I dream about this place... My husband took me here for our second date, and I was highly suspect. I listen to James Taylor, for God's sake, what the hell am I doing in this dark, creepy dive? Eating the best damn burger ever. I am seriously neurotic about cleanliness, but I wouldn't care if they were storing the meat in old shoes as long as it tasted like this. If you are like me (slightly conservative, a little uptight about restaurants) and happen to be downtown, skip the chain places and LIVE A LITTLE!

What does Tom Waites, Gargoyles, and ground beef have in common? Yes... Casino El Camino. While out with friends last Friday the whole gang said... 'go for the burger as big as your face'. They discribed a goth bar with great meat. HMMMM... but they were right. And to my most most most pleasant surprise Tom Waites was playing. One of my favorites and I am not quite sure that I would consider him goth.. but man... he made that burger go down easy peasy! Really one of the best burger I have had in ages... hand made patties!

If Casino El Camino wanted me to birth its light-averse, artery-clogging love child, I'd seriously consider it.
It's dark. It's spartan. The burgers defy description. I have no idea what they do back there, but if it's illegal we should all turn a blind eye and let them work their art.
My other favorite thing to get there? Buffalo chicken. I looked high and low in Austin to find a decent buffalo style bit o' poultry, and this place kicks the butt of any place that SPECIALIZES in hot wings.
Remember, like any place that does a few things exceptionally well, there's going to be a wait. The good news is that the drinks come fast, so you'll be drunk and ready to eat by the time your grub is ready.

Oh yes. Burger nirvana.
Casino El Camino is a bar, with live music. I honestly couldn't tell you about the music, or much about the decor, because I have fallen in love with their hamburgers.
The burger consists of 3/4 lb of superb quality Certified Angus beef; not too lean, not too fatty. It's hand formed and griddled to perfection, and topped with your choice of a wide variety of toppings. I ordered a Chicago, topped with thick-cut bacon, cheddar cheese, and romaine lettuce. The result is about as perfect as a burger can be: Moist to the point of oozing with delicious flavor, a perfectly toasted bun, and fresh toppings in just the right proportion.
The cooks can be surly at times, but I'm sure the high priests of any temple have their moments. These guys are artists worthy of the love, adoration, respect, and fear of any loyal burger lover.
If you love burgers, you've gotta give this place a try.

This is an updated review for good ol' Casino . . .
I have loved coming here since I made the wonderful college job choice of 6th Street Door Guy. I love the chill, dark interior, the spooky red beer cooler, the weird-ass movies on the tube, and especially the food. The guys in the back window are still grumpy and the burgers and nachos are intimidatingly huge, made with equal parts love and ironic hatred for the customer. But lately, the food has been less than stellar.
For the 5 years I have been eating here, the burgers were consistently juicy and tender. I usually go for the Buffalo or the Amarillo, and it was a regular occurrence to have burger juice dripping down my hand. That doesn't bother me at all. Lately, though (the past 2-3 months) the burgers have been dry and less juicy, although they retain their excellent slow-char taste. I don't know if they changed their beef or got a new cook or what, but they are approaching "hocky puck" and I dont' like it.
I will give them a few more visits on my way to shows on Red River and keep my fingers crossed for improvement to their old form, but as of now I have to give you guys a three and eat at Torchy's before I head over.

Congratulations on creating a menu item that successfully kept me in hiccup shambles for a full 24 hours. I've tried their food before, but it wasn't until I sunk my luscious lips into the Amarillo Burger that I understood what it means to pray to the heavenly father. I've eaten habanero salsa that was tamer than the serranos on that burger. I walked out of there with a burning sensation that covered me from head to toe, a very full belly of beer, and ketchup and grease stains all over my button up, a.k.a. successful evening!
I'm a pool addict (though not the greatest player), and they have a cozy lil' nest up in the attick of this bar with comfy couches and arcade games to keep your little ADD mind happy.

First review and it needed to be for Casino El Camino. I went there yesterday night after having it on my "must eat there" list for over a year. The burgers were truly something. I had a Buffalo burger and the wife had a Chicago. I had a bite of hers just to compare and the Buffalo is definitely the way to go out of both. I ordered it mild and it burned my mouth up so I can't imagine having the spicier options. I ordered fries and they were pretty ok as well as a basket companion. Very homemade taste to them, in a good way. Service was pretty horrible at the place, but I will honestly put up with anything short of chinese torture to have more of these delicious baskets of goodness.
The Food: The meat was huge and very tasty. I do not appreciate the thin patty movement, so this was a welcome change. The Buffalo has blue cheese and spicy wing sauce on it, so you get that hot and cool thing going on in your mouth. The only thing I can compare it to is Alamo's Spicy Bleu Burger, except this was way better, and I like Alamo's burgers. I just became VERY hungry.
The Service: Ok, so you order your food from a hole in the wall from the guy who's cooking your meal. This guy definitely had the Soup Nazi thing going on for him...he makes magical food that you NEED, but has the customer service skills of a wet punch in the groin. Total douche bag. But like I said before, I'll DEFINITELY deal with this man again to get my hands on one of those burgers.
The Place: Front of the bar is very dark and gothy and since I'm not 15 anymore, I didn't really dig it. Now the patio is very cool with a Mayan theme apparently. Didn't go to the Attic area where the pool tables are, but I'll check it out next time.
Cost: Burgers are about $6 a pop, which is very cheap for the size and taste of these amazing handfuls of dead cow. Drinks were very cheap as well.
Conclusion: If you're into customer service and having a waiter at your disposal and on call, you may not like this place. If you're anal about hygiene, you may not enjoy the cook handling money with the same hands he's making your burger. Now, if you don't give a hoot about any of that and plainly just enjoy burgers and cheap beers, this bar may change your life. Currently, this and the Alamo Ritz are the only reasons for me to go to 6th street.

It's loud, it's dark, it's kind of dirty - it's awesome.
Unpretentious, weird movies playing, excellent juke box selection, cheap prices, and if you're into burgers (I'm not) they're supposedly (as everyone I know says) the best in the world.
It's nothing swank, do not go here for swank, but it's cheap and sweaty and I've always had a good time :).

I need a great burger and fries and would like to wash it all down with a beer, I go to Casino, it is dark and mellow, with a kitchen that dishes out burgers, wings, and fries with an attitude as big as the serving size. My dad even digs the place. The buffalo burger is perfect with 3/4 LB of meat, hot sauce, blue cheese crumbles..what more could you need besides the hand cut french fries mum mum

Yes, that was me you saw at Casino El Camino yesterday. The only one with my natural hair color, no carabiners in my ears and no visible piercing or tattoos. The square. I was also the one drinking copious amounts of Blue Moon and getting down and dirty with a K.C. Burger and enjoying the end of Monty Python & the Holy Grail and the beginning of Buck Rogers along with songs coming from the jukebox that I'd never heard before. (My husband didn't fit in very well either with his Polo shirt and Tommy Bahama cap.)
Food: Awesome Certified Angus Burger with the perfect amount of toppings (bbq sauce, cheese, onions).
Service: A little bit of 'tude from the guy taking my food order but hey I look weird so it was to be expected. Barkeep was attentive and hilarious to boot.
Atmosphere: I loved the big painting of the naked lady above the long mirror, the stone floor and the general sense that I was in a hamburger-making deity's secret underground lair.
2 Burgers and one side of fries was $14. The burgers were huge and to my great happiness, cut in half already when we received them. I can't wait to go back.

Good lord! The burgers are HUGE and amazing. One of the best places to get food before a show. The bartenders are nice and pour some seriously stiff drinks. Nothing better than hanging out on the patio, having burgers and drinks with friends. The crowd is such a melting pot too, that i love.
Casino's is my default bar in town. I have known Casino and some of the other staff from their pre-Austin days. No one has a better juke box, a better burger, better wings, friendlier bartenders, or stronger drinks. Bottom line, the place kicks ass. I even brought my mom here, but she wasn't into the goth-y place all that much. There have been one or two occasions when the outdoor wait staff left much to be desired,, but this is very, very rare and not enough so that it will change my opinion of the place over all. I love coming here in the afternoon for a drink, a burger and great conversations. And as a plus, I met the love of my life here (in a bar??? My last expectation, who would have thought!!!). Not really a pick up bar, or at least not in the afternoon. I try to avoid 6th Street on the weekends as a rule.

I really like this bar. I feel I am slumming it when I come here, but I come here when I am downtown and feel more comfortable here than in most bars. Casino is: a place to hang out with a group of friends at a table and have drinks served right there at the table (and at least one of the waitresses will flirt with your man and not even bother looking at YOU). Casino is not: a yuppy oasis, a hip-hop club, a meat market, or a great place to eat (unless you enjoy addictive cheese fries that are especially sumptuous and fulfilling after a few drinks). Holy crap, the drinks are strong and the bartenders at the bar are generally human. I highly recommend this to people who want an authentic Austin experience and who value a stellar jukebox selection. I do not recommend it to people who actually like the rest of 6th street--don't even bother.

Dear everyone I've ever raved about the Casino El Camino burger to:
I'm sorry. So very, very sorry. I promise you they used to be much better - not the burned to a crisp, completely devoid of any trace of juiciness, stale-bunned holocaust I had the other night. Coupled with a stingy pour, it should be zero stars - but I'll cede one to the (still) stellar jukebox.

Alright, this is my first ever review on Yelp.com, despite reading it all the time. I simply felt compelled to write a review after visiting this place.
Simply put, this place rocks.
I was born and raised in Austin and currently live here studying at UT. I'm only 21 so I don't have much bar / 6th St. experience, but I've eaten at many restaurants around Austin. I say with conviction that the burger I had here was hands down the best I've ever had in Austin. The thing was humongous, medium-rare (I ain't afraid of no bacteria), spiced and condimentted properly. I had the Chicago, but based off all the reviews here I'll try the Amarillo next.
My girlfriend and I went here with about 7 other friends and had excellent service. While I don't doubt that it can take upwards of an hour or so to get your burger, we were lucky and got ours in under a half hour.
The pitcher beer on tap was a bit disappointed. They only had Guiness, Blue Moon, and Shiner. I unfortunately forgot to check out their bottle selection, so I don't know how their selection is. Their pitcher selection is the ONLY reason I'm giving them 4 stars. They should at least get some Independence Bootlegger or something on tap.
The ambiance and decor were great. While I'm not goth or punk at all, it was very comfortable. I spent 98% of my time outside or upstairs playing pool, so I while can't really speak on the TVs or jukebox, the fact that another reviewer saw them playing Bladerunner on the TVs is definitely a thumbs up.
While I'm not really into 6th St., this is a place I will definitely be visiting many times again in the future.

Casino makes some of the best burgers I've ever eaten. When I'm craving a burger from Casino, only a burger from Casino will do. They do get crowded, Friday and Saturday nights in particular, this will result in a long wait for food. They can also be a bit uneven; I've had the occasional very well done and rare varieties served. My advice is to avoid the crowds, get yourself a tasty beverage to kill time while you wait, be grateful towards the kitchen staff, sit outside if the weather permits and keep a positive attitude that what you are about to eat will be nothing short of a masterpiece. Enjoy.

I've heard the legend of the Casino El Camino burgers for a couple of years now. I used to have an assistant (Jackie, are you out there?) who raved about this place. But I'm not a big 6th street guy so I'd never been.
Before the Yelp 2008 Lift-Off party, Camron asked if I wanted to check it out, so we did. Cool place, dark atmosphere... made me wish I still drank and smoked.
But instead I sat at the bar with Camron and ate a burger. Maybe my expectations were too high... but if I were to have given an award for "hottest piece of meat," it certainly wouldn't have gone to the burger.

Wow, I was not expecting this from the outside.
After a night of partying downtown, one of my friends pleaded that we go to Casino el Camino for one of the burgers. "Best I've ever had", he claimed. I wasn't sure whether I believed him or not, but, what the hell, let's go anyways.
After hearing all the Euro trash and shitty pop/punk music at the bars all night, this place was a welcome change. People actually play good music on the jukebox! After getting verbally violated by the cook, we grabbed a beer and waited for our food outside. It can take awhile, but it's well worth it. The buffalo burger is amazing, as is the Pitts burger. Perfect way to end the night.
Highly recommended.

When it comes to a good burger, I almost always go for a good, greasy, thin pattie. So until I tried out a Casino burger, I used to only go the the Crown and Anchor for their cheap as hell good bar food! Aside from all the hype about this place, I loved my burger, fat pattie and all!! So far I've been three times, and I always get the same kind (the one with the green chillies on it). Every time I have been utterly satisfied! I like to go on Sundays now when there is no crowed and my girl and I can enjoy a tall, cool pilsner and fat burger while watching a cohen bros. flick on their tv above the bar. Sure it's dark, sure it's downtown on sixth st., but on a hot Sunday afternoon after a dip at the springs, it's my new favorite place to be!

My favorite 6th street bar, because it doesn't feel like you're on 6th street. It feels like you're in an alternate dimension founded by Johnny Cash and Rob Zombie, and you're eating the best burger you've ever had while you're there.
In a town full of vegetarians and beer snobs, it's nice to see a place that will serve you a 3/4 lb. burger that the cook packed himself from giant rolls of ground chuck that you can see from the ordering window, and a place where you can order a Lonestar or PBR without being scoffed at, and pay for em both with a $10 and still get change back.
Wind up for and wind down from a show at Emo's or Stubbs with a beer and burger from Casino El Camino. Be warned, your burger may take 30 minutes. But it's worth it.
Recommended:
the Pittsburger (mushrooms, swiss, & A1)
the Kansas City burger(cheddar, BBQ sauce, and an onion ring)

I met the owner 14 years ago and was really impressed with his business professionalism. He has always done it his way and has exceeded over 95 percent of the bars on Old Pecan Street in longevity. The atmosphere is the best. The bartenders are excellent, just look at the following and finally the burgers are awesome. They take awhile, but they are worth every minute of the wait. This is probably my favorite "restaurant" in town. Yes, you order your food through a little hole in the wall, and it's often times extremely loud, but the burgers are worth it. This is the first place I take out-of-towners to. I even took my 63 year old dad here and he couldn't stop talking about how good the burgers were afterwards.
If you're not in the mood for beef, you can replace it with chicken, and I would still consider them the best chicken sandwiches in town. I often times will ask for 1/2 pound because the normal 3/4 pound burger with fries is just too much food for me. My favorite is probably the Pitts or Chicago burger. I love spicy food, but the Amarillo burger is just way too hot for me. They also make some of the best Spicy Bloody Marys in town here that come with a big stick of celery. One of the best jukeboxes in town as well.
One thing to keep in mind is if it's a really busy night, it might take a good hour or more to get your burger. Thankfully they are always playing awesome movies on the TVs above the bar.

My experience at Casino el Camino was similar to Tess V's: "Good but nothing that knocked my socks off."
Three of us went Friday night after hearing a lot of good things about the burgers there. It was probably 8:30 or so when we got there. The atmosphere was strange: gothic/fraternity house decor and a vibe that seemed to suggest a young crowd, although everyone there looked to be over 30 (not that there's anything wrong with that). Music was turned up to that volume that forces you to shout to your friends, even when they're sitting next to you. CD jukebox seemed to have a pretty good and pretty diverse selection, judging by what we heard while we were there. Draft beer selection was small, but the prices were decent.
When we ordered, we were pretty surprised when we were told that the wait was going to be an hour and a half. My friend looked around at the size of the crowd, noticed that there was room for more burgers on the grill, and commented that he could probably make a burger for every single person in the bar in about an hour. Figuring it would take us a while to finish the fresh beers we had ordered, walk back to our car and find another place to eat, we decided to go ahead and order.
Two of us ordered the Chicago burger, while I ordered an Amarillo. Food came out in about 1 1/4 hours. Beef itself was so-so, and the burgers, which were supposed to be cooked medium unless we requested something else (we didn't), were much closer to well done. What we had read earlier suggested the burgers were big, but the 3/4 pounds of beef got much smaller after all of the moisture was cooked out of them. Even my wife, who is pretty small and doesn't eat very much, finished her burger and wasn't really that full. The best thing about my burger was the topping -- decent cheese and a nice kick from the roasted serrano peppers.
Honestly, I thought the burgers at Billy's on Burnet were better, and those weren't anything to do back flips over. What I look for in a burger is good quality beef that isn't over-mixed, patties that aren't too thin and that are cooked as requested. Hopefully, in this state of great beef, I'll find what I'm looking for. Next to try, based on comments, will probably be Artz Rib House.

I will not go to 6th street for many things, but I will go there for Casino. I nearly lived there when I first moved to Austin. The atmosphere reminds me of the (now defunct) Rathskeller in Boston, and the food is great. Prior to becoming a vegetarian, I loved their wings. Now, I will make a special trip just to have their Blackjack eggplant sandwich. They have a great jukebox, and are usually showing some interesting movie on the televisions (instead of sports!)

I work in the 6th street area... so Camino El Camino is but a few feet away. One of my clients told me I had to try one of their burgers. So... I made arrangements to do so. After reading Yelp reviews, I feared it might be too inconvenient a venture. I, as of lately, only carry credit/debit cards. My banks ATM is about .6 miles away from my job, roundtrip. AND, Casino would not allow me to call my order in. So I'd have to go to the ATM, get money, and get back to Casino to place my order, and then wait an hour to get my food.
However, I thought I'd be bold. My break came tonight and I took myself over to Casino, credit card in hand, and said, "I want a Chicago Burger!" The order taker could tell I was anticipating some sort of rejection on the grounds that credit cards are not acceptable, and he seemed a little embarrassed. He took it upon himself to be extremely kind to me. He took my card, and escorted me to the bar to pay for my food. NO crazy minimum or take out charge. It was GREAT!!!
The only awkward part about my visit is that I was on my lunch break and I chose not to get a drink. So there I sat at the bar, totally in the way of everybody who was trying very hard to get drunk. It was only about 15 minutes before my name was called... the burger was ready!!! I was very happy.
I realized I'd been to Casino several years ago with a few friends. This bar is very cool. I remember the drinks were dirt cheap on my last visit a few years ago, and that I was barely able to walk out because I'd drank so much. I highly recommend this place if you are a nice person with a kind attitude. It's that kind of place. And there is no shortage of friendly guys there, which I happen to like, alot ;o)
Casino keeps it real.
10 STARS!!!
*** Regarding the burger... really good. My granny owned a grill in Houston many years ago, and the flavor of my burger brought back memories of my grannies burgers. They come off of a seasoned grill, so they have that nice, toasty, burntish flavoring that you could never get anywhere, but at a little bar type grill... ANYWHERE. It's the real deal that makes you realize that McDonald's is not actually selling hamburgers. Casino has hamburgers!! The fries were real. Which shouldn't be that special, but we all know that a french fry that is actually recognizably potato is a very rare thing. It's a big portion, but if you are hungry, it's just an average meal. Go for the full sized burger.!

Hands down my favorite bar on the main drag of east 6th, as it is never populated by the college or drunk idiot scene. They have an outstanding jukebox, a great beer selection, and friendly bartenders. Cool dark ambiance, with TV's playing classic and sometimes bizarre movies for a cool change-of-pace on visuals. Great outdoor court atmosphere in the back as well. As for the food, the burgers are to die for, but I'm typically there for a few relaxing drinks.

This is one of my favorite dives in Austin. Parking sucks (only because it is downtown), but if you are up for a burger tastier than any Big Kahuna burger, look no further. The best of the menu in my humble opinion, are the Amarillo and Buffalo burgers. Don't forget to wash it all down with your choice of tasty beverages from the bar. Don't fret if you have to wait a few minutes for service. They do you just as quickly as they can.
Vegans... don't bother. Mother's might be a better bet, although without the ambiance or primal satisfaction.
Others... don't wait another weekend. Forget about lent and indulge. There's always confession, right? (no offense intended, just trying to make a point).

Well, Casino El Camino does not disappoint. I had the buffalo (cheese) burger and it was fantastic. A full bar and 30+ beers in bottle, with three on tap (Shiner, Blue Moon, and something else) help to complement your choice of meats. Good stuff, check it out if you're a burger snob ... Good but nothing that knocked my socks off!
I've heard from so many people that this is THE best burger in Austin and I have to disagree.
I decided to see what all the hype was about one night and ordered the K.C. burger and my boyfriend ordered the Amarillo burger.
K.C. burger = hickory burger ( BBQ sauce, grilled onions and cheddar cheese)
Amarillo burger = southwest burger (serrano chilis, jalapeno jack cheese and cilantro mayo)
The burgers were thick, which I prefer; however, they were cooked a little long which made them semi-tough. I must say that these folks do a good job of picking toppings. The Amarillo burger is spicy and unexpected. I appreciate the creativity.
I wouldn't recommend taking Mom here while in town unless she's uber cool. The atmosphere is a little stale and gothic. Personally, I like more light but I'm not a punker!
I was a little put off by the bartender who kept wiping his nose and then drawing fresh beers and handing them out without washing his hands. Yek!
I'm sure I will go back and try the burgers again as this could have been an off night. (Everyone has those!)

Another one of those bars that's totally on the beaten path, and somehow remains a totally great spot to chill out and wet yer whistle. I'm also told they have amazing fabulous burgers, though I'm not a meat eater so I can't personally vouch. I can, however, personally vouch for reclining, beverage in hand, on the garden patio. The Bar: This is a pretty decent dive bar. They've got several pool tables, a very well stocked juke box, some arcade machines, a patio out back and several TV's. I just ordered a beer so I can't comment on the drinks, but the bar staff was friendly and professional. The place has a dark, sort of gothic/south American atmosphere, complete with a glowing eyed gargoyle watching over the bar. Definitely a cool place to go if you want to avoid the typical drunken, gyrating, teen/college crowd.
The Burger: Overrated. Sorry. Deal with it. It's good certainly, but not the best. My personal Austin favorite comes from The Tavern and I've had a very nice one from the Hyde Park Bar & Grill. The thing about Casino's is that it's sort of plain. The meat is there, but it wasn't particularly flavorful. It just tasted like a large, greasy, hunk of ground up cow. Definitely better than Top Notch, Fran's/Dan's, Dirty's and even Hut's, but if I'm going out just for a burger, I'll probably go somewhere else.
Finally went to Casino El Camino earlier this evening before hitting up the Alamo for the One Hit Wonders of the '90s singalong..... Amarillo burger was very good and very spicy and it only took about 15 min. for them to make (granted, it was a late Thursday night). Drinks were cheap and strong enough. Definitely a place that I'll go back to despite the 6th St. address.
The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is because the Megatouch Photo Hunt isn't the soft-core porno version, and that's just not as fun. Not by a long shot, my friends.
