The city of Cerritos, in its never-ending attempt to be the cultural center of southeast Los Angeles County/Northern Orange county does everything top notch, including creating empty space into art space. In this case, making this space into a work of art itself.

I attended the dedication of the Cerritos Sculpture Garden and recall sitting inside a large tent with refreshments being served. It was a cloudy day and began to slightly drizzle. A delegation from Cerritos' sister city, Loreto, Baja California, Mexico, flew over to help commemorate one of the sculptures that memorializes the mid-air collision that happened over Cerritos back in the mid-1980s.

There are several sculptures already installed in the garden, with space to accommodate up to 20 pieces. One of the unique pieces is a replica of the Statue of Freedom found on top of the US Capitol building in Washington, DC.

It's a good meditation area and actually is designed so that teachers can even bring their students in for a more natural setting. I don't know if teachers across the street at Cerritos High School would partake in that, but I could see college lectures or discussion groups taking advantage of the acoustics of the mini-amphitheater on one end of the garden.

It's very well lit at night and is actually under constant surveillance by the next-door sheriff station, so no bad behavior allowed! I recommend checking it out after you've checked out the library on one of these great So-Cal days.

What a nifty little garden!  Our visit here was part of our Sunday morning adventure.  It's just beautiful.  So far, three sculptures have been installed, including a memorial to the 1986 Cerritos Air Disaster.  The landscaping is beautiful, and I expect this garden is going to change dramatically as it grows.
Although I often roll my eyes at the creative restrictions Cerritos places on its homeowners (What do you mean, I can't paint my house fuschia, cut down all the trees on my property and pave over my front lawn?), I'm especially pleased that the city believes in creating public spaces like this one.

I did not realize this constituted a sculpture garden since there are maybe three or four actual sculptures here, but it is a nice place to take a break and relax, it would be even better if the road wasn't so loud.

You don't find many gardens like this out here, so it's kind of nice to be able to sit on the many benches scattered throughout this place and enjoy the scenery and the company.

There's a few fountains, statues, and grassy areas for either you or your kids to enjoy.

If you're coming here, definitely check out the library right next door.

It's also a very safe place since the police station is right next door.
