Seattle probably has an equal number of coffee shops and Thai eateries. Lately, I've had a number of average to good Thai meals from various restaurants. On a recommendation from a friend, we tried out Chaiyo and I'm happy to report that our take out was GREAT!
One of my pet peeves is bad/ketchup based Pad Thai. Chaiyo's Pad Thai was the best I've had since my favorite joint on lower Queen Anne closed year's ago (I think it was called Thai Restaurant and it was across the street from Jaliscos).
My wife and I also enjoyed the Pad Ke Mao and the basil chicken. We're fans of Chaiyo and will be back soon!
I always ordered either Pineapple fried rice or Spicy seafood fried rice. DELICIOUS! Maybe I'm wrong but I remembered the two used to taste different than the other, but the last time I ordered these two with my bf, both fried rices tasted the same only contain different ingredients.
But the foods are delicious, and the price is worth it! Sometimes parking is a little hard because it's street parking. I ended up parking in the parking space for the shops across the street. Everytime I park there I only order a take out for fear my car will get towed.
Went here for lunch. Good lunch special. Quick and attentive service. Fried rice was good. I also liked their iced coffee. Hopefully they can do a lunch buffet someday.
Good for: quiet lunch near Northgate area
This place is pretty yummy and i'm not sure what else I really expect from them. The atmosphere is nice. It's actually never busy, so expect it to be pretty serene. The decor is dark and it's dimly lit. The menu has everything you'd expect to see and it's fairly priced. The dinner portions are huge!! If you come for lunch they have specials too. My only complaint is that the service isn't that great..it's obviously a family owned place so there are always people milling about chatting with each other. So it kind of sucked to wait 20 min for them to give us the bill even with a credit card sticking off the table..then when they come by they leave the bill and don't take the card, making you wait forever again...finally i just asked my boyfriend to walk up to the 4 or 5 family members behind the register so they could ring us up. Annoying! Other than that, the panang curry, noodles, and bbq meats are pretty tasty and they make for good leftovers too!
while i'm being very picky about the taste of the food. I think the best food in chaiyo, or at least the ones that i always order that i think are better than any other thai restaurants are their fried rice (any kind) and their pla prik khing (hot sauce on deep fried trout). they taste heavenly. so far i can't find anything that can beat their fried rice and pla prik khing. and trust me, i have eaten lots of thai food.
Finally found a Thai restaurant that'll deliver to my neighborhood. Ordered pad thai, cashew chicken, and pineapple fried rice. Good, good, and OMG. the rice was loaded with chicken and large chunks of pineapple, and wasn't greasy at all. you know how you can see the oil glistening on the grains in some fried rice dishes? well, this isn't one of them. it was flavorful and aromatic, and almost made me forget about the other dishes we ordered. speaking of which, the pad thai was pretty good, but could've used more fresh veggies. also, the next day when I had the leftovers for breakfast, the noodles had turned hard and sticky, which hasn't been my experience with other (better) pad thais (Thai Siam). The cashew chicken was a tad on the salty side, but came with lots of broccoli, carrots, and peppers. Definitely better with plain brown rice than fried.
I love how Chaiyo's portions are huge without compromising quality, and their delivery time is super fast (we got our food in less than 30 minutes after calling in the order). Plenty of leftovers made me a happy gal the next day. Can't wait to order again!
My husband and I have been wanting to go to this restaurant for a while except we always forget about it when the urge arises and we end up elsewhere. So last night we finally decided to give it a go.
We arrived and while it was steady for a Friday night I wouldn't necessarily call it busy, except for a large group that was there to celebrate some kind of party.
The pluses are the tables are spaced enough so that you are not eavesdropping on your neighbors conversation and the food was pretty tasty.
The not so greats. After ordering our food, long and behold it took them approx 30 minutes to get us our 1 appetizer (yes I was timing, weird habit). 15 minutes later we received 1 entree. Of course it would have to be my entree that my husband would not touch because of some vegetables he just does not eat. As I'm picking at my entree, I really thought his would follow, unfortunately another 10 minutes passed and the waitress came around to re-fill our waters, I asked if she knew how much longer the remaining entrees would be. She said she would go check and long and behold there they are. My guess is they had been sitting there waiting to be taken out. Finally at the end we asked to have our food boxed up and they forgot to box up our rice until I had to remind them (15 min later), the waitress forgot.
They go on a scale of 1-5 stars and this was not consistent either.
My husband and I will probably not be returning for a sit down dinner, maybe take-out would've been a better experience.
This is a place to eat good food and actually get your moneys worth. It is a fact that you usually get ripped off when eating in seattle.I really dont like seattle but I will be back to Chaiyo just for the wonton soup. All of my food was great, very flavorfull and cooked properly. The one thing I didnt like was that the fried whole trout I had was advertised on the menu as boneless and it was full of bones.I dont mind the bones but I feel others will. Also be prepared because while eating the trout it was looking at me with its melted little eyeballs.
I'm going to boil this down real quick. Emphasis on the 1 $ here. It's cheap. Emphasis on the portion size here. Not always a good thing, but I pay about 10 dollars total and I get 2 full means worth of curry, pretty good curry or whatever. And they've got an awesome, awesome fried trout. Go here.
Ahhh my new favorite Thai restaurant in the Seattle area.
Came here for dinner on a Sunday night and the inside is very well decorated and cozy. Nice decor, nice lighting.
Ordered the Pad Thai and Beef sweet basil dish and shared with my girlfriend. Both dishes were delicious and they were only 7.95 per dish with a lot of food to show for. Steamed white rice was very fresh and tasty as well. We got a 3 out of 4 spiciness and it was perfect for what we wanted.
Other than the man behind us farting very loudly, we had a great time. Food was great, service was excellent, prices were wonderful. I would highly recommend this establishment for any Thai food lover.
So good! And they deliver!! We love their Tom Ka Gai, Red Curry, and Spicy beef salad.
The food is decent. I have the pad thai, it's alright.
This was our second choice for a Thai place, but the one we wanted to go to was closed. I think I'm glad they were. Chaiyo was super delicious, and has HUGE servings--both my boyfriend and I have leftovers for lunch today! The price was nice and inexpensive, and the service we received was great!
The food is pretty tasty. For us, the draw is its proximity. It's across the street from us. I agree with some comments about the service.
The food feels lighter and less greasy than other thai food I've had (Thai Tom in the U-District).
The lunch specials rock! One of my favs is the phad thai and bbq chicken combo. Mmmmm grilled chicken on the bone. You don't often see it on a menu anymore (everyone has gone boneless (boring)), much less on a lunch combo menu. The succulent, lightly browned phad thai served in a very authentic omelete wrap is a rarely encoutered example of how this dish is traditionally served. Try it! Most of us have become far too well acquainted with the sugary, red, "americanized" stuff that so many Thai places serve.
The portions are more than adequate and I always leave stuffed.
OMG!! I used to live around here- it was awesome then...
Went occasionally over the last few years...went on Friday- they redecorated- it's so nice looking now...
menu seems about the same and food and service are still wonderful!!
top 5 of my fav seattle thai places!!
This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants. The people working there are very friendly and even remember my boyfriend and me when we dine in. They've remodeled the place recently and it looks fabulous. Definitely stepped it up from what it looked like before.
It's never too busy whenever I go there, and the wait time for food is pretty average. Parking gets a little crowded in the evenings since there's a bar next door and a small lot across the street, but it's not too bad.
I've been there plenty of times and haven't been dissatisfied yet!
Chaiyo's chicken noodle soup and spicy seafood fried rice are my favorite. I often get their red curry too which if you ask for really spicy can be quite spicy. I tried most of the appetizers, I like the chicken satay but the stuffed chicken was kind of weird for me. Again if you need comfort food, the chicken noodle soup is the way to go~~~
Now that I've satiated my curiosity for Seattle Crab Co (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), I'm suddenly hellbent on trying more of my neighborhood restaurants, or all the other places I've snubbed for more than a year because I'm quite averse to new (read: scary) experiences, you see.
Which brings me to Chaiyo Thai Cuisine, just a few blocks down from our house. Like Seattle Crab Co, we've driven by this place four frillion times, but never felt up to trying it, until last night. My newfound rationale: it could be the BEST *fill-in-the-blank* food in the world, and we would never know because we are stubborn. And stupid. And lazy.
All this time, we've gotten our fix from Thai One On (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), which is just as close to our house as Chaiyo. We've considered trying other places, but we usually settle for TOO because we know it'll be good. The way I figure, if it ain't broke ...
Well, it's definitely NOT the best. But it was decent, and it quickly satisfied the Thai food void in my stomach. While at Chaiyo, though, we did a little comparison shopping. We ordered the chicken fried rice, green curry and pad see yew, all entrees we've had at Thai One On many, many times.
Fried rice = Chaiyo wins this round, because my husband was not able to detect the chemical taste TOO's fried rice is sometimes afflicted with (this happens when the wok is set fire at the end of cooking to give it a smoky flavor). And there was just enough spice to warrant it three stars, as we requested.
Green curry = Thai One On wins this round, because Chaiyo's version was too runny, more closely resembling soup, and it lacked in vegetable variety. It tasted good enough, but it didn't knock either one of our socks off.
Pad see yew = Thai One On takes this round, too, as Chaiyo's version was too sweet, and not smoky enough for our picky palates. Again, the dish was adequate, featuring wide noodles, egg and broccoli, but sort of ho hum.
It's completely unfair to compare Chaiyo to Thai One On, I know. It's sort of like comparing snowflakes. Every Thai restaurant is so different, who is to say which ones are better than others? Additionally, though, Chaiyo also lacks mood and ambiance, with which Thai One On is teeming. If given the choice between driving a few blocks to Chaiyo versus driving a few blocks in the other direction to Thai One On, I'd choose the latter.
First of all, I've never gotten sick after eating at this place, and that seems to be rare in Seattle. Every time I mention Thai food I hear, "Did you get Thai's revenge?"
Um, ew?
Anyway, this place is yummy. They've got the standard fare, plus the more true-to-culture items that transplants go for. I'm not a fan of the super-spicy stuff, but my boyfriend and his friends say that's this place's one downfall: "four stars" isn't as spicy as it should be. Whatever. It's still good, and I don't get a belly ache. I also get at least two meals for one: their servings are huge. (Note: if you order the soup, beware that a "one person serving" is actually enough for one person, not some piddly thimble-sized crap.)
Extra bonus: this place delivers if you order $20 or more, and each meal is around $6-10. Having people over and don't want pizza? With this place nearby, you can call for Thai food without waiting an hour to sober up, AND your friends can't blame their hangovers on their meal. Two birds with one stone, I tell ya.
I'll keep this short and sweet. I have ordered food here about 10 times and haven't been let down yet. The prices are very reasonable and the wait staff is always quick and kind.
I've been here twice, for lunch, my wife really likes this place, it's consistently good, nothing special, just good. Service and interior are nothing to write home about, but in a pinch, it works. Not really close enough for us to frequent this place, but my wife meets her Mom here from time to time. Lunch specials are priced about right and the place is clean. Service bugs me a bit here, like I said I've been here twice for lunch and it seems like they are either trying to free up a table and rush you out the door, or, they've forgotten you.
My better half's fav is the Pad Thai, I haven't been here enough to quote a fav, it's enjoyable for a quick lunch. Minus stars for lack of parking, my pet peeve, and minus one for up and down service. Portions are okay in size, that's another gripe I have about Thai food...
No view or much of an interior to look at so be prepared to "talk" to your lunch or dinner mate and watch out for the smokers you has to pass "through" as you walk by the tavern next door.
I grew up going to this family-owned, neighborhood restaurant, I still hold a soft spot in my heart for it , and still haven't found Thai food that comes close, especially considering their reasonable prices. Everything on their menu is delicious though my favorites have to be their Tom Ka Gai soup, Pud Woon Sen(thin noodle dish with sprouts and veggies), Kang Karee(potato and meat with yellow curry), and their Sticky black rice pudding. It's all scrumptious, the staff is very personable. When I go home this is one of the first places I hit up, they even make me Wai Wai noodles which they haven't had on their specialty menu for at least 5 years, and they still know that's what I want.
Currently living in a no man's land of Asian cuisine, let alone authentic Thai, I admit I'm stifling my cravings until I return.
My cousin recommended this place to us for lunch and we really enjoyed it! We had stuffed wings, tom kah soup (coconut milk soup with mushrooms and meat and stuff), pud kee mao, and thai basil beef. It was all just INCREDIBLE! I only give it 4 stars because my brother and sister-in-law have higher standards than I do, I personally just really enjoyed the food.
We asked for 3 star spicy and it tasted perfect to me, but 4 star would've been just fine, I think. So if you love a lot of spice then you should go for the 4 stars. The curry was a great blend of sweet and spicy, the basil beef was not only good quality ground beef but cooked perfectly, and being a big noodle fan i was totally impressed by the pud kee mao. Oh, and if you like Thai tea then you should try it out here, it's better than some other places I've been to.
The best part is how affordable everything was! Each dish was about $8. Try it out if you're ever at Northgate Mall!
This place never disappoints us, because the food is really good. The only thing I can say that is not good is the parking space.
We usually get the crispy trout fish (I can't remember what it is really called at the moment, but if I do, I'll update my review), spinach and tofu with peanut sauce, seafood fried rice, or beef panang. The fish cake appetizer is good, too. Finish your meal with the fried banana with ice cream.
The service is a bit above average. We went there again last night, and they were very helpful and nice, trying to accommodate us when we had 20+ people.
Chaiyo is my first favorite Thai restaurant. Since the first time I came here, a lot of people have recommended me this place.
Let's start with the food. I really like their Kwetiaw Lord (wide rice noodles with tofu, ground pork, shrimp and bean sprout in a spicy sauce). That is my favorite dish. Their fried rice is good too. A lot of my friends like their seafood fried rice, although other type of fried rice is just as delicious. Also, their Pla Prik King (not sure how to spell it correctly, but it's trout with some spicy sauce) is really tasty. Their lunch special menus are good deals as well. I like to get their fried rice + BBQ chicken combination. They are really good. Other dishes that I didn't mention are great as well. Some are much better than other Thai restaurants, and some are just as good. But I have never found anything that is worse than other restaurants. At least on par, or better.
Usually restaurants offer you up to 5 stars. But at Chaiyo, if you really like spicy food, you can go beyond 5 stars. I like to order 15 stars, and some of my crazy friends could go up to 20 or 25 stars, but they are insane. Moreover, the amount of food they give you is a lot! It's really worth the price. Other restaurants usually offer smaller portions for the same price. I also notice that when I buy to go, the portion of the food seems to be bigger; your to go box will be really full.
The place is really nice and clean. Really like the atmosphere. It has the cleanest restroom I have ever seen in a restaurant. In addition, service is really good. Staffs are really friendly and helpful. They also do free deliveries after 5pm, with minimal purchase of $20.
Food, place, and service are all terrific. Chaiyo does deserve 5-stars!
Went here after reading a couple Yelp reviews, it sounded pretty good and it was very close to our place. We ended up getting the Tom Kah Chicken which was really good. Got it 2 stars which was a little sweet but not as spicy as i would like, probably go with the 3 star next time. Also ordered some chicken satay (which was excellent!) and the Kang Keo Wan (green curry and chicken). All the food was great, large portions and decent service. I will definitely try it again.
I used to come here numerous times on my lunch, as I used to work in the general area. It came recommended to me by a Thai friend, and they have a wonderful staff working here. During the lunch hour it's typically been a little bit quiet, which is perfect for me. It's located in a friendly neighborhood and is worth the drive if you are not located nearby. They recently sent me a delivery menu, so I'm super excited to start ordering from them again!
Love yelp! I wanted to try a different Thai place than the usual suspects around my neighborhood. So, I went where else but Yelp and found this recommendation. I was not disappointed. I ordered take-out so I didn't dine in, but when I went to pick up, I was impressed with their nice decor and prompt service. It was pretty busy for a little neighborhood thai restaurant so I can only assume they have their regulars. Service was fast and friendly and I like that they acknowledged me right away although they were pretty busy and had to tend to their seated restaurant patrons first. This place is worth a return visit for a sit-down dinner. I plan to try some of their other menu items. I had their Chicken Panang Curry, Tom Kha Soup and Stuffed Chicken Wings. All were very good and I chose 3 stars based on the past reviews here which was just perfect since I tend to like things "medium spicy" which has enough heat but not overwhelming where you can't taste the flavors. The basil beef looks good so that's next on my "to try" list.
This place is pretty good and the service is good too. The atmosphere is pretty lackluster, but who cares this is Northgate after all.
Best Thai in the neighborhood, and a great value. Everything we've had, from the cold seafood-noodle salad, to the panang, phad thai, phad see-uw, peanut sauce, all very good. If you like it spicy, try adding a star to what you might be used to in other places.
