Review Highlights
I once found a pair of gorgeous cream suede, architectural heeled, Dolce & Gabbana pointy pumps on sale for SEVENTY FIVE effin DOLLARS! For weeks, I did nothing but build my outfits around these fabulous shoes. But deals like that don't come around very often and never really have again.
But I still love this place. It's close to home. I know the neighborhood well having spent 4 years of high school near here. They built an insane shoe plaza across the street, which I hate but I bear it. You can still find decent deals, especially home goods. It's a comfort thing that keeps me coming back.
If you want a grander, crazier, Bitch-I'll-gouge-your-eyes-out-if-you-look- at-my-cashmere-sweater-funny-again experience. Go to the Cortlandt street locale. We're much more civil in Brooklyn.
Compared to the store thats in NYC this place has both better and worse aspects.
(+)
-Its much less crowded, you can hear yourself think and actually move about freely.
-The discounts, who does not like a bargain?
(-)
-Its separated into two stores, right across the street from one another.
-Its kinda far for us manhattan dwellers
-Its far smaller than the other one
-Sales people are clueless and rude. All the people working there seem lost in their own little world and really dont care about much going around them.
So all in all its ok, if you do not like crowds this might be the place to be. However I enjoy the other Century 21 better just for the fact they have more selection.
Discount prices for name brand items.
They are constantly getting new shipments and once something is sold out, they are not always going to stock the same item again. So this is a first-come, first-served type of store. I've gotten London Fog raincoats for $40... coach shoes for $45... Ralph Lauren queen size comforters for $100!
Jut dont rely on sales assistance, because they don't do that here...
What you see is what you get and they will be sure to tell you that in case you forget.
Little known secret: They very rarely have coupons or extra discounts.
Again.. this is very rare but it does happen. Be sure to sign up for their emails, -last time they did it was for the holidays and i believe it was a 20% off coupon. Also a couple of months ago, if you paid with your AMEX card, you also got about 20% off. But they do not advertise these promos and the sales assistants wont always know what is up so come informed... and you tell THEM what's up.
They get a one star for today:
While it has lower prices than most other stores, they have terrible customer service. Just this morning they denied acceptance of their own 20% off coupon.
Turns out that they have long lines that make it the 11:30AM coupon cut off time easy to miss. They don't make any exceptions to the point of refusing to have a manager to come over and discuss the matter.
Next ten times I go in to buy something I'll bring 50 items to get scanned and then have 49 voided. They waste customer time, I'll gladly waste theirs.
Overall I'd give them a two out of five. The cashiers will walk away from customers. Their shoppers tend to be the type who cannot think for themselves and bring five other people as back up decision makers. And aside from being the closest thing to being hell on earth let's just face it, they have some fugly people working there that could charge $2 per peek at a freak show.
Big four newly renovated floors a pleasure to shop in, free parking if you buy over $50 for 2hours or the regular price $3 for 2hours.
Don't come here if you NEED something right now, just pop in now and than and browse, come early morning, if you want to shop peacefully, but even in the busiest time I'd take it over the one at ground-zero, and be prepared to sip through mountains of clothes.
Something might be wrong with the merchandise, inspect the goods [pockets have 3 walls, all buttons are still around, etc.], the store makes money somewhere, not everything between the walls are bargains.
The 1st/only time I came here was with a friend. He knows I love shopping name brands and I always "Pay In Full". So he suggest me go to Century 21 with him. I thought it was a dream to shop name brands for cheap (I'm like, they have that?). So I was so excited to go, like yay! So we went there, walked through the door, see clothes all over the place. Given that this is kinda like a discount department store, its OK I guess. Then went towards the jeans sections, see some True Religion/Rock& Republic/7 Jeans/etc., styles were O...K... um, they didnt really have stuff like D&G - saw a few things or like Gucci/LV. No handbags that suits me.
Its just not how I expected it.. But other stuff like TR/DG/7Jeans/etc for some pplz might be OK, but just not me...
And....they just got even better:
1 - They now have a 300-car parking lot on 88th street. No more fighting over street parking or dealing with public transpo.
2 - They re-did the entire layout of the store.
The downstairs shoe section has been moved to the entire second floor across the street.
The basement section is entirely men's suits and formal wear - and a lot of it.
The main floor has been completely re-configured with sections devoted to dress shirts, outerwear, etc.
All in all, there's more space, less cramped, alot easier on the eyes, and, well, just more.
Bloody awesome.

Buying quality shouldn't be a painful experience-- for your wallet or your sanity.
That's why I'd rather shop here than the Manhattan location. It's not nearly as crowded with bargain-hungry-savage beasts.
Great selection on top brand merchandise, for a fraction of the price. Get anything from Prada shoes to True Religion jeans and everything in between.
Seriously, you're not a real bargain shopper if you've never shopped here.
While in Bay Ridge last week, I just had to stop by Century 21. I hadn't been here in years and was glad to see that they had expanded the store as well as added a garage (although I didn't park there).
It's definitely not as great as the store in Manhattan but it's perfect if you want to take your time and shop in an environment that is not ultra chaotic. Sure, the selection won't be quite as great, but it's still pretty damn good. :)
I went there to buy my mother in law a birthday present and almost died when I saw a $1,500.00 price tag!!! What the hell???? This is supposed to be discount? After all the hands that have touched it, after it's been trampled and stomped on, I am supposed to buy that semi-cute designer reject for $1,500? Eff that.
They do however have decent casual clothing for kids and men also. I bought suits for my kids for reasonable prices.
This place is hit or miss when I am shopping here. I can find some great buys and then come here and leave with nothing. It is a great store for people that are shopping for clothes on a budget...but it also is not cheap clothing.
Unfortunately to find that "gem", you need to hunt through mounds and mounds of clothes (something I hate with a passion). So if you are a patient shopper, that does not mind jumping into piles of clothing to save some cash then this is the place for you.
This place is a mad house!!! PACKED with everything inch to inch along with a lot of people. It was a weekend so that was a bad idea. I was in for about 30 minutes and right back out. A good place to find deals for expensive fashion I guess.
great stuff!!! This place is 100% better than any outlet. Trust me the outlet doesn't even have close to the various designer selections. If your lucky enough, you can actually buy the same current season designer items thats at BLOOMINGDALES here for half. EXAMPLE: there were MARC JACOBS jeans at bloomy's for 190.00 CENTURY had it for 75.00 NO TAX!! NOT IRREGULAR!! DAMN!!! They got RALPH LAUREN BOXERS cheaper tha RAPLH LAUREN OUTLETS!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!! they got it all!!!!!!!they even got parking facilities now!!
Good stuff but the customer service is not very welcoming at times.
for the clothes/shoes hound, if you live in new york and you have never shopped at century 21, you are a rube in sheep's clothing. [an impoverished rube, to boot]
far better than loehmann's both in price and the clothes etc. they carry, century 21 lives up to its legend.
there is little point in trying to describe their stock, you just have to go & shop fer yourself.
in addition to up-to-the-minute clothes, etc., the building that houses c21, dates to the heyday of shopping elegance [like the movie palaces of yore] with marble and deco-ness abounding.
if you're not up to the teeming cortlandt street century 21, the brooklyn outpost is often less crowded.
however, i think their stock is not as good as the financial district c21, so keep that in mind. the purses, shoes, + high-end clothing are better at cortlandt street.
if you're shopping for haute-ish clothes, etc. go to the manhattan branch.
I love this place, and try to go at least a few times a year. The only problem is, when I really think about it, I probably only find something I like here one out of every three times I go!
To put it straight, 95% of the clothing you will find in here looks like it should be discounted. Scratch that, make that "98%." The upside is, when you DO find something really nice for really cheap, you will be ecstatic.
My recommendations: great for picking up premium drawers (Polo, CK, etc.) at a nice price. OK for neckties and dress shirts. Shoe selection is well-priced but just "OK." If you are crowd-phobic like my parents, however, you need to stay away. This place can get RIDICULOUSLY crowded, and you'll feel like you're trying to sort through neckties on the 6 train.
Buy all my socks and underwear here.. Store is crawling with tons of ass from all over Brooklyn.. Love the hot milfs and the barely legal daughters who come here to shop for bathroom towels. Also enjoy the low brow latinas with monster bubbles.. Occasionally one can find some "normal" clothes here, like a nice tie or even a steal on a pair of shoes.. Most of the stuff is reject clothing that never fits but the prices are awesome..Scored a sweet Tumi Leather luggage bag marked down to 100 plus bucks from 699 originally. They also have a nice new parking garage that makes shopping here alot more convenient.
I used to live a block away from this store, way back when Funcoland was right across the street. I hated getting dragged here by my sister, who would make me purchase my 'nice' clothes (for weddings, funerals blah blah blah). I remember it being a mess then. I am not one for bad feng shui, like aisles that cut off, aisles that lead you nowhere, or aisles that have to be made like a beaten path.
Recently I came back for a friend's wedding. I lost my tie on the trip from Cali to JFK. So since I was staying with my sister, this was the closest place. I won't say it was a mistake to go, mostly because I gave myself a two hour cushion to look for a tie. A TIE. And I needed every friggin minute.
It wasn't that the selection was bad. It was quite excellent. But the clientele and the workers just ruined it. Almost everyone had wretched BO. And people are rude and just clog up the already confusing aisles with bags, baby strollers, etc and then get really mad at you for asking them to move. Maybe I've been out of NY too long. Or maybe all NYers really are assholes.
The lines are ludicrous. And the cashier will not be friendly or acknowledge that you are alive. Some kind of chitchat would go a long way for the 30 minute wait you just put me through.
So, selection is good. Just make sure it's an all day event.
This Century 21 store is a bit out of the way in Brooklyn. The store is smaller and the range is limited. However if you get there early on in the day you can still find a few hidden gems.
The thing I do like about this store is that it's not as busy as the manhattan store so you don't have to fight your way around the shop. If you wear bigger sizes (which are usually well stocked) then I'd recommend this store over the manhattan store.
I visit this store at least 3 times a month. It's called addiction.
I'm giving this 3 stars because while it is better than its Manhattan counterpart with regards to crowds and overall insanity, the merchandise is slowly going downhill. It never compared to the Manhattan store in terms of quantity & awesomeness of range, but you use to be able to not have to search so hard.
The bags. They have NOTHING good. And the bags behind the glass cases are seasons old Kooba, Botkier, etc.. and the prices are not good. I could and have done better at sample sales where the merchandise is maybe a season old and not 5. But sometimes you can find a gem. I just haven't in a long while.
The small accessories section is always good. I can never have enough wallets, makeup bags, passport holders...
The clothing is not too bad albeit at times tacky, but again it seems you need to dig harder than in the past.
Shoes are also going downhill. I haven't found anything in a long while and that's just plain weird for me.
I am a picky, picky shopper, so maybe this place deserves 4 stars, but not until I come home with one amazing score.
$8 bucks for designer dress pants? I got exactly what I was looking for. Open and shut case! If you go, use the cashiers on the mens side of the store to save yourself some drama. You can do pretty well in this store. I am tempted to go back today. It is a madhouse on the weekends, so go on a quiet weekday.
If you don't know about the Manhattan location, you would find this place a good place to shop. But if you're a Manhattan transplant like me, you'll realize that this store is somewhat lacking in terms of offerings as compared to that in the downtown location.
That said, it's a decent place to shop if you're a bargain hunter. Just beware, the place is not for those who can't stand stroller shopping and loud families department store browsing on a weekend. This location seems to have a lot more kids running around in the stores.
Not impressed by the womens section. I ended up buying a few pair of undies and bras.
My boyfriend on the other hand found a ton of ben sherman and penguin polo's (all he ever wears) for $30ish which is a steal. You have to do a lot of sifting to find your size. Lots of XL's and higher. He found a few mediums though.
Huge mens shoe section, may even be bigger than the womens which is quite rare.
The home store across the street is where I made most of my purchases. I got a great queen size quilt for my bed for $19.99!
A couple ice cream dishes and a shower curtain with animated teeth with faces which is adorable. I love home stuff...now i just need a bigger home.
Decent shopping area in a busy shopping district of 86st. Their stores cover a vast area of the block, as they do not occupy a single large building. It's like J&R world of manhattan.
It's very cramped inside, and the workers are ultra slow - especially the cashiers. Not the friendliest service either.
As for deals, I really don't find it very special here. But what do i know.
But if you are around the area come check it out. Parking is hell on the block, you might have luck couple of blocks away. The 86th train station is right next door. R train.
Love it, Love it, Love it, Can hurt your wallet. What can I say love to shop. I have bought so many things from there that are half the price. The one thing I could say the workers are very slooooooow.
Oh yeah, if it's clothing try it on before you leave. Things tend to not run it's true size.
It's more adult clothing that has this problem.
I love this place, especially for their Home Department. I live close by, so it's always a pleasure to have a great place like this. The best time to shop here are early mornings anyday and afternoons during the week. The weekends can be unbearable if you aren't familiar with the area, the store set-up or if you don't know what you're looking for. Otherwise, it's organized and inexpensive.
They knocked down the bowling alley next to the Home Store - sep. building, and paved a larger parking lot. You have to pay for the spot unless you spend more than $50. Less variety than the downtown store, but a nicer, smaller scale.
The best things about this Century are the kids clothes (baby shower and birthday gifts...go here!), men's shirts and unmentionables, and the housewares. I've never found anything I'd spend money on other than underwear. DO NOT GO ON THE WEEKENDS! It's filled to the rim with pushy moms, dads, uncles, cousins, aunts, next-door-neighbors, and the occasional canine.
Another good thing about this location is that it's near a lot of other shopping, so you can just use it for the bathroom (downstairs by the men's shoes) and go to the Nine West or Gap or KINGs afterwards.
Good prices and great variety. There are often sales and new merchandise is added periodically. A fun place to shop or just to browse.
It doesn't have as much as it's manhattan counterpart, but it is to be expected. It's brooklyn after all. I do prefer this location because it's very convenient for me, and it's less crowded than it's manhattan counterpart.
The Brooklyn outpost is not quite as well-stocked as its Manhattan counterpart. And the stock seems slightly less stylish. I shop here for nylons and socks. There are good values to be had, but I have to admit that I don't pick up many other items here.
The Brooklyn C21 doesn't have the same selection of merchandise as the one in downtown Manhattan, both in terms of selection and fashion sense. That said, if you're a guy looking for business clothes and underwear then it's hard to beat the prices. They also have a great selection of shoes and good prices. Hey, where else can you get a nice pair of Bruno Maglis for under $200? Behind the main clothing store is the housewares store. There are some really great values in luggage and kitchenware to be found.
Not as good as Manhattan, but convenient and less crowded. The location is great because it's next to all of my other favorite stores too. It's great if you're looking for a bargain, but the store doesn't seem to have as much of a selection so be prepared to do some searching.
This location is a lot smaller than the Manhattan location and isn't as crowded. You'll have to dig through quite a bit of stuff before you'll find something... so be patient. The staff at this location are friendlier than the Manhattan location.
I used to love stores like this, but I no longer have the patience for them. The messiness of the merchandise, the shoppers, the workers, ack, what a horrible world. I had to kill 30 minutes in the area, so I dropped in thinking maybe I'd find some good deals. Instead what I found was a lot of junk - fashion rejects and the like. I even went to the housewares side, which was at least better organized, but I waited in line for 20 minutes to pay for towels, because there weren't enough cashiers for the long lines, and some mother/daughter team in front of me had so much stuff between the two of them (where does one living in NY have the space to store so much crap??) and were splitting the loot into separate purchases. To top it off, the jerk behind me grew so impatient, he cut in front of me when I didn't notice that another register had opened. Didn't bother to point it out to me, just walked right past me and up to the counter as soon as that spot opened. Classy. I won't be going back.
i love this place. yes, it's not as big and magnificent as the Manhattan store... but what do you expect? it's brooklyn. i still think this place has a decent selection. especially in the shoes/lingerie area. i always buy tons of high end labels and for 75% off the original price? can't beat that. i don't feel so bad paying little for a Helmut Lang skirt or Dolce & Cabana cami set unlike i do when i would get something at "Pretty Girl" or "Telco". anyway, it's my fav. place to shop.
The selection was enormous but my GOD the store was crowded. It was my own fault for trying to shop at 3:00 on a Saturday afternoon but I did lose my patience after a while. I like what I purchased and the prices were reasonable, but if I ever go back, it would be first thing in the morning on a weekday!
my purse with 1500$ camera and wallet was stolen today in a shoe department. i'm devastated. doubt i will come there ever again.
