The tasting menu served mostly dry wines (white and red) but we did find a nice bottle of zin 2005 to take home with us!

The first time that I came here, I got to talk to the people there for a while, they told us all about the history of Charles Krug and how the founder had a falling out with his brother, Robert Mondavi. One of the people there goes to burningman and even got married there. She mentioned that she likes to trade little bracelets and gave my friend one. It was quite memorable...

The second time was...not so fun. I was there with someone who hadn't been before, and I asked the people there to talk about the history, they weren't exactly interested in that and didn't want to spend any time really talking about any of it. It was very off-putting and made me not want to go back.

[8/1/07] None of the wines really resonated with us, but a plus was that the atmosphere was not overly corporate.

Hands down one of my favorite wineries.  What they lack in presentation, they completely make up for in the quality of the wine.  This is the very first (though not last) wineries where I joined because I enjoy their wine that much.  We even came down from Seattle for one of their member events as well.

My two favorite wines here are Generations and Zinfandel Port.  There are others, but it gets expensive.

So what is there to say about this winery? Well, it's one of the oldest wineries in the valley.  Their tasting room is a bit on the spartan side.  Not much here but a bar and a small shop.  There's not much to see on the grounds either.  However, there are some patio tables outside so I recommend stopping by Dean & Deluca on your way here.  Pick up a bottle and have yourself a small picnic.

The overall experience here is just so-so.  But the staff is extremely friendly and like I said above, the wine is excellent!

Charles Krug Winery has one of the best wine club memberships in the B-Area. "What's you get" you ask? Well it's the usual regular shipment of libations and a discount for you and your posse when you go to their winery located across the street from the CIA (That'd be the Culinary Institute of American-Greystone - nothing to do with Langly, Porter Goss and  Robert Ludlum). In addition, they hold summer events on their "grounds." One gets to try wines of the past, present and future (still in the barrel). Yum!

Last time I went with the crew, it was a nice hot, sunny day Sonoma style. We were seated at a table with vittles. A magnum of 1978 Cab adorned the center. After the wine maker gave his spiel about wine club this and wine club that ..... in JarJar, "Me so happy you likey wine much so for me too you nicey me say." Anyway, that's what it sounded like after a couple of glasses. Then everything turned upside down. Big V decided he wanted to talk to a table of ladies, the only people within our age group. I knew it was going to be bad when he looked over and said, "Hello, it looks like ladies." He got up and disappeared. An hour or two and a bottle or two later.....no sign of BigV. It was getting about time to leave the party, exeunt stage left...."I thawt i thaw a puthy cat" time. No Big V in site. Then I see guy walking around calling out a woman's name at the same time I'm walking around calling for BigV. Then another woman comes up to me from the table, "Excuse me. Did your friend take off with my friend's sister (pointing to the man calling for his sister)?" Oh crap! I start calling for Big V. "Big V, Big V come out come out wherever your are. There's a man looking for his sister. AND WE'RE LEAVING RIGHT NOW!!"  There's some rustling from one end of the vineyard. A woman emerges from a row of vines fixing her hair. Big V comes out a second later. He looks at me with a big smile and says, "I'm going with them." He weaves back and forth. He's Odysseus and he's hearing the Sirens. I jump in, "Dude, you're in no shape for decision making and your coming with us." After some struggle we get Big V into the car. He passes out for an hour. We're getting closer to the city. Big V wakes up, looks side to side and asks, "Dude, are you okay to drive?" Price of gas to get to wine club: $50, the price of wine club: $120 per annum for shipments of libations, the price of averting a near death experience for Big V: priceless. For everything else there's the Discover Card.

3 duckets to Charles Krug's great events and wine club. 1 ducket for the magnum of '78. An extra ducket for Big V's love of nature.
