Jay really knows her craft! She is straight forward(which I appreciate) and will tell you like it is. I made the terrible mistake of putting black dye in my hair, then changed my mind and wanted to lighten it again. When I made the appointment I forewarned her, and told her what I had done. She assured me that it wouldn't be a problem, but she would need to take a look at it and told me I should be prepared to sit in the chair for a long while. But to my amazement, I was in and out in no time! And EXTREMELY happy with the results.
I haven't had my hair cut by her YET, but I have seen her work her magic on other people while sitting underneath the hair dryer. I'll need to visit her soon and get my expensive shitty haircut fixed.
And if you've been unhappy with her, it may be due to your lack of communication.
This place is good, I found it from a friend's review. J is good at what she does and she is great to have a conversation with. She is awesome and she didn't charge much at all.
If you are in need of a haircut, check this place out.
Ok, so I really hate to give a bad review here, cuz after reading all other yelp reviews i really wanted to like her work and come back. first though, i gotta say that J's super nice and easy to have as a hair dresser. she doesn't make the whole ordeal awkwardly silent or impersonal.. she's really friendly and talks with you about life, not just how you want your haircut.
with that said, i have to say i wouldn't recommend her work. back in November of last year my friend and i both needed haircuts, so after yelping i decided to try catch 22 out and she tagged along. we asked for different hair styles.. i need a little more work since my last haircut was growing out really strangely.. but i had no intention of getting bangs.. they had finally grown out to the point where i could tie everything up into my pony tail. soo she convinces me that to fix my hair with a layered look, that won't grown out weird, she'd have to cut more layers, shorten the top of my hair even more.
now i understand what she was talking about but what i didn't feel was clear to me was that A) I'd have to have bangs again and B) I'd have to spend the entire haircut with my head pitched forward and she combed my hair over my face and cut layers from the front. it was NOT comfortable and NOT normal. i don't remember EVER having such an awkward stance for a haircut. so at first i thought that she just need to do this for me for the layered look. (I'll have to admit that the hair cut has grown out really well, extra star for that. but the discomfort of sitting with my head down and my hair over my face for 20 min.. yeah I'm not going back.... ) anyway, so after I'm done, my friend gets into the chair, explains what she wants.. and suddenly, she's in the same exact position as i was in the hair, head leaning forward, hair over her face getting her hair cut.
now correct me if I'm wrong, but did the rest of you who reviewed J have to do the same thing? is that just her standard way of layering hair? because honestly when my friend and i walked out, we literally had the same haircut, layers and bangs and all. hers was longer, but that's just not what we wanted or expected. remember, we didn't ask for the same thing, we had different haircuts in mind, which we were clear about. I've waited this long to review because i wanted to see how my hair grew out before i did, but even though I'm relatively pleased with the way my hair came out, i was not happy with the methods she used to cut it. if you don't mind.. sure more power to you. go get your hair cut.. well... razored off. she uses a blade to cut your hair, not scissors. but for me and my friend, we've both decided to find another stylist.
"Finding a good hairstylist is like finding a good man -- you definitely gotta date around until you find the right one." -J. And with that said, after finding Catch 22, I officially stopped whoring my hair out around Daly City and San Francisco. If you're looking for some good hair lovin', J is the person to see.
J, the owner and hairstylist of Catch 22, genuinely cares about her clients. She gives very honest hair consultations. She'll ask you what kind of hairstyle you have in mind and she'll work something out with you depending on your hair type and even lifestyle. (And by "lifestyle" I mean if you're a roll-out-of-bed-and-jet type she'll give you a heads up about a high maintenance haircut.) She's a woman of wisdom and I love how my hair appointments double as therapy sessions. Haha. No joke! And on a slight tangent, J is also funny. It never hurts to have an entertaining hairstylist. =)
Every time I step out of Catch 22, I always get compliments on my hair. Coming from a person who barely combed her hair before, it is definitely groundbreaking that I can style and maintain my hair now. I feel like a walking advertisement for her salon when people ask where I get my hair and highlights done. I've referred a lot of my friends and family to J and they always comes out happy with their haircuts. I even referred my best friend who moved to Atlanta and now a haircut/perm at Catch 22 is part of her vacation itinerary when she does come back to visit.
The salon has an overall welcoming appeal of a mom-and-pop-shop mixed with J's stylish vibe. If you get a chance, check out the accessories, jewelry, and clothes which are all on display and for sale. She also has an adorable dog named Twiggy who you'll find in the salon sometimes.
So, dear yelpers, save yourself and your lovely locks the trouble and trauma of those hit-or-miss salons in the area... Catch 22 is your best bet for great results and reasonable prices. Finding a quality man in Daly City may be a feat in itself, but finding a quality hairstylist doesn't have to be! Haha.. (sigh.)
Still Tagging a 5 star because upon my (not so timely) return, she still did a great Cut.
Update: J is SINGLE but has QUALIFICATIONS to mingle. ; )
Manicurist is now in the house!! Yay! I love V. (Vee?Vi?) I was uberly disappointed @ this one nail place I had to have cute nails to flaunt with my new Do. I was sooo impressed. Her free hand nail art is so clean. Yes, a tad more than you're regular nail salon, but shoot - for nails as flashy as she does, it's worth the extra couple of bucks.
I'm a follower. Getting my acrylic fill ins next week =) I have a couple of 'inspiration' nail art pictures I want her to do, so we'll see how that goes!
FYI - I didn't notice how clean and organized this place is. EVERYTHING has a home. How do I know? Each little thing has little colorful rocks that mark where it should go. Pencil bucket - lined with rocks. Business Card holder - lined with rocks. oh god. Makes me want to organized my clean mess.
I *heart* J & V. My new best beauty buddies.

This SALON IS THE BOMB!!! (hey that rhymes again!)
I learned of this salon from my Cuzzo - she was… Read more »
I don't know what was worst the fact that its in an ally or the service i got! I went in thinking it was the best place after reading all the YELP's but boy was i wrong!
First of all I went in looking for a light brown color and i walked out that night with BLACK HAIR! I she told me to just" wash it out!? and it will get Better " but who pays $140 dallors to just wash it out? anyways I returned thinking we could work it out with JAY but once again It was another episode. She didn't want to make any eye contact with me or even find a solution to my hair problem . The funny part was that she OFFER TO GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY !
Overall try at your own RISK! but you BETTER, BEST, Believe i will never set foot in that dumpster AGAIN!
Whenever i get my hair done its a hit or miss, so i figured i'd come here after all the wonderful reviews...I walked in 5-10 mins early to my appointment and still had to wait 20 mins to be seen. I was hoping to KEEP the length of my hair but walked out with shorter layers (which is OK since she had mentioned my hair was really un even) I asked her to fix my side swept bangs, she said that everyone really liked those bangs, but she didn't know how to do them...? jay is really sweet. I dont have anything bad to say about her.But i've been to better salons...
I found J.'s business card at a nail salon in SF and loved her cool hair. I took a chance visiting her with my messed hair do...The result is great. J. is patient, funny, generous. Her cut makes it easy for me to manage on a daily basis as I'm a "shower and go" kinda girl. And yes I got compliments from friends and co-workers. She's also very accomodating. One time I asked if she could fix my hair a week after my perm, she said yes, I came over and she gave a FREE haircut. Totally cool! Thanks again. You totally can do well in Hollywood, though don't leave us! See you in 3 months :)
Jay, I love my haircut. Thanks for fixing what my friend (who claimed to have worked in a salon down in LA) has destroyed. Sorry, I've been too broke to come back for a coloring..but I WILL be back for my second haircut pretty soon!
Thanks yelpers for putting this salon out there...it's crackin'!
This chick put up with my many annoying questions about hair care and all that good stuff. She has the cutest dog in the world! & her salon is soo homey, kinda like a black barbershop that you see in the movies.
BTW, if you call to try to make an appointment and no one answers, she's probably workin' on someone else's hair, so just leave a message.
I have been with Jem (Jemmelee aka J) for almost 10 years now, my hair only get pampered with her fabulous hands! J is the "BEST", I have brought all my girlfriends there and they all following my footstep now.... I am from Tahiti and I have been leaving in SF since, when my family visits me, I bring my niece to her, so they can have the experience of getting their hair done by "J"! They love her!
She makes you feel very comfortable, her salon is so nice, clean and very stylish..You already have a good impression of how she takes care of her place, that tells you already that she will take very good care of you as well.. Men or Women, they all leave her salon happier and very very confident!
For those who had bad haircuts or not so many good hair colors results after a visit at either an expensive salon or just a regular salon, I can guaranty you that "J" will make you leave her salon with a smile on your face and a fantastic color with style! People will look at your hair and will ask you where did you get your hair color? or where did you get your hair cut? I am telling you that is the reaction that most of us get from people that see our hair style!
She is a wonderful hairstylist and a wonderful mom, she makes sure that her girls are happy and for her clients as well. She is always flexible to accomodate you if needed! I am very proud and fortunate that I found Jay 10 years ago, she is sincere, honest and knows whats best for her client and for her friends! If you want to have a celebrity haircolor or style, she will tell you if that will look good on you or not! She will also tell you that you can make your own style and that you will love it when she is done with you! i know cause I trusted her with my hair and i still do..
She is a beautifu,l talented and extremely remarkable stylist! i love her
She takes care of herself and if you have the chance to meet her, you will see what I am talking about!! Catch 22 Salon is the place to go and get your style on!!!
If you are looking for a consistent hair stylist and keep her for years, please be my guest and visit her or call her for your next hair cut or you need new highlihts, call J and you will thank me!!!
i just got my hair did.
i love jay! she's hella funny. she did an excellent job highlighting and cutting my hair. i'll be back.
After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to visit Catch 22. I was in desperate need of a new place to get my haircut since STRUCTURE destroyed my hair. J. was honest with me and said there wasn't much that we could do until it grew out. She managed to shape my hair and it looked fab unlike the floppy mess it was before. I've been getting a lot of compliments about my hair. I will be going back to J. in six weeks. She's awesome.
This place is awesome, I found it from a friend's review (Thanks Lauren!!). J is good at what she does and she is great to have a conversation with. The experience reminded me of that movie, BarberShop. If you are in need of a haircut, check this place out. I honestly didn't know what to expect. She was awesome and she didn't charge much at all. I'm definitely going to visit J soon!
I moved out to Pacifica from Hercules, CA in the summer. I had been going to the same hairstylist for 4 years and really loved how she did me up. I couldn't afford to go back and forth from the East Bay and SF area every 6-8weeks to get my highlights retouched, so I asked my friend where she goes.
That's how I found Miss J! I was a bit apprehensive and scared because I'm so particular about my hair, but she really took the time on my first visit to consult me on what I wanted the end result to be and how I can achieve it. She told me that if she couldn't do something she'd be honest and let me know. She's very confident, a complete professional and totally cool!
I've had 3 visits with J, and I must say, I always get compliments on my hair and hair-coloring. I love how soft and easy to manage she makes my hair. I love my hair after every visit! She's so chill and honest and fun to talk to, it really makes time fly.
i've been getting my hair cuts and color with Jay for a little over a decade now.
she's truly the best in the Bay! I get compliments from people off the streets every time she does my hair. On several occassions, people have even gone in there asking for the same exact style.
I'm a flight attendant and I care very much about my appearance and even our guests and my peers just love how my hair always looks.
I go to Jay never afraid to leave her with the best judgement on how to style my hair.
Jay is a great stylist but is also a very good, genuine, trustworthy, down to earth friend..
If you're looking for someone who will cut good hair but also tell you her honest opinion on what she thinks won't work, try her out... appointments only though folks !
You can have it your way, but don't get crazy with no complicated order! Bon Qui Qui will CUT you good!
I was referred to http://yelp.com and never knew about it!!!! Looked up Catch 22 Hair salon..because...that's where I go!!
Anyhow, I read the last 2 comments about this salon and I'd have to TOTALLY AGREE!
Jae's been doing my hair for more than 6 yrs. I've been looking for someone who's honest, sincere and won't just cut your hair..and take your money. Jae really does care about how you look. I came into her shop wanting a perm. She looked at me..and said..no...what about highlights. I said..I don't know..never done it before. She said..no...let's try this..she cut and highlighted my hair..and let's say..I had PLENTY of compliments from EVERYONE. She did wonders with my hair..gave me a new look. I remember she once told me..I do not want you to leave my shop and come back to me and say..Jae..I dont like my hair..can you do something to it? AND SPEND money on it again. That's one thing I like about Jae...she'll give you her two cents....on what looks good ...and what she recommends..not because..of money ..because she really does care and she wants you to come back...because you're happy with what she's done to you.
I would recommend her to everyone I know....I referred her to 2 of my best friends already and they love her!
Some people might complain about the cost...but..I know there are plenty of other salons out there..that'll do whatever you want to your hair..even if you're looking...kinda off..with your new style...and just collect funds at the end.
When I need a new haircut..new style,...and just ME time..that's where to head out to..Catch 22 Hair Salon.
