If you are thinking of enjoying just one very special occasion type dinner while in Newport, let the restaurant at Castle Hill Inn be your destination!

My husband and I were vacationing in Newport last month and wisely chose this restaurant as our one special night out destination for dinner.  We couldn't have picked a more perfect place.  The service here was top notch.  Steve was our server - he was friendly, accomodating and had a great sense of humor.  The wine list here is amazing - so many great wines that it's hard to choose just one.  The food is even better.  For appetizer, we both had the George's Bank Scallops, which were amazing.   For my main course, I had the pan roasted George's Bank Lemon Sole with truffle-fava bean agnolotti, lobster, chanterelle mushroom, corn, Vidalia onion,lemon-basil emulsion.  My husband had the Elysian Fields Lamb Tasting:  Roasted rack & sweet garlic-lamb crépinette, sunchoke purée, swiss chard, Lustau sherry reduction.  Both of us thought our main courses were absolutely heavenly!  For dessert, I had the Shiso Panna Cotta with sour cream ice cream and hubby had the Chocolate Souffle - both heavenly!  We finished off our meals with an amazing glass of Inniskillin Riesling "Ice Wine", which was admittedly the priciest dessert wine we've ever indulged in, but it was worth every cent!

The amazing waterfront view from the main dining area can't be beat either - especially at sunset.  It's definitely one of the most romantic restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of dining at.  You'll definitely leave here happy.  You'll be sure to remember and treasure your dining experience for years to come.

A Solid 3.5 if I could. Careful if you are trying to find it at night- the sign is not lighted. A dramatic tree lined  drive up to the "Castle"is great fun. Free Valet parking - woo hoo!
Okay, we went during restaurant week, so perhaps I am not being fair. Afterall, 3 courses for $30.00 here is a drop in the bucket compared to regular menu prices. Expectations were very high. We were seated by a window with a gorgeous view of the Newport bridge and harbor,  but there was a terrible draft blowing  up my dres and I had to switch seats with my husband - as they did not offer to move us to a different table. I felt that our young server was very inexperienced. I do not mind dim lighting, but  It was too dark to read the menu. They  were out of the one Belgium beer my husband wanted and I really hated to see outragious prices for wines by the glass- since there was not a one that was  appealing enough.  So, I settled for  a pommagranite margerita - and it tasted  like bar mix.
The  Veal Cheek app. was outstanding, savory  with the scent of the rich demi-glace wafting  into my nose and practically causing me to swoon! I wante dmore. Much more.  the Scottish Salmon was fishy and way over salted and it was a weird accompaniment- lentils..... how about  some green beans or ,apsargus- or SOMETHING green?
It was my husband 's birthday, so I almost cried when his canneloni arrived and was so skimpy and sad looking. It was an appetizer sized portion. He said is was bland. I would have sent it back, to be honest.  Desserts redeemed the place- oustanding warm apple streudel - light and crisp - with H.M. walnut ice cream . It was to die for  -but I really NEEDED MORE! And hubs pumpkin flan was very good - and also small. I did not leave feeling totally satiated. But I might return for the $69.00 tasting menu because the choice looked so much more  appealing than our restaurant week limited menu. And I will long remember the superb apple streudel.
Castle Hill  would be THE place to watch the sunset in warm weather .

Wowza!  I had REALLY high expectations coming here for lunch the other day, and every expectation was met, and then surpassed.  The Inn itself is absolutely beautiful, located at the end of a winding road.  The pictures speak for themselves.  No amount of words can describe the amazing view.  Adirondack chairs are lined up just waiting for people to relax and take in the breathtaking scenery.  There actually weren't any people sitting there while we were there, but we were very tempted to after we finished our meal.  Next time for sure!

For the food... everything was really yummy.  We ordered the mussels appetizer to split, and the kitchen actually served it to us split into two smaller dishes.  I've only been to one other restaurant before this that actually takes the incentive to split an appetizer onto individual plates in order to make eating it easier (and more personal) for the people sharing it.  I honestly think that's a sign of a really great restaurant... seriously.  They pay attention to every little detail!  Now the mussels were not only served in separate dishes, but they were Heavenly!!  The broth was delicious, the shallots added a delicious bit of texture and mild onion flavor, the tomatoes were juicy and plump, and the mussels themselves were large and flavorful... the perfect dish!

My sister had the salmon.  I tasted each component of her dish and I thought it was really really yummy, everything from the velvety risotto, the crispy-skinned salmon, the earthy morels, and the perfectly cooked asparagus.  I had the scallops.  They were cooked perfectly and complimented with a really yummy ancho chile sauce.  The corn cake was tasty, but I think the presentation would have been better if each of the four scallops was served on smaller corn cakes instead of one giant one, since the middle of the cake was a bit softer, and the edges had a much better texture.  Smaller cakes would have had more crusty edges to contrast the softer scallops.  Just a thought...

In any case, all the food was delicious, the service was impeccable, the views were fantastic, and I'm honestly planning my next visit as we speak.  Seriously.  I'm thinking in about a week and a half.  Mark my words.  I'm not kidding.  It really was that good...

The location, a Victorian style mansion over-looking the water, is hard to beat.  Entering the main door, you're in a beautiful warm room, with carved wood and paneling adorning the walls.  Choosing to dine indoors because of the weather, the tables still afforded a great view of the lawn and ocean.

The lunch served was very very good.  One entrée was a lobster roll with tarragon, the other a perfectly roasted salmon over creamy risotto.  It was hard to determine which was better.

Although the setting was slightly formal, the staff was very friendly and a place that we would definitely consider returning to for dinner.

Including 2 drinks, tax & tip, the bill came to around $70.  A little steep for lunch but well worth it.

Very, very good American/Continental fare with what is arguably the best view in Newport.  Go early and catch a drink at the outdoor bar at sunset, but be sure and make a reservation.

Ate here more than once while in Newport.  Would love to wake up here and eat all day for a week or two.

The meals were OUTSTANDING and the location is glorious.  Try to get reservations for lunch on the lawn, it's a lovely view.  We had our lunch on the lawn one afternoon and I could've sat for hours; just watching the view.  Oh... and the lunch was delicious.

The dinners are superb; can't wait to get back here!!  Very interesting dishes; some were simple and sublime... others quite complicated and truly memorable.  Wonderful.

I have to add that we went for dinner here this past weekend.  Again, the food is a four+ star experience.  But we had drinks at the outdoor deck beforehand, and the views are ridiculous.  We were lucky that the weather was nice while we were there, and there were quite a few people who were taking advantage of the chairs on the lawn enjoying it all.  We will definitely return here, perhaps just for drinks, the bar menu, and the view!

Castle Inn received Relais & Chateaux status this year - which means it's pretty swank.  There are a handful of fine dining options in Newport - other places have great food but poor (or just slow) service.  In my opinion Castle Hill is the one that scores the highest in service, decor, and food.

Drinks on the lawn at sunset is on the must-do list if you're visiting Newport.  Beautiful views, Adirondack chairs scattered on the lawn, it's perfect.  Go there for your pre-dinner cocktail, then head inside to the beautiful dining room for dinner.  They have prix fixe 3,5 and 9 course options - if you go with a date then you can split a cheese and then a dessert to make it 4 courses. ;-)  Wine pairing is offered.

I ate there 3 times this past summer, each time having something different, and every time my meal was impeccable - as was the service.  For fine dining in Newport, Castle Hill is my top choice.

Based on food and service, Castle Hill is a solid four stars, but its setting pushes it up to five.

I have family in Newport, so we always make several trips to Castle Hill when we visit since we can just walk over from the house.  We love to hit up happy hour, sitting on the lawn in Adirondack chairs watching the boats go by, or up on the verandah enjoying the sunset.  The views are spectacular, as the Inn it set atop a cliff overlooking the ocean and the Newport Bridge.

The food at Castle Hill is pretty great, if pricey.  We enjoy nibbling on small bites, as opposed to purchasing en entire meal, but really we head over for the drinks and the views.  The service is very professional and attentive.  If you're just enjoying the bar, your "resort dressy" clothes will do; in the dining room, you'll need your finery.

It's worth a visit to Castle Hill when you're in Newport.  Kinda fun to pretend that you're a Vanderbilt enjoying all the trappings of the ultra-rich life!

Castle Hill is one of my favorite places ever- and I am surprised it took this long for me to write a review. I have dined there, gone to weddings there, and stayed overnight there... and I can say that it is one of the most beautiful places ever!

We have been gone for a couple of years now but when we do make it back to RI there is always a drive on Ocean Drive, This past trip- we drove up on a beautiful Sunday morning to enjoy bloody marys out on the lawn.

Service is still 5 stars- I love this place!

GQ didn't dub this one of the "50 Best Dates" for nothing!  Castle Hill for drinks is awesome.  I've been here hungover as hell for bloodies on Sunday morning with a big group of buddies and I've been here with a date watching the sun go down with a gin & tonic...you just can't beat it.  Ocean Cliff, next door, has much better bloody marys, but that's it...Castle Hill has a better view, a better atmosphere, a lighthouse, they let you go on down on the rocks, and outstanding bartenders (ask for Charles).  I've been there a dozen times and I'll probably be there a dozen more.  Never tried the food, I drank my dinner, but it looked good.

I don't drive a Rolls Royce, Own A Yacht or wear big diamonds, but I had a good time at this lifestyle of the rich and famous hang-out.

There is a massive lawn with chairs all over. Grab a drink at the outside bar and post up with your crew. The staff was young and polite. Valet Parking. A gate keeper asks you what your business is as you drive up, then radio's ahead. Pretty posh. Out of this world views of Rhode Island's  inner sanctum of islands, sailing lanes, castles and just plain old grand homes.

Can't get better.  I had my wedding reception here.  When the servers served my guests, all the women were first served - at the exact same time.  Then, at the exact same time, the men.  Each person had a waiter, they waited on a que that we didn't see and they all placed the dished down at the same time - it was a site to see.

The food is the best I have ever had, hands down.  I've had elk, beef, chicken, clam chowder, salmon, pasta.  The only thing that makes it difficult to eat is the presentation.  They dishes are a work of art when they come to your table.

The wine - if you are a wine lover, you will find it here.  If you are not sure about a wine, they will let you have a taste test first.  No problem.

Views - wonderful.  If you are looking for a romantic place in New England - come here...

For dinner, you have three choices - 3 course for $69, 5 course for $89 or the 8 course for.. I don't know how much the 8 course is.

Breakfast and Tea service is for guests only.  I've stayed her... Love it!

The views and feeling of being on the edge of the world are worth five stars alone. Wonderful accommodations, discreet service (no- we weren't sneaking in trannies or three breasted strippers), well-prepared food, and friendly patience rendered this not only a delightful regatta weekend, but a place to which we will definitely return for a longer stay.

I came here with a group of ten people and we had a late brunch and drinks at the bar and then took our drinks out to the lawn to sit and chat in the large Adirondack chairs.  It was an expensive meal, but worth it.  The food was great and the views spectacular!  This would be an absolutely gorgeous place to have a wedding or to host a celebration!  The next time I'm in Newport I will come back to take in the view and some more of the deliciously huge cocktails!

SOOooo good. I had the Lobster Hash wich is absolutely great, and might even be worth the $22 ticket price. Beautiful view of the sailboats, and a massive staff that's ready to help. Not the easiest place to get to, but really relaxing once you do.
