I'm really trying to get away from eating fast food as much, but it's hard to do when you're at the Mall. But Cazuelas Grill is perfect for a nice meal while you are out shopping.
I love the decor and the fact that they have servers for diners. I was so pleased with the variety of items and the prices are reasonable. I had the Pesado Frito and the the portion was huge! It was so delicious and garlicky, but I couldn't finish any of my other food.
I can't wait to come back.
PS - they are upstairs across the hallway from 24 Fitness. -

It's all about the burritos here. I've never tried anything else on the menu because that's how good I think their burritos are. It can take a little while for them to get your food ready, but it's usually worth it when you sink your chompers into whatever you've ordered there.
And for you sheltered suburbanites who get scared off by the thought of going to Hilltop Mall in Richmond to get food here (OMG, I'm going to get shot with tortillas in my hand!!"), it's all good because this place is near one of the entrances/exits of the mall. Plus it's not near the bus stops, so you won't have to worry too much about being stared down by the hyphy ghetto creatures who populate the mall. However, you might get a kick out of eating a bunch of carbs not too far from the folks trying to lose weight at the gym just a few feet away.Listed in: My corner of the 510

Not your average mall joint! I stumbled into this restaurant one night back in 2004... I was SUPPOSED to work out at the 24 hour fitness there, but I had just gotten out of a Med-Surg exam and I was staaaarving... I figured I could suffice by watching the people work out while I ate...
My favorite things to order here are the Shrimp Burritos, Chicken Tortilla soup, Tacos al Pastor and the Fish tacos...
I love coming here because it gives off a homey little feel... I guess it helps that they are tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Hilltop...
Ladies, come eat here and pick a table near the entrance and watch the fellas work out... lmao! -

After searching Yelp for good places to eat near me I came upon an old favorite that we had'nt frequented in quite some time. We got caught up in the equally favorite Portumex and hadn't changed our venue up until now.
Cazuela's Grill is still as good as it was when it first opened if not better.
The server's are quick and friendly which both score high points with me.
We just got back from gorging ourselves on some of the best Carnitas I have had in a long time. Care was taken to remove the fat from the meat which I deeply appreciate. I hate biting into a Carnitas burrito and finding a big piece of fatty grissle in my mouth and the same goes when I order a plate of Carnitas. So with that being said Cazuela's Grill will score a high 5 points in my book. P.S. the homemade corn tortillas are out of this world delicious! -

I've worked up by the Hilltop Mall for 3 years, and this is my first time trying this Restaurant. The reason? It's in the Mall, and I don't want to get shot. But now, after finding this place, I'm willing to put my life on the line.
Finally, a Mexican food restaurant in Richmond that tastes great, is authentic, and I'm not afraid of getting diseases at!
On my first visit, I went with the old standby, and enjoyed a Chili Verde Burrito. Aside from a little bit of fat, this was a great item. The salsa bar is excellent, very flavorful. All of the corn tortillas are handmade in the back, which you can peer into from the front of the restaurant, giving you that added "what are they doing to my food" security.
In Summary: Mall bad, food great (but watch out for gordo), salsa excellent, tortillas fresh, reasonable prices, worth putting death on the line. -

I've been to tons of Mexican restaurants and this is by far my favorite in the East Bay. We found it because we used to work out at the 24-Hour Fitness across the way from it and it became our post-workout treat. The owner is a wonderful woman (who doesn't want to support female-owned businesses, by the way?) who works extremely hard and has an amazingly high standard for her place. She does all the hiring and keeps a close eye on the food and service on a daily basis.
I wish this place weren't in Hilltop Mall because I think it is missing an audience because of its location. But, if you want just plain fantastic Mexican food, brave the mall, it's worth it.
My fave? The Wet Burrito. Sounds so gross, but it's the best one around and is so huge that I can eat it for both lunch and dinner, even after a hard workout! -

This place is totally wasting it's time by being in the FOOD COURT at HILL TOP MALL. I can't offer a very informative review of the authentic Mexican cuisine because I don't eat meat but I will tell you this -- my beggie burrito was awesome. And unlike other places where eating a veggie burrito is an excavation project ("When am I going to get to the guac level?!") all of the items inside my burrito were thoroughly mixed up together. I liked that.
Also, they serve this AMAZING green sauce with their chips, in addition to the salsa. It is the crack-cocaine of green sauce. I wanted to drink it. My boyfriend, WHO DOESN'T LIKE ANYTHING, tried it and was hooked. I was honestly shocked, something has to be REALLY good for my boyfriend to like it. His quote: "This salsa tastes like water compared to the green stuff." -

The best Mexican restaurant that I've tried in California and I've tried many.
The posole that is served on weekends is one of the best I've ever had.
The thick golden tortillas are the best I've had anywhere. Excellent salsas. Very good jamaica.
Jathan M is right. This place is worth putting your life on the line for ... though after all the horror stories I've heard about Hilltop Mall, it seemed nice. -

Delicious! Perhaps the best place to eat in Hilltop Mall, but again, that isn't too hard to do.
I had the soft taco with steak and cheese enchilada with green sauce combo, and I'm still eating it as we speak. Authentic menu! Friendly service!

Pretty good Mexican food for a mall. I ordered 3 tacos. However, I failed to notice that the crunchy tacos are $2.75 instead of $2 like the soft tacos.
carne asada = 3 stars
carnitas = 4 stars
al pastor = 5 stars
If I were to come back, I would try an al pastor burrito. -

I'm hoping to up this to 4 stars in the future. I feel my minor disappointment in flavor was at the fault of the orderer (eh hm, me).
I was happily surprised to learn of this place (thanks Yelpers!). It really is a decent Mexican restaurant in Hilltop mall. And it is a real restaurant with a kitchen -- not just heat lamps over pre-made tacos & burritos. There was a woman eating a whole fish when we were ordering -- that's not a heatlamp kind of dish. -

El Sobrante, CA
The food is soooo good and the margaritas are cheap.
It's family run, and the woman running it runs a tight ship. She has asked me more than once about my service, and she's always friendly. I know that if the staff isn't cutting it, she lets them go because I almost always have a different server.
Everything from teh chips and salsa to the stuffed burritos to the ceviche is delicious, even the taco salad can't be beat.
It's clean, decorated nicely, and the bathrooms are always clean. They have Jarritos, Horchata, Tamarindo, and cerveza!
Aside from the fact that it's in the worst mall in history, it's perfect. -

San Pablo, CA
Home-made tortillas! YUM. I think that was the best part. The place was full of Mexican families on a Sunday morning, so that was a good sign. The service was quick and friendly.
Worst crime: fake iced tea. Totally unacceptable for a Mexican restaurant. I had the huevos divorciados, they were pretty good, but the beans seemed old (they congealed quickly).
I saw soups on other tables, those looked fantastic, I'll try one of those if I go back.
All in all, I'd say average at best, good for a quick lunch, but nothing to write home about. -

We were in the neighborhood to check out appliances at Sears. Being my first time at Hilltop Mall, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I figured it was in the middle of the day and the mall would be dead. Not only were there no shoppers, but half the stores are going out of business or empty storefronts. Sad.
Anyway, J was hungry so we came here for lunch. The chips that come out with the salsa were stale. I wasn't really hungry so I ordered the nachos with carne asada and an iced tea. J ordered a burrito. He seemed to really enjoy his dish. I don't know what I was thinking. Of course the nachos would come on the same chips that are served when you sit down. Stale. I wish I would have gotten something else.
Lunch turned out to be $22 + tax/tip. WTH?! That's hella expensive for three items from a mall restaurant, even if it's a sit-down place across from a 24-hour fitness. -
Review from Terry T.
I returned for a solo lunch and sat at a table with a view. Like my review below, I thought the chicken mole was better than most of the mole I've recently eaten. My table, with the view of all the weight lifting men at the 24 Hour Fitness location across the walkway, did not deter me from enjoying my high calorie lunch; the view actually encouraged me to take my time to savor my lunch.

maybe it was because i was really hungry, but this place was amazing, not over the top or the best burrito I've ever had, but it was amazing
i usually don't eat salsa, but for some reason the salsa they had with the chips was good, wasn't too spicy or too mild, but it was just perfect...i ended up finishing the little bowl they gave us with it =)
i ordered a regular carne asada burrito with everything in it...the grilled steak in it was delicious, parts of the burrito was cold for some reason, but it was just the sour cream, i'm not sure if that's what the sauce should do but it actually made it really good...
service was just okay, took the waitress a while to bring us our check, free refill of chips though so yay!...very slow, so it was easy to be seated right away...for some reason they have a daycare to the left of the registers, what's that all about? besides that, i'd come back, i should try their tacos next time -

Honestly... I don't really eat in the mall... especially this one! But I happen to see that it was Taco Tuesday on the way to the gym. HAHA. So after my workout, I asked my babysitter (my little cousin) if she would like to have some $1 tacos with me. I figured that I should feed her since she watched my daughter so I could get in some gym time. I was pleasantly surprised. You can order from the table (although i ordered from the counter) and they serve you salsa and chips while you wait. The chips were a little salty but not bad at all. The $1 tacos are like the street tacos that I used to order in san diego! Well worth the $1 in my book... only thing was that the quesadilla was $5 without meat! Geez~ I could have made my own at home for less.. oh well. You can't win them all...

Great hole in the wall type place. Food is tasty and reasonable prices. The guac is great! We lucked out the other day and also got to enjoy a live mariachi band while we ate. My husband loves their burritos. So far I've enjoyed both the taco salad and a quesadilla. Thank goodness for yelp reviews or we never would have found this place, we were just looking for something fast before hitting the road. The horchata was a little grainy/dry tasting though, so I probably won't get that again.

My wife and I joined one of her friends for dinner here last night. I gave my wife a weird look when she told me where we were going to eat. "A Mexican restaurant in a mall? That can't be good", I said. Well, I'm happy to report that I was very wrong. Perhaps it's an indication of the declining economic health of Hilltop Mall that the typical fast food crap places have been replaced by a family run restaurant, but if that's what it is, I'd like to see all of the malls around here decline. Cazuelas is really good. My first (and sometimes most important) test for any Mexican restaurant is their refried beans, and in that regard Cazuelas passes with flying colors. I had their chicken mole (delicious), and my wife had their grilled & marinated chicken (she liked it very much), while my wife's friend had a torta (she liked it, and it looked pretty good to me). The service was great and our waiter was very friendly. In addition, the restaurant and the bathrooms are both very clean. Their prices are quite reasonable and their menu is large (they also serve breakfast).
Cazuelas is located on the upper level of Hilltop Mall at the end of the food court near the JC Penny's and next to the 24 Hour fitness. -

I had the best fish tacos of my life at this place. My husband had the shrimp burrito, which was literally *full* of yummy shrimp. Service was super-friendly. Also, it's conveniently located right across from the gym. Basically, it's simple, authentic Mexican food executed really well.

Yes, I went there....5 stars at a Mexican restaurant at Hilltop Mall. I absolutely LOVE mexican food and feel like we have great options in the Bay Area and was pleasantly surprised by Cazuelas Grill at the mall. A customer recommended the place because of how all of the food was homemade. He is not a vegetarian but only orders the tortillas, beans and rice because they are THAT good. I ordered the camarones a la diabla and found them to be delicious!!! They had just the right amount of heat, right amount of sauce and the beans and rice ARE fabulous!! I had the whole pinto beans and Im pretty sure they put butter in those things because they are so decadent and rich. I never thought I would say that about pinto beans but they were fantastic!! The rice was cooked perfectly, the chips and salsa were delicious and I will definitely be back!! I would rate this in my top 3 for mexican food in the Bay and I know how risky of a statement that is, being the Bay of all places...but try it and see for yourself!

Can anything good possibly come from Hilltop Mall?
Long time East Bay residents would tend to argue no, but that is because they haven't been to Cazuelas.
Let me put it this way: if Cazuela's was down on San Pablo Ave within striking distance of gentrifying neighborhoods, all the cool cats would be raving about their "find" and making it their local standby. It's simply one of the best Mexican places I've been to in NorCal. For people who are car-dependent and/or have little kids, Cactus, Picante or Tacubaya with their atrocious parking and crowding situations are just too much of a hassle more often than not. Cazuelas is just as tasty, much more down-homey, and easy-in, easy-order, easy-eat, easy-out.
Menu highlights include anything carnitas, the tacos al pastor, and as previously mentioned, the best green salsa ever... the red stuff is also great. I haven't plumbed the depths of the menu yet, but I haven't had anything that was less than tasy and some things are to die for.
The service is WONDERFUL, so friendly and attentive. -

Two words: SHRiMP BURRiTO! They are they best. I just came here today and its was so good and fulfilling. The salsa bar is really good too. I especially LOVE the green sauce its really lime-y and spicy, just they way I like it. This is one of the few reasons I will come to hilltop mall. If you want fresh, quality mexican food, this is the place to go!

Not bad, though not as yummy as we'd hoped. The nachos were pretty good, and the corn tortillas are tasty. My husband wasn't wild about the chicken fajitas, though-- the meat was tough and fatty. Service was quick and friendly. We'll go back eventually, but it's not going to be a regular for us.

I camehere a few days ago with my gf. I decided to order the campechana cocktail since I've had that as a kid and thought it would be as good since it was 14.99 for it.i figure a 15 dollar shrimp cocktail would be packed with shrimp and octopus if it was that much. We waited for our food they served us chips and salsa, which was the only thing I liked, we got some jamaica which was decent. When the waitress came, she brought out these two cheesy oyster shaped plates with 4 shrimp, tiny chunks of octopus ALOT of onions, watered Down Clamato juice and brown chunks of avocado. I figured it would be good once I tried it.. Not the case! It came with 4 oysters on the side, they were disgusting. Some of the shrimp still had legs and scales on em. My GF despised it also ad we love seafood! when the check came it came up to 37.98! Holy crap I had never paid so much for a plate of nasty ass seafood the mean looking lady that looked like she just wanted to die on the spot added even more salt at the wound by giving us this card with about 15 blank squares and said if we got them stamped everytime we ate there we'd get a free burrito at the end! Wow! No way i would even attempt to get a second stamp here. DO NOT GET SEAFOOD HERE.

This place wins the award for best Mexican food place inside of a mall. The chips and salsa were quite tasty and fresh. My shrimp burrito was OK, good but not amazing. Also it seemed a little pricey, $13 for a burrito and a horchata? I think I may have been accidental over charged.

Review from Anx R.
El Sobrante, CA
I'd recommend this place to anyone going to the mall, but if you can go somewhere else, go to Los Cerros.
This place has its own salsa with its chips, which is never a bad thing. They give you a decent amount of salsa and the chips are good. I had the grilled steak burrito and must say that it wasn't that bad at all. The rice they used in the burrito made it extra good. The hot sauce that they had made it even better (I'm one of those guys that drips a little extra hot sauce on my burrito before each bite). The steak in the burrito was pretty good, too, though I'd say that there was a trace of dryness (possibly from sitting around for a while).
The only ding this place had, for me, was that the service was a bit slow, either because the waitress was slow or the place was under-staffed for it's current load. On a saturday afternoon, this place was probably a third-full and it took about 8-10 minutes for my food to get to my table after it was ready and waiting on the counter, and another 8-10 minutes for my waitress to break a 20. There were a couple of other things that took a while. I don't mind an occasional hold-up, but there was just too much latency for everything during the experience that required my waitress's help.
The other plus is that they serve beer here. Beer at the mall! I just had myself a soda, as it was a bit early in the day, but if I show up with company here next time, I might enjoy some... though there's not much going on at the hilltop mall except a bunch of shoe stores and strollers. -
Review from Mitch H.
Martinez, CA
EDITED Sept 19 2009
UPDATE: The same folks as below, we just ordered off the main menu for maybe a dozen lunches. Man what a difference! I personally ordered 3 crispy tacos, at a price of $2.95 each.
They were a complete JOKE! They had the basic taco shell Taco Bell uses (off the shell grocery store type), the kind you bake in a oven, and they had hardly no meat & cheese! So my meal cost $9.00, and was a complete joke. Of course the shells were soggy (even Taco Bell has learned to avoid this!), and there was a minimal amount of meat & cheese, with no onions & cilantro as advertised! I swear, people were laughing like hell at my meal! It was the noon time laugh! I showed it to everyone, and folks came to see it, laughing with me...
The other folks ordered burrittos primarily, a couple of combinations, and one chicken salad. That chicken salad was like $11.00/12.00, and it was a decent salad, but no where NEAR that money. Thye burrito crowd wasn't impressed either, at about $8.25 a burrito (supreme).
I have to amend my initial review, and tell everyone that this place SUCKED today! I would refrain posting such if I think they just had an off day, or whatever. But this throughout everyones meal...
Not just their sky high prices (which WE don't mind, if the food is close to decent), but this food was marginal at best.
With the huge Latino population in the area, I don't think these guys are gonna make it...the competition is WAY better, for maybe 1/2 to 2/3 of these prices. Maybe they justify their prices because they are in a Mall? I do not know...
So my overall opinion NOW if one goes there to order off the "regular" menu, be ready to pay PREMIUM prices for BELOW average food. But if your are seeking a large catered order such as I reviewed below, I'd say go fo it (however we DID stress in that large order, that *you'd better fix us up* or we will never return...and they did. But off thier *normal* menu, I say go somewhere else, for SURE!
We know we WON'T go back!
____________________________
I work for a large company located in Richmond, and we had them prepare chicken & beef fajitas to go for 30 folks, which we picked up (they even carried it out to our van for us). A mix of mostly blue collar workers with some engineers,
I have to say, everyone just loved it. It was a huge success. We requested them to provide a few different types of salsa and they stepped up. In addition to their standard salsa which is excellent, they threw in a hot green salsa, a fresh pico de gallo, and a habenero. All of the salsa's were really good. I'd really like to go there and check out the salsa bar mentioned here in previous reviews...
The portions were very large -- and everything was just perfect. They provided us with a huge bag of fresh chips, and beans and rice of course. And the cost was very reasonable (cost less than Chevy's, was much better than Chevy's, and gave us larger portions than Chevy's).
Their fajita mix had just the perfect balance of flavors. The flavors blended together very well, with no unpleasant after taste like sometimes experienced (such as too much salt, or too much seasoning for example). There was a minimal amount of grissle in the meat, but the meat had such great taste it's hardly worth mentioning.
It's not too easy to please this entire group, there's normally someone that isn't happy, but with this meal it happened!
We're definately going back. -

I've been here 3 or 4 times. The staff are always friendly, the food has been fast. I enjoy the taste, but I can see others have not enjoyed it. You can sometimes watch the corn tortillas being made in the kitchen. The Hilltop Mall is not my favorite attraction, but if I am there for clothes or something, it is nice to pick up lunch here. There is a pretty big dining area. I'd much rather patronize a place like this than any of the other food places in the mall.

El Sobrante, CA
This is a hidden gem in the least likely of locations. Who would think you could find any kind of decent restaurant in a mall, much less a mall in its waning years? And yet... this is the BEST Mexican eatery I've found in the Bay Area!!!
Ironically positioned in the mall across from a workout joint, the food here is so good that it easily overrides any guilt you might accrue watching all the fitness rats flexing and preening.
Nearly everything, including the tortillas and salsas, is prepared fresh and in-house. The extensive menu features all the usual items, and a few surprises: Bistec al Cafe, five different preperations of shrimp, even oysters. But it's the usuals that continually surprise; exceptional Chile Rellenos, Chilaquiles, Queso fundidos, and quite simply the finest Carnitas I've ever encoutered. It is crispy, never soggy or even particularly greasy, and clearly freshly cut from a roast and quick-grilled. To die for, as the kids say.
To be sure, not every item is perfect. We've had very prosaic Nachos there (they seemed a concession to mall tastes) and a disappointing Huevos con Chorizo. On the other hand, this is the first place north of the border I've had pancakes that taste like they do in Mexico City. Which is to say: dreamy!
One more hint: the flan is, again, made in house and is unique. Firm, creamy, incredibly flavorful and generously portioned.
When my wife calls me and says "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" I answer "Yes" and we meet up at Cazuelas. 'Nuff said! -

It really makes such a difference is a restaurant is family owned. The food is always fresh and delicious here. It's the best thing going in the Hilltop Mall (not saying much there). The food is fairly priced and the service is great. I have tried the pozole at least 6 times and I can't finish the bowl. The salsa bar is very good. The fish dishes are also amazing. Without a doubt this is my favorite Mexican restaurant.
