We have hired Carolyn Wong to make our wedding cake. Our consultation and tasting with her was incredible. We tasted 18 different kinds of cake, which was a serious undertaking, but we got through it somehow! She is a consummate professional and a talented artist and brews a great cup of coffee. And her prices are reasonable!
I am going to have to hire her again in the future because I loved so many of her cake samples and could only choose two...
I am giving her five stars and will update the review after the wedding when I have no doubt I will want to give her six or seven, if only I could.
Everyone at the wedding admitted that this was the best cake they have ever had. The chocolate mocha layer fell second to the passionfruit, but still outranked all other cakes.
Carloyn made an anniversary cake for my parents YEARS ago. The design was stunning as were the handmade flowers. Embarassing to admit?...my mother still keeps them in a little display box next to the sugar in her cupboard! I highly recommend Carolyn. She is professional and extremely talented. Can't find an equal when it comes to taste or quality. Now, go forth and think up a reason to order a cake! It's time for cake somewhere in the world...right?

Carolyn is absolutely wonderful to work with and her cakes are just as delicious as they are beautiful!! We choose 2 flavors for our wedding cake: passionfruit mousse and strawberries & cream and all of our guests commented that it was incredible! And her design of the cake was so beautiful and was even more than we hoped for. Carolyn was wonderful to deal with throughout the planning process, was always very prompt in replying to emails and our 2 tastings with her were soo good! I cannot recommend her highly enough! Plus, her prices are so reasonable - what a bonus!
oh carolyn! if only you actually read your reviews to see how truly wonderful you are. upon meeting her for the cake tasting, i told her that she was loved by yelpers. her response was very humbling and she told me she would rather not read the reviews due to fear of maybe reading a bad review and it would just throw her off. her streak of 5 stars continue with me though. she made the cake for my sister's baby shower (see pictures above) and everyone at the party was blown away. they thought the cake was decorations. the cake was definitely the main attention that day...wait, 2nd main attention..next to my sister of course. the flavors we got were carrot cake and passion fruit. the carrot cake outranked the passion fruit actually, just because everyone agreed that it was not too sweet and they had never tasted carrot cake that was so well balanced. i'm definitely coming back, hopefully for my wedding cake next.
I just worked with Carolyn last weekend, she was great and so was the cake. We had my mom's 60th bday party and needed a cake that reflected who else...my mom. So Carolyn came up with the idea of doing two shoe boxes, with a pair of fondant shoes & tissue paper. See pics above, it was AMAZING! Not only did it look fabulous it tasted like a dream. We went with the chocolate cake & peanut butter filling...it was soooo gooooood. Everyone at the party was raving about the cake, can't wait until next time I can use Carolyn!!

Carolyn is our cake vendor of choice - though our wedding is not until May, 2008, I have every confidence in her to deliver a fabulous looking-and-tasting cake.
The themes that crop up again and again in her reviews:
1) Quick & responsive on email (often I get replies within an hour!)
2) Traffic -- alas, journeying from SF to the East Bay is not always ideal, but she's exceptionally accomodating. On our first scheduled visit we found that it would have been virtually impossible to get to her in any reasonable amount of time (we were stuck for about 20 minutes on the Octavia St. *on-ramp*) and we had to cancel virtually at the very hour of our appointment. Nonetheless, she was very understanding and proactively sent us a message the next day to schedule a follow up appointment.
3) Deliciousness - best of the 3 cake tastings we've had - the marjolaine is heavenly; the passion fruit mousse ethereal. Since my fiance could not attend the rescheduled appointment, she offered a secondary tasting of 4 flavors if we decided to book with her.
4) Artistry - beautiful designs; confidence in her work
5) Price - just right. Certain designs will cost extra, and there is a delivery charge.
We're excited to be working with Carolyn!

Oh, Carolyn Wong... If you had asked for our firstborn child in addition to your fee for the cake, I would not have blinked an eye. My partner in crime would, of course, object - he's just so practical that way, but I would have found a way to accommodate your demands. Anything in order to have your cake at our wedding...
Firstly, you respond so quickly to emails. A lady who bakes and uses a computer... We cannot express enough our love and admiration for your multitude of talents. And your email itself... so thorough and professional. It included your cell phone number, directions to your office, instructions for dialing up, suggested items to bring, and information on how you conduct your tastings... We read and can only imagine how wonderful your cakes must be if you put even a fraction of that time and attention to detail into your baking. We feel immediately that you want us to have a great experience together, and indeed we do. And, of course, your computer skills pale in comparison to what you can do with cake.
The day of, and we're frantic and running late. We call and you remain calm and and accommodating. We arrive, and your office is just that. An office. Clearly, the magic happens elsewhere, and we're intrigued. Do you mean to say you are so good that you don't need to dazzle us with your fancy store front? You have adorable photo albums of your beautiful cakes, but you do not force us to look at them. You instead talk to us like we're people, not bride + groom = paycheck. You use those albums as tools as we talk, to make sure we're all on the same page, but we can't help but look through your albums. You make an amazing variety of cakes. Your versatility is limitless. You show us cakes so beautiful we forget that we've ever seen cakes before.
We have questions, you have answers - and suggestions! We ask for crazy things like a checkerboard cake, and you say no problem. We are suspicious, and ask how more will you charge for that? We get choked up when you say there's no additional charge. We say we want fresh fruit - you say "August wedding? There will be a great selection of fruits!" We say gold accents, you say, sure, but wouldn't red-orange in the style of piping you want just pop so much more? And you were so right. And your piping? We cannot believe it was done by human hands.
We taste your cakes, and your flavors are beyond words. You have put real thought and love into this. These are the flavors that make you happy enough to want to share with the world, and we can taste that in every bite. Oh, Carolyn Wong, this is so much more than we could have imagined for our wedding cake. The idea of getting a cake from anyone but you is devastating.
And your prices? So reasonable, we couldn't believe our luck. We have gone from frantic and stressed in traffic, to blissed out in the capable hands of Carolyn Wong in less than an hour, and we thank you.

Carolyn made our wedding cake about six months ago. She is extremely responsive and a great listener. Our cake was beautiful and tasted great. She only takes a limited number of clients so she can concentrate on your cake. We had the passionfruit mousse cake decorated with fresh fruit and all our guests raved about it! Carolyn even went to Berkeley Bowl to get my specially requested figs. Her prices are very reasonable especially when compared to other comparable bakers.

This review is far overdue since my wedding was a year ago but I had to come back and say that Carolyn was sooooooo wonderful. I wanted mini cakes for our wedding and everyone that I called gave me such attitude (how dare I ask them to make me 100 miniature cakes that they wanted to charge me $20 a piece for!). Carolyn was so incredibly easygoing yet so professional. Every single cake at the tasting was delicious and our wedding cakes turned out amazingly! I felt that her prices were very reasonable as well. I am still trying to come up with a good excuse to use her again...
All the good things said here about Carolyn Wong are true. Well, OK, we didn't actually go with her for the wedding cake, so I cannot comment on the final product. Still, our cake tasting was a great experience. The cake was delicious, especially the marjolaine, the carrot cake, and the cheesecake. Her prices are more than reasonable. Given Carolyn's background in art, I am confident our cake would have been lovely. Plus, Carolyn seems supremely organized.
For me, planning a wedding is a giant optimization problem, where I'm trying to maximize quality while minimizing cost. Carolyn Wong's cake is where my preferred quality and preferred cost curves intersect.
Carolyn Wong created the most amazing cake for my wedding. Her prices were exceptional and the cake was the talk of the wedding. She even matched the blue in my invitation down to the Pantone colors. She was easy to work with and very friendly. We had carrot cake as the filling.

Absolutely fantastic. Her designs are beautiful, but she is also incredibly flexible and has great ideas for working within a budget and helping you come up with an idea for your cake. We had two flavors - a three-tiered square chocolate cake and passion fruit sheet cakes. Her prices were incredibly reasonable and she was very easy to get a hold of via email. Scheduling tastings was never a problem and she coordinated with my caterer and florist to make sure that everything was done on time and coordinated appropriately. I absolutely loved working with Carolyn and cannot recommend her highly enough!
