You love Halloween, right?  What other holiday has evolved from Paganism into a secular celebration of humor and escape from reality?  A personal expression of one's inherent tendencies through the canvas of costumery?  Children meeting their neighbors and being shown that there is kindness and hospitality in their community manifested directly by donations to them of Butterfingers, Milky Ways, and Sweet Tarts.  Throw in some eerie mystery to remind us that we don't understand all that is out there in this world yet.  The result is the mysterious, playful, evening romp that is none other than my favorite holiday of all: All Hallow's Eve.

Heading to Caufield's in the week or so before this wonderful holiday quickly became a ritualistic pilgrimage in my childhood.  Although I moved away years ago, I love to visit Louisville in October and often partake in a visit to the best costume/novelty shop in Louisville.  It is fun to see the place packed with adults preparing for parties and kids perusing all of the fun masks and make-up.  It is like a museum of human whimsicality.  Excitement is in the air and the animatronic killers popping out of their diorama are surprising evidence that humans still expend lots of energy on frivolous fun.  I think that is a good thing.  Go, have fun, and let your inner child play.  Just be sure to park like an adult.
