I hate this place now. They changed the staff, they changed the menu, they changed the beer, they changed the prices. How can something that was once so good, turn out to be so bad. Everytime I go I say "I hate this place, but I am going to give it one more chance." CASEY's!! Why won't you let me love you? Why must your beer be warm? Not just tap beer, your bottled beer is warm. YOUR BEER IS WARM!!!!!!" I get sick drinking warm hefeweizen. A dollar off beer during happy hour is not so happy! How could you do this to yourself? Im never coming back. 2 stars because I loved you before, it is hard to forget the past.

Nice underground bar (by that I mean under the ground...well, okay...down the stairs at least), wood all around. Reminds me of a NY bar a little. It's dark. But I like dark, so it's all goood...

I guess when my boy came here before (like 2-3 years ago?) they used to have techno on friday nights, but they don't do that kind of thing anymore (AWWWWWWW)...It seems way "WE ARE AN IRISH BAR DAMNITT" right now...

But I like the Irish, so I like this bar.

And I also like how it's not directly on the street...makes me wonder what else Downtown has to offer, what other bars are lurking in the shadows, yeah? Still, it's a cool space. They should get more music down there so that we can listen...mmmhmmmmmm...

Drunken review #5:

"Hey everybody, let's go watch the Lakers play the Celtics at a Downtown bar!" This happened twice in one month.

I like beer, food and cities. Welcome to Casey's.

Irish sports bar with a little bit of the Downtown vibe. The food ain't too bad and the vibe is actually pretty mellow. Not the place for a gentleman to pick up a special-lady-friend for the evening but the opposite may be true for ladies. After all, we men are much easier to hunt for when we have congregated at a bar like fish in a barrel.

Onions rings make beer SOOO much better!

This is our lil NY Irish pub smack in the middle of the financial area of downtown.   Underground, huge wooden bar, and I hear great jazz bands that play during the week.

A couple years ago...this area was dead, and kinda scarry past 9 PM.  (Downtown just got its first 7-11 just around the corner...yah, it was a huge deal. ) Now that the uber cool urban dwellers are making their way into the area  - the place is still a great place to get a drink after work, or hell even on a weekend now.   They pour strong, dont have annoying club music on, and 80s hair band songs still come on and get everyone to sing along.

Now how often does that happen in LA?

11:00 am; Entering Casey's to see Holland play France for the Euro Cup 2008. The crowd starts to fill the building, mostly business people watching the game during lunch. Not really a soccer fanatic bunch of people, except one guy with ... off course Dutch gear.

We ordered some coffee and the usual refill soda's, and a Tri-Tip BBQ sandwich, it was tasteless, so was the cowl-slaw only good thing on that plate were the fries. Strangely, I felt like they wanted us out of the establishment, I do not know for sure, but the waiter gave us that vibe. Maybe cause we were not spending enough, but again we are Dutch ;). I thought this is an Irish pub?!

Even though Holland beat France with 4:1, it's not the place I will watch my next game...

Good downtown bar- it is set below street grade in the basement level but still has a patio area out front. Food is british isles pub fare, but good and starchy. They have a decent happy hour and it is so nice to see the after work / downtown residents pour in at 5. makes me feel all warm inside.

Um, this place is fine for watching a football game.  That's what I was doing at the timk, but I can't imagine why I would ever go back.  The hot wings were pretty great, which redeemed it.  Bar was eh if I remember correctly.  And you know, the food was bar food.

I heart this place.

Don't get me wrong, Lucky Baldwin will always have a special place in my heart, but in my humble opinion, this place has such better overall vibe and fish and chips than Lucky Baldwin.  There is a private room in the corner reserved for larger party, "Casey's Office".  The oval table will make you feel like you are having a "sit down" in one of the Sopranos episodes.  The waitstaff here is a lot more helpful as well.  A must-visit for folks looking for happy hour downtown.

I declare Casey's my favorite downtown watering hole. Well, at least for Wednesday nights. Why? Because free bar cash seems to come my way without much effort. How, you ask? I'll tell you...

Which sitcom character worked at Prendergast Tool & Die Co.? In what Charles Dickens novel did the character Uriah Heep appear? How many "branches" does a snowflake have?

All you have to do is answer questions like these for 90 minutes and not let the rowdy bunch on the other end of the bar take your lead. That's how.

I haven't had this much nerd fun since I discovered the Super Trivia machine at Dave & Busters.

As a bonus, trivia night overlaps with happy hour, inhibiting your abilities to recall useless information and making the game that much more challenging!

So, do you know the first four names mentioned in Madonna's "Vogue"?

Have you ever had a friend that you wish would just quit being an asshole?
Well Casey's is that friend,, I am praying for someone to come along and get rid of the warm guiness poured too quickly and the idea that ST. Patricks day means drinkng out of plastic cups with office douchebags who can't hold their liquor.
For such a good space they really drop the ball. Here  are some recommendations: 1.  Teach your staff how to pour a guiness, 2.  Have the Guiness be at least 45 degrees not bath water, and 3rd Have an actual Irish Menu.
I love irish Bars and I hate Casey's, no stars if possible.
PS. Girls don't go in there there are complete dirt bags lurking.

I haven't spent much time here, but from what I've seen, I like it. Feels like a piece of Dublin in our own backyard. My only qualm was the pouring of the Guinness. Not to standard. But I enjoyed the music, the old bar atmosphere, the patio, the crowd, and the company. Though I didn't try it, the food looked fantastic.

Caution: You will be bitched out by bartenders.

I went to Caseys last Friday and was at first really impressed with its charm and atmosphere.  Before it got crowded I ordered a drink from the very frantic bartender and sat outside in the subground patio area with friends.

I give this place 2 stars because the bartenders ruined my experience.  They were insanely disorganized and scrambling everywhere, making it feel like they didn't know how to run the bar.  A girl I knew from college came up next to me and yelled at a bartender somewhat obnoxiously begging for a drink.  Enter heinous female bartender.

Beware of the wirey red-headed female bartender covered in tattoos.  She turned to us and snapped, "If you keep acting like that you're gonna get served last." After waiting 1/2 hour for a drink and still getting no service, as the bartenders were clearly ignoring the middle section of the bar and only working the ends, I tried to get her attention for a drink, again she snapped "You're going to be served last if you act that way."  Act what way? I was politely getting her attention and she treated me as if I was an obnoxious drunk.  I would have left but my tab was open and I needed to close it.  I finally snagged another bartender to get me beers and asked him to close my tab.  He gave me the beer but never closed my tab.  When I asked again he passed it off on the devil bartender.  So I regretfully had to pester her - she whips around and growls that she doesn't have my card, to which I have to assert that I opened the f-ing tab with her.

So an hour later after taking much abuse I finally had a beer at Casey's.  If this place had even decent waitstaff I would love to go again for the aesthetics, but the people who work there are not only flustered and chaotic, the are openly rude and disrespectful.  I'd rather take my money elsewhere than pay this psycho hosebeast to pour me a drink.

Here is my take on Casey's, handily divided by category:

Atmosphere: You walk down the steps and you're on a patio but still under cover. Brick laid with nice tables and you can see the bar. Very comfortable and big enough to hold large parties. Inside is dark with a heavy wood bar that is stunning. The place looks just like what it should look like. It's not divey at all, just dimly lit.

Bar: Good drinks, reasonable prices for Downtown. I haven't done a lot of drinking there so I can't speak too much to this.

Food: A nice menu. Not to big, not to small. A lot of food from the British Isles (as the name may imply.) Most of the food is good but not great. I've had the pulled pork sandwich which I thought was a little to vinegary and the ruben which didn't have enough corned beef on it. Again, it's not bad, it's just not awesome.

Service: Both time I've eaten has been for lunch with a group so I don't think this would apply to say, a couple eating together. But the service was really really crappy. It took our group about an hour to get all of our food out to us. They never checked to see if we wanted anything afterwards and just weren't very helpful in general. So that's mainly where the one of the stars comes off (the other is from just OK food.)

Conclusion: A great watering hole especially late night. If you're going with a small number for dinner, you'll be good.

They need to improve both their food and service and this place would be top notch. And actually if they just changed their service it would make up for the food enough. Atmosphere is great. Please don't change that!

On a balmy night, we strolled down a flight of stairs to Casey's which has a large patio.  It's allegedly an old bar (for L.A.) and the stamped tin ceilings would attest to this claim (why don't they make buildings like this anymore). lots of dark wood and beer. Not sure if this typical clientle, but one woman was wearing an extremely low cut top and high cut shorts with high heels (a la Ashley Dupre). Her male friend grabbed her boob and she acted offended...sort of.

Had a fun time here yesterday afternoon, the place was packed, people wearing green, hot chicks, wall street types in green ties, Hell's Angels dudes in with green beards.
The bar was dark and had games of Irish soccer on the screens, the bar was packed with green beer, dark and tans. the liquid was flowing.

I'm a banker, and it's not on my priority list to hangout Downtown with other corporate mongrels longer than needed.  Albeit the fact that I do fancy Irish Bars.
However, a friend was in town and wanted to hit an Irish Bar.  OK - Casey's is down the street.
Downstairs from street level to a dungeon - hmm, nice.
Average decor, loud music, predictable crowd, and the cook was burning something.
Whatever, it was fine and the beer was good.

Then.... straight down the middle of bar, out of nowhere, 3 guys in kilts singing, bagpiping, and drumming stroll all the way through right next to everyone.  Once they reached one end of the bar, the 4th of their kilt crew then starting ripping his electric guitar - and they commenced kicking major ass.
I've honestly never wanted to start jigging like that before.  And I was only a beer deep.

I give only 1 star in the hopes that the management of the bar will read it, and make the proper fixes.

Food:  my gf and I order mini burgers, guiness stew, and fish and chips.  This isn't a resturant, so I'm not expecting much.  The Guiness Stew was horrible, tasted like it came out of a can.  Please look up a Guiness stew receipe from a UK/Irish/Australian website, make it exactly as they say, then taste the difference.  Please fix.  Fish and chips was soggy and just bad.  This dish isn't hard to do, please get a recipe for a decent beer batter, and follow instructions.  The mini burgers were fine.  The food was bad, and it was expensive.  Way too expensive for what you get.  Sometimes, you just feel like you're being taken advantage of.

Beer:  This is the main reason for the single star.  Warm beer.  2 rounds of different beers, and they were not cold, just cool.  I'm not sure if the owners were trying to save money on energy costs, but this is ridiculous.

Overall:  bad and expensive food, and warm beer.  This is not a bar that I will go to again, and will recommend to others that they should stay away as well.  Come on people, this is very simple and basic things.  If you can't even get these things right, then why should you be in business?

I've never been to NYC, but when I go to Casey's, I pretend I'm in NYC.  The mere fact that you have to walk downstairs amidst tall buildings in the middle of Downtown to get to this bar makes me wanna have 2,000 foot arms to be able to give this place a big hug.

It's dark inside and it just feels cool.  What's cooler is getting there kinda early and being able to snag a table in the "outdoor" patio, that is really outdoors, but yet it's not.

Like most people working in Downtown, Casey's is my group's main meeting spot whether for happy hour or warm-up time before getting to the ball game / party / whatevers... I've been to my fair share of pubs (hell, I lived in England for a lil while) and Casey's definitely can hold its own with the rest of em... St. Paddy's Day there gets pretty crazy as you can imagine.

I'm not really big on the food personally. It is what it is... Pub Food. A lil bit overpriced, but other people tend to fancy it. Personally the draw is the location after work hours. The patio with a Guiness (or my fav: Boddingtons) is the place to be with your friends when you're not in line waiting to grab a refill.

Too bad I wasn't here for St. Patty's day because I would love to see how this place would been really like. In many ways, I didn't get the full experience coming here.

Casey's is one of the very few places in downtown where the restaurant or establishment is located below ground level. You will have to go downstairs below a tall building to reach to this pub.

In a weird sense, this is one of the loudest bar/pub I had been to as the decimal noise level was very loud due to an overbearing stereo speakers. It's not because of crowd noise of people, but blaring sounds of loud music coming from all corners of the room. Not much people are inside the pub, but the music was still loud.

There is a happy hour at this location with drinks are at a discounted price. There are many different types of beer on tap with many different imported beers you can also order from. Never tried their mix drinks yet, I stick with the safe choice of beer (Carlsberg) at this place.

One great about coming to a pub is eating British food. Yeah, I know... everything is boiled. it's very hard for me to pass up either Bangers & Mash (Sausage and mashed potato) or lamb shank. I always tried the Bangers & Mash because of the sausage and the green peas that is provided. For a pub food, this would hit the spot.

Initially I was miffed at lack of service because I couldn't get the attention of any server, but after a bit, a friendly waitress noticed me and make the situation more bearable. In fact, she constantly and timely checked on me after the initial bust. At the end I was very happy to get an attentive service after a rough start.

Granted, there's not much difference of a pub once you see a bar and plenty of booth seats for a restaurant. The relic of the old place does bring some charm to some of the people who visited here for some good time and a cool bud.

It's a weird mix for me because there is one pool table and the place doesn't really have a pub like atmosphere. If you ask me, it's more a dive bar kind of scene. With that loud music I described, I definitely would have thought of anything but an Irish bar.

The major benefit of coming here I thought was that because of the location was below the street, it was not really crowded on most nights. It would have been a cool gathering place to down a few brew. If you are looking for a peace of mind, I wouldn't recommended it.

I am giving it a four star because I think it had potential for a nice bar scene where it's more of a dive bar atmosphere than a pub. The food is very good for a pub, but more importantly a happy hour here saves a bundle.

Now if only they can do something with loud speaker, then we are talking.

Feels like a genuine Irish pub, and could just as easily be in Boston or New York (but maybe not Limerick...), which is saying more than I could for 90% of the "Irish" pubs in LA county.

The good parts were the happy hour prices, the quality of the Guinness, the selection and taste of the food, and the dark, woody feel of the place.

The not-so-good parts were the pushy teenage waitresses and the excessive volume of the many TVs.

Overall, a good spot for an after-work beer (especially when you don't feel like sitting outside).

Add another STAR Update!!** 11/18** This place keeps getting better.  The people that work there are really great people.  Such a fun place!
__
Add a STAR Update!! ** 10/06 ** Why?  Because they have a new addition on tap - Smithwick's!!  Alright.  And I think the two fixed gears locked up outside belong to the bartenders.  This place is growing on me!!
----
Good downtown bar, but still very LA.  Not sure what that means, but it is not the part of LA that is growing on me.  When I was sitting in Casey's I kept thinking how much better it would be to be sitting in a pub in San Francisco or New York City.  No Smithwick's on tap either which is kind of weak.

We need a 1/2 star option added to Yelp.  This is really a 2.5 place, but not as bad as a two.  Anyway, it's a bar so it is not that bad, but nothing special.

Just a great bar.  Great for a post-work drink if you're downtown and while I'm not a huge fan of the food (I'm not big into greasy bar food or Irish fare) you can't beat it for downtown bar atmosphere.  They have live jazz which is fun and the staff are very friendly.  Stopped by on the way to the Lakers game on sunday and when the barmaid overheard me mention something to the bf about it being his birthday she gave us some shots on the house which were a delightful rootbeer concoction that apparently was invented by the owner and is only served at Caseys.  Bottom line our bill was only $16 for 4 guinnesses (and two free shots), pretty great.

I walk in the door to the jukebox playing "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse like it was my own personal soundtrack. I walk up and down the dimly lit bar looking for a chair and already I'm in a good mood. I order a pint of Harp and order the fish and chips. The beer comes to me warm and kind of flat. At 6PM in the summer, the bar is sparsely populated by the after work crowd. The patrons look like they are more of the  administrative help in the downtown area. There's a couple cool plasma TVs playing sports which was cool until this guy in a suit rudely changes the channel as I am watching Sports Center to the Red Sox game. I don't mind the change much but I was watching the TV and its just wrong to change the channel without even asking.

The fish and chips arrive and I am totally disappointed. They charge $13 for what amounts to fish that I could buy in the freezer section of the grocery and shoestring fries that have some weird, and definitely not Irish, seasoning. This place is not a real pub because these fish and chips suck. I finish my warm Harp and head on out.

I would have given this place 1 star but when I walked into the bathroom, the urinals have one of those box contraptions near the ceiling that reminded me of the toilet where Michael Corleone hid the gun when he whacked Sollozo and the police sergeant in the Italian Restaurant in The Godfather. And the jukebox had a great variety of music including "No Woman, No Cry," which salvaged the visit for me.

I love it when I can combine history and food and Casey's definitely has both. :)  First, a little history.

While Casey's as a bar as been around for over 30 years, the original building built in 1917 started off as a Turkish bath house and made many transformations since then, from a cafeteria than to a part bank, part private supper club. It wasn't until 1969 that Casey's as it is known today began to take shape after it was purchased by Lawrence Frank and Walter Van de Kamp, of Van-Frank Restaurant Inc.

Already famous for creating the Tam O'Shanter Inn, on Los Feliz Boulevard and the original Lawry's The Prime Rib on La Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills, these two partners now set out to create a one-of-a-kind pub that would withstand the test of time and withstand time it did.  Several owners later, Casey is still going strong and serves as Downtown's only Irish Pub.

What's cool about Casey's is that this was the first time I had to walk downstairs to get to a bar or restaurant.  Usually, if not at street level, I'll walk upstairs, so Casey's being below street level was something a little different.  When I walked in, I just fell in love with the brick entrance, dark wood wall panels, the wood booths and the pictures on the wall,  The whole place had a real nice vibe about it.

So let's talk food now.  In truth, I wasn't expecting much, but I have to say that I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my meal.  I also had tried some of the other dishes that our group ordered and found them tasty as well.

For my entree, I had the Beef & Guinness Pie which was Guinness braised beef with potatoes and carrots topped with puff pastry and I finished it to the last bite.  The beef was tender and I really liked the rich flavor of the sauce.  Beer and beef was a great combo for this particular dish.  I also liked the pastry shell.  It wasn't necessarily the lightest, flakiest pastry shell I've ever had, but it held its own.  Besides, with the hearty filling, I think that a denser pastry is appropriate.

I also sampled the Sheperd's Pie.  The mashed potato topping was nice and fluffy and the filling also had good flavor with the meat being moist and the vegetables tender and not over-cooked.  As for the Bangers & Mash, translated to Sausages & Mashed Potatoes, I had a piece of the Irish sausage and thought that the meat was spiced well. I would actually order any of these dishes on a return visit.

The only thing that I didn't care was for the dessert. I ordered their Brownie Sundae which was a warm fudge brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce.  Unfortunately, the brownie wasn't very warm and also, I didn't like its texture.  The brownie was a bit dried out, so it was a little chewy.  So I wouldn't order that again.

Overall, I had a good dining experience at Casey's and would certainly come back for a meal.  I wouldn't say that the food was mind-blowing, but for pub food, it was awesome and when you come into a bar that has a sense of nostalgia about it, how can you go wrong?

Previous reviewer Erica quoted "i never been in NYC but when I go to Casey's i prentend I'm in NYC"--Well in my case I have been to NYC and I dont need to pretend since it is such a true statement.  When you walk in you feel like you are in NYC-Frank asked me last night "well what doest it mean to be in a NYC bar versus a LA bar?"- I wish I could give an answer in one sentence but I cant.  For those people who have been in NYC or have lived there in the past they (i hope) would understand.  It is something about the ambience, the people around you that all of the sudden you said to your partner or friend next to you in the bar "it feels like NY eh" and ironically you are in the middle of downtown la.  Very relaxed joint, since it is an Irish Bar, I did Guiness, Fish and Chips and Irish coffee.(4 stars on that)
Why four stars?--The ambience, the atmosphere, people who seem your typical joe-but i bet they are lawyers or executives who bring a pair of jeans and a t-shirt to work after working hours, and they dont want to be bothered after a long stressful week.

This place could be so cool!  Sadly, it's in the very dead downtown of LA.  The underground little Irish Pub could be amazing, but it doesn't really have ANY craic.  Occasionally live bands, but relegated out onto the patio, with no acoustic dampening at all, even good bands can sound like a bad punk act in that environment.

Maybe if this whole location was transported to a more happening spot (Like downtown San Diego, or Hollywood), and they had a small carpeted stage inside, with real Irish bands that have fiddles and such, this place would begin to be cool.  Until that time, though, if you are a worker bee looking for a spot near by to escape to for Guinness, this place isn't that bad.

Green all over! Yes! I had such an awesome time at Casey's this past St. Patrick's day. Regardless of race, everyone here was in the St. Patty's Day spirit. Well, everyone except for some of the staff (which is why I'm taking off a star). Granted, they were probably there at the top of the morning serving fervent celebrators BUT geez, it's an Irish bar on St. Patty's, ppl WANT to drink dammit...and they as bartenders at an Irish bar SHOULD know this! I heard so many complaints about the bartenders not only being slow, but also a-hole like. Then they ran out of imported beer and only had domestic. A few of my friends left when this happened. Others celebrated with MGD, Budlight and other bottled beer/mixed drinks while dancing to what seemed like the BEST music ever. Don't ask me, it's all a blur to me.

But I do remember the tasty fish and chips that I ordered when I was sober and hungry (meaning at the beginning of the night). Next time I promise to try the famous Irish Banger/Sausage!

I happened upon this place on a Wednesday, which is Trivia Night.  I heart Trivia Nights.  The Trivia Night also takes place during Happy Hour, another thing I heart.  Feeling brave, I decided to get an Irish Car Bomb with a friend.  It was one of their happy hour specials, so I felt the need to do one.  I was feeling good, until I woke up the next day... Trivia Night is good times.  I'm certainly not the best at knowing trivial things, but I did have fun.

Anyway, the only thing I really have to complain about is the lack of A/C.  When it's butt-hot and humid, it's something I really look for in a place that serves hot food.

Casey's is a big part of why I miss LA.  For the last 4 years I've been frequenting this pub in the fall to watch all USC away games, and it's been a blast.  You can't beat the atmosphere or the decor, and if you have the great fortune of meeting the owner, Mike, he's a wonderful guy.

This place has turned into a lunchtime maven for all the downtown LA business types, and the food is good, but faaaaaaaar overpriced.  Where you get the bang for your buck is coming to this place as a bar with some friends - or even alone, talking to the locals.  It's a friendly environ with cool bartenders and a strong Irish vibe.  No better place to spend St. Patty's day outside of Dublin itself.

I went here with my dad (downtown LA business type) as a kid (meaning: mid-80's) for lunch during the occassional trips downtown.  the food was good and that includes the fried pickles everyone talks about.  glad to see it's still around and even thriving in a sense.  I can't believe
