The famous "cup flipper" of yore is long gone-  but there is still good reason to stop in at Casa de Fruta!

Casa de Fruta has all your dried fruit needs!  Eat too much while visiting family out of town?  Set yourself right with some dehydrated apricots and cherries for the rest of your journey.  (Just make sure you time those bathroom breaks well).

Car-cramped kids or adults? Let them stroll the fresh produce aisle and stretch their legs before returning to the imprisonment of the auto.

They have pretty good ice cream, ice cold drinks and healthy foods rendered unhealthy by being dipped in chocolate!

This place is just a really fun place to stop when you're driving on the 152. There are tons of different "casas" but Fruta is the best. Their selection of fruit varies throughout the year - a good sign for a fruit market. I just bought some local honeycomb and nuts, but one time they even had some muscat grapes here!! I've never seen them here since that one legendary time in 2001, but BRING THEM BACK!!!

The fruit and nuts aren't always the cheapest, but they're good (I spent $50 here the last time I came).

    They sell hybrid peaches here!

Fresh produce and a convenient location as you stay on the 152 to or from Gilroy. The place is fun with affordable fruits, preserves, and postcards. Just one of those places you have to visit if you make rare trips by it.

On another note, the annual Renaissance Pleasure Fair in Norcal is around here!

Little drops of heavenly goodness, deceptively packaged in unassuming yumminess.

I've loved Casa de Fruta chocolate covered fruits for 16 years.  That's 16 years of awesomeness!!!  Every person I've had try these treats have become fans!

    CLIENT & EMPLOYEE GIFTS:
I finally remembered this year that their gift tins would make fabulous holiday client gifts, so, to gain the support of my colleagues, I ordered a tin from their website to have everyone sample, and it was a HIT!  We received the wrong tin, but it still contained two of the fruits I had wanted, so we kept it.  I called Casa de Fruta and let them know the error, and they refunded the difference of the tin immediately, including sending us another shipment of double dipped macadamia nuts that I had originally wanted included in the first order!  Hooray!

We moved forward with ordering gift tins and bulk chocolate covered fruit and nuts.  We received a call from Casa de Fruta, because they wanted to make sure that we had indeed ordered bulk items that are not individually packaged.  Great customer service!  The order was easy to make online and the shipment came quickly.  I was originally worried that we might be accidentally shorted with the bulk items, but everything was absolutely perfect!

    SMALLER ORDERS:
A week or two later, I paid a visit to their Hollister location and picked up some goodies for myself!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries - OMG so gooood!
Chocolate Covered Blueberries - Seriously so yummy!
Double Dipped Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts - My favorite!!!

If Casa de Fruta is not in driving distance for you, don't worry!  Online ordering is available and easy!

I am not exaggerating, we had such great feedback from our clients and employees.  Try them once, and you'll become an instant addict!

I go here every two or three with my old college friends to grab fruits and pistachios. (YUM! YUM!) ((By the way, pistachio ice cream is the best!! Just wanted to say that.)) It's our little tradition to stop here on our way to Cupertino and grab fresh nectarines, hot sauce, pistachios, dried mangos, and other goodness.

    YES.

They are expensive but to me it is worth every penny because they are shared with my buddies.

Casa de Fruta is a historic establishment, dating back to 1908. They have a family tradition of honest business practices and customer loyalty. The strive for product quality and have been delivering it for over one hundred years. Visit them at their location in Hollister for fun, history and great dried fruit and nuts.

This review is for the dried fruit only, and I buy it online through their website.

Forget those shriveled little cranberries and rubbery apricots you get at the grocery stores! The dried fruit from Casa de Fruta is so moist and succulent, you can use it in harvest salads (it's Thanksgiving morning and I'm using some in a salad I'm making).  It won't be baked into buckshot, either, in Christmas cookies and breads. ;-)  Yes, it's a little more expensive, but totally worth it.

    Such a tourist trap.

The vibe is adorable. Haystacks, pumpkins, carousel, and old school fruit stand charm. That is pretty much where it ends.

Although I would love to just stop by here and roam around because the charm of it all is too cute to ignore, the prices and quality are sub par. I could not believe how expensive fruit was, especially considering that the surrounding area has about a hundred small fruit stands that offer great quality for a fraction of the cost. The fruit wasn't even that great to be honest, it certainly did not taste like "$2.50 an orange" fruit. The nuts and other knick-knacks were in the same boat. $19.99/lb for fudge and random nuts? I don't think so. I ended up buying some anyway just to see if it was worth it and it wasn't- the fruit and nuts we got at this stand off the 85 were much better.

The diner and bakery were the same, typical diner food and regular baked goods you'd find in most donut shops.

If you're driving along I recommend just checking the place out but thats about it.

Like I said in an earlier review of the restaurant, I really liked this place. The shop is absolutely no different.

I ended up buying some chocolate blackberries, which I also ended up not liking and some handmade fruit rolls, which I ended up loving and wanting to go back for.

Service was quick for a tourist spot, and the mining for gold fountain was a cute touch. The only thing missing were Casa de Fruita lapel pins. We really wanted a pin. But their options ran mostly to fridge magnets, lighters and pens.

I'd stop by again. It's a refreshing reprieve from the road. And one with snacks!

I am defiantly a fan of Casa De Fruta something for everyone in my family! Wine tasting, train rides and carousal for my son, wasn't bad in price $4 and one adult included in the price!! :)

I love the fruit stand and the little park that they have on the side. They had Peacocks roaming around and it was pretty neat to watch them.

It's nice to have a rest stop that doesn't involve fast food or cheesy gift shop, I usually stop by here a lot when I go on long trips and we pass by.

Taking a break from a red-eye drive as the sun began to light on the rolling Window XP wallpaper hills, we stopped by this place that I'd always wanted to visit (being a fan of Tom's Farms in the I.E.).

Depending on your level of love for family-friendly settings with fruit stands and kiddie rides,  Casa de Fruta could be considered either really nifty or really cheezy.

Fruit's a bit pricier than one would normally pay. Candy, nuts, dried fruit, and just about everything else too.

In short, it's a good place to stretch during a long car ride, but nothing to wet one's pants in anticipation of visiting.

Anyone who's driven from the Central Valley to the coast & vice versa knows what dull & tiresome trek it can be.  It can, most times, be pleasant distraction to pull over, stretch the legs, and maybe grab a snack. Casa de Fruta is conveniently available for this.  It offers shade & easy hiway entry/exit, both of which are lacking at the nearby San Luis Reservoir.

As others have said, this place is primarily an over-priced tourist trap. If you're truly in the mood for fresh fruits, or an actual sitdown meal, you're better off pushing on a little farther to Hollister (west) or Los Banos (east) unless you just simply, absolutely can't wait.  But if you're simply looking to stretch your legs, give the pets/kids a potty break, grab a water/soda, and peruse the shops to see some of the interesting tidbits, it's a nice place to do so.

If you are traveling from southern to northern Cali, or vice versa, Case de Fruta is a great place for a pit stop. Warning, tourist trap. You will more than likely find me here.

I like Casa De Fruta because of the clean restrooms, good food and snacks, samples, fruit, dried fruit, a place to stretch, candy and even a little wine tasting. Make sure to let the kids ride the train and the carousal to keep them happy.

If you are traveling through route 152, passing Gilroy, make sure to stop by Casa de Fruta for a real treat. Make sure to also stop at Casa de Gas, Casa de Wine, Casa de Hotel, Casa de RV, Casa de Sweets, etc. I think I got them all.

Casa de Fruta is good for 3 things and 3 things only:

    1. Taking a break from driving the 5 hr Bay Area - Los Angeles route.
    2. Taking a piss.
    3. Enjoying as many "not allowed" samples as you want without ever getting caught because quite frankly, no one cares.

All of the dried fruits, chocolates, and nuts are ridiculously overpriced. There are some things that I've never seen anywhere else, like dried pomegranate seeds, but everything else can be found at your local supermarket or farmer's market. This is why samples are so convenient. You can try all you want, but with no commitment to buying.

Other than that, there's not much else to see here. Most of the area is great if you have kids (such as Casa de Choo Choo or Casa de Zoo), but if you're just driving down, don't spend too much time here.

"Casa de Fruta". No one really knows the true meaning of the word. Scholars say the translation was lost hundreds of years ago, but they speculate that it means, "a whale's vagina".

    No? That isn't right.

What this place is is SO MAGICAL! It's an oasis in a sea of fields and garlic (Gilroy is near Hollister). This place has everything you want and everything you didn't know you needed. If you are indecisive, this place will be a nightmare with the huge amount of choices available to you. However, if you love options, you've just struck sweet sweet gold.

    EVERYTHING: 5 stars

This whole place is pretty much an open air flea market, just organized into different sections. You got the Casa de Fruta, which is the fruits and produces stand. It's filled with fresh, dried, and cured goods and sweets. You can find peaches, almonds, okra, watermelon, anything! It's all good.

Then you got the Casa de Sweets, with all the sweets you'd ever want. You can get Jordan Almonds to yogurt covered blueberries. Large cinnamon rolls and salt water taffy. A rural candy shop in the middle of nowhere.

Afterwards, you can drop your kids off at the Casa de Choo Choo and Casa de Carousel so they can ride the train around the lush natural environment that surrounds this extravagant place.

While the kids are busy, you can go to the Casa de Wine and get your drink on. They have a great selection of wine that are local and delicious. I love drinking the blackberry wine and often buy two or three bottles before I leave. It is so magical! Also, you can get free samplings of wine before you purchase. So definitely get your fix.

Finally, the Casa de Restaurant. This place was a God send when driving hundreds of thousands of miles from So Cal to Nor Cal. I was so famished, I could have eaten anything. But I didn't eat just anything. I ate something absolutely surprising and delightful. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich and it was incredible. The meat was moist, supple, and flavorful. The BBQ sauce they used was absolutely perfect for the sandwich and the bread was fantastic! It was airy & flavorful, almost like treating my mouth to a fluffy pillow of savory love. I've been here twice and ordered this masterpiece on both occasions with no regret. The sides are not really worth noting (the coleslaw was whatever), but that sandwich? Amazing!

    CONCLUSION:

Most sailors see lighthouses as their guiding light, an answer to their weary travels. Casa de Fruta is similar, except with lots of nuts. This place is a haven for any traveler driving north up the innards of Californian highway. The rich throwback to farmer's markets and the awesome foods of the past are all here. They welcome you like a warm lover welcomes a lonely mate in cold nights. So make sure you get some loving!

I love this place, and have since I was a kid. I have both wonderful and terrifying memories of stopping here on the long drive from the Bay Area to the Central Valley, a trip I've made probably hundreds of times!

Many, many years ago, they used to have buffalo, and I remember my dad picking me up and holding me right up close to them, and me screaming for him to get me away from them. To this day I still don't really like buffalo.

Casa de Fruta has changed through the years (the buffalo are gone now, sort of like on the Great Plains) but the fruit stand, candy store, restaurant, train and lake are still there. They have a huge parking lot, clean restrooms, and a grassy lawn area for stretching your legs and letting your pup take a potty break.

The winery has to be my favorite part, though. We stopped there again this weekend. They have complimentary tasting, and some decent wines. Not a huge selection, nothing super high end, but still good. The people who work there are very nice, and there's always a two for one sale (on selected bottles only). I really like their sauvignon blanc, and might pick up a couple bottles the next time I'm there.

Also, I got carded at the wine counter, which earns them an extra star!

Touristy stop along the 152.  Lots of parking and bathrooms.

Beware, prices are a bit high and the produce is not necessarily seasonal or from the immediate area (I found a bag of Christopher Ranch Organic garlic from Mexico).   Further back are bins full of candy, dried fruit, and nuts (I'd stay away from anything unwrapped since I saw a few people stick their grubby hands into bins for a "snack").

They do carry Pepper Plant salsa (bonus since I couldn't find it anywhere else).

Awwww, Casa de Fruta. Literally the House of Fruit. This ultimate rest stop off the 152 is not only the best place to gear up for our trips to LA but is also home to many other things I happen to love:

~ A swing set. No, I don't have kids I just happen to LOVE to swing as an adult. You should try it. It instantly makes you feel like a kid again.
~ Clean restrooms. Who doesn't love those?
~ A HUGE facility stocked with every kind of fruit and/or nut snack your little heart desires. I love the chili lime pistachios.
~ A nice grassy area surrounding a pond where you can let your 4-legged or 2-legged kids run around.
    ~ Lots of parking.

Unfortunately, the sit down restaurant is the equivalent of a Denny's but the deli is the far better food option. We don't really stop at Casa de Fruta to eat a full meal, we stop because it is the coolest rest stop I can ever remember resting at.

Great stop with a toddler.  It's got the train, the carousel, a small playground (outdated), a pond, train-remnants where children can climb and ring a bell.
Having a place for a little one to run around while you eat and nosh on sandwiches or peanut brittle...is very helpful when you're traveling via Pacheco Pass to the I-5.  There are plenty of tables to sit and keep an eye on our son.
This is a good stop. It's clean, safe for kids to run around (no traffic) and is fun to look around.  While you're at it, you can pick up some snack items (dried fruit - fresh fruit - drinks -nuts, candy, etc).

I'm not Sure if it's a Rolls Royce of Fruit and Produce Stands but it's Definitely a Cadllac CTS-V.  Home of Tyrannosaurus zangerensis and well worth a trip down Casa de Fruta Parkway.

I nearly got my ticket punched on Pacheco Pass in the days of two lanes and V8 engines.  It's great to be here alive, still visiting Casa de Fruta.  When our leaders speak of hard work and enterprise, I'm sure they'd say Casa de Fruta is the model for all of us to follow.  If we have brains, brawn, rich land, location at critical cross highways plus a gushing spring and artesian well.

There are several smaller stands to the west, but this is the last one you'll find for many miles to the east.  Last gas, diesel, food, wine, fruits and vegetables, delightful shade, great little kiddie train and phenomenal, unrestored collection of aged farm, ranch and industrial machinery.

    Must Get:
-giant corn nuts that come in 4-5 different flavors (these corn nuts are on steroids and are about 3 times bigger than the regular ones)
    -dried sweet corn

But, besides that, everything else can probably be avoided.  They are pretty expensive when you compare them to places like Whole Foods and, Whole Foods is pretty expensive to begin with.  The dried strawberries that they carry are $19.99 a pound, and you can get them at Whole Foods for like $9.99.  A pretty huge price difference, but given the location, I suppose its a tourist trap out in the middle of nowhere.

THREE-FOOT LONG JERKY STICKS!!! Yee-haw! Nice and peppery, meaty with no visible solid chunks of fat... a $5 gift that keeps my carnivorous bf grinning ear to ear. :]

And to keep the world in perfect balance, I have no choice (absolutely none!) but to pick up a few bottles of delicious (and local!) wine for myself. They usually have an awesome 2 for 1 sale on certain varietals, the gewurztraminer being my favorite! Pop into Casa de Wine for a free tasting, though they always seem to be closed by the time I make my way over there after work. Don't fret, the main store also has a tasting bar for late-comers!

The bulk dried fruit and nut selection is a dream come true, with every possible option available. The dried fruit is left out to the open air and may seem a bit sketchy, but I honestly have not had any problem with the taste/quality OR my bowels after the fact (NOTE: sampling too many prunes may result in loose stools which are unlikely attributable to flies and other bugs).

The nuts may seem a bit pricey, but they're always fresh and perfectly roasted, and the jalapeno pistachios and garlic rosemary cashews are so dang addictive! They make great holiday gifts, too (see photo for what I crafted as a present for the in-laws one year)!

Finally, for all you city people so spoiled with bright lights at night, drive a few hundred yards down the road from CdF and you'll be rewarded with one of the clearest views of our star-studded sky, under which would be a very appropriate time to happily gnaw away at your beef jerky stick with your beau, a la the spaghetti scene in Lady and the Tramp.

I've been driving up and down California for several years and this is one of the stops when we need to use the bathroom or fill up gas.   But as always each stops tempts you to get in the nuts and fruits section to make some expensive purchase.  Even though we know we can get the same things much cheaper elsewhere, it still feels like a treat to get something for the long road ahead.

Even if you don't make any purchase here, just walking on the grounds is a nice experience.  The pond has ducks and the peacocks make an appearance certain times of the day (not there all the time).  Nice place to bring the kids for the train and old fashioned carnival rides.

Aside from the Fruits section in the front, there is also a wine shop in the back and couple of restaurants.

Although it is expensive, once in a while you find items that you can't buy anywhere else.  My personal favorites are the yogurt almonds.  Can't get enough of that stuff.

The Casa De Fruta has been a family traditional roadside stop for me since I was knee-high to a grasshopper back  the early 1970's.  This is a great place to get out of the car grab some fruit and nuts then keep on truckin'

Whenever I come here I feel like I'm at home.  Viva Casa De Fruta!

I stop by here occasionally on my way to Merced from the Bay Area (it's at my approximate halfway point), and it's definitely a tourist trap, but they make a pretty nice one. It's a good place to rest, use the restroom, and browse a little. The market has a variety of fresh fruit, dried fruit, all kinds of nuts and candied nuts, and more candies and chocolates than I could imagine. The prices are crazy expensive too. I really wanted some butter toffee pecans, and it was $17.99/lb! I ended up only getting less than a handful for $2 and ate it all within 10 minutes of getting back on the road again. -__-

There's plenty of other fruit stands along the 152 (closer to Gilroy), but they're much smaller and don't offer as much variety. However, they're also much cheaper.

In general, this is a good place to rest, pee, and grab a quick [expensive] snack, and it's much safer getting back onto the highway thanks to the ramp where you can build up your speed for the merge. I should also note that the Chevron here has a super clean and large bathroom, which is actually nicer than Casa de Fruta's, in my opinion.

Planning a drive to the Bay Area?  Would you like a bathroom break that doesn't involve fly strips (seriously. no joke), fast food, or gas stations?  Or perhaps you just want some fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, meaty beef jerky,  or candies?

Casa de Fruta is a refreshing pit stop.  It has several themed buildings, inc Casa de Fruit Stand, Casa de Sweets & Coffee, Casa de Wine & Deli, and even a Casa de Choo-Choo and Casa de Carousel for the kiddies.  My friend and I walked around and checked out the different areas, then stopped by the Casa de Restaurant & Bakery for some pie.  We ordered slices of the Olallieberry pie and Apple pie.  I was disappointed in the Olallieberry.  It was decent, but I definitely prefer the Razzleberry pie from Marie Callendar's.  The apple was okay too, but not above average.  If you want to stop by the restaurant/bakery for a bite, then it's a good option.  However, it's not worth going out of your way for.

Also, while it's nice to look at all the fresh fruits and veggies, the prices are very expensive.  The farm stands near Gilroy are much cheaper.  Nonetheless, Casa de Fruta is a good opportunity to stretch your legs and take a little break.

Cool place to stop by to break up a long road trip.

    Stalk some peacocks...FREE!
Take cool pictures of the haunted tunnel (not haunted).. FREE!
Take your little ones for a ride on the choo choo train
Buy dried fruits, candies ( a ridiculous amount to choose from), veggies and meats
Sit down for some delis or baked goods (baked goods looked not too fresh though)
    Ride the merry go round
    Stare at the lake.. FREE!
    Pan for rocks..FREE!

or play around at the park (my friend and hubby tried to swing upside down on the hand rings...)!!

or... if you need a clean bathroom.. this place has it. ;)

I think this place is a tad pricier than other "fruit stands" but.. this place has become a small shopping center in its own right, so I can see why they charge more...

Nice place to stop for a restroom break and snacks. Price is a bit expensive for fresh & dried fruits, sauces, knick knacks, wine, nuts and chocolate but hey you're in the middle of nowhere. Despite the signs that say "ask for assistance for a sample" I saw people digging in the bins with their fingers - gross. If you want to sneak a sample without asking for a clerk at least be like me, use the scooper to put the nut/fruit/chocolate in your hand and then eat.
