5 reviews for Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace
Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace is an architectural gem and a quiet paradise in the middle of the bustling downtown cityscape. Walking in is surreal, to imagine the history that took place here. It sits on land given to the Catholic Church by Kamehameha III after generations of violent suppression of the Catholic faith in Congregationalist Hawaii. Father Damien became a priest here. It was here that Mother Marianne Cope asked for the bishop's help to go to Molokai to tend to the lepers. The funeral of Joseph Kahahawai of "The Massie Trial" and Clarence Darrow fame took place here.
The parishioners of the Cathedral are amazing, always welcoming as if you were a long-missed member of the family! Through the extensive remodeling, the church has lost some of its original charm but still is beautiful. The church also has an amazing Samoan choir that is a heaven-sent complement of the Aeolian Skinner pipe organ, the oldest of its kind in the Western hemisphere! I love the indigenous flavor added to the ancient Roman Rites: ti leaves, ancient and modern Hawaiian musical traditions of oli and hula, wooden calabashes.
Tourists should make it a point to worship here on Sunday! It is a remarkable expression of Catholicism in Hawaiian fashion. The most lively Sunday service is the 9:00 am Mass.
My experience at this church was AMAZING!! The place itself was extraordinary as well as the church ceremony itself. I would have to say that this was the most festive church service I've ever been to in my life.
i was recently part of a tour at our lady of peace.
parking is directly underground from the church--it's the century square parking.
this church has many memories for me, since it's where my mom, grandma and i would go to mass when i was little enough to look cute in super shiny mary janes, ankle socks with lace trim, and pastel dresses with poufy sleeves and crinoline.
the cathedral itself looks pretty much like it did back then, except older and needing restoration. i understand from the current priest that (very expensive) repairs are coming. did you know that to restore just one of the golden angels on the ceiling to its proper glory costs $5,000? and there have got to be at least a dozen of them in there. the clock at the top of the cathedral is oahu's (if not hawaii's) oldest continuously working timepiece. in fact, our lady of peace (which is constructed of coral) is the oldest, continuously open catholic cathedral in the US? others have burnt down/were otherwise destroyed and been rebuilt or rebuilt with one wall from the original structure.
stained glass dates back to the mid/late 1800s. the altar has the bone of a christian from roman times, as does the tabernacle behind it. pretty cool for a house of JC.
This church holds a special place in my heart since it's where me and my husband got married. It looks small and simple outside, but inside is an ornate and elegant cathedral with lots of history. The people at this church also make it great. Father John Berger and Cantor Alika Cullen played a huge part in making our wedding ceremony so special.
I recently visited this church as I am on a journey to finding a new church since moving here in Oahu. I must say I want to give this one less star for parking and the church itself was hard to find, but that's not their fault plus I'd feel guilty or something so 5 stars it is! It was at a location I'm not quite used to because it was surrounded and buried between buildings. There was also some lady down the street distraught and screaming which I found uncanny. We wanted to walk around before the service started , but that lady scared me and I was scared for my daughter so we went ahead and went inside the church. It was beautiful inside the church, it was a sweet escape from the nonsense that was going on outside. The church is a way from where I lived, so I don't think I'll be coming here for regular services (not that there was anything wrong with it), but maybe only for special services like Easter and Christmas.
