C.E.O. Women is an inspiring local organization founded in 2000 by Farhana Huq, as she describes it:

"to address the unique needs of immigrant and refugee women struggling to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the world."

In short, the impressive but selfless team at C.E.O. Women provides classes & mentorship to help immigrant women (who in most cases are struggling to support themselves and their families in our foreign land) learn American survival skills, make connections and generally get themselves onto a positive, self-sufficient path.

I was first introduced to C.E.O. Women years ago via Kate Hamilton, Farhana's first employee and key lieutenant.  I've attended (and even spoken at) several classes, where I had the chance meet some of the women clients... and to glimpse the helpful and hopeful environment this remarkable organization provides.

By all means, please look up C.E.O. Women and give them your support if: (a) you have any inclination to donate time, supplies or money to help the families in need around you or (b) you know an immigrant or refugee woman who could use some help making life work in the SF Bay Area.

Meet the Business Owner: Farhana H.

Founder and CEO Farhana Huq founded C.E.O. Women in 2000, the 3rd start-up venture she has been involved with, after being inspired by the struggles that poor, single women in her own family faced to become self-sufficient.

Farhana created "Micro-enterprise in Action", a self-initiated audio documentary on the lives of women entrepreneurs from around the world. She was recognized as one of the "40 Under 40" business professionals to watch by the East Bay Business Times. She was named the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year National Finalist in the Supporter of Entrepreneurship Category. Most recently she was elected to the Ashoka Fellowship, the most prestigious fellowship for leading social entrepreneurs around the world.

C.E.O. Women has won many awards including the 2005 Innovation Award for micro-enterprise development in the U.S.,  the 2007 SBA San Francisco Women's Business Champion Award and the 2007 KQED Women's History Month Local Hero Award.
