Me and my honey stayed here over the Labor Day weekend and had a blast. It's definitely one of the nicest places in the area. Top notch service, friendly staff and very romantic.
The placement of this place is perfect. They are really building up Eureka's downtown area so a nice stroll is simple and easy from this place.
Cute room, tea and cookie time, a nice breakfast, wine hour.. this place knows how to spoil you.
AND don't get me started on the Restaurant... it was wonderful. Very fresh high end ingredients and an ever changing menu. The place is quiet and romantic.. the whole place has such charm.
Highly recommended. I have a feeling that because this place can cost you a pretty penny they don't get too many younger folks. One night my honey and I were sitting downstairs next to the fire chatting and he left his sweatshirt down there on the couch..well we went back down there to look for it and they left it on the counter behind the check in area with a note attached saying " this belongs to our youngest couple staying here. " We aren't even that young... but is made us smile and was very sweet.
I'm glad we stayed here. It made the stay very nice.

We had one of the Carter Houses to ourselves one Sunday/Monday in August. A roaring fire made the evening magical, and the breakfast next morning was delicious. Everything was clean, quiet, exceptionally well maintained. There are lots of places to explore - hallways, dining rooms, kitchens, and the like. Evening wine and cheese in the main house was great, and the staff were truly accommodating. If you are in Eureka and can afford it, come here to Carter House. It's worth the effort.
My review is for the hotel attached to the restaurant...on the exterior, it's a beautiful place. The lobby is nice, the restaurant is cute, the rooms are nice...but the actual experience (at least the one we had) was not great. I don't even think my BF at the time would have even called it good.
Our room had a lovely view of the Eureka jail and I have to admit, I've never seen complementary earplugs among the toiletries in the bathroom until I stayed here. We laughed when we saw those since none of the people staying here looked like the partying-rockstar-room-thrashing type. However, around 5:00 the next morning I was awakened to the sound of some guy projectile vomiting (loudly) outside our room...for about 20 minutes. Seriously. It was disgusting.
It turns out my BF was already awake though, from sneezing uncontrollably thanks to the dust-ridden bed we were sleeping on. Which brings me to the next issue: the bed. Seriously one of the worst beds I have ever slept on. It had to have been terribly old and by the time I got up the next morning, I was sneezing as well and both of our backs hurt.
We decided we'd at least head downstairs for the free breakfast which was really not impressive. Granola, sugary pastries and unimpressive eggs with sausages that looked...well...nasty. The juice and coffee were good, though.
I will say that the staff here is very, very accommodating and friendly so if though our experience here wasn't fantastic we were treated nicely.
Overall if they'd replace the beds (literally the mattress/boxspring) and put more effort into breakfast (i.e. more substantial food options) I think it'd be a much better experience.

Romantic accommodations close to downtown Eureka. Seems pretty easy to upgrade since the economy has taken a downturn and it's less crowded. Sort of a bummer since this place is so nice. My room had a whirlpool and a fireplace. The rooms are part of larger victorian houses that have been converted into inns. The kitchen and living room common areas are spacious and provide a great place to curl up with a good book. Everything is clean and well maintained. I would definitely come back if I were up this way again.
A nicely constructed range of luxury hotel rooms up to homes. Detailed European decorating. A bit expensive but it can be a great place for a romantic getaway. The restaurant 301 is very good.
