My friends convinced me to meet them at cat club. Assuming they were still at the Cat later in the evening, I headed there. So... they had left and i was alone in the midst of an 80s extravaganza. Rather than leave, I decided to stay awhile, dance it up to some journey and have a couple of bevvies. It was actually really fun -- met lots of randoms, experienced that freedom that comes with knowing no one and the space worked somehow.
Unfortunately, I lost my passport sometime in the night. I've called them several times with no answer and have tried two emails -- one to info and one through the site. Hoping that one of those folks reads this review and gets back to me.
Four stars for being epically 80s... and one minus for being unavailable.
Alright - If I did not have to work on Fridays I would be here every Thursday night for 1984. Sadly, my job takes precedence over my love of 80s jams.
The front room is usually brighter and more mainstream poppy songs. Usually people are doing a bit more bumping and grinding in the front.
The back room is usually playing some of the darker 80s new wave synthy jams which I am a huge fan of. You will also notice that mostly black is being worn in this room. People are mostly doing their own thing. Don't be afraid to get up and dance on the platforms next to the mirrors, folks! That's part of the fun of this room!
Drinks are kindy pricey, and there is a cover - so either pre-game it, or prepare to drop $20-$50 bucks easily depending on how many drinks you are buying, and what kind, of course. I am kinda cheap so I will roll in pretty alright to avoid paying a lot for drinks.
I think I am going to just have to tell work that I need to come in later on Fridays - I need to get my 80s fix.
Thursday nights is where it is at. 80's chart in the front, 80's back-track in the back (Depeche Mode) etc.
Where else can you dance like you are being electrocuted? It is the shizzel. I love that you have some hardcore 80's heads, it's like a religious dance experience with shoulder pads and big hair....
'You spin me round & round & round....'
Go next Thursday.
I ended up getting dragged here on a Clockwork night.
And while I wish my kidnappers had given me time to dress appropriately, it impressed me enough where I'd drop by again... hopefully this time of my own volition.
It's a steampunk Neo-Victorian themed night, which means they're very Jesse Rose "Well Now" in the front (old timey music set to club beat) and industrial Deathguild in the back.
Cat Club brags two bars, two separate D.J. booths and even has a creepy alleyway. It mixes the fun of Deathguild with extra costumes and different music.
I like.

**I realize Yelp has gotten it right, but their website is http://www.sfcatclub.com (NOT http://catclubsf.com...the one that pops up first in a Google search).**
Apparently, there's an unresolved problem between the club and the former website people and the former website people have been refusing to take down their site. Unfortunately, that's the one my friends and I saw. We showed up, paid a $10 cover, discovered the party we came for didn't exist, tried to get our money back for an hour (40% back + one round of drinks), paid for another cab ride home and tried to salvage the night.
One star for the general potential of having a fun night there and one star for the two people that actually tried to help us out: one of the bartenders and the outside party promoter who helped us get a little money back and promised us free entrance and a round of drinks at the next party she's putting on at Lot 46 on Jan. 30.
I'm not a Cat Club regular, so maybe there's information out there that would have warned me earlier, but damn, they need to sort out the misinformation situation and be prepared to take responsibility for mishaps like this (e.g. be ready and willing to reimburse).
Wow, I don't even know how to rate this one..
Was here for an 80s night on a Thursday.
MAN, was it cracking. It's probably one of the ugliest dirtiest bars I've been to in a long time, but WOW, it had ONE dancing cage you could go in and out of haha.
Had two rooms with a DJ in each. Um... as a professional DJ, I cannot describe THE HORROR I witnessed in the lack of mixing prowess by both dj's. What made it worse was that I was rolling with THREE other dj's from my company and we all just bite our tongue as we grimaced through each nightmare-ish transition. I don't even know if you can call it a transition.
I'm not quite sure why this place gets 3 stars. It's cool in its own way.
Horrible DJ's.
Dirty and filthy.
Great people though! lol

Thursday night = 80's night! BF and I have collectively agreed that this is officially our favorite place to get our freak on, 80's style. If you love 80's pop, the front room DJ is your best friend - and you're guaranteed to bounce uncontrollably to Madonna's greatest hits, Denise Williams, MJ, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, and on and on. If you're more into 80's rock (dark era), the backroom with dimmed lights and slower tunes will not disappoint.
Crowd is fun, energetic, vibrant, and DIVERSE (which I L-O-V-E). BUT, be patient, because you WILL get bumped and danced on if you're not careful.
PS - Free before 10pm, otherwise $6 to get in. A MUCH BETTER alternative to Paradise Club.
I took down my other Cat Club review because it just wasn't up to my usual standard. Let me try again.
I've been to Cat Club twice in the last ten years.
Seven or eight years ago I was invited to an Edwardian themed party there full of people dressed like Dickens characters. It was fairly obnoxious and not very fun so I left as soon as I could.
Last time I went was a couple months ago as the last stop on a 13 hour birthday bar crawl.
When I was invited I didn't realize I'd be the only guy in a group of crazy fun girls from Sacramento; I call them "The Sacramaniacs". There was one other guy at first but he couldn't handle the off the hook debauchery and whimpered off early on.
The theme of the party was "20 years of The Cure" and that was just fine because some of Robert Smith's music strikes a real cord with me. I even was coaxed into dancing, which I almost never do.
Now here's the reason for the three star rating; they gave me my beer in a plastic cup. They look like regular pint glasses but you notice how light they are when you pick them up and they smell like plastic when you try to drink.
I like my beer to smell like beer!
I've stopped going out on weekends. I'm not sure if this is related to being in a relationship or due to the fact that the manfriend is a bouncer at a club. I go out to go dancing and drinking and the person I should be doing that with is checking ID's and regulating at some other club. hmrph.
So Thursday night after a prime rib dinner with some of his coworkers, we came by Cat Club for a drink. I *love* 80's music so it was fun - though I was still in work clothes. The people we were out with are all in the industry so we were well taken care of at Cat Club. It was a laid back, diverse and fun loving crowd ready to kick off the weekend. 2 different but adjacent rooms so you could bounce back and forth to change up the music.
Remember to cuff your pants if you go into the bathroom though.
So a bunch of us went for my friends birthday. It was free to get in before ten. We get there @ 9:57 and the bouncer won't let us in. We all pull out our phones and show him its before ten and he still says no. We're like "dude my friend rented out a private area for $200, we're all going to buy drinks and there's no one in there" and he still says no.
They leave and I decide to go in and support our friends birthday. I get to the window to pay and the girl says $8. I said, ummm, the website said $7. And she said you must have read it wrong. Umm excuse me Miss Overweight, Overpierced Over makeuped goth girl...I work on websites, I think I know how to read one (by the way their coding is horrible)
The drinks are watered down, they have a shitty beer selection and the goth-nu-wave party was interrupted with songs by crap bands like The Killers. Let's have a little consistency there guys.
I will say thought that I did take a #2 in the bathrooms and for a nightclub/bar it was a pleaseurable/clean experience, That's the only reason they get 1 star.
This review is for their 80s event on Thursday night called 1984:
This place hovers somewhere between 3 and 5 stars depending on what you're looking for.
It's a 5-star event if you appreciate being time warped back to the 80s. The front room plays the likes of MJ, Bel Biv Devoe and Van Halen. The rear room was bumping Cure, New Order and other new wave stuff. It never got crazy crowded here and getting drinks were a breeze. If you have a group of late 20/early 30 friends who just want to be 17 again, this is a good place to do that.
It's a 3-star event for several reasons. The schlong-to-flower ratio was somewhere between 3-to-1 and 5-to-1. Not great odds unless you're betting on a horse. You think this might be better for women but it really isn't unless you're looking for a 40 year old guy in a shabby suit who looks like he's more on a hunt for punani than he is there to dance and enjoy the music.
Amazingly, the club seemed to hit it's stride around 1-2 ish. Overall, the crowd was very diverse.. an odd mix really. B&T oakland types, old dudes in cheap suits, freaks and geeks, yuppies and bro-mans.
I'd probably wouldn't recommend this place to anybody in the mid 20s or younger (unless you seriously LOVE 80s music). I also wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking to meet women as the majority of them came with a bf.
grab the mic and rock your brains out
then get in the cage and do a power ballad
dont forget to tip the kj
fanny packs dont grow on trees...
Let's face it, if you lived through any part of the 80s, you just can't resist bringing that shit back every once and awhile. Yeah, so maybe not the crimped hair and shoulder pads and zubas pants parts, but most definitely the tron, ninja turtle, pee wee herman, and boy george parts. To indulge your secret desire to run in place in some pink leg warmers to some Tiffany - head to the cat club on a Thursday night. Oh yeah, go before 10PM, and cover is free.
Its a pretty divey spot which serves up drinks that are a little steep for a dive on a Thursday, but aren't steep at all for normal club prices. Mad props for the red suited door man bouncer that actually had a personality. DJ was rocking exactly what you'd expect (and would want) to hear on an 80s night. Crowd is a mix of punk, hipsters, douches, asians, and gay men...in general, awesomely diverse.
The bad? Its *SO* goddamn hot. Like, if you farted somethin' fierce, I'm sure no one would be able to smell it over the overpowering scent of full on gym-style sweat. Also, they clearly don't care how many people they pack into the place. It gets crowded to the point where you have to quite literally shove people out of the way to move (I'm not talking the "shoulder tap and slide", I mean *shove*).
All that being said, its a fun time for an OK price...especially when you have an awesome friend who lives in the area and doles out some kick ass pre-gaming.
If you're an 80's music fan and love cheap drinks, check this cool club out on Thursday nights. The DJs play all the beats from rock ballads that are great to groove too. Hence, it gets hot there and it's wiser to dance closer to the fans. However, the club in the back is much cooler if you like new wave music. Nonetheless, the bar in front is ready to quench your thirst and help give you a buzz as you watch the old MTV videos on the projection screen.
Parking is ample on the street. Cover might be free before 10pm. If you're into lounging around with drinks and shaking your booty a bit, this crib is the place to play for all you cool cats.
wow... I joined yelp just to review this place..... loved the music and good times on nye but damn, yeah you bartender with semi-long hair dude. you're a douche. I don't usually get pissed at people, but when you go out of your way to act douchy, well I'm calling you out on it. yeah, you know you are an ass(shoulder length blonde hair douche). . I'm kinda pissed about the bucks that I tipped you before seeing who you were. well. you got me. but you won't get me again. And it pisses me off that I can't go to the cat club anymore, but as a matter of principles, I will never patronize this establishment and will tell all my friends the same. sorry, good times but shitty service... like the door man though.. peace
Thursdays, that's whats up.
cat club was the first club i attended when i FIRST moved to the bay area, 3 years ago. since then i go back regularly (not so much recently, damn early work hours and responsibilities, ugh).
drinks are decently prices, staff seems to be on top of it (thumbs up to the door guy, very chill). $6 cover is doable.
the people are awesome, not douchy. every ones just there to dance and drink. you don't see the 40 year old creeper in the corner or the homies putting their mack down every 15 seconds.
I befriended Jeff the bartender years ago, don't know where he went but i sure as hell miss him. great dude. randy is there now and hes super cool too (even though he thinks i wear eyeliner and i don't, JEALOUS haha)
they also have 3$ PBR cans which is cool.
my only complaint is its cash only, which is inconvenient bc drunk Ryan + ATM is madness.
This place is rad. Let me give you the breakdown.
We showed up before 9:30. This means no cover and well drinks for $3. Lots of places to sit, even for a group of 5. It's like going to a bar that plays great music. The mood is so chill, people aren't dressed pretentiously, and everyone is just doing their own thing.
Around 10:00 the club started picking up, with more people strolling in and more people dancing. The DJ started playing the music he intended people to dance to, so we got up and danced. It was great. He played some A-Ha, some Michael Jackson, some Depeche Mode, and everything in between. Even the boy, who "doesn't like to dance" was insisting that we stay for a few more songs because, as luck would have it, as we were leaving, they played a bunch of his favorite songs as we tried to walk out the door.
We left at around 11:30, right as the better dressed, fancier people started walking in. And we were in bed with enough time to sleep to be alert for work. I will come back!
I went to the Cat Club for "1984," their Thursday night 80's event. It was divided into what was mostly pop 80's in the front with some more industrial 80's in the rear. So.... bangles in the front, black boots in the back. Had the black and tan. I drank it all. Or I drank all of them?
I liked the side alley with the Buddha head in the back. Nice spot to hang out and talk to the people you've met and smoke a bowl. :)
The bartenders were really nice, actually, and Tracy, the coat check girl was super cool and filled me in on some club scene intelligence.
Anyways, I had a really good time and it was an overall great experience. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good place to hang out and chill out to some 80's on Thursdays.
I remember the first time that I came here was during the Folsom St. Fair one year... I've loved it ever since.
I've never had a bad night at the Cat Club. The bouncers are chill and stay out of your business, yet you still know that they would be around if there was trouble.
Absolutely no attitudes. The bartenders actually have personalities and are polite and friendly.
It's a super cheap place (recession busters all the time!) and they have an awesome little lounge area....
On top of everything else, they managed to attract good patrons who are there just to have fun and aren't trying to start any trouble. I've never had unwanted attention at this venue. Just good times all around!
i dont want my review to be biased.
i was here on the first night of pride weekend. me thinks it was thursday night.
jam packed. hot and sweaty. smelled like balls even there werent many balls around. we didnt stay long, due to the hotness and packedness etc etc.
on our way out is when the real fun started.
michael jackson had just died, and upon walking to the exit, an mj song came on. i wanted to pay tribute so i started dancing. gettin' my groove on. i turn around to get my group to dance with me.
and WHACK
some chick hit me in the face, with her head
i'm 5'7''
this chicks head only came up to my mouth
what the fuck, was she running or something? it seriously felt as if i had been punched straight up in the mouth. it hurted so bad i instantly fell onto the bar.
i tasted blood. i was sure my teeth were gone.
THANK GOD THEY WERENT!
but my top lip exploded.
the bitch didnt even stick around to see if i was ok. and the bar got a healthy dose of my blood. gross.
i dont live in SF so i cant say when i'll be back to Cat Club.
but i can say my only memory of it isnt so fond.
that was only the first night of my 4 day trip to san fran. so for the rest of the weekend people were looking at me like i just got the shit beat outta me.
meow.
amazing.
thursday nights have become my new night to aggressively go out, thanks to 1984 @ cat club.
80s. motley crowds. cages to dance in. stiff drinks.
if these words don't make you want to go to cat club, something is critically wrong with you.
Yeah for a club that plays real 80s music and doesnt give you some cooler than thou attitude about it. Yeah for a club that offers 2 4 1 drinks from 9 to 10:30pm. Yeah for a club that has two different dance floors, playing different music including one that is synced up to video screens. Yeah to a club that draws a diverse crowd and no one cares. Yeah for for the Cat Club. Enjoy!
I went to the Cat Club for Trannyshack's Madonna tribute night. It was so crowded that coat check was full by the time we got inside. We could barely move. We went into the main room where the show was and we were pushed and squished to the point where it felt scary and dangerous. It took us 10 minutes to squirm out of the crowd that just kept growing.
The Cat Club security personnel were non-existent. They could have managed the crowd in the back room so that it did not fill way past capacity to a dangerous situation. I can't imagine returning to the Cat Club ever again, and I hope Heklina realizes it's too small of a venue for future Trannyshack events.
We paid 12 dollars to get in, did not see a show, did not have a coat check, and well it just flat out sucked.
I'm still a huge fan because I ALWAYS have fun here but let me just update this because there are no longer $1 drinks. They're $3 now. Doable but.... not $1. :(

I had the most HILARIOUS time last night at Cat Club!
When I got there I was all... WTF MATE? Are we… Read more »
We took a crew here after a film festival night b/c we had gone to the opening party and gone bar crawling and we needed a release. We wanted to dance. There were 4 guys and 1 girl and we were walking towards the front door and some car full of Mexican-Americans who must have been all in their very early 20s drives by with squealing tires and hucks a full Gatorade bottle at us that flies between my head and my friend Michelle's head and they scream "Faggots."
Really? in 2008?
The dancing- fun and beer spillage and trannies and bathroom doors that don't lock and 80s Depeche Mode and more trannies and bears and frats oh my.
If you like glittery cleavage, sweaty ass-cracks with visible thongs, questionably sticky floors, and tacky decor - this is the place for you. That's all I remember.
We went to dance 80s the night Michael Jackson died. It was a hot mess...but in a good way. On Thursday nights, you'll be squished in pretty tight until the bar empties a little around 12:30. The mix of music was pretty good, but I didn't like the fact that they played the same songs over again at the end of the night (and we got there at about 11).
I can't say enough, just how eclectic the mix of people is. It's not your usual hipster dance party or douche dance party. There are people of all ages and scenes dancing together to unpretentious music. You won't believe the different types of people that end up dancing in a birdcage.
The music in the back room is a little more glow-stick clubby, but if you need a break from the heat it's good to go back there and people watch. No matter when you go though, it is very hot!!! And the coat check isn't always open. So make sure you find somewhere to hide your coat or don't bring one at all.
Despite what some yelpers say, I thought the bartenders were pretty great. Jesus people, if you know you're going to be staying a while tip the bartender $5 bucks on your first drink order. You'll be surprised how quickly they find your face through the crowd.
1984, Bondage-a-go-go, The Hunger... What do these have in common? Nothing at all, except there's a stripper cage in the front dance room that begs drunk people to use it.
And boy, no matter if they're goth or skank, they use stripper cage as if it were their alcohol induced right of passage which ultimately leads to people like me pointing, laughing, and posting photos on yelp =P
The two dance rooms and variety of theme nights makes Cat Club a great place to stop. Mind you, it's cash only and there may be a cover charge. There's a smoking "room" off to the side in the front area which is a nice touch. Music is good, but let's not kid ourselves on the DJ's.. Their transitions suck. LEARN TO SPIN, PEOPLE!
Still, I love it. If you've got whims, each different theme night will provide welcome relief to a focused work day.
I got kissed by a cross dresser.
I danced to an ancient music vid of The Cure. Boy, they were hotties.
I chatted with an unemployed photographer who was reading a lighting promo pamphlet. At the bar.
Just another 1984 TH at the Cat Club. Why I never made it here before last night is a shame. It is a dive bar and yes the two rooms are very different. Back room if you don't drive through a tunnel or cross a bridge to get to SF for a weeknight out. Front room if you consider Victoria's Secret lingerie club wear.
$6 for a smallish glass of red wine, bathroom when I used it early in the night was clean'ish with TP.
My goth friend had fun too but we both wished people had come more in bad 80's outfits. I can see that it was prolly better a while ago, but there is still a big crowd having fun, so it'll perk up your spirits if you are thinking a pink slip, and not one you can wear, is imminent.
Been trying to make it to 1984 on Thursdays for the last few years, but the planets never aligned. That all changed this week, as I finally had the right girls, the right attitude, and a great buzz.
Amazing party. I'm committed to making it once a month. Dress lean, it's hotter than two squirrels fucking in a ski sock. And pound your cocktails at the bar, they use the those evil hard plastic party hat glasses that your grandma loves. They don't last more than a minute in the crowd.
Final word: You are missing out if you are not attending this party a few times a year.
80's night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that will be the only reason i will go there. FUN TIMES!
the venue is really small, cramped, and old. the drinks were whatever. i believe it is cash only? BAD BAD BAD. the restrooms were DIRTTTYY and SMALLLLLL and there is always some kind of bodily fluid on the floor/sink. eww.
but it was fun dancing and SINGING ALONG WITH FRIENDS!!!!
We stopped in here whilst at the Folsom Street Fair. The time spent there is as follows:
1. Avoid creepy dude we see everywhere who is perched on a stool by the door (not for my sake but for Pamela D's sake)
2. Commence searching for a particular someone who is supposed to be there.
3. Attempt to filter our way through a way to packed bar. Get stopped by random woman who tells me I'm really, i mean REALLY pretty a couple of times then proceeds to suckle my boobs. I tell her thank you and continue the search.
4. Temporarily give up searching and get a drink at the bar. One of the best Madras I've had in a while. Thank you Asian bartendress in a corset.
5. Start to dance then decide that the other room had better music playing wade through the crowd to only change our minds and go back to the original location we had been dancing in.
6. Made a mental note to make this a part of the regular bar rotation.
Yes, I am smitten with this place...and could use a little more boob action.
I've been here a few times now, usually for 84 or Gossip, and I've always managed to have a good time.
I prefer the back room, partially because the bar is easier to get to, but mainly because that's where they play the lesser-known stuff and have video projections.
The last time I was there it was for a Morrissey tribute, complete with random Morrissey clones. Kinda creepy, especially when they were dancing on the little platforms in 3s, but kinda cool, especially the ones who genuinely looked like him. And yes, I was er, "inspired" (*cough*drunk*cough*faded*cough*sloshed*cough*) enough to act out the lyrics to "Girlfriend in a Coma." I wasn't the only one making a fool out myself though so it's okay. :]
They do have occaisional drink specials (the one at Gossip was a big stein of Sam Adams for $7 and you got to keep the glass) and no cover if you go early (how early depends on what the event is). However, this is one of the few places I'll go and not care too much about the cover, or even what I'm wearing (I was the lone chick wearing sweats and a t-shirt in a sea of black and plaid - unintentional, but that's just how I roll sometimes).
I've been to the Cat Club a number of times, most recently for a dark 80s night last Saturday. It's actually been remodeled since the last time I've been there several years ago which is good because it was long overdue.
For those who haven't been there, the Cat Club is split in to a front and back room both with full bars and DJ booths. They typically play more mainstream stuff in the front room and darker less mainstream music in the smaller back room. The back room also has lots of mirrors, projected video, and several small stages guaranteed to bring out the attention whore in us, especially after a few drinks. The back room is where you are likely to find me when I'm there.
I came here for dark 80s night last Saturday night and had an amazing time. I spent most of my time in the back area where they played tons of Smiths and Morrissey songs. There was a guy there that looked just like Morrissey and stood on the side stage with a couple of his friends and sang and enacted every song while the videos played behind him.
They played some other great dark 80s music as well.
There was a great beer special that I took advantage of. We danced there until 3 am and then headed out to Sparky's. Great vibe and I had a great time.
When we left I was ready for a cheeseburger and a good FUC.

A friend told us there was 80's night every Thursdays at a club called Cat something. I assumed there was only one club in SF with the name cat in it: the Glas Kat.
I was wrong.
Imagine my embarrassment when I showed-up wearing black Z Cavaricci pants, Zodiac shoes (with white socks of course), a white turtleneck, a cardigan, and sporting a fresh fade. I think I even found some Drakkar for the night.
I went all out and would've probably won the best dressed contest if they had one and I was at the right place. Instead, I came off looking like the fashion frozen old guy at the club.
Anyways, the Cat Club looks kinda dinky outside but once you get inside it gets better. The crowd was a nice mix of guys and girls: meaning not too many drunken dudes leering, being douchebags, or trying to get into fights. And overall, it was an easy going group looking to do some drinking and dancing. The drinks/shots weren't overly priced and super generous at times. And the music had its moments.
The only thing was the dance floor is way too close to the entrance/exit. It was difficult navigating to the bar, or other parts of the club, and also a pain trying to leave. I'd suggest hanging out in the back room because it's a lot more chill, it has its own bar, and is a lot easier walk to the bathroom.
Overall, it was a enjoyably semi-drunken time.
It's just too bad I'm not big on 80's music; otherwise, I think I might have appreciated more of the stuff they played.
Note to self...
**$1 drinks before 10:00.
**Drinks for $1 taste like crap!
**FREE cover before 9:30.
**Arrive early... and be happy you didn't burn a hole in your pants!
End note.

I love this place: strong drinks, bartenders with genuine personality, and a healthy rotation of nights to fit almost all musical interests.
You know what's awesome?
Blind dates.
You know what's even more awesome?
Blind dates with pictures from 2 decades ago who show up to meet you and look 60.
You know what's even more and more awesome?
Knowing your friends are partying it up at the Cat Club, ditching the loser and meeting them for drinks. Yes, the Cat Club saved my night! By the time I got there I was pretty faded, I won't lie, and after many "Hey, not all dates will turn out to be your grandpa" shots, I do recall lots of people dancing, lots of people spilling drinks on me and lots of fun 80's music. Pretty much all you really need on a Thursday night.
Cat Club = good.
I might be a bit biased because it's an easy spot to walk to, but seriously 80's night rocks! I think the people are a lot of fun and the DJ is great, they split it into two different rooms, one plays more pop 80's like Whitney Houston and stuff and the other room is more depeche mode type of music, which makes it nice to go back and forth between rooms. I have to agree it is soooooooooooooo hot, toooo hot, I wish they could do something about it because it does suck when you feel sweaty and smelly with your makeup running down your face. The prices are a little steep, so I tend to pre-drink then just enjoy a drink and dance all night.
