Tommy is a man of few words...but he does what he says he's going to do. I had a rather simple moving job that included moving a very heavy stove over a counter that simply wouldn't clear at the floor level. Tommy came and looked at the situation, said he'd come back with two strong guys two days later. And that is exactly what happened. Within 5 minutes I had the stove in the middle of my kitchen floor. Happiness.

I'm a little disorganized, impulsive, and not always the best of planners.
So, instead of planning and hiring movers way before my moving date, I called around and eventually got ahold of Carty Moving a couple days before I had to move. And by a couple, I'm pretty sure I mean like one (or two). They squeezed managed to squeeze me in, which is very awesome.
Also, like I said, I'm a little disorganized and don't plan very well. So, when the movers got to my house I didn't have a lot packed.
They finished packing all my shit up, hiked the boxes on their backs, and loaded the truck in record time.
They are super fast and very reasonably priced. You can even pay with your credit card (for a small percentage fee), which is very nice if you don't quite have your deposit back from your old place....
They are super nice and even gave me a ride over to my new place.
Also, the mover with the mutton chops (I think his name is Elvis...or Amos) is super sexy and let me sit on his lap on the ride over...

I'm a 25 year SF native and Tommy Carty and Carty Moving's crew has moved my family 3 times in SF ....always on-time, always professional, very attentive and careful with delicate items and charge very reasonably.....these guys are 5-star , no question...

My husband and I used Carty Moving for our recent move and we couldn't have been happier. They were very polite and professional. It was probably the hottest day of the year and they moved our 4 bedroom house across the city in just a few hours. Not only were they quick and efficient, but they were really careful with our things and were cautious not to scratch the floors, scuff the walls etc.
I have to say we were both very pleasantly surprised and will absolutely use them for future moves and happily recommend them.
I just hired these guys to move a piano for me and they did a great job. They showed up right on time and moved a piano as easily as lifting a feather (well maybe with a little more effort, but man, I was really impressed with how easy they made it look). They were very nice and gracefully handled a special request to treat some newly refinished stairs with extra care. Plus, their price was reasonable. All around A+ service.

I had Tommie move my piano from S.F. to Petaluma recently. I was impressed at the way he took a lot of care with the piano preparing it for transit and unloading it. He had enough people to help him which made me feel more secure about the care of my piano. His staff was friendly and I was pleased- everything went really well, especially because the piano had to come down a flight of stairs. I will recommend him to my friends and family in the city. I was so impressed with his work that I paid him more than he asked- he did not try to overcharge me and I did appreciate that.

Tommy Carty and his crew are amazing. They were professional, fast, courteous, even fun! I found them on Yelp and having read all the amazing reviews, thought "113 people cannot be wrong." Now 114 people cannot be wrong, because I agree: these guys are top-notch. PLEASE call them, don't do it yourself, don't beg your friends... just spend the money and get Tommy's help. No foolin.

We called them a few days before our preferred date of April 28. We should have booked earlier, but they were extremely accommodating. On the morning of the move we decided that we wanted two drop-offs, one to a house in the Mission and one to our storage space on Treat Street. They were on time and were good sports about lugging a china cabinet up three flight of stairs. My partner was impressed with their ability to manage without complaining and I was impressed by their promptness and correct assessment of how long the job would take. It's good to know that there are reliable and good movers you can call at short notice (if you didn't plan as well as you should have). I'd totally use them again.
If it were not for the cuties with Irish accents, a couple of whom worked their booties off, I would have not given Carty Moving ANY stars, but being generous, here you go, a consolation star for actually getting the job done.
I looked on Yelp to find this company and with the decent reviews that I read I figured that it would be a sure bet. I called the company to schedule. I advised them that my new husband and I only had a small one bedroom apartment to move and we were only moving 1/4 of a mile from our old place. The company said that a two man team and half a day would be plenty. When I asked how much they said that it would probably be in the $300-$350 range. No problem. Just 48 hours before the move, a woman from Carty Movers called and said that they would not be able to send a two man team because it would not fit into the schedule for their day; they would be happy to help us move but now we were going to have to pay the hourly for a 3 man team. Being newly married and a full-time student, my hubby and I were on a very strict budget. I asked her how much it would be now (her and I both knowing that it would be virutally impossible to find a new moving company this late in the game). She said with the extra man that it would be about the same since they would be able to complete the work in less time. I agreed and she said to look for them at noon. 12:30p they arrived. I offered them some energy drinks to guzzle down before hand and they politely accepted. After accepting my hospitality, they went to work. Two of the men worked their Irish buns off while one was giving about 50%.
Four hours and eleven minutes later, all of our stuff was FINALLY in the new place. I offered the team some beers and they accepted.
So you are thinking, so far, so good right??
We sat a relaxed for a few and then Tommy, who I suppose is the owner, tabulated my bill. I almost fell off the box I was sitting on!!!

We did not sign up for this! My husband works in the service industry and I did as well all through my undergrad; we understand how to tip generously and return the gratuity karma... we tipped them $100.
After an excess of 300 dollars and being unable to pay the car payment that month because of it, we were just happy to have it finished.
Two days later, I received a call from Tommy. He informed me that he forgot to charge my credit card for the EXTRA 5 or 10% charge that people have to pay for using their credit card. Huh? What?
(Do they actually expect people to regularly kick down that quantity of moolah in cash?!?!? Ridiculous! I think the $600 charge did more than cover the service charge assessed by VISA, I am certain. Greedy.)
He asked me to authorize him to re run my CC for the extra $$$. I was like, um, no. We just gave you $700 for a job that was supposed to cost us $400 MAX! Greedy.
Politely I said no, and I told him that it was unprofessional to call and ask that after we had paid doule what we were quoted and gave a $100 gratuity. In addition, no one ever mentioned this extra fee, and if you were too oblivious to bring it up that day, DO NOT insult your customer by calling them after the fact to demand even MORE money. Greedy.
Ready to hang up and let it go, Tommy said well you are lucky I asked you for permission. I should have just charged you and not bothered to call.
WTF?!?!?!? Again!!!!!
I was appaled, and stated that if he charged me he would be looking at a law suit. He shouted a couple four letter profanities at me to reassert the Carty professionalism once more, and then grumbled, "Good luck finding your next movers...B*%#$!"
Then he hung up.
I know some of you have had positive experiences with these guys, and I thought I was going to be another one, but Tommy proved me wrong.
If you chose to have these guys move you when you have so many other, more professional companies at your disposal, do so at your own risk, and please for the love of God...
1. If you have children, do not let them within ears distance of Tommy, and
2. Check your CC statements after!

I have worked with Carty Moving and Storage for almost three years, and I am always pleased with the high level of professionalism that Tommy and his workmates provide. Just last week I hired Tommy to pick-up over 40 boxes of paper that were sitting in the back of the office for weeks. He came loaded up the truck and took the paper to the recyclers. No complaints, no problems. And that's why I will continue to call Tommy for hauling jobs.

These guys were awesome! They showed up exactly when they said they would and man, they did not fuck around. They were in and out in just under four hours, as they estimated. What's more, they didn't break a single item, not so much as a wine glass. They were fast, friendly, and efficient. If I ever have to move again--God forbid--I would definitely use Tommy and his crew again. Bonus point for the thick Irish accents!

Love these guys. They picked a few items up at my mom's house in Petaluma and brought them back down here and they did it for cheap. Cheaper than any other place I had called. When they forgot some to give me some things that my mom has added to the pick up they came back around 6:30pm to give them to me. Super nice, very efficient. I am never going to use anyone else!!

I just used these guys for my move and was thoroughly impressed. Tommy and Amos showed up right on time with a huge truck and moved all my crap out of one apartment and into another in SF in under 3 hours. Tommy charged me exactly what he had quoted on the phone (no hidden charges for anything), and they were really careful with my stuff. Nothing was damaged or broken and they were really nice on top of that!
I would highly recommend these guys and would definitely use them if I ever have to move again.
Dear Tommy, you moved us across town over a year ago now. You did an awesome job. You asked us to review you on Yelp. We are just doing this now. There is no real reason for this, except for if we weren't lazy, we would have moved our own stuff to begin with. Anyway, there are lots of Irish movers in San Francisco, but you rise to the top. We used these guys in our last move about two years ago and had a great experience with them.
They pulled off an epic move from a difficult apartment to a new flat all the way across town in one day. I don't think we had a single thing broken in the move and they were really careful with the walls.
Would highly recommend these guys if you are looking to move. I've done it plenty of times myself and with a service and I have to say this was probably the most painless move I've had.

Tommy and the boys are amazing. I booked them total last minute for a move from SOMA to the Mission. This was an against all odds move. It was raining like hell. Parking was a total nightmare, didn't have parking permits at either location, and I gave Tommy the wrong address. All issues aside they were extremely fast, strong, careful, considerate, and above all very helpful and empathetic. Tommy even threw down on some taqueria recommendations.
Book them next time you need to move.

Just moved and these guys made it happen. They were extremely professional in setting up, got to our place, parked and ready to go right on time. Thomas and Emmit managed to haul all our 'big ticket' junk within hours...even in the rain. Good stuff for sure...hire them, you'll be happy.

I scheduled an estimate at my home with Carty. Not only did the Carty representatives fail to show up for the estimate, they never called to tell me they weren't coming. After waiting around for an hour, I called them. It took me asking "what happened" two different times on the phone and two times via email to even get an apology. They never explained why they didn't show up. Maybe they are great movers, but I was shocked and disappointed by their failure to arrive for my estimate appointment. Needless to say, I'm using another service.

The HOA of our new condo recommended Carty Moving, and we're very happy with their work. They showed up even before the appointment time and were very polite and professional. They took a longer coffee break than we expected on their way to our new place, but once they got here, they were pretty quick and efficient. We'll definitely use their service again.
Well, having just bought the sofa that won't make it in through the hallway, I spent a while checking through yelp reviews. One mentioned hoisting & sofas - which finally swung it........Many phone calls later, Tommy Carty & co. managed to squeeze this little job into their busy schedule. ....I hadn't actually considered the 'breeze' as a major factor in this part of SF; so had to remain patient, whilst Tommy checked the wind in his hair before giving 'operation sofa' the green light. Saturday arrived, along with the monster truck, and ready-to-go removals team. Before beginning his heady ascent, nearly-nine-foot Humphrey (Artemesia/Church St - 'The Humphrey') was beautifully swaddled in blankets and rope-tied like a Harry Houdini act. Tommy, and the rest of his softly-spoken team then proceeded to hoist good old trouble making Humphrey up to and through the fifth floor kitchen window in Bejing Olympic record time, earning them a massive round of applause from the gathered pedestrians and neighbourhood dog walkers.
Not only did they get the job done problem-free - they charged me less than the original estimate - Which is unheard of where i'm from.
I have the feeling that the people who hoisted the great pyramid stones in Giza had a Carty or two amongst their ranks.

last week i called up carty moving and storage on very short notice and got the warmest response from the owner tommy. He arrived 4hrs later that day with 2 other workers and cleared my apt in record time,tommy has such an charm and sometimes i feel like calling him up now and again just 2hear his voice,hes my little angel and would look good on top of any christmas tree lol
would highly recommend using them for any major moves in future

We had a positive experience with Carty. They were fast, polite, efficient, and very strong. They tried like hell to get our enormous couch through our tiny hallway into the living room. The cost was a bit more than quoted, but the move took longer than either of us had thought. The only negative: I booked the moves on Monday for Saturday of the same week. As of 4:45 on Friday, I still didn't know what time they would be coming the next day. I didn't have to be out of my place at a certain time, but if I had needed to, I would have been pretty panicky at that point. Definitely a good choice for your next move.

Carty moved us last weekend. I have only good things to say about the three lads who moved us. They were very attentive to our requests about what is breakable, etc. The were both quick and thorough. They even helped us pack up without advanced warning. We have unpacked everything in our new location and everything is in perfect order. If/when we end up moving again, I will DEFINITELY tender their services!

Somewhere over the years I accumulated a lot of stuff. I don't know where and I don't know how... but, it happened. The last time I moved myself it was into a fourth floor walk-up in Chinatown. I had the aid of my trusty roommate (at the time) and my ex-boyfriend. After this experiance I vowed to myself and to them that I would never, ever, ever move myself again... that I would hire some professionals to haul my big-azz elliptical trainer up and/or down four flights of stairs.
This past June I decided that I was going to move home to Ohio for three months. It was at this time - with only two weeks to plan - that I contacted Carty Moving and Storage to ask them about a quote. Tommy Carty was very helpful in answering all my questions. He determined the size storage locker I'd need based on my guesstimation of how much furniture I have (enough to fill a studio apartment) and quoted me a very reasonable rate for the moving portion of the task.
On the Thursday before my move I made the foolish error of going to a Yelp Elite event (supposedly to tell everyone goodbye for the summer, what actually happened was that I drank my weight in vodka and stumbled home in the wee-wee hours of the morning with packing still to accomplish.)
Carty Moving (sadly for me) showed up right on schedule at 7am to move my stuff as I was franticly packing the last of my boxes. The three adorable Irish boys (they sent me pretty Irish boys!! Eeep, and there I was looking horridly hungover and quite bedraggled!) didn't even make fun of me as I incoherently muttered at them and threw stuff into boxes while I tried to direct them what to take and what not to take. The three of them worked very hard and wouldn't even stop for a sip of water when I offered it to them. They were quite careful with my belongings and accomplished the task of moving my shiznit into storage in record time.
Today they brought me my stuff out of storage (I'm back beeotches, recognize!) Nothing was damaged or broken. And, Tommy Carty and his co-worker moved it all in, even going as far as to set up my bed for me and help get the whoist thingie-ma-bob on my elliptical unstuck and working properly.
This is the first time I've ever used a moving service; but, should I have the need to move again I will absolutely use Carty Moving and Storage. And, in fact I would go so far as to recommend them strongly to anyone who is in need of moving or storage services.

This is my 2nd time moving with Thomas Carty, and I would still highly recommend them to anyone. His men are strong, careful, efficient and super friendly. I had a big sofa that they had to take down 5 flights of stairs -- it was a tough job but they were very good-natured and professional through it all. Tommy himself moved me the first time, and this time, he sent Richie, Mike & Amos, all great guys. Very happy, thanks!

Carty did my move this last Monday. I had two guys for five hours and their rates were very reasonable. The guys arrived promptly (early) and were straight to business. They flattered my ego straight away by telling me that I was "pretty well packed" already - amazing!
The move went pretty smoothly. We struggled with finding parking - but that was my fault not theirs. Also we got a ticket !@#$$ - again, my fault. The two guys worked hard and kept smiling throughout. They really earn their money.
I would not hesitate in recommending these guys to any other yelpers out there.

I recently had Carty moving help me move and I was overjoyed with the service. They arrived on time with a smile on their faces, the team leader Richard was polite, careful, and very helpful through the day. Although we were not fully ready, the movers helped us finish packing and shared a laugh and a joke along the way. I would highly recommend Carty moving to anyone who needs to move !!!

The boys at Carty Moving just helped me through a move. The did a great job! They were very friendly, professional, and quick. They even took an old couch of mine to the dump after they were all done moving me in. I would definitely use them again!

For the second time Carty Moving & Storage did a great job moving me. On both occasions, Tommy and his crew moved my things in a quick and efficient manner. Despite all the stairs and odd dimensions, they moved everything carefully and with no damage. Additionally, they were courteous throughout the move.
These guys are real pros and it is worth it to hire them for your move. Your back and friends will thank you. I definitely plan to use Carty when I move again.

Tommy and Amos moved a bedroom in the Mission to a three-story walk-up studio in the SOMA in two hours. No extra charges beyond what was quoted on the phone ($200 for two hours plus $50 for driving time).
I called them the day before the move and they were able to be there the next day without any problem.
Highly recommended.
No problems with the move or anything else.
Summary: I gave Carty movers 4 stars on yelp and listed the positives and negatives (see bottom for original review). Then I got called by Carty movers and was essentially harassed for each of the negative things I wrote up.
Harassment:
I was contacted by Carty moving via a yelp message (a user named "tommy"). It was a friendly message - claimed he wanted to know who I was so that they could identify the moving crew and take corrective action. I ignored the message since it was very awkward to be contacted by someone I just yelped. I was sent a similar follow up message after a few days. This time, I responded and identified myself, but I clarified that it was not a complaint, it was just a review.
Then I got the phone call. It was from a person claiming to be the one who messaged me. His tone was confrontational from the outset. He said he didn't deserve the review. I was stunned because I thought it was very inappropriate to be contacted in this way. I reiterated that I was not making a complaint, I was just writing a review. He continued by picking on almost every single one of the negative points I wrote and attacking them, while not allowing me to respond. He seemed convinced that I was being maliciously inaccurate in my review. Some extracts of the conversation as best as I can remember:
- He argued about why I had to write "My previous movers were less expensive". I recall him asking me "So what's wrong with that?" I explained that it was negative because "it's more money".
- I pointed out that he had hundreds of good reviews, and in any case, I did give him 4 stars. He still seemed intent on stamping out my review.
- He ("tommy") was part of the moving crew that day.
- He claimed I made a racial statement. I assure you I had not. Seemed to me like he was just throwing arguments in order to pressure me to remove my review. I now *have* removed the statement that he chose to perceive as racist, just to play it safe.
- He mentioned he had a highly-paid lawyer. He said he would take this issue to yelp.
- He kept attacking the review without letting me speak, I was forced to abruptly end the conversation and hang up.
Though it appeared to me like he was well-practiced at the way he harassed me, the few yelpers I contacted since then claimed they did not have the same experience. So I'm guessing this was a one-off case. If it wasn't, it would mean that the average rating they have on yelp is too high, since all the critical reviewers would've been harassed to retract their reviews.

I moved a 1-br apartment to another location within SF city. Carty movers did a reasonable job but at an expensive rate. In my opinion, there are other movers who would do the same job for cheaper.
Good:
- Squeezed me in even though it was a very busy weekend and everyone else I called said it was impossible.
- Were not more than 30 mins late, acceptable by my standards.
- Did the job, I've moved successfully! woohoo!
- Fairly efficient (I had packed everything in advance)
- One of the guys was friendly.
Not-so-good:
- More expensive than my previous movers.
- Scratches on some of my furniture (my previous movers took better care of my furniture IMHO) [Edit: I'm only 50% sure the scratches were caused by Carty moving]
- Only given the option of 3 movers ($150/hr), not 2 as I had wanted.
- Was stressful not knowing the exact time of arrival, and whether they would turn up at all. [Edit: they *did* try to call me on the day of the move but my phone was apparently unreachable]
- One of the movers was very sloppy. He seemed either tired, lazy, or inebriated.
- The 'travel time' charge was a surprise. (He claimed that he had informed me on the phone, might be true) It's the amount of time they take to travel to your first location, and return from you second location. I have no way to ascertain the amount of time it took and to verify that it did not overlap with the previous customer.
- The guy I spoke to on the phone initially sounded discourteous and abrupt. [Edit: removed sentence that was ridiculously claimed to be racist] Besides, I had no options and he probably knew it.
- I didn't like the fact that he tried to get friendly once he knew I was likely to yelp.

HERE IS WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW:
Tommy Carty and his band of handsome and dapper muscle men make it sort, of, like, sort of nice.....? Imagine a gaggle of handsome dreamboats complete with freakishly charming Irish brogues showing up in your apartment and carting off all your worldly possessions while smiling and winking and telling you in that TDF brogue that you are a 'fantastic lady' and a 'fabulous packer' and all manor of other niceties that make you giggle like a small but happy moron. There were several bonus moments when they went above and beyond; they unscrewed a vanity mirror in my bathroom that I could not do due to the screws being stripped, they dis-assembled my antique bed and then re-assembled it at my new place, and when I realized I had forgotten to buy a plastic bag to transport Dolly Parton (my goldfish). my handsome Irish men punched holes in the cap of a mason jar, emptied the aquarium for me, and Amos Carty held sweet dolly in his lap for the drive to my new digs.
It almost made me enjoy moving.

Carty Moving & Storage is EXCELLENT! They are prompt, professional, and treated my furniture and property with utmost care. Since the end of April I have called up Tom Carty and his team three times to hep move me from a condo to a house and most recently to move items from the house to the garage due to remodeling. Each move has been a effecient, professional, and a delightful. The second move required a crane and the removal of a second story window to get an oversized victorian sofa and huge roll top desk into the flat. The move was a remarkable feat and still the talk of the neighborhood. I am ever thankful and would highly recommend Cary Moving for ANY and ALL moving projects

The not so great:
There was a communication breakdown prior to my move. I heard one thing, they heard something else. My moving window was 1pm - 3pm but the movers showed up at 5:30pm. They did call but due to the time snafu, I thought I might get a little bit of a discount which I did not. This was all sort of a bummer. I thought it was pricey and the guys could have moved a little faster loading but. . .
The good:
Nothing was broken, and they did a freaking amazing job fitting all my stuff in my small storage spaces. That was actually a miracle and I'm convinced not just anyone could have made all my stuff fit. . .let's just say they know how to pile high.
I have to say, the Carty's were all really nice and seem like good people. I learned a lesson that everything should be totally clear up front. No gray area when setting up for moving day. I'd never hired movers prior to this move. If I move again (so help me God) I will probably hire the Carty's again to bump my review up another star.
When calling to confirm move time and date, they might want to put a check for exact destination for safeguard.

These guys are pros. Tommy, the owner, was one of the two men who showed at my door on time, and somehow, without appearing to hurry in the least, made record time spiriting away all my boxes plus some others I had forgotten to mention, without any griping or fussing. And this is all the more impressive that I had only called them with 4 hours advance notice, and they had squeezed my little job in, for a reasonable price. (Still, I'd advise you call them with as much advance notice as you can, with all the good reviews they are consciously earning on Yelp, they may get really booked up!)

I was referred to Carty Moving by another moving company when they were booked. Tommy and his crew took me on late notice and did a fantastic job, in my opinion. I was just in a high-speed race car accident and had two broken ribs so I was pretty useless during the move so they even packed up my things that weren't boxed and were fast, friendly and took very good care of my stuff. They have boxes for hanging clothes which helps tremendously when moving closets. Pretty good price, too. Hopefully I won't be moving again any time soon, but if I do, I'd definitely use them.

These guys are great!! I had never used professional movers before so didn't really know what to expect. I had a really small move--bedroom furniture and a kitchen table and desk. However, I did not want to risk my dad throwing his back out helping me, or to put my friends through the torture of lifting heavy furniture.
Two burly Irishmen came over and took care of it in an hour and a half! And to my surprise, they lifted my huge desk, with ironwork all around it as though it were no heavier than cardboard. The guys were FAST AND EFFICIENT, nothing broke, and they were very nice!!
Tommy, the owner of the company, was great. He took my call when I set up the appointment, and was able to schedule me on a Friday for a Sunday move. Short notice which is not usually appreciated, but he was able to squeeze me in. It is obvious to me that customer satisfaction is a top priority here!
While moving can be a stressful experience, it was nice to know that the actual physical move did not have to be so. All in all, it was a good experience, especially since the guys were so quick and professional. I know I'll be moving again in the future, and will definitely do business with again! Highly recommend!!

I found these guys on Yelp.com and they were professional and friendly. The move weas effortless, I just watched Tommy and 2 young Irish guys work, efficiently and well organized. I will call them again.
