56 reviews for Cavalli Pizza
Review Highlights
So I just became a member of Yelp because I decided I needed to find good places to eat around the metroplex that are not just chains around the country.
I decided my girlfriend and I had to try Cavalli Pizza since all of the good reviews and we had just gotten into a "discussion" on what kind of pizza is the best around. Originally being from Wichita, Kansas, I am partial to Pizza Hut because that's where it started. She said iFratellis I think. I have never liked the taste of most other pizzas.
When she and I got to Cavallis, it made sense what everyone was saying about the atmosphere. It is a very small establishment, which gives a very local feel, which I liked. We got there about 1pm and the place was crowded, but it wasn't hard to find a table. There was a couple large parties that were very loud and the sound was amplified by the room, but it wasn't so loud that we couldn't talk.
After looking over the menu, I got The Dallas pizza and my girlfriend got the Margherita Extra pizza. The prices are very competitive with other pizza places. After only a short wait the pizzas were at our table and looking delicious. While only 11', they are small enough for one person, but still enough for that one person to have leftovers. Both pizzas were excellent. While the entire pizza was amazing, the crust was most definitely the best part. Crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside.
The only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars is because there are some pizza places around the cities that I have yet to try. So while this pizza was great, I can't give it 5 stars to say it's the absolute best pizza in the metroplex. I will absolutely be returning.
I'd heard all the ravings about this place (including the goofy award from the Italian government or whatever,) so Cavalli has been on my "to try" list for some time now. However, my plans to put their pizza to the test were always derailed for some reason or another. On this occasion, I needed to make a quick trip up to Fry's, so all of the pieces were in place.
First off, I expected something different than a little hole in the wall place in a strip mall, but I don't get hung up on those things. Especially because I saw that they served zeppoles -- a really authentic Italian dessert that I've seldom see outside of New Joizey. I had taken a look at their online menu beforehand (they don't have zeppoles on there,) and the "Dallas" pizza (pepperoni, sausage, meatballs) immediately caught my eye (especially because all of the "good" pizza places that I know around here DON'T typically have meatballs as an option for a pizza topping.)
The pizza was made fresh and cooked FAST, meaning that they used a really hot oven (good!) As a result, the crust was nice and crispy. In fact, Cavalli's pizza has what is probably the best pizza crust that I have ever tasted. The sauce was great (but not the best that I have ever had,) and the toppings were really good: The meatballs were great, the sausage did not have a strong flavor, and pepperoni is pepperoni. Taken together, however, there is no question that this is excellent pizza. My only dilemma now is whether this place is better than Saviano's. It's going to take a lot more visits to Cavalli to have enough data to make that decision, but that's just fine by me....
Bottom line: This place has great pizza. Go NOW if you haven't yet tried Cavalli Pizza.
I was fascinated - Verace Pizza Napoletana Association was started in Italy to standardize the process of making pizza in the authentic Neapolitan style. According to the VPN website, Cavalli is one of only four accredited pizzeria in TX, which has the most accredited pizzerias after Washington.
That status, along with watching him toss the dough and assemble the pizza in their open kitchen (with tomatoes imported from Italy!!) was an awesome pizza experience. All I tasted was a perfect balance of fresh and natural ingredients. I wish they they offered arugula as a topping, but that's minor.
To top it off, is Cavalli is only 5 min down the road from our house. I was feeling a little blue after spending the last two weekends in my old neighborhood in CA, then returning to Irving. Cavalli has lifted my spirits.
Dear Cavalli,
Last night was spectacular. You fulfilled all of my wildest garlic fantasies, and it's still seeping through my pores today.
NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA W/ GARLIC, MUSHROOMS AND SAUSAGE rocked the very foundation of everything I thought I knew about pizza.
Note: This is not a "sit down" restaurant, so don't show up expecting a romantic night out. You order like fast food, then they bring your order to your table. But who cares, the food is amazing.
Probably 3.75 stars, but trying to average down the over-hype here.
Quite honestly, I'm not sure if this is the best pizza in Irving much less DFW, like many are claiming here. I'd prefer I-fratellis over Cavalli's, and I'd still prefer Louie's and Fireside in Dallas. I've eaten at all the great pizzerias in NYC (Lombardi's, Grimaldis, Lucali, Johns, Artichoke's, Joe's, Patsy's and Di Fara's) - the crust comes closest to Lucali, which is a huge compliment - light, thin, crispy on the outside and chewy inside (ends) - nice flavor overall on the crust. The sauce was a little off for me - it almost had a canned/pregu taste to it - and I ordered the "Dallas" which was a margherita pizza with sausage, pepperoni, hamburger - the ingredients all seemed on the cheap/average end. I'll agree that the bread is probably the most differentiating thing on a pizza, and for that, they get a A-. But the rest of it didn't come together because of what tasted like cheap ingredients. You have the option for the more expensive buffalo mozzarella, which I declined. My friend got the chicken pesto sandwich, which was huge and apparently bread overload, with the chicken also being breaded. He gave it average reviews also.
What better way to end a day of eating fried foods at the State Fair than dinner at Cavalli?
Uhhhh....
Okay, so maybe going here on a stomach full of fried cookie dough (note: far superior to fried butter) wasn't such a great idea, but even the die-hard Cavalli fans who accompanied me admitted that it was a bit of an off-night for Cavalli. There wasn't much sauce on the pizza. The dough was a bit soggy. The toppings...eh. My pizza was supposed to come with basil, and I think I saw two leaves total. I didn't like the taste of the chicken, either, and the sun-dried tomatoes were few and far between.
A decent pizza, but I'm not sure it's worth the drive. I'll have to come back on a better day (e.g. one in which I did not already consume a week's worth of calories) and give it a second chance.
I will say this, though -- they pop those pizzas out FAST!
So I saw all these reviews on yelp and D-Magazine and got myself all excited about trying out Cavalli's.
I got there to take out their margherita extra pizza. After ordering I hung around to watch them put together my pizza. You'd think that after all the rave reviews there must be something special they do putting these together, but you'd be surprised. I watch the lady behind the glass zip through 15 pizzas in 15 mins. And all the time my skepticism kept growing.. THIS was gonna be the best pizza in dallas??
HELL YES!
I got my slightly cold pizza home and dug right in. Even when it's not right out of the oven, it's heavenly. You can actually taste wonderful woody flavor and with the simplest of ingredients, the result is stunning. Simply sublime!
Two big thumbs up to this place. I'm going there again and again and again. Can't wait to try out their potato topped pizza - it looked quite interesting. Even though their website doesn't mention it, they have 2 sizes - personal and large. If you're ordering for two, go for the large - you're not going to want to share the personal one :D
Oh, and their dessert pizzas look pretty interesting as well!
UPDATE: 10/09/09
I went back!! :D This time to dine-in on my favorite day of the week. Service was quick and friendly as usual but I guess my order was not that well thought out.
I went for the basic calzone with jalepenos and their bianca pizza. Both were kind of similar in that they lacked any kind of sauce. The calzone came with their tomato dipping sauce but didn't do much for me. The bianca pizza too was a bit lacking I felt. I would suggest avoiding these two.
waiting to go back for something else :S
This is by far the best pizza I've had in the metroplex! For the past 26 years, I have been sorely disappointed by the selection of pizza in the Dallas area. In fact, I thought I was a crazy person who just didn't like pizza, until I tried some in other parts of the country and loved it. Cavalli gave me new hope, hope that I can eat good pizza in my own hometown.
Cavalli is located in an unassuming strip mall in the Las Colinas area. From the outside, you'd have no idea of the treasures hidden within, but then again, I find that most of my favorite restaurants tend to be in strip malls. The rent is probably a lot cheaper there.
The pizzas are small and only come in one size. A moderately hungry person could eat a whole one. I tried the Diavola (sausage, jalapenos, bell peppers, mozzarella) and the Sostanziosa (mozzarella, beef, ham, fresh basil, ricotta). They were both amazing, with a crust that was thin, yet didn't fall apart.
The people working there were really nice and friendly. We called in our order, and it was ready for pickup in ten minutes. They also have a frequent pizza card, where you buy 6 pizzas and get the 7th free. If you come with friends, it won't take long to accumulate those six pizzas.
If you love pizza, you have to give Cavalli a try. And if you hate pizza, you should still give it a try, because it might just change your mind.
Crazy good! this place is amazing! Pizza usually does not impress me, and this place does an amazing job. Well worth the price!
You know, I really, REALLY liked Cavalli. I'm SO over the icky feeling you get from eating a huge, heavy pizza and I'm so glad the traditional neapolitan pizza movement is making its way around Dallas. I love the fresh ingredients, the fresh tasting crusts and the general lack of screwing around with high quality ingredients. Cavalli totally delivers on all points.
Eight of us met for lunch today. Driving from home, close to White Rock lake, I wondered what the heck i was doing coming this far for pizza... well, I totally don't regret it now. Cavalli was exactly what I was hoping it would be. Fresh ingredients, the pizzas came out FAST even though the joint was a hoppin', the service was great -- from the girl taking our orders to the pizza man coming to check on us and kindly asking if we'd ever heard of a website called Yelp (grin).
We got there at 11:30 and all eight of us were able to sit together at a big table... but if we waited any longer we might have been sitting all over the restaurant because it fills up quickly at lunchtime. I can say even though it is a trek from home, I'll be back. And hey, it's BYOB I have a reason to go at night now too!
Did a search for something to eat that was close to the hotel i was staying and this place came up. The pizza was ok, got the margherita pizza with pepperoni to go. The pizza was made quick and got some parmesan cheese and red pepper and was on my way. Got to my room and started to eat it. It was a bit salty, don't know if it was the parmesan cheese or the pepperoni. But it was good overall.
Excellent ingredients + quality owner who cares about his customers and his product. Cavalli pizza is right up there with the best pizzerias in DFW.
Cavalli salad: greens and pine nuts and something else... snuggled under a prosciutto yum-blanket.
Holy hell YES.
Irving salad with goat cheese, pecans & dried cherries, I'm coming for you... but I'm totally getting pizza too next time. Smelling it the whole while I'm eating something else - not again! That's why sweet baby Jesus invented takeout boxes.

Met up with some Yelpers for a lunch UYE and had a great time at a great place! When the first few of us got there at 11:30am and found an empty restaurant, we quickly moved a few tables together to create the mega Yelpers-only table, because we're a big clique on the Yelp bandwagon. By 11:45, the line at the counter was long and the place was packed, so good thing we blocked off a few tables!
I ordered the Margherita Extra and thought it tasted great on its own, but kicked up to awesome with some parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes sprinkled on top. The crust was thin and flavorful, the sauce tasty, the cheese creamy. It was a very light pizza, not greasy or heavy at all, so no need for a nap afterward. But of course, you can still take one and I won't tell anybody!
Anyway, if you know me, I'm normally a Yelp hater when it comes the popular places, and I don't give out 5 stars very often. So you gotta know, this 5 star rating is legit. It truly is the "perfect pizza" as described on the menus.
Thank you fellow yelpers for pointing this place out! I drive by it almost everyday when I"m staying at the nearby Sheraton. I wouldn't have stopped here if I didn't read these awesome reviews!
I phoned my order in 15 minutes before they were to close. I just finished a good workout at 24 hour fitness. Their recipe is protected by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana. What that means I have no idea, but it sounds fancy! I ordered a Margherita pizza with prosciutto and a side caesar salad.
I picked up my order, and I was off to my hotel to eat it (only 5 minutes away). By the time I got to my room, the pizza got cold! Note to self, eat the pizza on site. I don't blame the restaurant as when I picked it up the box was hella hot. Therefore, next time I will just eat in.
The pizza was very delicious, while the petite salad was aight. The pizza is light and very chewy. I will definitely come back sometime. The review earlier that mentioned the $5 special, I came here on a Tuesday and was charged the normal price.
Recommended and adding to my list of places to eat when I'm in town.
Now, so many reviews on this place already on Yelp, so no point to give a long-winded review.
After living around the Las Colinas area on and off for the last 2 years, I have pretty much giving up having good food. However, after finding this place on Yelp, I cannot believe I have not tried this place, when it is less than 10 mins from home.
Hubby and I went for the first time tonight and started with an order of bruschetta which is pretty damn good, and we ordered the Bismark to share, was so yummy that I cannot wait to try others next time we are back!
Since my hubby does not have a sweet tooth, I am planning on coming back again real soon for lunch by myself and indulge in the desserts that all look so delish!
This is a place that we will frequent from now on...
Normally I would write a lengthy review, but there is no need in this case. The pizza and price combined are probably unbeatable. The desserts are fantastic as well. It's BYOB. I'm going to stop myself there and say, "Go already!"
For Pizza, Cavalli is pretty much as good as it gets. Nothing else there seems to be too fantastic, but it doesn't need to be.
I always get the basil pizza with pepperoni. My wife and I split one, and got salads. Great meal for around $14
We went this past Friday and to be honest, I was burnt out on pizza, but the wife insisted on going. I'm very glad we did as I've found my new favorite place for pizza.
We tried the bruschetta and I have to say, it's the best I've had anywhere. It featured lots of tomatoes glistening in olive oil and fresh basil. The portion is large enough to be a meal by itself for one person.
The pizza was super-thin (I prefer thin crust) and everything seemed extremely fresh. I had the Ortolana (artichokes, bell pepper, and eggplant) while the wife had the Margherita. We could have just done with a single pizza, as large as they were. Excellent pizzas.
And, although we didn't order any dessert or know the code word (if you sign up on their Facebook page, they provide a code word for a deal), they gave us a large serving of zeppole (similar to doughnut holes, but not as greasy) with sweet cream. The did it "just because" and we were extremely grateful for such a kind gesture. These sweet, doughy belly-bombers were little balls of evil greatness.
It has to be said that even before the zeppole, the staff was incredibly friendly, fast with service, and knowledgeable about the food they served. We're certainly going back and I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a change of pace from pizza chains and overly greasy pies.
FYI, The menu shows that the pizzas only come in one size, but if you ask they will tell you you can get a larger one; which we did. I wasn't all that impressed with the one pizza we got, (it was the standard size)it was a vegetarian (can't remember the name) with green peps, artichoke hearts, and eggplant (1/3 each). Maybe this was just the wrong choice for me here, because we also got the "Dallas" which is sort of a meat lovers pizza. This pizza was one of the best I'd ever had. So we'll difinatelly be back and will get another Dallas and something else to see if it is hit and miss or just the one miss.
This is easily THE BEST pizza in Dallas.
We first heard about this place from friends whom we love dearly, but still find time to eat at Chili's and Olive Garden. They raved about Cavalli for a while before we were convinced it was a must try and when we finally ate there we were absolutely blown away.
Having been to Italy, this pizza is definitely the real deal! If you don't believe me, check out the certification they received from the Italian government, an organization that has nothing better to do than to help establish a group of pizza police to regulate the OCD requirements of the perfect Neapolitan pizza.
Whenever me and the wifey go we always order the Margharita Extra with Prosciutto (the owner's favorite) and the Lasagna and share both in half. My mouth is watering just thinking about that buffalo cheese and the perfectly baked pizza crust. All the ingredients are very fresh and even though you're eating pizza it feels healthy.
At first I was terrified the place might go out of business, but the last couple of times we went there for lunch there was a 30+ min wait for a table. Go for lunner or dinner if you can and don't forget about the Nutella pizza for dessert.
My bestie Andrew brought me to this place. It was a bit of a drive from Arlington but it was soooo worth it. I am so coming back. Perfect light crust, awesome sauce, and fantastic cheese. You have to eat the pizza kinda fast because the last few slices got a little soggy. I tried the Irving salad and it was pretty tasty. I really liked the combination of goat cheese and dried cherries in the salad. This place is definitely a keeper. I'll definitely be returning and getting my pizza on here.
Yuuummmyyy! Crust was chewy, ingredients were totally fresh. From their menu, they're receipe follow traditional neapolitan pizza standard which I guess means totally tasty. Pizza dough is salty and sits for days not hours. Toppings are top shelf and super fresh. Only thing I suggest is staying away from the saltier meats because the dough's already pretty salty. I can't wait to go back and try the other toppings!
Oh. Had the Pizza Baba, which is on their dessert menu. Salty crust matched the chocolate very well! Definitely worth a try!
I've been hyping this place up in my head forever now...I had to pick up Angela G. from the airport earlier this week and was pleased that I could finally get in a visit to this faraway pizza oasis.
Luckily, Monday and Tuesdays are $5 pizza day!!! So you start with a $5 base of either the NY or Margherita style (depending on whether you like oregano or basil) and then you can add on your own toppings at a cost, or you can go with their specialty pizzas (I'm not sure how the price works if you do that). For four of us, we got three pizzas (my guy and dad each had their own and me and my mom split one and had side salads) and it was plenty of food.
The cheese pizzas are only 660 calories for a whole personal sized pizza, so that's pretty dece (for pizza anyway), and not as much fat as you would think either (they had nutritional cards on the tables).
The salads were surprisingly tasty...dark greens with tomatoes and olives and a sweet balsamic dressing. The pizza itself had wonderful flavor, so it definitely gets 4 stars for that, but I didn't have a stellar experience with the crust--the outer crust is phenomenal but underneath the toppings it was pretty soggy...when I picked up the first piece, it went limp and all the toppings promptly slipped right off. So that was kind of annoying having to put them back on, or eat with a fork.
But the taste was really good. I would definitely return for the reasonable prices and tasty pizza anytime I'm making a trip to the airport, but I doubt I would drive all the way over there when I have Campania right down the street.
Yummmm...Preston and wifey brought me here on Saturday cuz we couldn't agree on what to eat, and who doesn't love pizza?
I was totally overwhelmed with all the ingredients and different cheeses. The lady was totally patient with me (even though I felt like obnoxious). I ended up ordering create your own margherita with roasted eggplant and ricotta. The crust was chewy and crusty and the eggplant was cooked perfectly and the ricotta just brought it all together in creamy goodness. We also had a caesar salad which was fine.
The atmosphere is fast food style, so don't go thinking it's a candlelight type italian place...just so you know.
Bumping this review up to 5 stars. I took a friend here for lunch today. He's not too big on designer pizzas, so we opted to split a pepperoni pizza. It was as good as the lasagna pizza I had on my last visit. I ordered the small Irving Salad, and it was great. It had goat cheese, dried cherries, glazed pecans and vinaigrette dressing. I love places that have semi-fancy salads. Cavalli had me at my first visit, but definitely sealed the deal the second time around. Now if Cavalli would open a location in Deep Ellum, I'd be set.

This place gets a lot of hype for being relatively new to the area. But I have to add my opinion that it lives up to it's expectations.
This is VERY high quality pizza. Probably the best I have ever had. If you are expecting a pizza that is going to make you feel like grease is oozing out your skin and like you have a bowling ball in your stomach when you are done (ie Pizza Hut and the like) this is not your place. This is light, fresh and spectacular food.
My wife and I were freaking out when we first went here. We ordered our pizza, sat out front with a cool breeze and enjoyed one of our favorite dining experiences in Dallas.
One note though, when I first was told about this place, I had this image of a quaint little Italian restaurant, with cute little pictures and herbs hanging from the wall. This was not the case. It is run more like a fast food place, order at the counter style. But do not be fooled, this place is serious about it's pizza. Definitely deserves the fiver.
Perfect. Epic. Wonderful. And BYOB. Can't beat that.
Cavalli has a wood burning pizza oven burning at 800 degrees (I asked), cooking their pizzas in under 60 seconds.
They make all their dough in house, fresh, in a giant mixer (again, i asked). All of their tomato sauce is made from San Marizano tomatoes, imported from Italy, and it shows in the flavor.
For an appetizer we had the caprese and it was pretty good. Nothing special on the actual tomatoes themselves (I would have liked heirloom), but the mozzarella was great. Then, based of a recommendation from the staff, we had (two) of the large The Dallas pizzas. She said it would be great for guys as it was all meat. It was awesome. It had a couple types of sausage, some peperoni, and some other stuff sprinkled in. Very, very good. Then for the ladies we got The New York which is basically a Margarita with oregano instead of basil. The oregano taste really came through and worked out great.
Great deal. For two appetizers, three large pizzas and a couple sodas feeding 6 hungry people we got out of there for $50. Had we known it was BYOB we would have stopped at the closest gas station for some beer or cheap wine.
Is this some of the best pizza I have had in DFW? Yes. Will I go back? Yes. Was it a total bargain value? Yes.
My boyfriend and I read about this place in D magazine which noted that it is the only restaurant in the area certified by the Verace Pizza Napoletana Association. We arrived with high expectations, and they didn't disappiont.
I've been back several times since, and have always enjoyed the pizzas. The caprese appetizer is also yummy. We always forget it's BYOB, otherwise we'd come with a bottle of wine in hand! It's a laid back atmosphere, and seems to be family-run business, as I always see the same staff working. A very nice experience. I love this place!

did i mention its BYOB? the pizza itself it pretty good. Its the dough that really sets it apart. The sauce was defiantly on my top 10. I tried the chicken pesto pizza:a bit too salty i woudln't get it again
pizza with potatoes and other bits: HOLY shit its good its not really potatoes rather fried scalloped potatoes
margarita:it was pretty good
chickin parmisian sandwich: DO NOT order this the chickin was dry as hell and the sauce made the bun soggy and doughy
Pizza, both of the main meal and desert, sandwiches, and salads. That's the menu. And let me tell you, more often than not, when they do one thing well it's usually better than trying to do a lot of things OK.
Cavalli is one of those places that does one thing well. Two basic types of the Italian fanfare in the NY style which is oregano based and the Margherita which is basil based. Personally I love em both but for those who aren't too fond of the sweeter nature of basil, be warned because the basil they use is super duper fresh giving a good dose of basil flavor. There are other types, even a few without sauce, but I would suggest start with their basic cheese pizzas to get to know the dough, the sauce, and the wonderfully fresh mozzarella cheese they make there in the shop.
I had a great first impression of the two pizzas. My only complaint really of the pizzas I got was the sauce seemed kinda runny, leaving the flavor a bit lighter than I'm used to. Maybe that's the authentic way and I've been spoiled by these chain pizza spots. Who knows. What I do know is that was the weak part of the pizza. The fresh cheese and the dough were wonderfully made.
I also got a chance to split one of their prosciutto sandwiches and that was a treat as well. Thin sliced prosciutto with lettuce, tomatoes (from Italy they say), slices of the fresh mozzarella, olive oil, and fresh basil leaves compose up what I thought was a really tasty sandwich. The basil really set off the prosciutto which by far were the two dominating tastes. That was a definite winner for me but again, those of you who aren't basil fans, I'd suggest something else.
I'm gonna have to try them a few more times before I can say which pizzas are my favorites for sure but I do know this is easily one of the better spots for good pizza in DFW.
Been twice now for lunch with coworkers. Excellent pizza and very different. I love that the crust is light. The flavors really come out with the way they cook the pizzas. I plan to hit this place at least twice a month because they have so many combinations and I'll have a hard time getting beyond the basic pepperoni and mushroom New Yorker!
Still five stars for me. I have been back many times and have tried the focaccia bread repeatedly and have now tried some of the desserts. If you have not had any of the desserts, start with the fried doughnut holes. Oh man, they are not as light as the pizza (since they are fried) but man are they good! They have a marscapone creme that they make to dip it in...sweet and delightful! This last time I tried the margarita di buffalo pizza. It was amazing. Much creamier than regular cheese, and yep, made from buffalo milk. I do think I'll stick to my usual from here on out, as it is an additional 3 bucks, but only for the recession, I promise (also, it takes me about 45 minutes to visit, so that is 1.5 hrs just to have pizza - gas is not super cheap!) Also I saw the owners eating the salads (something I just haven't tried yet), so they must be good if the owners are willing to eat them, right? Hopefully we'll get out to visit again soon and I can update with more delicious morsel bites.

We have been searching for authentic italian pizza for years in the US, with no luck.. All that changed with Cavalli. Not sure about naples, but it 100% taste like Rome. We have been all over Italy, and have eaten at the most famous pizzeria's (Da Baffetto's and Monte Carlo) in Rome. We never thought we would ever fine authentic italian in the US, at least of all Dallas.
We did try Campania (south lake), which is suppose to be part of the same Naples association as Cavalli. But the pizza was a cross between dominos and Cavalli. Something was just not right. Even the finished pizza looked nothing like Cavalli, or the pizza we have had in Italy. Perhaps we were there on a bad day.
Very good proper Italian pizza. And are they picky about quality? The first run of my pizza stuck to the oven so there was a small hole in the pizza. So they brought that one out to me so I wouldn't be waiting (I was settled in for the usual wait anyway so I'm not sure I would have noticed) AND they baked me another and brought it out, too.
The pizza has a thin but very tasty crust that is a little crispy, a bit charred on the bottom, and savory - no sugar in this dough, very little sauce but with nice tomato flavor, a bit of cheese (depending on what you order), and a scattering of meats (if requested).
I was surprised to see a sign saying their 11 inch margarita pizza (cheese and basil) is only 660 calories with 12g of fat. Very nice!
And speedy! I went in on a packed Friday night and had food in front of me before I had really settled in.
The dessert pizzas looked great! Folks around me were eating what looked like sweet calzones drizzled with chocolate. If I had been hungrier I would have had to try it.
Oh yea! Baby, this is for real (so when was the last time you heard/said that?!). Well, I'm sayin' it and I really mean it. This is the best pizza I've had in years! It's certainly the best pizza I've had since moving to this part of the world (except for the delicious thin-crust pizzas we started making at home 'cause we live in the dreaded burbs bordering on 'in the country' and can't find anything tasty around here).
So anyway I saw Carrie W's review the other day and was reminded of a review I had read in the Star-Telegram a few months ago about Cavalli's. Hubby and I hitched up the team and moseyed (how DO you spell that?) on over for lunch this past weekend. Cavalli's is located in a small strip mall consisting mostly of restaurants off Beltline and just south of the 635. It's easy to find.
Hubby and I split a Cavalli Salad and each had a pizza. I had the Contadina Pizza (mozzarella, sausage, mushrooms, basil) and hubby had the Parma Pizza (mozzarella di bufala, parma prosciutto, parmesan, olive oil). While the salad was fresh and delicious, the pizzas were absolutely to die for - thin, crisp flavorful crust and fresh delicious toppings. These are pizzas 'kissed' by high quality toppings. You won't find that 20-pound pizza here with 10 pounds of cheese and 5 pounds of greasy pepperoni (you already know where to go for that).
The staff was super-friendly and looked like they were happy to see us. That always makes a good impression on me (I am increasingly becoming annoyed by surly people - especially those who are taking my money). The decor isn't anything to write home about, but I found it pleasant. The tables are dark wood and the walls are a bright, happy yellow.
While Cavalli's isn't that far from my neck of the burbs, I sure wish it was closer (it's less than 20 miles - hey! I used to live in LA where driving 20 miles is like stepping next door!). Actually maybe it's a good thing it's not closer. Hubby and I would be eating there all the time and losing out on that home pizza-baking quality time.
To answer Pete M.'s question~ yes, they do allow BYOB!
And the Smores dessert pizza is TO DIE FOR. Loves it.
Location is a bit off the beaten path and the decor is nothing special, but it is the food and the friendly owners that will keep people coming back.
This is the best place. The pizza is phenomenal, and without question the best I've had in Dallas. Paolo is a great guy: he gave my family a free pizza because he claimed he wasn't happy with the first one (they were both equally delicious to me).
Pro tip: fork over the extra couple bucks for something with Prosciutto di Parma. Hard to beat.
I have to agree with the rest of the reviews. This place is the real McCoy. I ordered the Margherita, cuz I figured If I ordered something that simple. I should be able to taste the cheese, the fresh contrast of the basil leaves and the sauce that they use, and I did!
The crust is thin, crisp and fresh. Heck, they toss the pizza dough in front of you, you can't get any fresher than that!. I have to come back and try their other stuff.
I just came back from NY 3 weeks ago. I ate at Lombardi's the oldest pizza joint in the US, and Cavalli's pizza can definitely stand up to Lombardi's any day IMHO.
This is the best thin crust pizza, with the hint of real olive oil and oregano, this is as good as it gets.
A little busy around peak lunch and dinner hours, because people who know, go.
Give it a try. The ingredients are great and the price is reasonable.
