5 reviews for Celebrate The Macallan- Tasting Event
For my 200th Review, I wanted to talk about the Macallan Even I attended last night.
The reviews on this that preceded mine were great, so I won't get too much into it.
Here's what I liked:
1.The VENUE-Vibiana was SPECTACULAR-it didn't even bother me when my friend told me that this place was used in The Hills last season for some runway blah blah blah.
2. The HOST- Eden, from Macallan was the consummate host- He introduced himself to alot of us in the courtyard before we went in. Two hours later, he remembered my name when we thanked him and said goodbye.
3. The SCOTCH- 10-12-15-17-18yr- All great, all appreciated!
Here's a couple things I didn't like:
1. The ACOUSTICS- When speaking into the handheld microphone, hearing was ok. Once Eden started speaking the high cathedral ceilings thwarted his efforts to be heard, which leads to the second thing I DIDN'T like
2. Some of the AUDIENCE- I hope it was because of the acoustics that people decided to chatter during the presentation- I hope it wasn't because they were so self centered that they thought all they needed to do was show up for free scotch and think they were in some pretentious lounge or dare I say, discotheque. But it really was rude.
Had a good night in spite of this.
Eden did a great job. Looking forward to next year.

So how can I not enjoy a single malt scotch tasting?
Second only to cognac and Suntory whiskey, I like
scotch whiskey. Macallan is a reputable brand.
Macallan Tasting Event here was not only an
educational presentation, but it was elegant.
Well done.
These are the single malts that I tasted last nite:
10yo ... 1 oz ... oh pls, wake me when u'r done.
12yo ... 1/2oz ... rosy color, fruity, tasty, fun.
15yo ... 1/2oz ... extremely light, very smooth.
17yo ... 1/2oz ... beautiful distant cousin to ...
18yo ... 1/2oz ... the "it" shot (combo of all imo).
Had they worn kilts I would rate 5-stars, just say'n. ;p
*** Slàinte! As they say in Scotland, "good health". ***
FREE SCOTCH!!! GOOD FREE SCOTCH!!! Do you understand how awesome this is? There's even a hip, attractive crowed and food. How can you not have signed up for this yet?
You want to know more? Picky! Fine...
I came to this event expecting to taste one or two of the cheaper Macallan bottles while enduring a boring sales pitch as I waded through a sea of tables with more expensive bottles for sale. What else would you expect if someone offers to pour you scotch downtown? I turned out to be completely wrong. Well, not quite completely - there WAS a sea of tables. First off, the venue was snazzy; an upgraded cathedral with the sea of tables (as I predicted!) covered in black and sporting silver pitchers and fine glassware. This all lead up to the stage, where the Macallan spokesman gave his (occasionally funny) discussion of the Macallan traditions and whiskey making in general.
We were greeted at the door with servers handing out glasses of the Macallan 10 year to sip on while searching for a seat. Once everyone was seated, the Macallan spokesman stood up to say a few words. The rest of the evening fell into this rhythm: servers bring increasingly fine scotch, the spokesman gets up and discusses the scotch and history of Macallan, then you have a few minutes to drink and talk.
Overall, this was a pretty awesome experience. I like scotch, but have never had the chance to compare scotch of five different qualities in succession. While we enjoyed all the scotch we tried, my friends and I could certainly detect how the younger scotch was not as interesting as the older.
Now to the negative aspects, which were fortunately few. The sound system sucked. I'm not sure if it was just where we were sitting or if it was the whole room, but there was some serious reverb that made understanding the speaker difficult. Second, and this is only a minor complaint that is possibly mitigated by the first complaint, is that the speaker's jokes were a little flat. But really, who cares? He was funnier than me and was giving me free drinks to boot.
This event was about trying fine scotch that you may not try otherwise in a fun atmosphere, which happened with resounding success.
I honestly did not expect much going into this, especially when I was handed a single drink token...but to my surprise we went into the old church and were served a generous scotch flight that began with the 10 year and went up to the 18. 18 and 15 were my favs...
The MC was funny and gave a little education and insight into scotch, there were some free tasty amuse bouche to go along, it was a really fun night....
A fun and "edumacational" event, for only $5? With ALCOHOL? HIGH-END alcohol to boot??? Woo-hoo! I had been invited to this event before, but this was the first time I could actually make it, and I'm glad I did. It was held in the lovely Vibiana, a converted church/cathedral in downtown LA. It was all very organized and fancy- they even used a super-fancy, super rare Windows Surface monitor to do the presentation- neat! They served yummy appetizers during the initial seating and schmoozing time, including fantastic sliders, baby red potatoes with brisket on top, and some kind of onion tart. Then we get to the Macallan- we tried generous pours of the 10, 12, 15, 17, and 18 year olds. Delicious. The Macallan spokesman had a great Scottish accent and was very funny too. He explained the long and complicated process of making Macallan and invited everyone to visit the Macallan distillery in Scotland- you just have to cover your airfare. It was a really fun event, and I know a lot more about expensive Scotch to be a better drinking snob, haha.
