Bakersfield, CA
I'm going to start off by saying I didn't used to like this place much, however the last 3 visits I've had have been amazing.
Setup - The same as everywhere else.
Main dishes - This is what sets it apart.
I've had the prime rib when it was on special, and it did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked, tender, and delicious.
I've had the stuffed shrimp twice. AMAZING, I'm craving them as I type this. That's how good they are. If you haven't tried it lately, I would go and give it a second chance with no expectations.
It's not usually packed like the other places, so you can walk in without having to wait for an extended period of time, which is also a plus.Listed in: Places I LOVE

It was my first time here and one of just a couple times having basque food. We all enjoyed the food and I thought the atmosphere was cool and rustic. You get a ton of food(of course it's basque). I enjoyed all the set up stuff. the tongue, soup, and bread were the best parts. I ordered beef Bourguignon which I've never had before and loved it. I tried my friends braised lamb which was great too. I thought the booth they gave us was a little small for 3 of us and all the food they bring out, you have to do a lot of shuffling. I say make sure you're hungry if you come here or the price will not be worth it.

This is a French Basque place, not Spanish. I was really confused for a while when I walked into here. The paintings and decorations on the wall...the leather booths...the place is a bit of "old folks-dinner-night out" kind of place...."we've been coming here for 30 years"--kind of place...a dingy kind of place giving the impression that smoking went on here for 29 years and probably some family business as well.
So before the food came, I'm already mentally grading the place as a 1 star. Expecting the food to match the atmosphere.
Well, the food came and if you're European and missing grandmom's home cooked meals....well, you will find them here.
Not just "so much like mom's home cooked meal" but the REAL THING. I wanted to peak behind the curtain to see if my parents were hiding back there.
Now, if you've never had traditional home cooked Eurpoean meals, you might find this place a bit odd. Probably, really odd. Honestly, none of the food had the taste of restaurant food.
First, they bring out a bowl of awesome, soft bread with warm salsa (7.5 spicy level on a 1-10 scale) for dipping or spreading onto your bread.
Next you get a big bowl of cabbage and veggie soup to pour with a ladle onto everyone's plate. DELICIOUS. I ate the whole bowl. (This is when I looked behind the curtains to see if one of my parents were there in their aprons).
Next comes a bowl of lettuce, a plate of tomatoes, and a plate of tongues. All seasoned individually and wow, the spices...delectable.
SO all that comes standard with each meal.
Then your main meal (whatever you ordered). I had the stuffed cream cheese shrimp covered with melted cheese...yum. Fattening...but yum.
After eating everything before my main meal came out...I was so stuffed I only had one shrimp. But they were great leftovers for breakfast the next day.
They have a full bar and about 4 or 5 house wines....for a glass, it was $4 and quite balanced for house wine.
Really, a good place for a home cooked meal.
My last meal in BAKO. -

We had a wonder experience also last Dec. Were returning for lunch next week on the way to Yosemite.
Our first experience was really interesting as we tried several dishes, because we had 4 people. This time we know what to do and we will follow the Server's lead and do it all over again. Very good food and definitely worth a visit. -

Aaron P. and I must be on a different planet. I hated this restaurant. For one thing it's decrepit and worn out. Old paneling on the walls, plastic flowers, grimy carpets, old red vinyl covered chairs - but not in a good way. I hated that shrimp dish and my lamb was dry and tasteless. I read on another website that this restaurant has been sold to someone who is not Basque. Don't even bother - there's plenty of other choices in Basque. Google "best basque restaurants, bakersfield" and you'll get the good ones.

This place is great. The vegetables are always incredibly fresh and delicious and the side dishes are all great. Full disclosure: I am not into tongue and so I cannot speak for the tongue dish. All the dishes I have had are great, and I would recommend this to anyone on the basis of the food.
If you are looking for a sleek, hip place, this isn't it, however. It does cater to an older crowd and families, but for my money, this is the best Basque food in California. But it's not pretentious. -

I guess if it's your first time trying "Basque" food, you might be impressed. French or Spanish, Bakersfield has other choices at better prices and with better flavor.
The food was just OK, but seemed over-priced. I didn't like sitting in the uncomfortable and greasy booths, using the tin-foil like silver ware, and having to suffer the obnoxious waitress/bartender lady. She was spilling sauces and water all over us/our table, just real sloppy and ill-composed.
She let us know it wasn't her fault, the new owner is just too cheap to hire help, clean the place up, do anything with it
Great, that's just what I want to hear when I'm paying $20 for fried chicken... Damnit, did I just pay that much for such a mundane dish?
Anyway, the food was greasy, the seats were greasy, the menu was greasy, the waitress was greasy, the cook was greasy..
Was it authentic? Sure. Maybe too much.
Next time, I'll just stay in the bar and drink. The patio might be nice for a party, if they don't mind me catering in some Taco Bell or KFC.. -

I went here with my grandmother, and while the food wasn't terrible, it definitely matched the feel of the place, which is to say bland, & suitable for an older generation, not particularly desirous of much flavor. The soup with beans & salsa had a bit of flavor, but that may have been more from the salsa than the soup itself. The main entree I ordered was the lamb, & my grandmother the ortega burger. The lamb was slathered in a brownish gravy, and not the most tender I've ever ordered. My grandmothers burger was not entirely cooked, the fries that came with it were cold, the burger patty was covered in little orange things which I can only assume were chopped carrots, and despite being an ortega burger, and topped with a chili, it was still exceedingly bland. Maybe dinner at this restaurant is a better quality of food, I personally will not go back here again.
