14 reviews for Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli
The short of it: I love this place! Great food, beautiful setting, great service, good value.
The long of it: Located in the upcountry little town of Makawao, the drive there and the setting of the restaraunt is beautiful and charming, and potentially very romantic, if you've got love on your mind (like i did!) The restaurant has a long bar, a large dining area in the rear with awesome lighting (I'm really into good lighting) as well as a lit garden behind glass along the whole back wall which is beautiful at night time. Yes the restaraunt has a "discoteque" or a large dance floor and live music some nights (not the night I was there). It's aesthetically gorgeous in there, and that is matched by the friendly, attentive, knowledgeable service, and the food; which is mouthwateringly good.
We had procscuitto wrapped asparagus, mixed seafood and veg fritti, and the fillet mignon, with chocolate cake for dessert. Everything absolutely melted in our mouths. Perfection. I was so inspired that I even spontaneously proposed to my girlfriend! She accepted!
So anyway, based on that one night, I think this may be the most perfect restaraunt ever. I will definitely be going back, so I will update this review if my experience changes. Prices seemed good value for what you were getting.
Only eat here if your idea of "great Italian" is something you'd find at the food court of your local mall.
The staff is nice and do their best, but the food and drink quality really make their jobs harder.
Hm. How to "review" my adolescence, aka "home"??
I'll keep it useful: for those of you who were not reared in the kitchens of this restaurant...
Food is delicious and high quality and great care is taken to make your belly happily full, to delight your taste-buds, and to mollify your mind (if the Maui sun, the tradewinds, or the sand somehow failed to loosen you up, come here for a drink or two, then dance dance dance).
Most of all, it is the beating heart (with lots of salty drama) of a community, and you will feel lively warmth emanating from the people here as much as from the wood-burning pizza oven. (in my opinion the pizza is worth the trip; even if that trip involves airport security).
Buon apetito!
First, the ambiance is so beautiful there are windows in the back with a view of a bamboo forest. Second, the service is pretty good ,but sometimes the wait for your food is too long. But the wait is TOTALLY WORTH IT! The food is probably the best Italian food you'll find on Maui! Everyone says their pizza is great (it is but I prefer Flatbread)but their pasta totally ROCKS! Try the Spaghetti Carbonara and you'll be in heaven!
probably the only really "nice" place to eat in makawao. despite eating here often, i can't really remember any particular dishes, but I don't remember ever being disappointed by anything, either. I guess I should pay closer attention next time.
this is also the only source of nightlife at all in upcountry maui. thursday nights = ladies night, with all the cheesy dance music you can handle.
Overpriced Italian in quiet Kihei. Smallish and homey considering some of the high prices and poor service.
Dishes are tasty but not spectacular.
One of possibly two Italian restaurants on the island from what I remember.
Loved the low-key ambiance for breakfast.
Coffee: excellent
Eggs, bacon and toast: pretty decent
Good place to be alone with a good book, preferably a Murakami's book.
Great place.
Life without Casanova will be really not so exiting.A place that lends itself for a romantic dinner for two or a large "tavolata" with 10 of the best friends. I find it easy to order an elegant dinner with a great bottle of Barolo,or other times settle for a fine pizza an a glass of Chianti.
It is also such fun to have late dinners and join in for the music/dance.
I really do not know of any other place that offers such a diversified experience.
From great food to great people.
Good for local and visitors alike.
Casanova is for me a weekly must.
The deli is a nice stop for a snack on the way back from Haleakala. After a long day of hiking down and up the crater, the italian meatball sandwich tasted damn good. Lots of different sandwiches, pizza, cannelloni, baked goods, and more are offerred. Wish I could have come back and tried some other stuff, but Makawao is off the beaten the track for travelers staying on the other side of the island. Nevertheless, a vibrant upcountry town definitely worth checking out.
i was not really impressed.
went for lunch on a random rainy day on maui.
drove in from the kailua area just to get off of the farm.
the selection wasn't huge and nothing seemed to be made to order.
i got one of the entrees (not a huge selection of hot foods) and it was just heated up in the microwave.
the food was just decent. but edible and satiated my incredible hunger.
i found it a bit pricey but i'm still used to mainland prices.
i hear it's the place to party at night though.
Loved the food and drinks! Have been here several times while visiting family in Maui. The bread stick are very good! As well as the calamari and ravioli! Love the atmosphere and the staff is always friendly. They have signed photos of celebrities who visited in the center of the dinning area, including the Beatles. Great overall pick for Italian anywhere!
There aren't too many restaurants in Makawao, and there's not much Italian food on the entire island. This place is okay but nothing spectacular. The food isn't bad, the prices are reasonable. They have a short wine list with selective sample of price points and Italian wines.
If you want to have fun, eat really well and not spend a fortune go to Casanova. I've been going for 20 years and have never been dissapointed. I like to get a group of friends together and have a noisy feast but I've had some super romantic dinners, too.
One of the great reason to live in Upcountry Maui. From morning thru lunch and then dinner and dancing....oh gosh it would be soo boring wothout Casanova! Great food, reasonable prices, faboulous people watching, fun to go and spend time even when you are not hungry. I love the pizzas and the fish preparations.
Worth the drive from anywhere in Maui. A must when Upcountry. Ciao!
