We went here for breakfast. The service was great. We were brought water right way and our waitress was friendly. She even offered to take a picture of our group. She took our orders quickly as well.

The food tasted delicious and the portions were large. My sister ordered the surfer stack of pancakes - 2 pancakes. When the waitress brought them out we were all wide-eyed. They were the biggest pancakes we had all ever seen! They were each 1 1/2 " thick and 12" in diameter. Wow! She got the buttermilk pancakes and they were sooo tasty. You also had your choice of coconut of maple syrup. We tried the coconut but it wasn't for us. It was a bit too sweet. It tasted like it was made to go on top of ice cream, not pancakes. So, we stuck with the maple syrup.

I ordered scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, home fries, and sourdough toast. My meal was also delicious. The eggs were hot and fully cooked. The home fries were fabulous! I definitely recommend ordering them. The bacon was crispy, just like I requested.

This was my last meal on Maui and it was a great way to end my trip!

**Beware**  Don't ask for any substitutions, and if you do prepared to be treated like shit!

So Charley's is an OK place to get a sat/sun breakfast.  The prices are decent and the portions are huge.  The reason it's getting only 2 stars is that they don't do ANY kind of substitutions.  So I am a health conscious person ok, and I wanted the Mediterranean omelet.  I asked the waitress if i could have it made with only egg whites, and a little amount of olive oil instead of butter.  She looked at me smirked and said "we'll see".  So she brings the food out and I ask her if it was made with olive oil.  She replies " Yeah but you seriously don't know what I had to do to get it that way".  Ok....seriously?  Is it that hard in the kitchen?  All the cooks have to do is not use butter...right?  I understand if they don't do any substitutions but if they are going to make an exception for you..I really wish the waitress wouldn't have made me feel like shit for asking..I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew she was going to be sooo rude for the rest of our dining experience.

Whatever!  I'm over Charley's and their RUDE service!

Bar review only!  Nothing but kama'aina here.  Everyone knows everyone, except me, of course.  Lots of good people having a good drink hanging out.  Decent selection of Ok beer, a few Hawaiian beers as well.  Massive flat screens up on the wall showing sports and surf movies.

Just a cool place to hang out.  Famous for their happy hour specials that change often and are probably the best in Pi'ia.

Went here for lunch & it was ok.  Service was ok, food was ok (they were out of my first choice) and beer was ok.  Not horrible but just didn't stand out...I may go back when we get here on Saturday but if we don't I wont be upset.

I enjoyed the "big" plate size pancake. Very fluffy. Also got a side of biscuit and gravy; two biscuits.

I ordered a teriyaki style burger and it was so yummy (didn't look like much, but was VERY good).  The husband and Eight-year-old daughter shared a burger and a salad, both were good.
It was a late afternoon on a Wednesday, so kind-of slow. There was a HUGE spider on one of the windows which became a conversation piece and tourist attraction for everyone, we took lots of pictures.
We looked for Willie Nelson, but never saw him (Hubby is a huge fanI).
Would definitely go back, I've heard the pancakes are delicious, so next time we'll go for breakfast!

Our waitress was amazing. She mentioned that she and her husband had spent their recent anniversary on Kauai, which was where we were headed next.  She recommended a few places for us to visit!

Charley's is what you expect and want from old-school Maui. We stopped in after coming down from Haleakala and headed into Paia.
First off, this place gets four stars for the Willie Nelson and Great Dane connections, of which I am a lover of both.
We stopped in, the wait service was nice, just what you'd expect from a roadside diner, not gold star level but attentive and pleasant.
My food was awesome. Sausage gravy and biscuits, are you kidding? At 1130A on a Tuesday. Genius.
My mom had a huge fish entree that actually looked like it could have come from a Michelin star level restaurant. Shocking but in a good way.
I had a bloody mary which came from the gigantic bar in the back room.

I would call this an absolute must-stop in Paia or on the way to Hana. Hearty breakfast in an old-school style.

I hit this place up with my dad and brother in law after doing the whole watch the sunrise and then fly like a bat out of hell down Mt. Haleakala on a rickity mountain bike with no rear brakes.

I had French toast topped with Mandarin oranges and macadamia nuts.  Very tasty and both my dad (who had been there before) and my B.I.L. (first visit) enjoyed their breakfasts as well.  Service was good, our waitress promptly filled my water up like a half dozen times.  The menu had quite a bit to offer for breakfast including some daily specials.

I suspect (by looking at the other reviews and by their menu) that this place is best during the morning meal.  The pancakes are beasts (as I found out during a second visit, again with good service) and I would hit this place up again next time I'm on Maui.

Food is average at best.   Totally inflexible on food allergy substitutes.   Can't eat eggs and no substitutes allowed for breakfast.   Won't come here again.

No real Hawaiian breakfast.

My uncle used to live in a house right behind Charley's and I would stay there for long periods of time. Willie Nelson always visits here when he's on the island. I love Charley's and it's the best place on the island to get breakfast. The pancakes are huge and cover your whole plate. I love eating my pancakes with coconut syrup. They have a nice sized menu and the service is always great.

There is a nice ambiance to the set up. It has a log cabin feel to it with some of it's long tables and benches in the dining areas, wooden chairs that make room for you to lounge back and enjoy the morning paper with coffee.

I haven't been here for 2 years and can't wait to eat here once more.

I like Charleys for breakfast when I take visitors to Hana.  Food is typical breakfast, but I like the funkiness and the sassy waitresses. Bar is cool too.  Saw Willie Nelson one night at the bar and the bartender said he is a regular when on island.  OK with Willie OK with me.

Their pancakes are so huge that it covers your whole plate. They had made accommodations to do a Mickey Mouse shape pancake for the lil ones. Their fruits were so fresh and so yummy...especially the red papaya...my mouth waters just remembering it.

The atmosphere had a country feel to it with some of it's long tables and benches in the dining areas, wooden chairs (pillow padded, as I recall) that make room for you to lounge back and enjoy the morning paper with coffee.  The spring-loaded, screen door doesn't deter you from feeling like you should just "come on in."

They claim they have the best breakfast on the island, but it didn't earn that title assignment from me.  I'm more of a brunch person myself, but I would opt for other choices before Charley's for breakfast and/or brunch.

After a long day on our drive to and from Hana, we decided to eat at Charley's in Paia (based on a recommendation from a friend).  Though she recommended breakfast, since it was already 5:30pm, we ate the dinner menu.

Wife ordered the spicy shrimp scampi and I ordered something called the Okapakapaka(sp?) fish entree.  There was absolutely no "spice" to the shrimp scampi. It was basic linguini and shrimp, nothing special.  The Okapakapaka was a standard pan seared ahi with some sour creamy sauce and veggies.  Again, nothing special.

The decor of this places reminded me of some saloon in the middle of a small town.  There are pool tables and a bar in the back.  A few flat screen TVs adorn the walls.  It really didn't have any identity, was it a sports dive? old saloon? restaurant? IDK!?!?!  All i know was that the food was barely average.  The service OK.  I don't recommend this place unless you are really hungry after the Hana drive and you feel like some bland food.

General impression: Went there with my girlfriend for breakfast/brunch. It was barely okay. We were probably expecting a bit too much ("the best breakfast on the island"). That said, we were not impressed by the food or the service. Unfortunately we won't come back.

The place itself is like an old saloon and can seat a lot of people. Pretty, but not amazing.
Our waiter (Sue) was not the friendliest person. Not a smile, not even an eye contact even though the place was not crowded at all. Then again, if the rest of the experience had been good, I probably wouldn't even have had mentioned it here...

The food:
Ono (white fish) Benedicts Cajun Style with home made fries for me.
Veggie burrito for my girlfriend.
The serving size are ridiculous. The burrito could have been 3 times smaller and Eva would still probably wouldn't have been able to finish it. Then again, it was so bland that it definitely didn't help... Salt, pepper, Ketchup, and hot sauce didn't help either.
Instead of focusing on size, restaurants should focus on quality!
On a positive note, my eggs benedicts and my fries were pretty good, served on a bun (see the picture) but the fish was a bit on the dry side...

I really love their breakfast!!! You can never go wrong with their french toast special, blueberry pancake, or bacon and cheese omelet. The two main waitresses are super nice. I've never been here for lunch or dinner though.

I was so excited about eating breakfast at Charley's that I starved myself all the way from Hana to here and when we finally arrived we were seated at a table and waited for some one to take our order..... and waited......waited.. watched another table come in, get seated and order... waited some more.... and then left. I don't think anyone even noticed. Thanks for nothing Charley.

Not sure if they still serve them, but Charley's used to make these whole wheat pancakes that were so big they covered an entire dinner plate! Huevos Rancheros were also wonderful, reading the reviews it sounds like they have expanded their menu to include Mango French Toast and other goodies.
Located just off Hana Highway, just a short drive to Ho'okipa or Baldwin Beach, Charley's is perfect for breakfast on your way to the beach, or even on your way to Hana.
At night Charley's transforms and the back area, the Charley P. Woofer Saloon - complete with swinging Western Saloon doors, hosts live performances. Willie Nelson is often seen hanging out here.

Maybe 3.5 stars would be better than three - but that's only if you just consider breakfast.  Even though the food is a little shy of great, I like going to Charley's for Huevos Rancheros.  Their pancakes are so ridiculously enormous that I never even bother to order those because after a couple of bites I'm full.  They make good bloody mary's, the prices are reasonable.

The ambiance isn't so much my scene, it's not quite where I want to spend some time for evening drinks but it's definitely a good spot for breakfast if you're near Paia.  While it's pretty good, it's still just bar food and I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to have breakfast here.  If you're already close by it's worth it though.

Also, breakfast is about the only thing worth bothering with at Charley's.  The pizza sucks and the burgers are unremarkable.

i would have given this place a 3.5 star rating if i could.  it didnt quite make 4 stars but still worth a visit.

our shuttle driver told us about this place so we figured we'd try it since we got a local recommending it for its pancakes.

the pancakes were good but i think i like tasty crust's banana pancakes better.  i also ordered the fish benedict which was pretty good too.  they had all different kinds of benedicts.

if youre headed to hana or haleakala, its worth a stop.

Supposedly the best breakfast place on the island, but whoever was judging the award must just be lazy. The ono benedict was pretty good, but the pineapple on the french toast was canned and they don't have real maple syrup (I know Hawaii is about as far from Vermont as it gets, but you get the idea). Tacky decor to boot.

i'm rating this really at between 3 and 4 -- but a little closer to the 3-side.

they claim the best breakfast on maui but i'm not positive they live up to it.

i had an omelet with ham and cheddar and it was actually pretty good.  full of cheese and hearty chunks of hams, the omelet filled me up and i didn't even actually finish the whole thing.  the breakfast potatoes was just mediocre -- i felt like they were the kind you buy frozen at the grocery store instead of homemade and tasty like at kihei cafe.

my sig o had the biscuits and gravy which he absolutely loved.  it came with 2 eggs served your style and with bacon (or maybe you had a choice of meat -- i can't remember).  in fact, he liked breakfast so much he wanted to come back and try dinner.

we tried dinner at charley's another night and it was really a three star experience for me (i'd rate the breakfast as between 3 and 4 since i was only partly impressed with my food but josh loved his).  we both got burgers but they were well done even though the menu specified medium and josh specifically ordered his medium-rare.  the fries were not very crispy and pretty bland.

we ordered mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and they were good.  we ate all nine of them and actually vied for the last one.

service was decent.  staff was friendly but semi-slow -- nice for a leisurely lunch or breakfast.

Actually the previous person must be crazy because we totally love the breakfast here!! Each time we come here we wake up early to come get the breakfast here. Hubby usually gets the Ono Benedict and I usually have the yummy mac nut with coconut syrup French Toast. It's just delicious!! Yums!! The place looks like one of those places in the Western cowboy movies but the food is super good. It's a definite must try if you're ever in Maui! :)

A cool little place to grab breakfast in the town of Paia. Very convient to stop by on road to Hana or before/after biking Haleakala. That said, the town is also a nice mini destination in and of itself, with varied shops and art gallerys.  Breakfast itself was pretty average, and the place tends to get packed so they sit you down and churn you out.  Not exactly somewhere you linger, but hey they sell some pretty bad ass souvernir tshirts. Probably not something I'd wear, but they're fun to look at, and the mini cactuses and wildflowers at each table are neat.

I went to the bar for drinks & appetizers with a group of people in the afternoon. The fried calamari is perhaps one of the top kinds I've had since they're almost as big as onion ring size with the right amount of crispness & seasoning! Drinks such as beer are reasonably priced at $4.  One person had the fish (Ono) sandwich & he said it was really good. The bartender was pleasant. The decor has the "saloon" country feel with all these Willie Nelson photos. It appears that there were more of the locals drinking here vs tourists. This place has the biggest bar seating compared to other places in Paia during our venture for bar hopping.

I've been to this place twice and the service was awful both times!  The food is just ok.  I don't know if this was rated "best breakfast on the island, " but if you are looking for that, try going to Stella Blues in Kihei....in my opinion, that is the best.
