This is a fantastic place to go for daily fitness, yoga, and their spa is really worth trying. I particularly recommend Nathalie's facials, Suzy's massage, Rachael and Robert as personal trainers, and Maricarmen's yoga classes. They are truly world-class in their breadth of knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm.
This gym is totally approachable for people of all body types and fitness levels, rarely if ever crowded, uses environmentally sound practices, has a super friendly staff that make you feel like a valued member of a community, additionally it is very well located to downtown.
People think it's expensive but the saying that you get what you pay for was never truer than with Castle Hill. To me, it's great value for the money.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This is a great, clean gym with tons of amenities. The only thing it is lacking is a pool. The staff members are professional and friendly. This gym is the best gym in Austin.

I'd like to preface this review by saying I already have a yoga studio I'm dedicated to. When I say dedicated I mean that if this were Harry Potter and I was Lord Voldemort, there would definitely be a horcrux of my soul hidden somewhere in that studio. But that's absurd because clearly, I'd be a Weasley by default of my gingerness and besides that- this is real life. In real life, friends, there are bills. Even donation yoga gets expensive when you're going six days a week. Which leads me to my crossover to Castle Hill Yoga.
I'm starting to get my groove on here and am really enjoying my new classes. I've yet to have an instructor I dislike and I really appreciate the fact that they offer a solid Ashtanga program and also some Anusara classes. The largest difference I've noticed is that class sizes are much, much smaller than what I'm accustomed to. Yesterday I was running late, showed up two minutes before class, and there was plenty of space to set up my mat. This also means more teacher attention. Perhaps a blessing or a curse depending on the day; either way it's conducive to greater growth.
So why only three stars you say? Using the facilities here are extremely affordable because my work signed up for a program and therefore we have discounted rates. I don't know if I would pay the dinero if I were left to pay full price.Listed in: Good Yoga Loving

I have been seeing Rachael Bercy for three years and her massage is incomparable. She is attentive, thorough and precise. I had pretty much decided my neck and shoulder pain was going to be something I had for the rest of my life. Well, she healed it in a matter of weeks. I can't wait to go back after a long and stressful semester. Plan ahead because she is usually booked up for at least 3-5 days.

I tried Castle Hill for the 3-month sign-up contract, and I liked it. I didn't love it, because the classes I could attend were always uncomfortably crowded and I quickly realized it isn't exactly a "young" people's gym-probably because of the cost. I really enjoyed the yoga wall, though, and my neck's not pleased that I now have to make due with regular headstands. I appreciated some of the quirkier equipment, like the Jacob's ladder machine, and the cleanliness of the place. Still, I need a gym where I don't feel a sort of tense desperation to arrive at classes 15-20 minutes early.
I had a lot of fun running around the outdoor area, though! -

I was driving to work after picking up Screaming Goat tacos when I first spotted Castle Hill Fitness. Glancing back and forth between the bag of tacos in my hand and the tight-buttocked girl walking through the front door, I decided that it was time for a change.
I scheduled a tour the next week and purchased a membership on the spot. (Discounted rates for students!) This gym rocks. It's a little difficult to navigate at first, but once you get accustomed to all the little nooks and crannies, it's surprisingly big. It has a ton of equipment (including cardio machines with DVD players! Finally, an excuse to work through my oft-neglected Netflix queue!), and a decent selection of classes - some free, some available at additional cost.
The staff are all ridiculously nice and accommodating. At one point I signed up for MIXBoxing with Minna then promptly tripped and stubbed my toe so hard I broke it. I couldn't wear shoes, much less kick things, so I asked if I could get a partial refund to use toward another session. They gave me a full refund in credit and offered to let me suspend my account until I was cleared to work out again. How awesome is that?
The trainers are super. Remember that last paragraph where I tripped and broke my toe? I am not graceful. Picked last in gym class, sent to the out out outfield in little league softball, I have always avoided all things athletic due to my shyness and uncanny ability to get hit in the face by balls no matter what sport is being played. I have never felt embarrassed in any class at Castle Hill, the trainers have never commented on my awkward flailing and have always corrected my form in a positive, encouraging way.
Nine months on, Castle Hill is still my #1. -

I have been going to Castle Hill Fitness for about a month now. I was a bit weary of joining a gym because they are usually crowded by a bunch of amateurs who can't figure out how to use a machine or swinging weights wildly or meat heads who grunt and sweat all over the machines. Castle Hill Fitness is neither of those!
Castle Hill rarely has more than 10 people in the workout area and there is always cardio equipment available to use. They have several rooms that are open for free use when there are no classes using them (you can do yoga in an empty room if you would like). There is an outdoor section with sledgehammers that you can beat on tires with, jump ropes and other primitive forms of muscle weaponry.
I go strictly for the classes specifically yoga and Total Toning. I run every other day about 4 - 10 miles in the greenbelt and I assumed I was somewhat fit...until I went to my first class. I was completely worked (in a good way) and was sore for about 3 days. Total Toning is an energetic aerobic/plyometrics style hour long workout that blasts every muscle group (usually two at a time with balance work as well). I love it. The energetic instructors are fantastic and they are great motivators, knowledgeable trainers/athletes and understand that for participants to be able to do something it has to be modeled properly.
Bottom line, great instructors, great staff (after only a few visits the front desk people know my name) and the right amount of space and equipment. I am very impressed!
P.S. for the nature nerds/gardening geeks out there: In the outside workout area there are large troughs that they use to grow vegetables for use in the cafe. -

Due to a non-functioning hypothalamus, my body has no register for being full. I look at every meal like it's just an appetizer. Were it not for Castle Hill, my obituary headline would definitely involve something about exterior wall demolition and an industrial crane.
This is truly a spectacular gym. Since I joined last fall, they've just gotten better; continuing to streamline the layout/design and upgrading equipment. But never in a way that precludes one from getting the full benefit of the facilities.
The Pilates and Yoga rooms are amazing and the instructors are wonderful. The cardio equipment is plentiful and state-of-the-art. I like that they have the traditional stuff (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes) in addition to more unique offerings like the infinite rope pull machine, motorized climbing wall, hand pedaler, Jacob's perpetual ladder and, my personal favorite, the vibrating Power Plate.
For the beefcakes, there's also beaucoups of weight machines to target every part of your body, and a Muscle Beach free weight area surrounded by mirrors so you can watch yourself kiss your oily biceps.
Because of the layout, there are so many nooks, you don't feel like you're on display in some monolithic chamber. It also affords the more meditative gym rats with a peaceful experience.
They also offer Acupuncture, Massage and a full-service cycling shop. Not to mention the uber-convenient and healthy cafe, which caters to every possible dietary restriction with delicious, organic and mostly local food.
I'm deducting one star because they close just a bit too early--9 p.m. M-F, and 7 p.m. on the weekends--and because parking can be a pain at peak hours. I hate having to walk a long way to go work out. -

I had a free trial here last month. It definitely has its pros and cons.
It's small so it's easily crowded with the after work crowd. There's a huge benefit to planning your exercise around these times.
It's pricey. And memberships only come with 6 classes included per month. But that's my favorite thing about the gym!
The yoga classes are fantastic. Each instructor of course varies in style and popularity but they are all extremely friendly. I tried several different classes to gauge my abilities and try out different kinds of yoga. Every instructor immediately introduced themselves to me, asked me about my experience and asked about injuries. Personally I often corrected in yoga class but they did so very kindly and usually with a sense of humor.
The facilities themselves are well kept and beautiful. The front desk staff is very friendly.
I recommend checking out their website for their listings of free and community classes. Community classes are only $7 which is reasonable for anywhere and these are very enjoyable. -
Review from Amber D.
It's been over a year since I first began climbing that monstrous hill next to Castle Hill on my way home. By climbing I mean pushing my bike up because I have a strict "Fuck hills" policy and that shit is steep. I tried Castle Hill out on a freebie promo (me? freebie? what??) and took only one yoga class. The room was beautiful but the instructor was distant. I felt like an observer rather than a participant, so I decided it was not for me. Time passes, things change, and I decide to enter again, mainly to use the arm machines as my legs kept getting re-injured.
I go. I row. I bike. I hike... back up the hill pushing my bike home after each work out. It grows on me. The just-right lighting, friendly staff, recycling-enthusiasm, variety of machines (I'm talking things you've never imagined), toiletries-in-locker rooms, gorgeous wooden lockers themselves, sauna, blow dryers, fluffy towels, and the mere fact that I can bring my Netflix dvd's with me and watch whatever the hell I want on my own LCD screen above each machine? I think I'm sold. The space is a little cramped, but I'm comfortable with it, and nothing makes me happier than hammering out 1,000 calories while catching up on Mad Men in such a great environment. -

My main complaint and the reason I left Castle HIll Fitness is the hours.
This gym closes at 9pm during the week. 5pm on Sundays.
This might be fine if you work out of your home and can make your own schedule or if you are a trophy wife.
My days frequently start at 5am and can end as late as 11pm. Even when I got done early (8:30ish) I still couldn't make it to the gym before they closed.
This was a huge stress for me. I was paying $65 a month and wasn't able to use the gym as frequently as I liked.
The weekend hours aren't any better. Open at 8am, and close at 7 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday.
I spoke with someone at the desk and was told there wasn't enough demand for later hours. (This was back in '06).
I left shortly thereafter.
I know they have expanded some since then, but I always felt this gym was extremely tiny. Too tiny.
I did take a few classes here on Sundays an enjoyed those, and have heard good things from other peeps about the classes as well.
BOTTOM LINE:
The hours, the size, and the cost did not make this a practical gym for me.
I have been a satisfied member of 24 hour fitness for almost 2 years paying less than half Castle Hill's rate and I can go to the gym whenever the hell I want. -

I've waited to review Castle Hill for a while, because gyms can be like boyfriends. When you first start seeing each other, everything is just sooo great, but after a few months, sometimes you lose interest. Then you end up not communicating, fighting about stupid things, gaining stress weight...but not with Castle Hill. As Yentl would say, "He's such a mensch!" (that's Yiddish for "this one's a keeper")...
I started at Castle Hill because they are one of the few gyms in Austin that offers Ashtanga yoga. My ashtanga teacher at UT started teaching @ Castle Hill, so I tried it out, and I haven't looked back since. After my class card ran out, I became a member. Is it expensive? YES. But for me, that's motivation to actually USE my gym membership. Also, the fact that it's expensive means that they can hire good instructors and keep them on board by paying them well. Tthey can get good equipment and keep it well-maintained, and they offer the little amenities that make it worth it, like nice towels, well-stocked toiletries, etc. The staff are very nice, and the only time they ever made a mistake with my fees, they fixed it right away.
They have a huge variety of equipment, and almost all of the cardio machines are hooked up to individual TVs with cable. Some of them even have DVD players! I've only waited for a machine one time, and I go to the gym on average 4 times a week. They also have cool machines like the jacob's ladder and the never-ending rock wall, which are fun ways to vary your cardio workout.
The strength training equipment is all kept in good shape, and it never ever smells like gross old sweat. They offer an orientation session for new members, which is essentially an hour-long personal training session for free where you can learn about all of their equipment. I've enjoyed adding things like Bosu balls and kettlebells to my regimen - both things that I was unfamiliar with and scared to use at a mega gym like 24-hour or Gregory.
The classes have been universally really great. I started taking kickboxing on a whim, and it's now my favorite workout. I liked the teacher so much that I started training with him! I think it's great that their trainers also teach classes, because it gives you an opportunity to get to know someone's workout philosophy. They also offer discounts on training for small groups, which is a great way to make it more affordable. The yoga classes are excellent, and I appreciate that they take a very holistic approach that encourages people to live the lifestyle, not just take a class. As I said, they also offer ashtanga, which is rare at full-service gyms. The classes are usually small enough that everyone gets some individual attention, and they offer classes at all times of day. The pilates equipment is quite impressive, and I've also taken some spin classes, circuit cardio, etc. I've enjoyed all of them.
The personal training has been great so far. I haven't lost weight (yet), but that's my bad for not eating as well as I should. I have noticed BIG differences in my endurance and strength, as well as muscle tone, and I owe that to an excellent trainer who really listens to my needs and provides an amazing workout.
I haven't yet tried any of their spa services (and don't plan to...not my thing), so no comment on that.
A common complaint is that they close early, but personally, if I haven't gone to the gym by 7pm, it means that I'm just not going at all. They still open plenty early for me. And yeah, the parking can be bad, but I get a primo spot right up front at least once a week. And honestly, you're going to the gym to work out, right? So you can warm up by walking half a block. The only other thing that Castle Hill lacks (in my opinion) is a pool. Nor do they offer any pool access at anywhere else nearby (as far as I know...I haven't asked since my member orientation in November). I'm not much of a swimmer, but I feel like aqua classes would be such a cool way to expand their offerings. They did recently open their studio across the street, in which I've taken a few yoga classes. It's annoying to walk across the street after checking in, but it's also nice to have a separate space for larger classes/workouts.
I'm so glad I found Castle Hill. This is the only gym that makes me look forward to working out! Oh, and the best part about this gym is that there are no grunting 'roid-heads and no ditzy sorority sisters working out in heels and makeup. Praise the lo', I never thought I'd find a gym devoid of those annoyances...Listed in: Return Visits

I've been fortunate to have been a member at some amazing gyms. For a boutique gym, Castle Hill has it all. The classes are outstanding; as a yoga devotee, I normally have to join a dedicated yoga studio in addition to a traditional gym as the latter generally offer mediocre yoga classes. Castle Hill is the exception. Their Ashtanga, in particular, is first-rate. Some of the best teachers I have encountered in the country. I learned something new every time I attended a Mysore class. The other thing that impressed me enormously is their inclusion of pilates reformer classes in the regular class catalog. Usually, the few gyms that do have this equipment charge a substantial extra fee for its use.
Last but not least in any business is the staff. They are friendly, professional and knowledgeable. I had a special need that was accommodated swiftly and graciously by a manager.
Very well-run business and I plan on joining again when I return to Austin. -

I can't honestly vouch for the gym here, as my experience was specifically related to the Castle Hill Food For Fitness Cafe. And that experience was terrific.
This location comes jam-packed with all sorts of healthy concoctions and elixirs, from the "Banana Bread" Smoothie I downed (soy milk, banana, pecan and cinnamon) to the overload of veggie options, organic goodies and more. These guys walk the walk when it comes to fitness, and you know when you spend some time there that you're somehow walking out refreshed, energetic, and ready to kick some ass, where ever that day's ass might be.
Seriously, the idea for this type of cafe has been pulled off with aplomb: here's hoping they'll be here for a long time to come, and ensuring the same of their patrons. -

Castle Hill is the best choice in Austin if you are looking to become a ninja, special forces soldier or you just want to get your flabby butt in shape.
I have been here a few times on invitation and I have always been impressed with the extensive facilities, cool toys and kick ass classes. I love the rock holds all over the place, they let me climb around to stretch out before hitting the cool motorized climbing wall. The have pools inside, yoga rooms, pilates, martial arts, just about anything you could want.
Seriously you could become a ninja here.
Quick note on the "spinning" class....even if the girl who invited you is really attractive don't go to this class thinking you are going to be "tough" and get through it to impress her. First off, she was a professional boxer and actress, so that was a bad start. Second, you will get your butt handed to you (almost literally) in this high speed, high energy class. Third, make sure you buy bike shorts before you go or your very private parts will never forgive and you may end up sterile. In other words, this is a fun class but it is a TOUGH class and will really get your blood flowing and if you're not careful you might end up sterile and looking like a sissy when your date kicks your butt.Listed in: How to Stay FLY....in the ATX

OK...5 stars! Why? And this is for Castle Hill Cycles...I've lived in Austin over 30 years. Been part of the running, biking, kayaking, swimming phenomena since before most of the participants out there were even born. I'm not a pro, tri-athlete, or personal trainer. I'm just a guy who likes to stay fit so that I can experience life. Bought my first suspension bike in 1989 and road bike the next year from Hill Abel when he just opened the Sport Shop where Flipnotics is now on Barton Springs. He's 5 star plus also!
However if you want the Ferrari of bikes...with ace mechanics who are real humans, and not some tatted, arrogant, druid, who looks down his nose at you because you've got a dirty chain...then this is the place. It also helps that it is also the best fitness workout house in town. With personal trainers who really, really care about you.
Gordon and Gerry are the lead mechanics and sales...and I am proud to call them my friends also. Becoming so from buying my first Pinarello there...and now having bought my second.
Do your research, go to the shop, look at the machines on the road and ask the rider on the bike for their opinion...or you can save your energy and take my advice...

Edit, April 2008: SInce taking the bootcamp that prompted my original review, I've joined the gym and it's great. The slightly rough towels don't bug me any more and I appreciate being able to work out whenever my work schedule permits-- lunchtimes are very handy for that now-- and I really like the self-defense/martial arts class taught by Robert. It's not for wimps, you will get a great workout, and learn useful skills too. I already have better definition of my biceps and delts.
Old review:
Wow, what a great mini-bootcamp! I used to belong to Castle Hill but moved out of Austin. Through UT's informal classes, I'm taking a mini bootcamp (3 weeks, 5 days a week, 1 hr a day) and it's a more affordable way to get access to this nice facility. It's wonderful to get a good sweat on with a professional instructor who is so careful about promoting health and safety... then the locker room is almost like a spa. They provide everything you could need to get ready in the morning, from Q-tips and razors to shampoo, gel, conditioner etc. The showers have great water pressure and lots of hot water, even at 7 am when there's a bunch of ladies soaking it in. (Sorry guys!)
My only complaint is the lockers are a little small, the locker room itself is a little small (or crowded feeling perhaps) and the towels are super-rough industrial feeling! I understand the difficulties of having clean towels ready day after day, but I think these are the same towels I used 6 years ago when I did belong to the gym... time for some new ones :) However, I'd rather use an exfoliating towel rather than bring my own and have to deal with a wet towel in the car. -

I've only been going to Castle Hill Fitness for for Yoga for a few weeks, and I'm getting to like it.
The facility is very nice with 2 Yoga rooms, a Pilates space, a multipurpose room with nice stationary bikes for spin classes, all the usual fitness machines, a motorized climbing wall, and even a custom bike shop.
They have a small locker room with showers and towels provided. Just check with the desk staff to get a locker key.
Yoga classes w/ Gioconda have been very good. She's continuing "Healing in Yoga" style classes that used to be at Casa De Luz (She trained under Murti and Brigette). Castle Hill has a handful of Yoga teachers and they offer a range of classes from Hatha to Ashtanga to Vinyasa.
Yoga classes are quite reasonably priced (less than $10 a class with a 20 class card). In fact this may be one of the least expensive Yoga options in town - especially since you can use any of the other facilities when you visit for your yoga class. -

I really enjoyed working out here when I lived in Austin. It did help that it was paid for by work, but the yoga and pilates were great. I really enjoyed the classes and many of them were free. They offered many that were an additional fee too. The best yoga teacher is Giaconda.
The owner seems to like to try different types of equipment. They have one of those pads that jiggle your fat away (for an extra fee), a revolving rock climbing wall, a bull torso to ride and tone your abs, a revolving jacob's ladder, straps and hooks to hang from the walls in yoga, and lots more.
The place is pretty small, but square footage is well utilized. All different ages of patrons and an overall fun place to be.Listed in: Favorite Spots in Austin

I LOVE this gym! I don't have a membership, but I should. Maybe after I graduate, get out of debt and have something that resembles a steady income...
I've only taken classes/series here: Mini Boot Camp (my first CHF experience thanks to Informal Classes), an abs class and an intro to pilates equipment series.
The instructors are awesome and incredibly friendly. The classes are amazing. The gym is small, but in a nice, cozy way (and they don't lack equipment for the size of the gym). The locker rooms are nice too (you basically just have to bring a change of clothes) - complete with a sauna. My only complaint is that it tends to get crowded during the peak times = difficult parking and a possible wait for the showers. Other than that this place ROCKS.
I wish had the money for a private trainer... Maybe one day...Listed in: Reasons Why I Love ATX, Make Me Pretty, Work It

I love Castle Hill. Love it, love it, love it. It's the gym to go to if you're an athlete who wants to prevent injury and improve performance by training with weights or taking Pilates classes.
The equipment is top-notch and well-maintained, and the trainers are great. I feel a lot more confident about weight training knowing that Tara is keeping an eye on me and will tell me if I'm doing something that could lead to injury, even if I'm just working out, not doing a session with her.
The front desk staff is awesome, too. Just getting greeted by friendly, happy people puts one into a good mindset for the rest of one's workout.
Castle Hill is a bit more expensive than the big box gyms, but I feel like I'm getting far more than I pay each month. I actually *want* to go there, and it's small and homey enough that people know me and notice when I haven't been in a while. This is not the sort of gym that depends on lots of people signing up in January and then never going again. -

Dear Castle Hill Fitness,
ever since I moved away from Austin, I found myself in the route of finding a similar place like you but in vain.
Besides the GRE of UT Austin, you are the love of my fitness life. You look so tiny at first glance but contains much more fun than I'd ever imagine. All those "secret" rooms on the main and second floor are always full of surprises. Although I never got to try any of the yoga, martial art, or spinning class, they are cool enough by just looking at the.......equipments.
I am also fond of your full figure in terms of weight training machines, more-than-I-ever-need volume of dumbbells, innovative workout equipments, such as stairmaster and rock climbing treadmill, and most importantly, your clean smell - it just reminds me much of the Whole Food and Central Market - you know, the type of Austin organic scent.
Gotta love your changing/shower room as well. I guess i am very spoiled by you so every time when i being a cheap ass using da 7 days free trial at 24 hrs fitness, I feel like a 2nd class citizen.
Btw, even your gym membership badge seems to be quite "upbeat" too, another plus.
In any case, I wish you all well and maybe we can get together some time at Austin Java? -

I did a month-or-so trial a few months ago. Overall, its a fairly thorough gym, with very nice front desk staff, and exceptional yoga teachers. But its also very gimmicky, and way overpriced. Although the gym is viable, for the price they expect you to pay, the bathrooms are woefully lacking. Minimalist, low quality showers and sink area.
I found they were very nickle-and-dimey, to try to squeeze every dollar out of you. Good luck guys. -

Holy Schwarzenegger, if there were door-to-door salesmen for Castle Hill Gym memberships, I could sell them.
I've been a member for about 3 months now and I freaking love this gym. Here's why: The gym is small, but has plenty of equipment for all and I've never ever had to wait for anything. It's bigger then it looks because there is an upstairs and lots of other seemingly hidden rooms stashed about the building.
The people here make the gym-- so friendly, encouraging, and not the snotty gym type. And there are all kinds and ages of people here, meaning you don't have to be hot and thin or have trendy gym clothes to join. It's very homey.
The locker room is extremely clean, friendly (again) and has everything you need--towels, razors, toothbrushes, hair products, blow driers, cotton balls, etc...
My favorite part about Castle Hill is the classes. The instructors are fun, the classes are small (and SO hard), and the rooms are great. For example, there is a yoga room that is beautiful painted and decorated to be relaxing and conducive to meditation. They have all kinds of great equipment too-- a moving rockwall, a jacob's ladder, crazy pilates machines, and other weird devices that I'm sure are cool but haven't yet explored.
Anyway. It's great. Ask for Vlad and get a free trial. -

Get a massage by John Steinle at Castle Hill, he's crazy good.
My girlfriend went for a massage last month (after a string of 100 hour workweeks) and said it was the most relaxing massage ever. She told me I had to try him out; then I hurt my back playing volleyball and figured it was time. He did a great job, even spending extra time to make sure I was feeling better.
I have had a lot of deep-tissue massages and they usually are either ineffective or really hurt during the session. John is able to give a deep, therapeutic massage that is also pleasant and relaxing.
I'm not a member of Castle Hill, just went there for the massage. So don't worry if it isn't your fitness club, you can still get a great massage. -

Update: After posting the following on yelp and filling out the online feedback form for Castle Hill fitness, I was immediately contacted to resolve my issues. They were very concerned with my unhappiness with their gym and wanted to resolve my issues quickly and to fit my needs. I appreciate Celeste's hard work, she assessed my situation and canceled my membership with no penalty and is giving me a $90 credit to purchase a class pass. I am very happy about this. Now I can attend yoga at any time, and not have to worry about paying extra on top of my membership to do so.

I have a membership at Castle Hill fitness and I regret signing up. My number one complaint is the yoga class schedule. At Castle Hill, there are two types of classes, ones that are free to members and ones that cost additional money to attend, member or nonmember. The "free to members" classes however, are usually only offered in the mid morning or early afternoon, not when a normal full-time employee is available to work out. I feel like this gym caters to housewives and women who don't work. I am already being over charge for my monthly membership fee, $69 a month!! And then I have to pay an additional $8 every time I want to go to yoga, because like I said, the classes that are free to me are only happening when I'm a work.
Additionally, the locker room is tiny and the dry sauna is even smaller, it fits four uncomfortably.
On a positive note, I throughly enjoy their yoga classes and wish I could afford to attend, maybe one day I'll become the Castle Hill housewife we all aspire to become. -

Nice and very clean facilities but pretty pricey. I consider this a boutique gym based on the pricing and amount of space. I think the pilates class is awesome, and the equipment is brand new and in great condition. The instructor Stephanie is also great at helping you understand pilates and just have an overall good time.

The rarest of the rare: a gym that inspires me to exercise. I have been a member of Castle Hill Fitness for almost two years and it has kept me interested the whole time. The gym is always clean, the machines are up to date and consistently repaired/maintained, and the staff is very friendly. I love the pilates classes and private instruction - Kristina is a wonderful instructor.

I usually go to Juan's Mysore style yoga class it's one of the most true Ashtanga classes in Austin. That said, strict ashtanga can be a little boring to me. But if you're after the perfect style and technique and you're hardcore, I suggest going to his classes. It's probably not the best style for a once a week practicer or a senior citizen, because it requires some dedication. They have a good varied selection of weekend workshops as well. I'm glad someplace in Austin is committed to the traditional way of yoga. The dressing rooms are nice, although a little crowded during rush hour. I had some major problems with some of the new front desk staff, but I don't think they work there anymore. The major downside of this place is that it's expensive. And what is up with the driveway up to the rooftop garage? It's worse that the I-35 on ramps.

One of a kind gym that could only be found in Austin TX, I swear they pump good energy through the air vents. I have only been to the classes, mostly yoga and they are amazing. The yoga rooms have a harmonious feel and exudes yoginess. All the instructors are extremely knowledgeable and super cool, they always make you feel comfortable even if you totally don't know what you are doing. I tell everyone to Castle Hill and try it out, they offer a 2 weeks free trial membership so there are no excuses. Don't forget about the small cafe next door that offers super healthy and delicious snacks/meals/drinks. See you there!

I love my gym, but I'm admittedly a mainly "class" taker. The fitness, pilates, and yoga classes have stellar instructors which make the gym worth the money. The equipment is also innovative in areas but the in-gym spa is likely an unneeded use of gym space that could've expanded a class room to include more people. Although I know cheaper other gyms are available, I've seen substantial and consistent results from the training staff I've had the pleasure to banter with during my year plus membership. Support staff is also really nice and attentive, taking comment cards and doing their best, upon request, to resolve any issues. I wish there were more classes, especially at times for people who work a regular 8-5, but I must admit I've tried most of the big gyms in Austin and this one is best (and well worth the cash if you actually go).

The best gym I've belonged to. Period.
"The Castle" is a place for people who care about their health and bodies to get some real, genuine work/play done. Some complain about the size, but I really value the intimate atmosphere and the smartly efficient use of a downtown space (unlike the massive, boxy suburb gyms). Others dispute the price, but what better to invest in than one's health? The VIP membership is an absolute STEAL if you intend to take classes (you will not, in fact, find a better deal in town or elsewhere). Additionally, it seems that people take issue with the hours of operation, but here is what I have to say to them: Get some bloody sleep. The occasional masochist may think they need to go pump iron at 2am, but most active folks who actually seek better health realize that engaging in an unhealthy sleep cycle probably isn't a great start. In my opinion, people should allow their bodies to wind-down, naturally, in the later evening hours...not look to crack into a late-night cardio circuit (graveyard workers, change jobs).
In addition, the staff is friendly and educated, the facilities are VERY CLEAN, always, and the equipment offerings are the perfect mix of traditional and alternative. Finally, if you have time, get a massage. The therapists are all legitimately studied and very reasonably priced.
I love this gym, and I tell everyone interested in finding one. -

Wow! I have been a member of three gyms in the past two years and this is by far the best gym I have ever been to. Upon moving to Austin I tried out two other gyms (national chains) and found a lot to be desired. In fact, one of the most obnoxious aspects was that both the other gyms had awful parking situations where I would spend at least 15 minutes just looking for a spot in the cramped lots. I digress. Castle Hill is the best gym in Austin, easily. Usually I judge a gym solely by the classes they offer but Castle Hill has so many small little extra touches that all add up and are worth mentioning. First, as mentioned before, parking is not a problem. Second, the staff is so friendly! Not annoying, gym rat friendly but sincere friendliness which is so refreshing in this day and age of poor customer service. Third, the facility itself is somehow NEVER crowded - even at peak times. Almost every other gym I have been a member of was super busy after work, but for some reason I have never noticed crowds. In fact, it is often strangely unoccupied (not complaining though)! Fourth, the classes are amazing! They offer everything from pilates to zumba to bosu classes to kickboxing to yoga to spinning, etc. I am actually a certified pilates instructor and found the pilates classes to be impressive. Plus, reformer and other machine classes are included with membership whereas a single class with pilates machines usually runs at $30 a pop - at a minimum. I am not a big yoga person but they have extensive yoga offerings with two studios and offer almost every type of yoga as well. I was really impressed with the strength training and cardio classes I took with Hilary. I hadn't been challenged in a while and her classes are really hard, but also really worth it. Overall, I couldn't recommend Castle Hill more! The price is a bit more than a national chain gym but it is COMPLETELY worth it. The space is beautiful, clean and friendly and if you attend the classes you will definitely notice a physical change soon enough!

I've been at Castle Hill for about 6+ months? It's safe to say that I never, ever tire of this place. Over time, everyone becomes familiar to you. You know who is a regular on which days and who isn't, you become accustomed to the personalities of the trainers, and the front desk staff will always remember who you are/what classes you take/what your interests are. This gym also has every thing you could possibly want. If you're a runner like me, their treadmills are spectacular. If you want to run down to the lake, you can park your car, stretch out in the gym, run, come back, and take a class. If you want to go Yoga, they have about 25+ classes by some of the best yoga teachers in the country (i.e. Christina Sell). Pilates is by far my favorite and Castle Hill has the best to offer in Austin - they have 6 reformers, 2 Cadillacs, AND mats. The classes are outstanding and the teachers are the BEST. If you take a class with Stephanie you won't want any other teacher. My advice over all is that Castle Hill is worth the money, even if you're a student. If you want to keep up with your fitness it's by far the most comfortable place in Austin.
