Review from Lenah K.
Bastrop, TX
Usually I think Cartwright's is just okay, but this evening it was better than that.
My husband ordered the brisket and sausage plate with macaroni salad and black-eyed peas (I wanted to try them so I asked him if he'd order those instead of regular beans). Bread and pickles were free with the meal (onions would've been too if he wanted them). He liked the brisket (nice and moist with just the right amount of fat) and macaroni salad, and the peas and sausage were okay, not great (peas bland, sausage bready).
I decided to order the fried catfish plate, which is available M/W/F. I hadn't had it before, but I really wanted catfish today. I chose fried okra and french fries as my sides. The plate also came with hushpuppies. The hushpuppies were my favorite kind ... rod-style rather than ball, and doughy, spicy, and just a bit sweet. The catfish was served in a huge portion, and was quite good. I am extremely picky about catfish ... I always have to scrape off the grey fishfat and sometimes reject it entirely if it tastes too sandy. This catfish was really good, cooked perfectly, and I didn't have to scrape off much grey at all. I enjoyed my sides ... the okra was tasty and non-slimy, and the fries were how I like them -- barely-done and limp (which I realize is not how most people like their fries). I did have to salt everything, but that's no surprise since I'm a salt freak.
Definitely the best meal I've had at Cartwright's, and my husband also enjoyed his old favorites. Next time I'll try the chicken strips or maybe have some chopped beef in one format or another.Listed in: Hungry in Bastrop?, BBQ and Steaks!

I just don't get it. There is an abundance of BBQ joints in Bastrop. Plenty of competition and some really good Q. I was talked in to going to Cartwight's for lunch and what I don't get is why the service is so poor during lunch service. We had an hour for lunch, arrived at 12:15. This is, basically, cafeteria style service. The tables were empty with a dozen or so folks standing in line. Three workers on the steam table. The workers (I sure can't say servers) answered the phone, went into the back of the house a few times, stirred beans, all while the lunch munchers were waiting in line. It was truly amazing to watch.
I had a sausage and brisket (most of it fat), two sides, and a large iced tea, which I had to dispense into a Styrofoam cup. The cost, including tax was over $11.00.
I must be getting old and grumpy, but this place was a joke. And what is up with that scary looking duck looking down at me? -

Had today's lunch special, the brisket plate with 2 sides for $5.99. The brisket was OK. Too much fat, and a bit bland. My sides were green beans and potato salad. The potato salad tasted like HEB's. Yep, that bad. I think the green beans were the best part of the meal, next to the sweet tea.

I ordered takeout....since we were at the Lost Pines and were going to eat in the room. Two years ago, we ate in the restaurant...so I have had some experience at Cartwright's. Okay...it is typical Texas BBQ. Nothing fancy....plates and meat by the pound. I got the turkey, brisket and ribs. The ribs were okay...I've had better. The brisket was very nice and the turkey was good. Sides were pinto beans and macaroni salad and they were serviceable. Hard to mess them up, right?
I guess my problem was I ate at the Salt LIck two days earlier and the ribs I had in Driftwood were the finest I have every eaten. So...anything since then will pale in comparison. My 11 year old son agreed with me wholeheartedly.
The bottom line is that Cartwright's is serviceable BBQ and probably one of the better options in Bastrop. You cannot go wrong eating there...just know that there is better BBQ out there...but you'll have to drive a few miles.
As far as restaurant ambiance...it is cafeteria style with some decor elements. Nothing to write home about...but certainly not antiseptic or boring.
