I first visited the Cathedral when I was attending SLU up the road, my next door dormmate was a native of St. Louis-so we went one weekend to visit the Central West End. I was amazed at this place, you look at this huge church from the outside-but your spirit is lifted and your breath taken away inside. This basilica's dome is the 2nd highest in the world, St. Peter's in Rome is higher.

I recommend this highly on your visit to this lovely city. Even bring your kids as many people rarely get to experience cathedrals like this outside of Europe. The eucharistic chapel is full of gold mosaic, when you go in to say a prayer-you feel like you may very well be in heaven. I just can't say enough good about this cathedral. Many churches in St. Louis are so different and unique from each other-the old Cathedral next to the arch is more plain, but very midwestern and reverant. The college church at St Louis University is Gothic, has a cold yet distinguished look to it(and it used to have a huge font in the doorway.

Any professional or amateur student of architecture HAS to visit, truly amazing!

If you are into art or architecture, you might find this an interesting place... i haven't heard of another church of this size and beauty in the lower midwest. The mosaics seem to span every inch of ceiling and the scenes depicted are so detailed. There's a small museum downstairs with old vestments, blueprints and info on the making of the mosaics.

The gardens outside are tranquil and relaxing. There's a fish pond and perfectly manicured plantings.

If you are looking for a prayerful place this may or may not be your place. The beauty does inspire awe, but you should be prepared for guests snapping photos inside the sanctuary while services are not being held. I, myself, am not Catholic but was moved by my visit here.

What a beautiful church! I enjoyed all of the mosaic artwork on the ceilings. I can't imagine having the patience to complete the mosaics.

This place isn't too far from the Missouri Botanical Gardens, so you can easily stop by for 15-20 minutes.

Free admission. Just find parking on the street.

Holy Smoke!  This church is gorgeous just like the churches out in Europe.  I haven't been to one like this except when I was out in
London and Paris.  In London, the church Westminister Abbey has
tombs of the royal family and in Paris, Notre Dame is gorgeously painted
from the ground to the ceiling.  You got to go visit!  Don't forget that there's a bookstore and a mosaic museum there if you want to go visit!

I first visited the Cathedral Basilica during a field trip with my Catholic grade school.  We took one of the tours, and it was the only time my class was ever quiet and well-behaved.  I am still gob smacked when I visit, and in fact my eyes tear up every time.

Everyone should visit the Cathedral Basilica at least once.  The artwork alone is magnificent, although some would call it garish.  The tours are cheap and you'll learn a lot!  Go to a mass on Sunday and experience their wonderful choir.  It is amazing!

I was absolutely blown away by this cathedral.  If anyone knows me they know I have this incredible fascination with mosaics.  Guess what?

Cathedral Basilica of St Louis is home to the world's largest mosaic collection! The mosaics cover 83,000 sq feet of space, how amazing is that?  I can't even fathom the amount of time it took to complete all that work.  Mosaic art is just so awe inspiring, especially the pieces towering above you on the ceiling of the main sanctuary.

There are of course other things to see, I found the "burial chambers" in the basement a little bit creeptastic but all in all this is a wonderful tourist attraction.

I went to a Catholic school for kindergarten where I learned about Jesus and about what it meant to be Christian.  Every day, I would thank God when I woke up, before I ate my meals, and before I went to bed.  In first grade I went to a public school, but I'd continue to learn more about the stories in the bible on my own, because that's what I thought a good Christian would do...

Around 2nd grade, I decided asked my Dad why we never went to church.  Were we simply one of those families that didn't really bother with the Church?  It didn't strike me as strange, because my parents were always so busy with work.  I also always assumed that we all prayed silently, because that's the "polite thing to do."  Then my dad told me that we weren't Catholic at all.  My parents simply sent me to a Catholic school because it was cheaper than paying for a babysitter or for daycare if I went to a half day kindergarten at a public school.  Huh.  Go figure.

...and with that said... the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is absolutely awe inspiring.  I always get a strange sense of vertigo as I walk down the center aisle.  When I first looked closely at the mosaics canvassing the walls, I wonder of all the blood and sweat that has gone into this building, and also of those who did the menial tasks of laying down these huge slabs of stone and small intricate pieces of tile.  Did they truly draw inspiration from God to create such an amazing wonder?  Or were they simply working day to day with only food for their families on their mind?

If you are truly fortunate, you might walk in on someone playing music, be it a soloist on the violin, or a choir, it's amazing.

Now I'm not terribly religious or catholic, more so spiritual or something, but I can appreciate the beauty of things that are religious in nature. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis is one of the greatest feats of art and archetcture that is around the St. Louis area.

Besides the great stonework of the cathedral that is obvious to any person who walks by, inside is the largest collection of mosaics in the world. That's impressive. The mosaics were installed over the past century, starting in 1915 and completed in 1988, containing more than 40 million glass pieces. That's also impressinve.

The Cathedral Basicalica is a neat place to go and see. They offer tours which are neat and offer up some more information that you might not know.

One of the most underrated, family in town, touristy things in St. Louis.  I put this above the Arch and Brewery, behind the Botanical Gardens and City Museum.  The Cathedral is full of enormous mosaics covering every inch of the ceilings.  You can seriously spend hours enjoying the a/c and pointing out different things you notice, like a big Christian Where's Waldo.

This cathedral is STUNNING.  And I really mean the all caps!  If you're looking for a peaceful place to contemplate the big questions (like where to get Jimmy Choos for under $20!), you've found it.  Every nook and cranny is gorgeous and filled with art, especially stained glass.  I actually teared up just wondering at the sheer magnitude of the place.   No kidding.

Filled with literally hundreds of mosaics, you have to come here to truly appreciate it. When a friend first told me about it, I wasn't impressed, but I looked it up on-line and decided to lug my new Canon on a trip to the Central West End.

It doesn't matter if you're Catholic, atheist, Buddhist, Jewish, or any other ist, ic, or ish; you'll love it.

I finally made it here my senior year of college. I didn't think I'd really care about a mosaic collection, but this place is incredible. I don't know that I've ever seen a cathedral quite this pretty. The amount of work and creativity that went into the mosaics is phenomenal. Definitely worth a stop at least once.
