Great food and affordable prices. Its pretty crowded at night and on the weekends. If you're use to a really clean place - this may surprise you.

But, the best thing about this place is: KING KONG NACHOS!

Woohoo. Chacho's. A late-night institution in our fair city.

This is the place to go when you're intoxicated and service and cleanliness aren't your top priorities. In fact, I've never actually been here during daytime hours so please throw this review aside if you're reading it before the bars close.

After hours is hopping though. Sitting in line at the drive through (if you are being delivered by your DD) can take hours. Or maybe it just seems like hours because your level of hunger is multiplied by the number of beers you had earlier. Food is cheap, which is also good if you're post-bar and blew all your cash on shots or margaritas. Not that you would do, of course...

Chachos is one of those Mexican restaurants you go to because you're drunk or you truly enjoy the food. You don't really feel confident about the safety of the food handling but you don't care because its so cheap and tasty the good sense flies out the window.

Its been around for years though so they are doing something right.

This is a popular after bar spot to grab food and gets super packed. Some nights they have karaoke and bands jam. Good times at this location.

Nachos, burritos, sweet tea, frozen jack and coke, cilantro ranch salsa and mango salsa is something you should try at least once.

The highlight of my visit to Chupacarba (because I can't be bothered to remember the real name)? When the manager gave me over $30 worth of free food because the lady from the "Drive-in" was so rude to me, I had to pull around ant take my earrings off on her. The food was good though and that ice tea? Good and sweet in huge cups just like I like it!

My daughter and I went there for lunch today. It had been years since I've been there. My daughter was craving the Taco Norteno which they served with guacamole, not with slices of avocado. I ordered the cheese enchilada plate. The enchiladas were made with some type of Velveeta cheese...disgusting!!!! The rice obviously made from instant rice. The beans and tortillas were good. But I will never go back. They have obviously lost their touch.

I used to frequent this location for after work Happy Hours a few years ago, but never ate there. Fast forward to 2011. I met my son there for breakfast during a quiet weekday morning. Yuck....I could smell the nasty kitchen from the condiment area. Once our order was ready and we chose a place to sit, I cringed. The overall feeling is of sitting in a toxic environment. You can't help but notice (and smell) the sticky tabletops, chairs and floors.
My son loves this place because it's cheap and the servings are monstrous. I have fond memories of all the lovely ladies I met here over drinks. For dining? I won't be back. It's just too dirty and stinky in there. Makes me wonder about the food being contaminated with bacteria. EEK!

This is an update. My wife and used to come here all the time when we lived in SA.  It's been about three years so we stopped in for old times sake. First thing we noticed is they've done some remodeling.  Looks good!!  That's not what we came for though.  Chacho's is famous for their Ritas.  Turns out they've changed too.  No more jumbos!  Only larges now.  They still taste great but they're not as strong as they used to be.

We didn't eat this time but the food looked and smelled the same.  We never did come for the food anyway.  I'd say it's decent at best.

Chacho's is still cool even though the drinks aren't as big or as strong as they used to be.

    OMG, I LOVE CHACHOS!

HAHA, so I am from LA and living in SA was utter hell, but Chachos made it all better! Cheap margaritas and authentic Mexican food. I dont understand how nobody uses hot sauce in Texas? HAHA.

Nachos are off the chain!! Even a small order was delicioso con tacos with a Jack Daniels margarita on the side. If you are in the area and ready to pack on some calories, check it out.

I want to say they are open til super late or 24 hours too. I have gone here after the club many times. Food is cheap, drinks are cheap, and the people watching is AMAZING. =D

I'm fairly certain that Chachos is on the list of reasons of why San Antonio is fat. Every food item comes covered in cheese or with a pile of grease.

The place is dirty and the food is the farthest thing from mexican possible

Nachos and a kick ass salsa bar! What more could a girl need. This place was freaking awesome. If only Las Vegas had a place like this.

My fella's brother brought us out here when we were visiting San Antonio for the weekend. I was dying to try the Monster Nachos, but the guys weren't optimistic we would finish it, since the portions are enormous. We instead tried the half order, which we devoured with gusto. The queso dip is nom nom. Next time I'm in town, I'll be getting my nachos smothered in that!!!

The salsa bar was phenomenal too. I especially enjoyed the fresh tomato and cilantro, habanero and avocado salsa.

We also tried some alcoholic beverages. They were all delish. The margaritas were smooth and tasty and the Jack & Coke margarita was like a Jack & Coke Slurpee. Absolutely delightful.

    Loved, loved, loved this place!!!

Cheap Mexican food and drinks. That's why Texas is awesome. I don't wanna pay $4 for a little taco when I can pay $2 for an oversized taco stuffed with everything so much so that it might explode. Use lots of Napkins!!!

The food here does look a little greasy (aside from what I ate, yay!) but I can vouch for the fajita steak tacos being delicious. The margaritas are strong but not overly potent when you're drinking them.

I enjoyed all the varieties of salsa including something very reminiscent of tzatziki, avocado salsa, habanero, chile ancho.

Waiting for your order is like a cluster-f. Somehow they manage to figure out what you have even though you have number 250 and they're serving 100 and 398. I don't get it.

There are a few TVs for your sports watching pleasure. Otherwise you can sit and scarf a cheap taco and enjoy the random people that are seated here. Its quite a variety blend of SA.

Don't come here if you are on a diet!  We wanted to try TexMex when we were in San Antonio, but the food tasted pretty close to the California- Mexican (Mexicali?) we know and love. Maybe the portions were Texan - that was the fattest gordita I have ever had! The local clientele bear the marks of eating well. Chachos is open pretty close to 24/7, and they prohibit concealed weapons on the premises (sorry guys) -- but don't worry, the meat is already ready to eat: bonded to as
We especially enjoyed the mesquite beef taco that tasted like it had been deep fried. Perhaps a few chips to go with the nachos would make the sea of toxic yellow cheese more appetizing. we say skip this one on your road trip. You can find better in California.

decided to go to Chachos in SA upon arriving on 10/12/11, since we are familiar with it in Houston and just wanted something low-key. Well Chachos is nothing fancy but it is what it is. The taco salad looked fancy compared to the way it is in Houston. The meat was mixed randomly in the salad. I'm used to it being piled in one spot so i can distribute within my salad as needed - oh well!!!

    Cha Chos = Amazing!

I've only ever been to the location on I-10 & Callaghan but the service is great. The lines could be out the door and you could get seen in under 5 minutes. The food is delicious (& cheap). The margaritas are crazy strong and are only $5-6 a piece! Seriously, if you want to have the whole fancy experience with a waiter and pay $50 more, go to Pappasittos. But the food IMO is much better at Cha Chos! I've been going here for years and it never fails to amaze me!

Also - catered for my baby shower, we got Cha Chos and people LOVED the food, we didn't tell them until afterwards that it was Cha Chos and they were somewhat surprised!

For good, basic Mexican dishes - this is the place to go.  You really can't go wrong.
    Pricing is fabulous.
But the best reason to come is the margarita's - lime or strawberry - and the frozen Jack and Cokes.  Wonderful!!

Nachos: Delicious! We ordered the King Kong Nachos and this fed 5 people with a little more too spare. It was a variety of different cheeses, beans, and meat on top of a round of tortilla chips. In the middle their was a bowl of queso.

Salsa Bar: Lots of choices! It was quite awesome.

Drinks: Their margaritas were strong. I suggest getting the strawberry margarita and get it blended rather than on rocks.

Price: the prices were good for what you got!

Decorations: Awesome. At the one I went to it had a garage type feel.
The walls were basically garage doors which is quite clever.

I only ate here once, during a brief stay in Texas in 2007. I ordered nachos and was completely mindblown when I got home and opened the styrofoam container! This was LOADED with nachos, cheese, and beef. I could not even finish a fourth of it. I believe what I didn't finish, I gave to a friend to take home with him. It was really, really good!

Nothing less than 5 stars for this tex-mex staple.  These guys count calories by the 1000s.
You want a full order of nachos?  You better clear off your calendar.
You think you can handle a full size carne guisada burrito double sloppy (w/ enchilada sauce and queso)?  You might want to wear a diaper to bed.
    This place is that good.
Whenever I come back home to TX, I visit this place at least twice...  Once for the Chacho's Favorites Plate and once for the Monster Kong Nachos.  Yeehaw

Chacho's is oppressively noisy and kind of filthy. I cannot confidently recommend any menu item but the King King nachos. Sure, the rest of the menu is rambling enough to be intriguing, but stick with the nachos. Half an order of King Kong nachos feeds two grown adults, with piles of chips to spare. Theirs are of the more sloppy variety, mounded high around a central bowl of queso, with two kinds of cheese blanketing the mess of white corn chips and a variety of meats with refried beans. Nachos of this quantity could grow tiresome, except for their generous selection of fresh salsas, which turns this nacho-feast into a game of finding the perfect salsa-cheese-meat combination.

Also, get the frozen drinks. Beware, they're some of the strongest (and cheapest) around.

    Crazy place!

I used to go here because I had an office around the corner. Very cheap and the portions are gigantic. The nachos are around 5 bucks with the works and could feed a family of 10.

I feel really lucky that I have a business trip next month and will be able to visit this place again.

Side note: The breakfast enchilada is to die for. Austin could use a place like this.

During my trip to SA, Chachos was one of the spots that I went to with my cousin and his friends. I had a blast!

I think most of it had to do with the company I was with (there were even swingers there who tried to pick a few of us up), but the atmosphere contributed to a lot of it.

I had some nachos which were good, the margaritas are famous there, and they had a live band on that particular day which added a lot. Sitting out on the balcony for about 5 hours, drinking, eating, and laughing! Great times! One of the reasons why I want to go back down to SA as soon as possible!

The food was decent, but 90% of my rating was for the atmosphere and people on that night.

This place cannot be beat when it comes to price, quality, and quantity. The nachos are soooo good. The servings are ridiculously huge for the price you pay. I definitely wouldn't recommend getting a full-sized order for just one person unless you plan on taking most of it home and surviving off it for the next couple of days. Which actually sounds like a good idea. I think I'll try that next time I go.

The only thing I've had that I probably wouldn't get again is the beef fajita burrito with queso sauce. The tortilla was sweet which tasted a little too weird with the queso.

I'll just stick to my nachos and frozen margaritas and all will be right with the world.

    Best Dish: King Kong Nachos

The King Kong nachos are mammoth in size. Fortunately, the enormity of the dish does not compromise the taste of the dish. There are so many different types of cheeses, meats, and sauces. This order can most likely feed up to 5 to 7 hungry people so be careful what you wish for. I highly recommend this place if you are a) craving nachos and b) an eating machine.

Ever since I moved to San Antonio, I've heard people raving about Chacho's and how great their food is. After numerous people at work encouraged us to go, a coworker and I decided to give it a try. So, one day when the boss was out for a long meeting, we popped over.

Chacho's looks pretty much like a typical fast food restaurant from the outside, but the inside is actually quite large. I got a pretty basic dish, enchiladas, but was wowed by the sheer enormity of my plate. My refried beans alone probably could have been enough to fill me up. I also liked that they had a buffet style area with fresh topping and different varieties of salsa, like a cilantro one that was incredibly tasty.

On several nights of the week, they have bands or karaoke, which I imagine could be fun to watch for about 15 minutes or so (not a huge karaoke fan, my friends). My coworker said they have great margaritas, but as we were going back to work, she didn't indulge.

Given the sheer size of the restaurant, the line was a little chaotic, but we got through in a reasonable amount of time. We opted for seated in an area with lots of window for some breathing room.

I wasn't disappointed by Chacho's and their prices were great. I wouldn't mind going again, but I haven't made it a priority.

Frozen Jack and Coke - like a slurpee for grown ups!  Beware, doesn't taste like it's loaded, but you'll feel it when you stand up!
Best migas on the planet!!!!!  Spectacular after 2am (you fill in the details) - I've actually fallen asleep on the couch with my to-go container still in my lap!
Macho Chacho breakfast used to feed me and my two daughters when they were smaller.  pancakes, eggs, tortillas, beans, potatoes, bacon!
Also, some of the best refried beans anywhere.
Try the taco norteno, too.  Chicken fajita meat with avocado slices, and melted cheese, in a grilled flour tortilla - Heaven!
    open 24 hours - BONUS!
oh,man!  I might have to move back to San Antonio.

    Salsa...mmmm.
So many varieties at the salsa bar inside, don't settle for the bland, boring one they give you in the (5-lane!) drive-thru, trek your hungry little self inside and see what strikes your interest. The avocado and creamy cilantro ones are each delicious, and definately selections you don't normally find at your neighborhood taqueria.

This place really lives up to the "everything is bigger in TX" slogan. Portions are ridiculous and prices are very low. I know you don't normally like to share, but trust me on this one.

In the morning I like the breakfast enchiladas. Eggs, bacon, sausage and veggies wrapped in corn tortillas and topped with ranchero sauce and melted cheddar cheese. Try them with a little mango pico de gallo on top to add a fresh bite to this otherwise heartily savory dish.

The tortillas that accompany every plate are great. Very thick, with almost a pancake-like taste. (And before you dismiss my review because you think I'm crazy... I've actually heard this from several people!) And the margaritas...ohhhh the margaritas.

Good, cheap, and 24hrs! What's not to love?

When we turned of legal age at the end of the 80's decade, the novel idea of someone mixing Everclear into something as innocent and harmless as a strawberry margarita was awe inspiring. We would sit giddily in our chairs and marvel at the liquor themed cornice above the counter displaying alternate bottles of Cuervo and Everclear. Just a few years removed from trash can punch in the backyard of some unsuspecting parents, who wanted nothing more than to get away for a quiet weekend alone, while their kids had a few hundred friends and strangers over for cocktails, we cherished the idea.

Well that was the way we liked to start off the evening back then, just a couple of Moonshine margarita's to start the night. Today that would be the way I would end an afternoon. I'm so old!

    Today Chacho's seems to be carrying on the same way, sans the Everclear, with revelers streaming in at all hours of the night for booze and nachos. Unfortunately it has the look and smell of a bar now and nothing is as unappetizing as the idea of eating in a smelly bar. The tacos are still fat and loaded with savory chicken or beef fajitas. The barbacoa on corn on weekends is still enough to make three tacos out of and the nachos come in three sizes;

    big
    huge
    and
    really?

If your workplace is close enough and you and the gang want a place to throw down a mountain of nachos and a couple of real tequila margaritas then Chacho's is still a great place to do just that. I wouldn't consider bringing Grandma and the kids here on a Sunday after the sit, kneel and stand dance for some well deserved barbacoa. There are much quieter and cleaner places for that.

I'm ranking this 4*'s coz it's cheap, serves alcohol and is open 24hrs. Face it, there's really nothing special about Mexican food just about anyone can make it and Chacho's doesn't try to put on like it's something more than what it is (just a place to shove food, beers and margaritas down your throat). I had fun here and the food was more
than edible. Can't go wrong with the fajita plates and the chicken combo plate was more than decent too. The "top shelf" margaritas were a little weak and sour but the price was right so can't complain too much.

"This is the Wal-Mart of Tex-mex."

Yes, indeed. It is dirty, trashy and incredibly un-exceptional.  The only good thing I can say about this place is that I ate what wasn't the worst meal of my life.  The following disclaimer located on the menu pretty much gave it away "Chicken may contain bones.  All bean products may contain small rocks.  To enhance flavor, we use peanut oil & MSG."

    Rocks!?! No thank you.

This place sort of made me feel like I came at the wrong time.  That is to say, I should have been drunk.  I noticed things, as a sober person, that kind of clouded my view.

First off, there's a sign when you walk in that says, "If you're looking for more of a family restaurant, try another location."  Then, there are other signs posted everywhere from management talking about how they have had tons of trouble with underage drinking, and have implemented new measures to prevent this.

Point taken.  So we walk around the corner and there is mass chaos- four cash registers have no set lines, so people are pushing and the people nearest to the wall are having a hard time getting out of the other lines.  Then, once you get to the front of this mass of people, there is a trough of beers on the floor, out of viewing range of any employees.  HELLO!?  That might be part of your problem.  Our cashier was rude to us, but we still ordered food and drinks anyway.  We figured we still needed the Chacho's experience.

Queso was delicious, as were the drinks.  I had a pina colada that wasn't too weak or too strong.  My husband had a margarita and felt the same way.  Our food was average.  The place is open 24 hours, and it definitely shows.  Everything is greasy and dirty- again, I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't sober when I walked in, but I couldn't help but feel like I shouldn't touch things.  The menus, the tables, the walls, the salsa bar- greasy.  We sat a table by a pole, and the pole was where they kept their bucket of dirty water to rinse out their rags when they bus tables.  I could smell the dirty water the whole time I was seated.

I'd go back if it was 2 am, because that queso was good, and I'd had a few drinks.  But the sanitary part of me just couldn't handle this place too well, and the chaos of the line, and people rushing around pushing into each other and children running around while their parents got loaded was just a little much for me.

this place is a gem, a dirty gem of a place.

walking in you feel like you're at a weird mall food court.
    a dirty, noisy, food court.

    so...
order anything that sounds ridiculous on the menu ex: king kong nachos. go ahead and get a frozen jack and coke
get lots of napkins, load up at the salsa bar
& don't plan on doing anything for a few hours, you will need a nap

I'd take Chacho's over Taco Cabana any day. Don't be shy around the taco norteno, its your friend.

Their margaritas aren't very good, and they make you get in a fight with your little brother and say things you shouldn't say. I swear they do, its happened more than once.

Maybe I should stop getting the margaritas. Or get a new brother.

You cannot beat the price for the amount and quality of food you're going to get. Something the other reviewers left out is Chacho's salsa bar. You don't just get one kind of salsa when you get your meal. Their mango salsa is absolutely delicious! Try them all!

Also, Chachos has since opened a new location. Its 2nd location is located at Perrin-Beitle and 410 (outside the loop).

    5 out of 5 stars!
