11 reviews for Champignon on Madison
The store is cluttered. The service is piss poor. The paninis are blah at best.
I'll still give it 2.5 stars because I like that I can get a cupcake and panini at 7 AM on a Monday. I like to eat my feelings during my first work week, ok?
This is a fun, little, trendy place where the workers are all super nice and will give you free stuff every once in a while if you're a regular. Because I spend most of my waking hours at the Mount Sinai Hospital, I get down here pretty often, so I've made the Chicken Fajita panini one of my oft-ordered meals. Although the place is a little overpriced, it's still a classy little joint with good food and fantastic pastries.
They must have done something to change the quality of the coffee here, because the reviews from a year ago really lay into the quality of the coffee, but as of right now, I have to absolutely disagree. Being a bit of a coffee snob myself (I brew my own freshly ground coffee every morning during the week), I've had my share of coffee around this neighborhood, and Champignon definitely offers the best brew on Madison around the hospital. They'll make the coffee exactly as you want it, and you can tell it's been freshly made and not roasted to the point of charcoal (::cough:: Starbucks ::cough::).
If you're looking for a quick little lunch or early dinner break with small but tasty portions, and delicious desserts, swing by and check it out. Be prepared to spend a little too much, but hey, it's Manhattan, right?
this is my morning routine cup of coffee! the coffee is awesome, if u like your coffee super hot , or planning to drink it later..... this place makes it on a room warm-cooler side! the red-velvet cheese cake is pretty good!
My friend took us here since we met up with her at Central Park and this is just around the corner from her apartment. I liked that it was a humble, unpretentious shop where we could have a quick, quiet meal. I ordered the 1389 which was a panini with a breaded chicken cutlet, black forest ham and provolone. I have no idea where the name comes from, but the sandwich was tasty.
My boyfriend ordered the New England clam chowder which was a little on the thin side for me, but hit the spot.
The service was a bit on the slow side, but if in the neighborhood and in need of a quick bite to eat, I'd come here again.
I think this is the best little cafe in the area. The coffee is not very good (ironic no?) but everything else is.
Had a lovely tomato, mozzarella, basil with oil and vinegar on artisan bread. Fun tasty baked goods. Nice looking salads and other snack items.
No wifi and annoying light rock radio spoiled the mood a bit.
Champignon's been here for a while, so in some ways I'm surprised to be the first to review it, but in some ways, I'm not all that surprised. The area around Mount Sinai is teeming with coffee/pastry/soup/panini places, and they all kind of suck, so why would anyone take the time to distinguish one over the others? Well, out of all of them, Champignon probably sucks the least, PLUS I get another first, so here we go:
The coffee is pretty terrible, but if you like terrible coffee (and most people do), you'd do well to go here because you can get a little punch card and earn yourself a free terrible coffee every time you buy 10 terrible coffees.
On the plus side, their muffins are really freakin' good! I wish they had a punch card for muffins, because I'd have about...well, I'd have a lot of free muffins. They're made with yogurt and hence are "low-fat", but I'm not really sure I believe that. At any rate, they're incredibly moist and soft, which is how muffins should be. Best by far is the lemon poppy, followed by cinnamon.
I haven't tried the soups or sandwiches yet, but they look fairly tasty and fresh, although not all that different from those at the other sucky soup/panini places in the nabe. The people who work there seem to have their act together, as I don't usually have to wait too long in the morning to pay for my delicious quasi-low-fat muffin.
Too crowded. Too expensive.
I was also less than thrilled to find a dead insect in my salad.
Not going back any time soon.
I agree w/ the original poster that the area is teeming with coffee/ pastry/ soup/ panini places, and they all kind of suck. After working at Mount Sinai for over 3 years I've whittled my lunch circuit down quite a bit. Although it's been here for quite awhile, I only went to Champignon for the first time this past March. Everything I've tried is delicious (except the coffee, which DOES suck!!). I've only ever gone for lunch so I can't say much about breakfast. Everything is on display and looks very tempting. The staff is extremely friendly and while it's probably a bit overpriced, it's definitely worth it to treat yourself once in awhile.
Warning: ladies, don't go w/ a sweet tooth! I made that mistake and walked out with a Mississippi Mud Pie which is a cross between a brownie and a block of chocolate fudge. So insanely good though!
It is a bit chaotic getting served at the crowded counter, but IF you can get a proper seat it's an oasis in the hood. Too bad outdoor seating isn't possible in this unpleasant stretch of Madison.
It's a quaint little cafe that I like to bring a friend to for one-on-one intimate conversations. I love their beautiful, colorful display of mini cakes, and I'd like to try them all one day. Their tiramisu was the best out of the ones I've already tried so far. Are they worth 5 dollars? Maybe not. But their staff is pretty friendly and the window seats make it feel like a real New York cafe.
As Becca S. points out, the city, and this neighborhood in particular are filled with these gourmet cafe types of places. I feel like it is the kind of place my work would cater from and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, I cannot help but see the irony in a place that strives for gourmet and results in generic. The service was very friendly overall and my tuna wrap was small, but delicious. I would venture back if I needed something healthy.
