5 reviews for Casa Romana
Casa Romana is.... an experience.
That's the only way to describe it. It's not just a table, some walls and a waiter, but total immersion.
First let's get one thing out of the way. The Food is pretty damn good overall. Very rich food, and a lot of it. But that's not what this restaurant is about.
It's the experience.
The Enthusiasm(!): Wait staff is very friendly, very eager to help. But then... the Band! They take this to another level. If you have ever seen Marty & Elayne at the Dresden in LA, this is like their Romanian cousins from back East. Very eager to get you involved. They are a truly wonderful older couple, singing cover songs with cheer and love in their hearts.
The Decor(!): I never thought a restaurant could possibly contain MORE sources of lighting in one room than they have here, and still be low lit and all romantical like. Let's see... club spotlights, check, fake fireplace, check, Christmas lights, check, illuminated fish tank, check, hanging lanterns, table lights, wall candles, illuminated plants, DISCO BALL *gasp*... check!
And we haven't even started talking about the animal heads.
Some nights if you go early this place will be much more low-key than it is on a Friday or Saturday after 8, but regardless, come prepared for some kitschy entertainment. I mean that in the best way possible. It's all about expectations.
They know how to stuff some mushrooms at CASA ROMANA!
Picture it. New York. 2008.
:) I found this place on whim--I was walking by (hungry like always) and thought 'ooo Romanian--that could be interesting.' Then I peer in the window and what do I see none other than my favorite football team--FC BARCELONA playing on a flat screen. The rest is history. Oh what a night! Football was competing with an old lady doing karaoke (performing with the band) for my attention)...it was such an odd atmosphere. I've gotta visit Romania!
Tis another reason why I love my city. And I loved loved loved the bartender, the stuffed mushrooms, the white tablecloth spread out for me at the bar and my cranberry juice. Now couple all that with football (soccer) whoo! Reality--way stranger than fiction.
This was the first restaurant my family and I went to when I moved to New York. I had the chicken cordon bleu, and it was great...much different from other chicken cordon bleu's i've had in the past.
be prepared to be entertained(?) by the multicultural music....going from hungarian to romanian to italian to german, etc. it's sort of humorous at first, but it gave me a headache after a while.
I just got back from one of the best times I've had in any restaurant anywhere in the world. Casa Romana is an experience for all the senses. The atmosphere is like no place on earth. As we celebrated my friend Andy's 50th birthday, we were treated to the sounds of eastern Europe. Not one but 4 singers, each better than the other serenaded us with great music, that didn't stop. The band was fantastic playing an array of music that covered several countries on the continent. Even the magic act, although a bit out of place, was not too bad. Now, the belly dancers were another matter. The two woman entertained the crowded restaurant for almost an hour. Enticing the men and dancing on the tables, they performed to the patrons delight. And the food, I had heard was not so great was rather tasty and much better than Sammy's in NYC. Three cheers for the solor bartender, knew how to make great drinks. They were not watered-down as I've found is often the case in some restaurants. Would I return for another party? Or just for a latenight supper????? In a nanosecond! Everyone needs to have a meal at Casa Romana once in their life. THANK YOU CASA ROMANA FOR A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!"
The most fun I've ever had in a New York restaurant was here. I promise. Saturdays has a great line up of both folk music (gypsy-sort with violin and guitar, not boring at all!!), a magician, a belly dancer, a pop singer. There's a stage where people of all ages dance. The waiters don't speak English, but the crowd is very friendly. They welcomed us to join in in some chora-type dancing and it was great. I participated in a couple of tricks of the magician and my friends laughed their hearts out. I came here with both friends in their 20s and took my parents-in-law for their anniversary. All had a very good time. Fittingly, when the parents-in-law were here, the singers sang a lot of Elvis Presley ballads, which they loved. The food is ok, but no raves here, while the fun factor is definitely a ten. Call for reservations and to make sure they've got the entertainment on.
