I dined here for the first time the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. It was good Mexican food. I had a combo plate with a taco, enchilada and a tamale. The tamale was dry and bland and I would never get one here again. But the rest of the food was really good!
Mexican food in Fresno is not near as good as Mexican food in Texas. But for Fresno, this place rocks. And like Texas, they bring your drinks in big-ass plastic cups!! Yee haaw! Service was great and so was the food, except for the tamale!!!
I'll be hanging here.
Expect a steady stream of customers of all nationalities and from all over town to keep filing in like they are giving away free lotto tickets from the kitchen.
Watch the cars jostle and jockey for position as they come flying around the corner off Ventura to lay claim to one of the precious few parking spots in the lot.
Smell the fresh cooking 100 feet away on the street, beckoning you inside.
Grip the giant red translucent plastic Coke cups--you know the ones I'm talking about don't you? Now that is a drink.
Choose from a wide assortment of beers.
Smile at the simple perfection of the tostada appetizer and then wolf it down with fresh guac all over your face.
Marvel at how they manage to cook the tortillas perfectly--not too crispy, not too soft. Just right.
Start pouring the salsa over everything you eat as you realize that it is outstanding.
Be shocked at how (lightening) fast and friendly the service is.
Loudly proclaim that this is how traditionalized Americanized Mexican food should always be.
Come back again and again for years on end.
ay caramba!!
i love castillo's. too bad my roommate didn't take me to this place sooner!!
you can't go wrong.. choosing anything on this menu is a good decision.
the chimichangas are huge, the fajitas are the best i've had, chile rellenos are..... *drooling... oh sorrryy... even better than my abuelita's!!!!... as is everything else!!!
plus, the service is soooo fast,
i didn't even finish all of my chips and salsa (which is a surprise)
before my order came out piping hot. wtfuuh?!?!
We ate breakfast here a few times. I usually have Chile Colorado with eggs and my husband has tried several items on the menu. The decor is a bit shabby, but you forget all of that with the authentic food & good prices! The parking lot is small, but there is quite a bit of street parking on the side street. The servers are fast & provide good service. We will definitely return.
Really good, really ordinary mexican food. If you are looking for inexpensive, authentic mexican food with excellent service, this is your place. We got seated right away and were in and out of there in less than an hour. The refried beans had lots of cheese and were delicious but the chips were stale.
I would go there again. . . . if I am ever in Fresno again. . .
I have been coming here since I was a little girl. The food is authentic. Do not go for the atmosphere or expect the waitress to always take you to your seat. This place is so busy that they will just point you in the right direction. Go for good food at an unbeatable price. Arroz con Pollo is our favorite on the menu. Anyone who's born and raised here in the valley should know about Castillo's. And if you live in the valley, you should know good mexican food and your bill shouldn't be the same as if you just walked out of Ruth Crisps steak house! Castillo's gets it!! That's why they've been around for so long and have such a loyal following. Clean and always consistent with their recipes.
Great food, cheap prices.
Castillo's is the real deal...food was pretty cheap and not bad. The sodas were HUGE and only cost $1.50 and the service staff was super friendly. Within five minutes of getting our food served, three different wait staff had come by to ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything. The waitress also refreshed our chips without us having to ask and the portions were large. My husband got the arroz con pollo based on another recommendation on this site...the chicken vs. rice ratio was generous and for the money was a great deal. I had the chimichanga, also large.
The restaurant itself is pretty basic-crowded and busy - we went on a Sunday at 11:30 for lunch and it was packed, even before the after church crowd. The restrooms aren't super clean but that's ok - the food is hot and served quick.
Congrats, Fresno. You are officially the furthest north city I've ever been to (and I've pretty much been to them all) that knows Mexican food. You are further from the equator than Vegas, right?
Anyway, Castillo's is Exhibit 1. For an out-of-towner from Phoenix here on business, eating at this place made me feel at home.
Sixty second salsa service: check.
Good, hot plate of cheese enchiladas with rice and beans: check.
Guacamole tostada that comes as an appetizer with the meal: bonus check!
Unique local vibe the instant you walk in the door: check.
Conveniently located one mile from the Radisson, so I could walk off the cheese during my stroll back.
A fresno classic. Definitely worth the drive south of Shaw.
OMG the food comes so fast. You won't even be able to finish a basket of chips. I swear!
Seriously, it's so cheap...you can get out of there for under $15 a head and leave ABSOLUTELY STUFFED.
Food is very good. Price is very affordable. Service is not bad despite packed room. I'll definitely go back there if I pass by Fresno again. FYI, we ordered shredded beef burrito and carne asada, they were very good and big portions.
This is a bustling Mexican restaurant near (in?) downtown Fresno. I'm going to guess this has been some sort of family favorite for years. It certainly seemed that way when I stopped by for lunch on a Saturday.
Portions were generous and prices were reasonable. I had a (dinner-sized) plate with a carne asada taco, a tamale, and beans and rice. One cleaned plate later I was full and happy.
Completely agree with the other Reviewers, Castillo's has some good Mex food. Always full, and friendly, usually quick service.
Castillo's is the place to be during lunch time. The food is excellent, the prices are cheap, and the service is lightning fast. It's the fastest turnover I have ever seen in a Mexican Restaurant (though Las Panchas on Kings Canyon is pretty close).
I initially judge Mexican restaurants primarily on two things, Beans & Chips/Salsa. These guys pass with flying colors. Plus, with a dinner plate, they bring you a little side tostada of your choosing. I've never seen that before. Customer service oriented and consistent quality. This is a can't miss spot.
The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star is the parking. The lot is small and as you can imagine fills up fast, so if you don't beat the lunch rush, you may have to park on the street.
Best mexican restaurant by far in Fresno, Quick Service, Great authentic food, and chips and salsa are mouth watering. Service is fast and friendly
I love their mexican food. My wife and I occasionally go here for lunch and we love it. Service is quick and friendly, and their beans and rice are superb. I usually get the shrimp and it's very flavorful.
reasonably priced fast mexican food - i had the chile relleno and the batter was super thick just like my grandmother would have made.
Very good Mexican restaurant. We asked the bell man at the Radisson for a place to grab a late lunch and he led us to Castillo's. I felt like I was in a restaurant from the Mission district in S.F. The beers were cold and cheap (1.75 for domestic) and the food was good, hot, and cheap too. The service was also very quick. The only negative aspect was that we got a batch of chips that were stale. Other than that this place was great. It seemed like a family ran restaurant and wasn't updated for awhile. Also, Castillo's was packed the whole time we were there, even though the customers were coming in and going out at a very fast pace.
My second trip to this restaurant was to sample their Arroz con Pollo. It's very similar to the dish Velazco's (Prather and Sanger) serves. Marinaded chicken that seems to be dusted with flour and fried (very thin crust) which is combined with bells and onions and layer with rice, this mix and cheese and baked, then served with tortillas and beans. Yummy! I go here for lunch, and both times I was here I got in and out within a half hour. The food is good and the service is nice.
Great food, great price, great service!
