The architecture and decor is Victorian, which is not our favorite, but we found it to be very tasteful.  The downsides are, it's a little spendy and you have to overlook the location (it's in the middle of a working class residential neighborhood, not wine country). The positives outweighed the negatives, however.

The thing we liked best about this place was the pre-dinner hors d'ouevres hour.  It was our first time in Napa and we quickly discovered that most tasting rooms close at four or five pm.  But you don't go out for dinner until seven or eight. So, unless you go back to your room and take a nap, there's this big hole in the day with nothing to do.  Cedar Gables' solution is to host complimentary hors d'ouevres in the downstairs library. Everyone comes, so you can mingle with the other guests, if you want.  There are plates of fresh fruit and really good cheeses and the proprietors open four or five bottles of different varieties of local wine.  They will keep opening the wine until everyone has left. They don't charge a fee and they don't expect a tip--I think they get the wines for free from local wineries as a cross-marketing thing.

The proprietors are very nice and the breakfast was incredible.  They also leave a small carafe of port by the bed, a nice touch.

Victorian charm oozes from every nook and cranny of  rambling Cedar Gables Inn.   The real wood paneling,  leaded windows, crystal chandaliers, fireplaces, antiques, faux antiques, and bric a brac create a delightful 19th century atmosphere.   Our room (the Churchill Chamber) featured beautiful, somber decor, a jaccuzi, a fireplace, and a decanter of port with dark chocolate.  Proprieters Sue and Ken were warm, helpful, and accommodating about our vegan requirements.  Sue went to great trouble to prepare a nice vegan breakfast for us.  The location, on a quiet residential street, is within walking distance of downtown.

This Old English styled Inn is such a jewel.  Nestled in a tree-lined neighborhood, downtown shopping and restaurants like Celadon, and even the library are within easy walking distance, 3 to 5 blocks away.  Cedar Gables is less than a mile from Copia.  The Napa Valley Trolley stops right next to the Inn.

Owners Ken and Sue are welcoming and knowledgeable guides to the city.  They know the best restaurants and were really helpful in advice of where to go, how to get there, and even assisting us with making reservations for us.  During breakfast, we mentioned to Sue we were going to take the trolley to Copia.  Before we had finished, Ken printed the route map and schedule for us.

Friday nights, they host a tasting with a local vineyard.  We were fortunate to meet Gary Koehler from Dutch Henry.  Ken and Gary played a few songs for us, making for an enjoyable start to our evening.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Free Wi-fi is available!  Breakfast is sumptuous and fresh.  Sue's homemade cookies are also fantastic.

If you like bed and breakfasts, this is a great little spot. But  B&B means no TV, which is not for me.

History

Established in 1892

Susie was running a small Culinary School in Los Gatos, CA and I was in Marketing when we met.  Two months later we started talking about things we could do together, & work this hard for ourselves.  Since we were sipping wine in her backyard, I mentioned a B&B.  She said "I've never stayed in one."  On Saturday we drove up to Napa & talked to Caroline Roberts, our Realitor.  She said there are 3 in the area- 2 in Calistoga and 1 in Napa.  We drove to Calistoga- they were cute little 4 bedroom places w/ lace and teddybears.  I'm not the lace & teddy bear kind of guy, so we drove to Napa.  As we drove toward the B&B we passed big beautiful Victorians. When we got there it was a short adobe roofed house.  We were disappointed, so we drove around to see other Victorians in the area.  When we got to the corner of Oak & Coombs we loved the look of the Cedar Gables Inn.  We stopped so Susie could at least see a B&B.  Before we could ring the doorbell , my cell phone rang- Caroline said " one

Meet the Business Owner: Ken and Susie P.

Ken started as an Electronics Engineer and moved into Semiconductor Marketing in Sunnyvale, CA. Susie had been in hospitality and was running a small Culinary School in Los Gatos, CA.
They met and within several months purchased the Cedar Gables Inn. Before they purchased the Inn they read the books and found out that there were three things that were required to make a Bed and Breakfast run successfully.
1. Someone needs to know how to Cook (That is Susie- She is fabulous in the kitchen and has started cooking classes)
2. Someone needs to know how to fix things (That is Ken- he can fix almost anything)
3. Both people have to like being around people (Ken & Susie both came from big families and love visiting in the Old English Tavern in the Cedar Gables Inn)
