when you come to the big island, DO go here.  DO spend some hard earned coin here.  this place is spot on.  i had the misfortune of randomly walking by here and then dropping some serious dough.

im a young professional male, and even i can appreciate this stuff.  the flowers here are just freaking incredible.  i spent a good portion of time just looking at the samples that you can touch, and i had a hard time inside of my head saying to myself "ok this is NOT real, this is NOT a real flower / leaf / orchid"  this lady has crazy skills, and just even walking around the small shop is an experience in itself.  but if you are working and you do have some money, DO buy something, i guarantee everyone that sees this will just say "holy shit, is that for real?  someone made that?"

i tihnk i'm going to go back within the next 2 days to buy another one, b/c wow, this is definitely an awesome semi expensive gift from hawaii for loved ones ,but wow these flowers are just incredible.

Holy shit!  There's a woman who makes orchids and other flowers out of a special flexible no-bake clay...and you would never know they aren't real.  The petals and leaves are startlingly lifelike and delicate, the painting is spot on, even the leaves correspond correctly with whatever type of flower it is.  Darunee Fasano, the artist, has won numerous awards, and deservedly so.  I had a hard time as I walked around the gallery remembering the flowers weren't real or plastic, but that each petal was hand-molded and unique.  I've never seen anything like these.  Freshly-made flowers hung over several screens, drying.

The gallery is owned by Darunee's son, who was there and gave us a good explanation of everything, as well as handed us some sample clay leaves to feel (the DO NOT TOUCH signs everywhere are near impossible to follow).  He obviously cares very much about his mother's work, and the artist herself actually came out, as well.  She was very sweet and quite personable, seemed happy to talk to us, and even gave us a startlingly fast demonstration of making a dogwood flower.

Beware: if this is the sort of thing you like, it may be difficult to leave without purchasing something, the flowers are just so incredible.  They will pack it for traveling, or you can have a piece shipped.
