings. Otherwise, I'd be very sad for all those hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants who slave to make a far superior meal for half that price, but don't get the diners who think Charlie Hong Kong is some kind of daring experiment.

The P.S.: We drove to Betty's Burgers after to get salvation, and got a measure of it there.

I love Charlie Hong Kong!

There.  You need not read any further.

Seriously though, CHK is The Place to go if you want a healthy meal served quick.  This is Chinese food prepared California-style, which means:
*Organic Vegetables
*Vegetarian Menu, offers with protein add-on choices of tofu, chicken, etc.
*Eclectic Pan-Asian sauces that twist the usual Pad Thai or Rice Bowl into a taste sensation.

Drink selections are wonderfully wide-ranging from Santa Cruz Natural Sodas to about six different kinds of beer.

Yummy yummy.  You'll feel like Superman after a meal here and be ready to go for your next adventure.

First of all, it's important to note that this restaurant got voted "best meal for a deal" in Santa Cruz. That being said, the food is good and the portions are satisfactory. You are definitely getting your money's worth here. However, what the food saves in price it lacks in flavor. It's mediocre really. The noodles are bland and I was just craving something more. But, it wasn't a totally bad experience either. I just would have rather spent a little bit extra in order to have a more substantial meal. That being said, I do disregard this place completely. It's a cool place to come for a quick and cheap bite to eat. You won't leave hungry and the food isn't bad by any means. They also serve beer helps. The seating is outdoor picnic table style. You can be as loud as you want which is good if you're with a group of people.

A bland, overpriced shop that pales in comparison to the real McCoy.  Too bad most of the good Noodle Houses are in SF and SJ... but I refuse to go here simply based on their exorbitant prices (really? 8 or more bucks for a bowl of Noodles? No F***ing way!).

I've got a better idea.  Turn around, and go to the Real Thai Kitchen across the street.  Same price, but phenomenally better food.  I recommend their simple Yellow Curry with sweet potatoes and chicken.

One of my favorite places for lunch!

Fresh ingredients, good size portions, and TASTY!

I have been going here for years, and love the rice bowls.

You get to pick from an array of protiens, and then get to layer on additional veggies and sauces to make unique entree combinations.

The dine in options are clean and inviting for lunch.

Highly recommend!!

Oooh this was tasty... a lot of random Asian food thrown together on the menu to make organic vegetarian ethnic fusion! I ordered a non messy vietnamese style mushroom medley sandwich. I chomped it down within minutes - thoroughly enjoyed. Heated outdoor seating on a cold and rainy November night. I like that to-go boxes, silverware, and such items are outside so that you don't have to flag down a waiter. The only thing I felt was lacking was that the thai coconut soup could have had more flavor. There could have been more variety in drinks as well.

My experience here made my short stay in Santa Cruz that much better!

Ahhh CHK! Every time I visit Santa Cruz, I have to stop at Charlie Hong Kong. This place has everything that I want great food (I dream about their Butternut Squash Soup and Hoisin Pork), great value (cheap prices and enormous portions) and fun and funky atmosphere (if I have to go into another Starbucks carbon copy, I might just go insane).

One of the biggest complains I've been reading about is that it's not authentic. Nowhere in the restaurant do they claim to be authentic. I've been to Asia, and I can tell you that the average American would not enjoy authentic Asian food.

CHK is fantastic! If you've eaten there before, you should give it another try. If you haven't, then you are in for a real treat. I could eat there every day and be happy.

BE AWARE, if you are looking for a gluten free place, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOPR YOU.
I asked them once to boil my rice noodles in a different pot than the wheat noodles... the result  : I got  really sick.

My friend who is allergic to Soy Sauce, and asked them no to add it to his food, got and extra splash of ....soy sauce!

They didn't pay any attention to the customers requests!

Before being in a Gluten Free diet, I visited the place several times, since CHK is a good hang out cheap food place to visit with friends, unfortunately ALWAYS the food was blend and nothing special.
