Review from Hosun L.

I've been looking for a good, casual place for fish and chips. I lived in London for a while, so I got spoiled on fresh fish and chips on a daily basis. When I was living in California, there was this great place in Sunnyvale I used to go to. But here....fish and chips are not considered a delicacy.
I wanted someplace more upscale than Arthur Treachers. I wanted someplace with more quality than a Red Robin. I wanted someplace that was more fun and less pricey than a Old Towne joint.
Catfish Lewie fit the bill nicely.
I'd never been to Haymarket, but dammit, I will drive as long as it takes to get good food. I remember one time when I was in LA I drove 90 minutes for this amazing deep dish pizza. Or the time I flew down from San Francisco to LA to get some ho-tuk. That came out to approximately $20/pancake.
But I digress....
Haymarket's a really nice, quiet place. It's hard to believe this is in Northern Virginia. It's the type of place I would love to live in one day. Catfish Lewie doesn't stand out. It's in a small shopping plaza with a couple of other buildings.
You walk inside and it seems like some cheap shack. The vinyl and decorations are straight out of the 80's. But you know, that's good. They're not trying to be pretentious.
You place your order at the counter and they bring your food out to you.
I got there at 12pm on Sunday, and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Maybe that was part of the reason, but I found that the waitress and manager were very friendly. They'd ask how we were doing, and check in on us.
We both ordered the fish and chips, and they came out in less than 15 minutes.
These were SO good. Let's start off with the chips. They're very similar in size and flavor to Five Guys fries, if you've had them before. Thick, but not too thick. Soft but not undercooked. Plenty of flavor without needing extra salt.
And of course, the fish. Oh man, the batter was delightful. It was crispy and crunchy without being burnt. But it wasn't so cooked that it felt like anything was burnt or overcooked. The fish tasted VERY fresh. Hot, steaming, great texture. The fish breaks apart very easily.
I love to drown my fish and chips in vinegar, so I will admit that I didn't appreciate all of the natural flavor, but I didn't mind at all. I don't usually eat all of my fries because I'm on a diet, but today, I made an exception.
Another reason to go here is that there's a huge gas station right around the corner called Sheetz, and their pump prices are 20 cents/gallon less than anything I've seen in Chantilly or McLean. So fill up your stomache and then fill up your gas tank afterwards.
My only complaint about Catfish Lewie is that it's so far away from me. It's about a 30 miles drive. If it were half that, I would eat there once a week, no lies.
Northern Virginia needs more places like Catfish Lewie, where they server great food at great prices and you don't have to dress up for it. -

Confirmed this place is closed permanently. Owned by Foster's Grill and they said it wasn't working out.
So sad to see what seems like several local business closing their doors. Sorry we never got a chance to try this place out. -

I agree with the first reviewer. Nice staff, comfy atmosphere, kid-friendly, and even more, the food is great! Each time we have been there, the seafood was so fresh, it was "still swimming"!
It's a nice addition to a revitalized downtown Haymarket. -

I stopped in here for lunch today. I've driven by the place several times and been intrigued by the name of the place.
So with curiosity driving me - I went in for lunch. The place is really cool! The decor reminds you of a gulf coastal/beach venue - with all kinds of yummy seafood offerings. There are all kinds of boating/coastal/nautical/tropical decorations throughout the place. One of my favorites was the large rowboat affixed to the ceiling!
I ordered the Fish and Chips - but not your normal Fish and Chips - instead - the fish was tasty fried Catfish! Coupled with a Barque's Root Beer and a side of slaw - the perfect lunch. The fried Catfish came with a side of creamy, delicious tartar sauce, and a wedge of fresh lemon, the "Chips" (in reality French Fries) were nice and crispy and lightly seasoned. I squeezed the Lemon onto the Catfish. I did find two small bones, but it did not matter - fresh, crisp, and hot. Fantastic!
The gentleman behind the bar who took my order and was serving was friendly, and came over to to ask me if I wanted the volume turned up on the football game that was playing (replay of last year's AFC Championship Game between the Indianapolis Colts vs. the New England Patriots). He also came over several times to be chatty. Neat place - I will be back! -

Yummy!!! The fish and chips were really good (exceptional for "fast food"). The batter is nice and light, more of a tempura style. The chips were what I liked best, though. They are small fried potato slices - nice and thin, but not as thin as an American "chip."

We have been to Catfish Lewie's two times in that past month and plan to go back again soon! The restaurant is never crowded when we go, in fact the was only one other family there both times. The restaurant is not easy to find from the street unless you have been there before or are really looking for it. The restaurant looks clean inside and there are tables outside when the weather is nice. Our favorite is the fish and chips, they rock! You get what appear to be fresh, handcut fries with your meal as well as very good, rough cut, freshly made cole slaw and hushpuppies. The fish is batter fried and still screaming hot when it comes to you. Catfish Lewie's is one of our new favorites!

Spoke with managers at nearby Haymarket Foster's Grille (same owners). There is no longer any talk of opening back up. I;m sorry to see this place close ... it was excellent seafood.
