Review from Daniel S.
Fullerton, CA
When writing a review, it is very tempting to write only about the final product. However I believe that a review, especially in the case of reviewing practitioners and service providers, should encompass not only the end result but also the method and practice by which the end result was achieved.
With that stated, Dr. Chao and his staff were more than I could have ever hoped for in a health care provision center. I have worked as a health care staff manger and have worked with countless health care providers and administrators, and still I can hold to my earlier statement with confidence and without any reservation. His entire staff is the kindest, personable, and the most knowledgeable medical staff that I had ever encountered. Dr. Chao never rushed through our appointments and spent much time conversing to get to know me better as a person (not just a patient). Throughout our conversations, he asked me about my lifestyle and why I wanted to receive corrective surgery for my eyes. At the end, he gave me a very honest opinion as to what the best possible solution may be to include postponing or even canceling the entire procedure and explained in clear detail what the benefits and downsides were to each option. He also thoroughly explained all of the various types of corrective surgeries that are available, provided a recommendation, and explained the reasons for his recommendation for me. Once I made a well informed and thought out decision, he and his staff walked me thought the entire process of the selected surgery. Throughout the surgery, Dr. Chao talked me though every step of the process as he was performing the surgery. I never felt disconnected or felt like I was just another paycheck to be collected. I knew everything that was going from start to finish because Dr. Chao and his staff communicated with me every step of the way. I felt like I could perform the surgery myself after the surgery! Furthermore, the end result could not have been any better. Two and a half months have now passed and my vision is at 20/20 and still improving! Nothing caught me off guard since Dr. Chao had warned me about the discomfort and blurry vision immediately following the procedure. I was wearing neg 3.75 contact lenses before and now I am completely free of glasses and contacts. I do not have any problem seeing at night, see halos, or have hyper-sensitivity towards light. The end result, just like the overall customer service and professionalism of the staff, is nothing short of perfection. -

I am writing four days after having LASIK with Dr. Chao. I am very pleased with not just the results but the entire process and staff at the Chao vision institute. I was extremely nervous about having LASIK but Dr. Chao and his staff were amazing. They made me feel very comfortable the whole time from the first pre-op visit all the way to the post-op visits.
Dr. Chao could tell I was nervous about the surgery, so he took his time with me to explain every detail about my eyes and what to expect in surgery and after the surgery. Dr. Chao took the time to get to know me and it was clear that he really cared about my well being and did everything he could to make me feel at ease about the whole process.
The surgery itself was much easier than I expected. It was all over in about 10 minutes and did not hurt at all. It did feel a little weird and uncomfortable, but because Dr Chao explained exactly what would happen I knew what to expect and it wasnt bad at all.
After the surgery I took a two hour nap, and when I woke up I was shocked that I could already see sooo much better than before. The next day it was even better, and when I went in for my post-op I was actually seeing 20/15. There was only very minor discomfort in my eyes the first two days after the procedure. Overall I could not be happier about my results and the overall experience at Chao vision institute and would recommend Dr. Chao to anyone considering having LASIK.Comment from Lawrence C. My eyes are my life; as a mother, wife & programmer. I had resolved myself to glasses & poor vision. Researching LASIK, doctors & options was exhausting. I was afraid to select a doctor & not sure of the procedure that is best for me. But then I meet Dr. Chao & his staff; all of those fears disappeared. He walked me thru the entire process; from the selection of the type of procedure, the actual procedure, follow up care & future planning. I never felt misinformed or was receiving poor quality of service.
His office, staff & Dr. Chao himself are all the best in class for LASIK & eye procedures. I always felt welcomed, educated, empowered & part of "the family". I would highly recommend Chao Vision Institute to anyone considering LASIK. If asked to have LASIK again I would only choose Chao Vision Institute. -

In the advent of groupons and livingsocials, it has been tempting I'm sure to purchase discounted services. When it comes to my vision, however, no expense shall be spared. My search for a good place to get the LASIK procedure has taken a longer route. Skepticism towards new technology at the expense of my sight has held me back for years. Even then, my decision to finally succumb to recent trend was not done overnight. I have asked friends with previous experience with a specialist and I've done plenty of reading on what makes a good place and individual to entrust my eyes. After reading up on many specialists around the area, mainly through yelp and phoning their offices for my queries, my instinct has always led me back to Dr. Chao at Chao Vision Institute.
Prior to meeting Dr. Chao, I phoned various offices to make appointments for consultation. It turned out, Dr. Chao is one of the few ones who would see you for an initial consultation himself. Most offices would have an associate or their technicians meet with you and most likely meet the presiding doctor (the one who will actually do the laser procedure) on the actual day of the procedure. Dr. Chao not only did the initial consultation with me, but he also does (I'm still due to see him in a week for another post-op check) all the following appointments after that. On the eve of the actual surgery, I received a phone call from the doctor himself to check on me, even when he knows that he will be seeing me the following morning for a post op check-up. Dr. Chao gave me his mobile phone and his permission to phone him even in the most ungodly hours if I had any concerns. Now that's a doctor who truly cares.
Some might think that he could only do what he does because he's not experienced enough and that he needs more clients. Not so. He has years of experience (just check his credentials) and he is a very busy man (just check his schedule). Dr. Chao has a gift of making his patients feel like they are the only patients he has. In explaining the complicated and technical terms of ophthalmology, he describes them with maternal tone yet exuberant and confident voice. I was finally at ease when I realized that my vision would be in the hands of a very capable, trustworthy and caring man.
The rapport in the office exudes camaraderie. You can see/feel by the way each one speaks and deals with each other that they like what they do and for/with whom they work. As a result, I feel truly comfortable and cared for by each of the individuals poking around my eyes.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend Dr. Chao to do your LASIK if you're thinking of having one. You wouldn't regret it. -

I got lasiks over 6 months ago and couldn't be happier with my 20/20 vision.
As a physician, I can tell you I got the best care that anyone could get. I would recommend Dr. Chao to my family and my patients.
Before I decided to choose Dr. Chao to do my corrective eye surgery, I shopped around and got many consults, and though there are many well qualified surgeons in this area, and many that offered a lower price, I felt most comfortable with Dr. Chao because of his impressive background and wonderful bedside manner. With Dr. Chao, I trusted that my surgery would go well, and if for some reason it didn't, Dr. Chao had the experience and expertise to manage it.
My experience with the whole process could not have been better. Simply put, they treated me like family (and just from sitting in the waiting room, its obvious that they treat everyone like family). -

While there are many outstanding ophthalmologists in Orange County and specifically Irvine, I chose Dr. Chao to surgeon and I highly recommend him to anyone thinking about getting corrective eye surgery. He is very professional and came highly recommended to me, so that's why I put him at the top of my short list of potential surgeons. I've had many family members and friends use Dr. Chao for LASIK and only heard rave reviews. When I first went in to meet him, I was immediately impressed with his facilities and staff when I entered the office. After a few minute wait, I was taken back for the checkup. Everything was clean and of highest quality. Dr. Chao is very friendly and professional, not to mention exceptional at his practice. He put all my fears at rest and made me feel very comfortable with him and his procedures.
My actual surgery went very well and was over after a few moments. The checkups post-ops were quick and easy. I had my surgery done over four years ago and to this day I still have ~20/15 vision. I can honestly say that I think Dr. Chao is the best ophthalmologist in the county. If anyone is thinking about getting a new eye doctor or wants LASIK, go talk to Dr. Chao and see if he is the right fit for you. You won't regret speaking with him and if you do choose to use his services, you will have made the right choice. -

I recently had my eye corrective surgery done with Dr. Chao and I am SOOO glad that I chose him to do the surgery!
I had done alot of research prior to choosing my surgeon and went to several places to get consultations to see how each facility and surgeon was. One of the surgeons I had gone to felt like a waste of my time. He was super arrogant and didn't really answer any of my questions. This surgeon didn't even have own his Lasers..he rents them from one of the other more reputable surgery centers! And given his newer practice, he was still charging as much as the really experienced surgeons! As for the next surgeon, he was well known and has lots of experience, probably one of the most famous LASIK centers in Orange County! I didn't go with him because I wasn't able to speak to the surgeon about my concerns and it felt very much like a pressured sales pitch, (they were giving me a "discount" if I acted within that month!).
As for Dr. Chao, as soon as I spoke with him, I knew that I had meet the man who was going to let me see the world clearly again! His office staff is absolutely wonderful. I was able to arrange for a consultation quickly and with no pressure to have my surgery done right away or they would raise the price on me! Dr. Chao went over all the measurements with me and really give me his full attention in discussing what options I had and answered all my questions and concerns. In my initial consultation, we had decided that I might consider PRK since one of my cornea's was on the thinner side, but at the pre-op examination, he remeasured everything again and assured me that I would be able to do LASIK given my low correction. We decided together that I would do PRK given I had a previous corneal injury and it was still giving me problems.
Dr. Chao does his surgeries on Fridays then schedules your post-op appointment for Saturday. If you're having LASIK done, then most of the time, you will be able to go back to work on Monday only needing to take off Friday. Dr. Chao works by himself on Saturday as he goes thru his post-op patients. It was great that I didn't have to buy any of the eye drops because he provided ALL my eye drops which would have cost several hundred dollars! My follow-up exams have all been with Dr. Chao and those are all included in the price of the surgery. Dr. Chao gave me his cell phone number to call in case of any emergencies and even scolded me for not calling him when my eyes got really dry when I went back to work, even though I had a follow-up appointment with him the following day. Another plus for me was that Dr. Chao's practice isn't limited to LASIK/PRK. He does all sorts of other eye surgeries like caratact surgeries and lens replacements, so you know that he has experience should anything go wrong.
Price really wasn't a factor for me since these are my eyes! I wanted an experienced surgeon who would be able to deal with any complications and able to put my fears at ease. Dr. Chao really cares for his patients and it's really evident when you see him with his patients.
Chose Dr. Chao, you'll only regret that you didn't do it sooner! -

Dr. Chao is absolutely fantastic at what he does. I got the PRK surgery done by Dr. Chao and his staff almost 1 year ago and they were absolutely fantastic from day one. What is great about Dr. Chao is he really oversees every single step of the process himself. Dr. Chao is there for every step of the pre-screening process, the operation, and post-operation. He takes his time in explaining to his patients in detail of what is going on and really does an awesome job at making you feel comfortable. His staff is also very friendly, motivated, and also well trained.
For anyone wanting to get LASIX, PRK, or any type of Cataract surgery done, I would recommend Dr. Chao in a heartbeat. The guy really does an amazing job.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I am writing this review only 3 days after receiving LASIK with Dr. Chao.
I have been wanting LASIK for years and after saving for a while, I began my search to find the right doctor for me.
Surprisingly I didn't search Yelp at all, I just google searched "best LASIK surgeons in Orange County" and found about 4 doctors that came right up. After viewing their website, I came across Dr, Chao. Right away I was impressed at the layout and the professional appearance of his office, and without even looking up his background I called to make a consultation appointment. I assumed being in Irvine, and having such a nice office, that he would be well established.
I arrived on a Saturday only to find Dr. Chao working solo in his office. Right away this impressed me, that even on a Saturday he is working and alone to boot. He introduced himself right away and gave me and my friend a tour of the facility. He showed us every instrument that would be used from the eye exam all the way through Post's. He explained how everything worked and wanted make sure I understood as well.
He told me point blank that not everyone is eligible for LASIK, and he typically denies 15%-17% of patients, because they would not be good candidates for LASIK, and would not get the results they would want from it. As soon I heard this, I knew right away that this was my doctor and I didn't need to search any other facility. A man who solely cares about the well being of the patient and not about the money, there needs to be more doctors like him. He even cracked some jokes in there as well.
The other technicians that worked there were amazing. I wish I could remember the female employees name who mainly helped me while waiting for Dr.Chao, she was amazing. She was always bright and smiling and actually had a conversation with me. Normally I'm the type of person who hates small talk, but it really felt like whoever was in contact with me really wanted to know about me, which made me feel more than another customer that comes through the door.
The surgery went amazing. Dr. Chao even gave me his personal home number if I needed anything after my surgery.I had a -3.00 in both eyes, and 24 hours latter I have 20/20 vision. I couldn't be happier. I have been wearing contacts for 7 years, and cannot express the joy of being able to wake up in the morning and be able to just see.
I would recommend anyone to visit Dr. Chao first if he/she is considering LASIK or any other type of eye surgery.

Update
just got back from my 3 month checkup. I'm seeing better than 20/20, awesome.
I can't express in words how grateful I am to find Dr. Chao, and to have him as my eye doctor.
I can't stress anyone enough, if you need or are considering Lasik surgery, Go see Chao, Go see Chao, Go see Chao (old Cal Worthington commercials)
But seriously
Dr. Chao = Best. Doctor. Ever.

Dr. Chao and his staff are AMAZING!!! Well worth the drive from Los Angeles to have a doctor that treats you like an individual patient, not just money in his bank account.. He truly cares about each and every single patient....he even remembered that I'm a huge Ohio State football fan.
Unlike other places I'd been to, where my consultation was done by technicians & I felt like I was being moved along an assembly line, Dr. Chao did my pre-op consultation. He personally answered all my questions and even provided me with his email address if I had any other questions after leaving the office.
My surgery was also an all-inclusive price which included all the medications and drops that I needed, post-op visits and (not that I think I'll be needing it) any fine tuning of my laser correction for a year after my surgery.
The day of my procedure, he talked me through everything and kept me fully aware of what was going on. He also gave me a 24-hr number that I could reach him for ANYTHING. My first day after surgery I was almost at 20/20 vision (I had a -5.75 prescription with astigmatism before surgery).
Now, I'm about a month post-op and I'm loving life without contacts or glasses. My situation had gotten so bad that I couldn't wear contacts or even makeup & it was hurting my career in the entertainment/modeling business. Dr. Chao not only gave me great corrected eyesight, he also gave me back my career. (a week post-op, I booked a television episode!)
edited to add: just started playing tennis again & WOW!!! I see the ball so well. I think I'm seeing the ball better than before surgery w/ contacts. -

I'd been wanting LASIK for a long time but had been waiting for my eyes to be stable for 5 years and for the technology to mature. So in 2009 I decided that 2010 would be the year I got it done, first thing I did was go to a doctor I hear about every 3 seconds on the radio who claims to have done something like 4944595930304593 eyes, which may actually be the case as the place was a mill. I think I saw the doctor for about 1 minute at the very end when he asked if I wanted to have the sugary "right now". Huh? First off I told them I had only been out of contacts for 2 days, way less than recommended and additionally that I was doing a consult to ensure I was a candidate before maxing out my FSA in open enrollment (if you have FSAs available I would highly recommend this, it spreads the costs out over the year and its pre-tax dollars) and wanted to have the operation sometime early 2010, unfazed by the fact I had my contacts in only two days ago they offered to print me duplicate receipt for Jan1, this was about when I left. But I did learn I was a good candidate so my search continued, I spent about 6 months looking at doctors and reading reviews here and elsewhere and was impressed by Dr Chao's reviews so went for a consult. I was very impressed, he actually did spend time with me, explained everything in detail, did much of the eye exam himself (outside the machine stare at the balloon or dot tests) it was far more comfortable than the "eye-mill" I went to the previous year. On the day of surgery I was very nervous and Dr Chao and his staff were great in keeping me calm (though I'm not sure if their nurf football will ever be the same) and my results have been fantastic.
My contacts used to be -4.75/-5 now I see perfectly with no glasses or contacts, my night vision is actually better than before as I had an astigmatism which the procedure seems to have corrected as well as I no longer have star bursts around lights at night. I would highly recommend anyone looking at LASIK to see Dr Chao -

Dr. Chao is one of the nicest doctors i've ever had the pleasure of working with. I had my surgery with another doctor, and a flap complication arose the day after, and the other doctor was away, and he called Dr. Chao to take a look at it and he fixed it right then and there, even though I wasn't his patient.
Extremely professional, but also nice and seems to really care about the patient, I would not hesitate to choose Dr. Chao for any surgery there is.
A real class act. -

New York, NY
Dr. Chao took the time and care to walk me through every step of the custom LASIK operation so that there were no surprises for me to experience. I was able to attend my college lecture and lab the very next morning (after an early morning post-op exam). The post-op appointments, pre-op appointments, and medication/eye drops are included in the price of the operation. The availability of appointment days and times is relatively flexible within reason, so you shouldn't have any issues with scheduling. If I recall correctly, I started with a prescription of -7.75 in one eye, and -6.5 in the other. I used to feel like I was virtually blind as a bat, but now my vision is -0.25 in both eyes (smallest possible prescription above perfect vision). I strongly recommend Dr. Chao to anyone who wants to say goodbye to their glasses and/or contact lenses.
Edit: It has now been 3 months since the operation and I'd like to report that everything is going well. I'm enjoying the new-found freedom that comes with being rid of corrective lenses. I would like to reiterate that I am very satisfied with Chao Vision Institute, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in getting rid of their glasses/contacts. -

Having had Lasik done about 13 years ago on both eyes, my left eye was not 20/20 anymore. I did my research of eye doctors from Los Angeles down to San Diego to see who could correct it. I felt like most of the doctors wanted to take my money and just do the Lasik procedure again. Dr. Chao actually recommended that I shouldn't do the procedure unless I was going into Law Enforcement. Well in my circumstance, I was going into Law Enforcement to be a reserve officer while maintaining my real estate career. Under my circumstances, Dr. Chao gave me the option to do a laser procedure on my left eye. In this case, he recommend PRK instead of Lasik. Although the healing time for PRK is longer, due to my previous surgery, it was the safer way to go in my situation.
Dr. Chao actually does everything from pre to post op. I highly recommend him and his staff to anyone considering any eye surgery.
Everytime I go back for a check up, I am treated as a friend and have the best service.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Last month, I decided to get Lasik so I could function without glasses. After an in-depth series of tests, I was considered a candidate for Lasik. Dr. Chao ensured me that I would get an excellent result from Lasik. I scheduled the procedure a week later. The procedure was painless and took a matter of minutes for each eye (the laser takes only seconds) without any stress. I had custom-wavefront Lasik which means the laser is tailored to account for the uniqueness of an individual's eye.
The next day I was amazed by the huge visual improvement and that I could actually walk around, much less drive, without glasses. By month's end, my vision improved to 20/20 from 20/40 a week post-Lasik. I had a fantastic outcome. The staff is amazing and the post-operative care (ease of mind post-Lasik is more important than you'll anticipate) is thorough and attentive. Great experience and no regrets. -

Was delighted with the service and attention that Dr. Chao and his staff provided before during and after my LASIK surgery at his office. They were personable, attentive and patient enough to answer all my questions. The staff and the feel of the office in general helped to ensure I felt comfortable during all of my appointments.
I also found Dr. Chao's office to be extremely flexible and accomodating. A few weeks after my surgery I was scheduled for international travel and had been having some scratchiness in one of my eyes and they were able to fit me in on a Friday when they were not even officially in the office to make sure I would be OK for my trip.
I would highly recommend Dr. Chao to anyone considering LASIK! -

I would recommend Dr. Chao to EVERYONE and ANYONE who is interested in Lasiks surgery.
What I loved most about my Lasiks experience is that Dr. Chao really cares about you as a patient. Your visits with him are never rushed, he treats you as an individual, and really keeps your best interest at heart.
Going into my procedure, I wasn't the least bit nervous because I knew Dr. Chao was focused on me, and not rushing onto the next patient. The Chao Vision Inst actually only does 3 Lasiks procedures a day, which you will not find at other Lasiks Institutes. Until you are comfortable, and your questions are answered, Dr. Chao will sit with you after your procedure to make sure you are well enough to go home.
Dr. Chao's bedside manner is really awesome, which you don't get from many doctor's these days.
When dealing with your eyes, you want to feel safe and comfortable. Dr. Chao will give you that security.
During my follow-up visit the day after my surgery, I was brought to tears when I could read all the letters on the screen. I am still amazed how one surgery and one doctor can take me from having horrible vision, to being 20/20 the next day. -

I had my vision fixed with PRK about 6 months ago. Dr. Chao was attentive and super careful. I went to 4 other consults and with the exception of one other practice everyone else was ready to sign me up for Lasik that day! Dr. Chao however, advised me that due to my cornea shape PRK was much safer. He brought me back several times to take measurements and to ensure that my procedure would be safe. He takes the adage "measure twice, cut once" to heart! After my surgery I had a lot of discomfort and he he saw me as a walk in. Now that's what I call service. My vision is perfect now and it was all worth it. I would advise anyone to go to the Chao vision institute because he does excellent work and doesn't treat you like a cash cow.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Dr. Chao. After decades of wearing contacts, I decided it was finally time to get Lasik. I researched doctors and asked some people in the optical field for recommendations. I made appts and checked out two doctors, Dr. Chao being one of them. The first dr I visited....it was a total assembly line (even though it was a highly recommended and well know doc). I barely even saw the Dr before they were ready to schedule my surgery. I then had my appt with Dr. Chao, and I am so glad I did! I had been wearing gas perm lenses for 25+ years, so mine was a complicated case...I couldn't just stop wearing my contacts (like some soft lens wearers can). I had to stop wearing my contacts and then keep coming back every two weeks to get my vision checked until my eyes stabilized. Dr Chao and his office staff are very patient and perfectionistic.....it took 3 months to get my eyes to the point where it was safe to perform Lasik. Dr. Chao wanted to make sure my eyes were absolutely 100% ready for the procedure. (I get the impression the other doc would have scheduled it much much sooner based on my first appt there). Dr. Chao could have done it earlier and risked my outcome, but he believes in being safe and perfect before doing surgery on my eyes. After many months of waiting (and wearing my glasses - ugh), the day finally came for surgery! I was nervous and a little freaked out b/c after all, they are doing stuff to your eyes. His staff (and Dr Chao) were sooooo nice. Never did I feel bad for being so nervous. They totally went at the right pace and made sure not to move too quickly and freak me out. The procedure went well and by the next day, I was totally seeing all by myself with my new eyes! I was even able to drive myself to the post ops appt on Sat. I've been back several times (by the way, all of these appts, even the pre-op ones where I had to come many, many more times than most people were all covered under one fee. no extra fees or charges) and my eyes are doing great. (My surgery was almost 6 months ago - May 2010). I very much recommend Dr Chao and thought he was great and my surgery outcome was excellent.

I chose Dr. Chao after he performed surgeries on my two other family members. He and his staff are very pleasant and made me feel at ease. Dr. Chao performed an in-depth tests before the Lasik surgery and explained every procedure. The LASIK itself was painless and Dr. Chao throughout the surgery made sure I was at ease. I'm very happy with the results. It has been a month and half since the surgery and I can see 20/20. My night vision is as clear as I when I wore my contacts. Thank you Dr. Chao, you are the best!
