7.14.08 Update - CIA has made some improvements. No longer do you have to stand in an hour line to get your checked bags pre checked by Charleston's slowest employees. BIG PLUS.
Also, Terminal A now has a revamped bar and bagelry. Great news for my many 6a flights!
For these reasons I have up'ed my review from 2 to 3 stars. : )

It amazes me how inefficient this airport is. If you travel through here once or twice a year you… Read more »

I've had a really bad experience here with regard to the staff at this airport.  On one of my trips, my flight was delayed and we were forced to go back to the hotel to catch a flight out the following morning.  No big deal.  It happens.

So, we leave the gate and the staff says to go back to the baggage load area.  We walk back through and they tell  us to go back to the front desk and that the bags are gone.  It's just 10 yards away, but they also turn us away and tell us all the luggage will come down in the luggage carousel.  After waiting 15 minutes until the bags no longer are coming onto the carousel, we walk and stand in line at the customer service office.

Another 20 minutes go by and I finally get up to the desk to inquire about my luggage.  They promptly tell me that the luggage is lost  and they tell me that they will send it to my hotel (which we of course do not have rooms yet).    We call the hotel right there and lock down rooms and transfer the info to the help desk clerk.  As I am relaying this information,  the person from the check in desk (who sent us to the carousel in the first place) walks into the office.  She jumps on the phone and starts chatting with one of her friends.  During the course of this conversation, she mentions my last name.

At  this point in time, I'm beginning to lose my patience.  But the other clerk and I stop and look at each other.  She says to the other person,   "That's him right there!).  The person on the phone says "Your luggage is at the check in desk.".  I said, in most pissed off voice possible, "YOU were the one that just told me my luggage was down here an hour ago!".

To make matters worse, they claimed they could not find my work buddy's luggage.  So, as he rails on them, I storm off to where I came from to pick up my luggage.  As I get close to the check in counter, I see my luggage and my buddy's luggage right  next to each other.  They could tell I was upset and didn't even blink when I walked off with both sets.  I call on my cell phone and we meet up to get to the rental cars.

We jump in the car, backing out of the parking space, only  to hear this incredible scraping sound.  I climb out of the car and find the previous driver wrecked the undercarriage which is now resting on the ground.

After switching to a new car, we end our 4 hr escapade at the airport.

Normally flights will land in grubby pine forest North-Charleston, but sometimes you'll circle Charleston at a low altitude, which at sunset is beautiful.

We definitely had a good experience at this airport.  Small, and maybe disorganized at times, not when we arrived and departed.  On arrival, I got off the small which was too small for the gate; they quickly assisted me, offering me the electric lift and a wheelchair to get into the airport; I declined, but it was the thought that counted.  They knew sited guide and got me to the stairs with no problem.  We promptly found the carousel and our bags came out a few minutes later.  National Rental Car was right across the way; the woman was very courteous, explaining the terms of the car, asking if we3 wanted rental car insurance, asking if we had triple A and in my parents' case,, AARP to save us money which we saved I think $66.00.  She also gave us accurate directions to our hotel and asked her co-worker about gas prices sense she did not have the answer.  We then went out to the lot which was only footsteps away from the National kiosk; we promptly found our car with help from one of the attendence.

Departing was just as efficient; the US always desk had only two guys working it (taking care of tickets and checking in baggage.  So, they just told everyone who was waiting to us3e the self service kiosks, which we had a hard time with at first; but then got the hang of.  We even helped a woman who was a first timer print out her bording pass.  Before we knew it, we were in the US Airways terminal, waiting for our flight.  I should also mention that the screeners were excellent, knowing exactly how to handle visually impaired people, explaining the steps to me and guiding me through the scanner.  Even the gate agents were very nice, wishing us a good flight.  I just wish that there were more direct flights to Charleston.  Oh well.!  So, for an efficient, but not slow experience (hopefully on occasion,) Charleston International Airport cannot be beat.  Keep up the good work guys.!
