This Coffee is Excellent. The Roast of their various types are Perfection! This is the only high-light to my move back to the East Bay, and this place knocks a lot of Large Corporate chains out the box. If you live in the Area, or are around during their business hours try them out! They have an extremely friendly staff, vibrant environment.
The Owner comes in from time to time and also loves to make his customers feel welcomed, and I do appreciate that. He has even answered questions we've asked about roasting the coffee beans, and what not! Really nice guy! I hope to see more businesses like this revamp San Pablo Ave, in Richmond, CA. Cause truth be told, Other than this place that looks very modern and maintained. It has WiFi too if you need it.
Great Coffee though, Terrific Cappuccinos, and their Mexican Mocha Iced on a Warm day is Divine! -

wow! so happy that this little coffee joint exist in this hood. From now on, I can have something more special than Starbucks and Peets. I tried their Mexican Mocha today, I have to say I'm not a fan of spice but this is not bad. The thick foam on top with decorative leaf is very pretty and tasty. I thnk I'll try Mocha or their regular coffee next time b/c i am not too big of a fan for spicy coffee. Just that everyone raves about it so I gave it a shot for my first trip to this little place.
I've also tried their cranberry scone. Taste is good, but it was on a dry side. I'll come to try other stuff for sure. And the vibe of this little joint is great. I feel like I'm in Berkeley, not San Pablo. -

Fantastic place!
The Mocha is amazing! (I don't even like Mochas, but god damn, god damn!)
Great homemade pastries!
WiFi!
Good breakfast!
Roast their own beans.
Decorations in my coffee! -- I got a pretty double sided leaf!
Great loose-leaf tea! (the white tea is unbelievable!)
Outside seating.
Adequate parking!
Near Freeway!
I'm tempted to dock them .25 of a star because they play 90s alt music, but there's no way I could ever get myself to do that.
Everyone here is super friendly too and all involved in the community around. Love. Love. Love. -

The Lola drip coffee was all right, nothing too memorable, but the breakfast sausage English muffin was substantial. The place was clean, the wi-fi worked, and the staff was friendly.
Worth a trip from El Cerrito at rush hour? Not really -- but it was nice to check it out. -

Came in today as always GREAT service.
My Mexi-Mocha was oh so good.
I discovered today they have a prepaid card(giftcard); that tracks your coffee, when you purchase 10th coffee the next one is on them!
just a little perk I tend to take advantage of thought would share.
cheers!

My sister and I just completed a race in Point Pinole and decided to try a nearby cafe. As we're driving down San Pablo Avenue we're wondering where the heck are we and did yelp stir us wrong? However, soon enough we found this gem of place nestled amongst some not so memorable buildings.
For starters I loved the decor, even though it was quite small...only 4 or 5 tables. The vibe was chill, the baristas were awesome and the coffee was delish!!
To the owner: thank you for opening such an awesome cafe in Richmond!! Next time we are out that way we will be back & we will definitely try some of the baked goods!Listed in: My favorite places to get…

This is the best coffee around. I purchase Tres Amigas for my guests at "The Annex Short-Term Accommodations." They all rave about it. I usually order a soy decaf latte while I'm there. It is perfect and beautiful. I also enjoy their banana cake! Tim has created community where none existed.

Awesome coffee and beans in a desolate Starbucks-filled area. The chorizo breakfast burritos are also a treat while they last.
I gotta take a star off for the 16oz "large" though...just doesn't quite do it for $2. They'll fill up your personal mug for the same price - but I'm often left with 'almost enough' Jo
[EDIT] secret menu! 20oz "Dub" and 24oz "Chalice"! 5 stars -

Having worked at Peet's for a year, I had become jaded; the coffee world became a dark, depressing place. Every customer saw you only as someone preventing them from getting somewhere on time, and their latte was never flat enough.
I have since tried my best to hunt down the great coffee places around the bay area and the world, still holding on to my child-like innocence and hope for coffee.
Catahoula held my hand, told me everything would be okay, and said "we will get there when we get there; just enjoy the ride". The staff actually cares about the success of company, and they enjoy and are excited about their products. I recommend it to all my friends, and have gone back over and over again (sometimes twice in a day). Go there. Be merry. Call you mother. -

I just read all the glowing reviews and I ran over to grab a coffee.
Unfortunately I did not sip it til I was driving away.
I ordered a decaf coffee, and it is vile and the worst burnt tasting stuff, I had to just throw it away!
I also hoped to get a a croissant but they do not have any FYI so that was also a bummer. I love Cafe Trieste in Berkeley and I was hoping this place would be like that but no such luck.
I would not go back there again, very disappointed! -

Without a doubt the finest coffee in the East Bay Area.
The staff are attuned to the atmosphere; they know when to change the music, when to chat you up or let you be; a rarity in food service. They are friendly and knowledgable, too. -

Great coffee, awesome burritos, muffins, and friendly service. Everything has been wonderful and although I haven't it would be a great place to sit and read. It's pretty much everything you want from your local coffee shop. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is there hours. I would love it if they were open longer.

I absolutely am falling in love with this place....I have went there three times this week and I know I mos def will be there again tomorrow. First time I tried a drip/espresso mix and that was good. The next time I tried a mexi-mocha....OMG the best mocha I've ever tasted, I think its going to be my regular......My cheese bagel was good too.
Thanks for some real not punk ass coffee :-) -

Love, love, love Catahoula Coffee Company :)
I live around this area and I'm so glad that I've found a cozy spot where I can get good coffee for a good price with a good atmosphere.
I've been here twice and even though I don't have a "usual" yet, this place sorta made me feel like I was in an episode of Cheer's because everyone said "Goodbye" and "Have a nice day" ..maybe I'm a sucker for politeness..but this place is my new spot! -

Let me just say that I was biased in favor of this place before I set foot in it, as I have a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. I love the fact that this place has photos of other Catahoulas (including my friend John's dog, Beauregard) hanging on the wall.
I buy a bag of Lola blend every month from Catahoula Coffee, and it just blows all other coffees out of the water. A coworker gave me a bag of Starbucks Christmas Espresso for Christmas, and blech!!! I immediately went back to my Lola. It smells and tastes soft and sweet. I wish I could eat the grounds with a spoon, they smell so good. The staff are always super friendly, and I love getting my free cup of (very strong) coffee when I buy my beans! -

The Best coffee anywhere in the East Bay for sure. Mm. Soo good. You can taste the love and care that goes into making such great coffee. On top of all that, the staff is super friendly and down-to-Earth. The store has a comfy, community feel to it. Just walking in for the 5 minutes to grab a cup brightens my day (even before drinking down their intense brew)!

El Cerrito, CA
I am new to the world of coffee snobbery and I am proud to say that Catahoula is one of the first places to pop that cherry.
They provide a wide variety of beans that keep me coming back to test. As they are always fresh, the grounds bloom with exuberance when they are splashed with flavor extracting 200 degree goodness.
I cannot give my final verdict of this place until I bring my coffee geek friend to try an espresso shot, but for now I give it a strong 4-stars.
I have communicated by email with the owner, Timber, and he seems to care about this business. Although I have not seen him in shop the half dozen or so times I've visited.
The young baristas are pleasant, engaging, and skilled. But, I still haven't been able to chalk up a serious discussion about coffee just yet. I asked one of them what is best for drip coffee and he suggested Rwanda but didn't really tell me why, or couldn't tell me why. That being said, I just poured myself a cup of Rwanda using my Chemex and it has been my favorite so far compared to Lola and Costa Rica (for drip).
So, another reason why I can't give it the full 5-stars, but I think part of it is my own fault for not knowing what kind of questions to ask or how to talk like a true coffee snob. I'm just using my coffee cupping experience at Blue Bottle as a barometer of what a true coffee geek is.
And that is someone who makes you feel slightly awkward, but in a good way. I think. -

I live in Ohio and I have to buy the Lola blend via mail or beg my sister to bring a few bags with her when she visits. I simply can't do with any other coffee. This stuff is the best!!! So nutty and mellow tasting.
They are very quick to ship purchases too! :) -

Richmond, CA
Love it, great people -- BUT. they need to pay more attention to making a good espresso drink. A 16oz large latte or cap is $4. I don't mind paying a premium price, but if I do, I want a latte, steamed milk with some nice foam. Not a shot of espresso with flat medium warm milk. Sometimes it's fine, but often the barrister is not focused on the drink being made. So, consistency my issue here. Could also use a better display & mix of pastries instead of a pile of mixed scones & muffins wrapped in shrink wrap for ...how many days?? The bagels seem like 'bread' bagels like you get at Safeway. I think they could also boost patronage if they used some of the outdoor space for seating & service on nice days. Currently only a couple of tables on sidewalk right on the boulevard. Indoor bar area could also provide some seating, but there were no stools at the bar.
Otherwise a great cozy local spot with good quality coffee beans, friendly folks, and some great memorial photos of the owners Catahoula hound. -

This coffee shop was my ray of light in a day marred by the miserable courthouse around the corner. The staff is fast, efficient, and knows when to start a conversation or when to leave you alone. The coffee and tea is superior and the food is excellent. They roast their own coffee, and so if you sit for a while, you catch the sent of perfectly roasting coffee beans waft through the air. Seth and Ricky are Aces in my book.

Ok it's Friday and I stopped of to get my usual cup of coffee and Alfredo hits me up about trying a new drink. So I agree to try it. Alfredo knows coffee. He calls it THE CUR. Coffee, Root Beer and a little half and half on ice. Folks you gotta try it! It is HELLA good!
You start with some great coffee (and they got that here) and some good root beer, why didn't anybody think about this before? The root beer gives it a little different robust flavor. It was perfect for that warm Friday afternoon!

Review from Tiffany C.
Los Angeles, CA
As an avid fan and frequent customer of Starbucks and coffee shops in general, Catahoula puts them to shame with its great-tasting coffee. I have had Blue Bottle in SF and Intelligentsia in Venice, and Catahoula is definitely just as good, if not better. I can't believe I could find in my neighborhood a wonderful café with quality coffee. As we all know, Richmond isn't known for great coffee.
Unlike Starbucks and other chains, they don't use or even have other types of flavored syrups besides Hershey's chocolate sauce. I guess the reason is to let the coffee/beans be the star and shine, which it certainly did in my drink. The mocha I had was rich in flavor and velvety in texture. Strictly on the quality of its coffee, it has earned a 5 star in my book deservingly.
But with the pastries, which are located in the back of the store where you probably won't see it if you don't ask, is a different case. So when I saw the vegan pumpkin whoopie pie, I knew I had to try it. I mean, who can resist a pumpkin whoopie pie?! And it's also vegan?! Not that I'm a vegan or anything but putting "vegan" in front of anything makes me think what I eat is healthier than the non-vegan versions (probably true, right?), especially when it comes to sweets. But I was slightly disappointed after my first bite. I think I prefer a spongier cake texture and a stronger presence of cinnamon in the whoopie pie. I probably won't get it again since it's the same price as the mocha, which was $3. I'd rather spend that on another mocha or drink.
It would be great if they have some type of frequent customer program or card to reward patrons! -
Review from Krista C.
What would you expect to find in this part of Richmond? Crack? Prostitutes? A bullet in the head from a drive-by gang shooting? Artisanal microroaster of quality coffee? Needless to say, I don't usually venture out to this side of San Pablo Ave, but I will go to great lengths for good coffee.
I ordered a macchiato made with the Lola blend espresso. The shot was very good--bright, acidic but not sour. I was also surprised that the barista prepared the traditional macchiato (one with no more than a teaspoon of milk and a dollop of foam) over the more ubiquitous 1:1 ratio of milk to espresso. That's fine--it has been a while since I have had an old fashioned macchiato sans latte art. It also gave me an opportunity to experience more of the espresso with less of the milk, as I would much rather have a great tasting espresso over a pretty looking rosetta design any day.
However, I thought it was strange that the macchiato was served in a cappuccino sized cup rather than an espresso sized demitasse. It wasn't significant, but I did notice that it cooled down quite fast, likely due to the larger surface area resulting in more heat loss.
Their version of the Mokka-Java blend (just roasted that same day) that was brewed using an Aeropress was fruity and mellow at the same time with a very clean finish.
I would go back. But I would probably be packing heat.Listed in: Coffee Culture

A great place. Their coffee is excellent. Among the best in the Bay Area. And free refills! What!
I used to work at a charter school in Richmond. While teaching summer school, I would wake up early to go grab a cup of coffee and watch the World Cup that they played live. So friendly, so fun! Thanks Catahoula! -
Review from Lee H.
I've been meaning to try this independent coffee shop for over a year now. Unfortunately it's not on my way to anything so I usually forget I want to go there. Each time I pass by the place I think about two things; the Catahoula Leopard dog my friend owned years ago and the great restaurant in Calistoga named Catahoula that is unfortunately long gone.
On a recent morning I was thinking about dogs and Calistoga restaurants and remembered that I should check out the third Catahoula on my list: the coffee joint.
I stepped in and was greeted by cheering fans. No, they weren't happy to see me, they were watching a World Cup soccer match. Fantastic, I love the community a World Cup viewing party imparts.
I ordered a Mexican Mocha, took a seat and took in the scene of regulars dressed in work clothes as well as soccer jerseys. The place was packed by any standards, let alone a weekday morning after the workday has already started for most people.
My mocha was great, but beyond that, I was happy to finally experience the cheery coffee shop on a somewhat depressing stretch of San Pablo.
See you again, Catahoula! -

El Cerrito, CA
This place is a godsend. Great coffee, diverse, friendly, and down-to-earth people, both customers and workers. You can walk into Peet's in Berkeley and not get a smile if you're not a regular, but here, don't expect to get much work done - people actually interact here. I was the only one on a laptop the entire 1.5 hours I was there despite free unlimited wireless, and I learned my lesson - next time, I plan to leave the laptop behind and enjoy the company. That's not to say I was made to feel uncomfortable while on my laptop, but I WANTED to talk to people, because they were warm and ingratiating.
When I told them this was my first visit, they gave me a free latte - the strongest I've ever had, and one of the best. I ordered another one - a Mexi-Malty Mocha ($3) that put other mochas to shame. It's very strong, though - be warned. I would go for the coffee alone, but all of the other plusses mentioned above makes it a no-brainer.
Only drawback is that it's tiny. But people talk more because of it, so that's a plus. -

The best coffee in Richmond, if not some of the best in the whole Bay Area! Tasty tasty yum yum. I found them at the Kensington Farmer's Market and was delighted to discover that they were only a mile away from my house! They converted me from Peets with their Butkus, and from there I moved on to try Lola, 3 Amigas and their Sumatra. The staff is friendly and their treats are yum. It feels like a North Berkeley cafe in Richmond. Amazing.

so yesterday I get a text that says "did you know Catahoula has vegan whoopie pies?" That was enough to get me to FINALLY to return to this cafe (more on my 1st visit below) & give them a try. All I have to do is put my car in neutral & roll down the hill to get to Catahoula, it is a little ridiculous that this is not my "go to" coffee joint.
The aforementioned whoopie pie was pretty good. The kind gentleman that helped me said they have all kinds of vegan love, if I am not in the mood for whoopie (hahaha). I also had an amazingly delicious & beautifully presented soy latte (I am a sucker for the flowers drawn in the foam!)
I came here once before, when they first opened, on the advice of a neighbor. She highly recommended the banana bread. Sadly, it is not vegan, but my kid loved it. I wanted to get a latte, but they were out of soy milk so I left empty-handed...
my hubby is a total coffee snob, he likes the beans here.
I think they have a coupon in the Eco Metro Guide.
I'm sure I'll be making this a regular stop! -

Really great, freshly roasted coffee beans and friendly answers to newbie questions. I shared with my "coffee snob" friends and they approve too. A bit out of the way and I wish they had more kid-friendly pastries for my toddler. I had to stop by Starbucks on the ride home for a chocolate chip cookie!

If you got some time to read this:
I have 700 pages of patho/physio to read before a mid-term. I just moved to richmond a couple years ago so I figured out that there are great places to eat and shop but they are just kind of spread out. Yelp really helps. I check out this place on yelp and it has like 100 reviews Woohoo!
The man who works there is really nice. I said "mid-term" and he whipped up a mexi-mocha with about 35% espresso, and during the process you never hear a "PUMP, PUMP, SQUISH, WHIRRRR" like you hear at the place on every downtown block in S.F.
Real Coffee is not PUMP PUMP PUMPED with Sugar and Syrup(s).
This place makes coffee with an efficient degree of loooove.
I see a dog bowl in front with water and a nice dog sniffs my hand. He looks like a regular. Inside a beautiful beagle/hound sits next to his owner on a nice clean floor. Clean establishment. How refreshing!
Spend 10-30 minutes here on the outside patio. There are a couple of tables.
B.t.w. the coffee is REAL and Really Freaking Good, Strong, and tasty!
Catahoula is as unique as it's name. I cannot pronounce it yet but I will ask how next time I stop by. :)
My Brain, my grades and I thank you for being there.
I have not blinked ONCE during this entire post.

Met the owner Tim today. Says he will be raising coffee prices by 20% (now that we all voted for his business and promoted him via the 'net!). That would be a mistake, might make it not worth it to go into the 'hood for coffee. Also noticed that the quality of the coffee seems to have gone downhill. My last two pounds tasted a bit like burnt earth - not a good thing!
