I'm between two hard-to-find sizes. Couple that with needing undergarments for a special event where the attire required low-back, low front, and nearly seamless, and you can understand how frustrated I was getting.
Enter Carol Doda. While her shop is small, she knows its contents inside and out. I was in & out within 30 minutes, a record time for my difficult to size self! Carol had me try on 5 options and we determined very quickly which one would work best for my situation.
Call first to get an appointment - if you let her know your size and roughly what you need, she'll already have some options in mind when you walk in the door!
When I saw the Carol Doda lingerie sign on the tiny pathway off Union Street I just had to go investigate. The last time Carol Doda came to mind was upon seeing her flashing neon nightclub sign, back in the good old days on Broadway.
And there she was! So even though I didn't need a bra I felt compelled to buy one
1) since I knew I'd find one in my size
2) to say I bought a bra from Carol Doda
3) to support her entrepreneurial effort
And the one she fitted me with was darn sexy.
The store is small, not chic chic, and you'll be personally helped by Carol. How often can you say you bought a bra from a San Francisco icon?
If you're looking for cute sexy lace bras or other lounge wear, or want a good story, go check out her shop!
I'm thrilled to see that the great Carol Doda is still alive and well. One of the smartest and sexiest San Franciscans ever! I can't wait to be a customer. Next trip down there for sure.
The North Beach icon known primarily for her enormous - ahem - assets obviously possesses some entrepreneurial skills as well. Wise enough to know that it's tasteless for ladies of a certain age to bare their - ahem - souls to middle-aged men with lascivious leers, she opened this shop and filled it with merchandise both demure and risque, but none of it tawdry enough to require wrapping in a plain brown bag. Ladies who aspire to treat their gents to a Doda-inspired - ahem - performance will find a lot of silk, satin, and lace, primarily in jet black and fire engine red, plus a variety of massage oils and other - ahem - accoutrements to help the party along. The Pacific Heights matrons are the ones wearing oversized sunglasses and keeping their heads low, hoping no one from the canasta club saw them slither in the door. Not surprisingly, some of the price tags are larger than the skimpy items to which they're attached.
I was having a hard time finding anything after having ordered a bustier/bra thing for my wedding day online (mistake), and the big day was approaching fast, so the shop that i bought my dress from suggested visiting Carol Doda at her shop. Well, i'm glad I did, because, although the place is kind of hard to find and the shop is actually a MESS, Carol really knows what she's doing and was lucky enough to have the perfect undergarment for me on-hand. Also, go there just to meet Carol Doda. She is quite a character. (For those of you who don't know, Carol Doda was a famous stripper in SF during the '60s, and was the first to get her boobs 'enhanced'.)
It doesn't look like she has much inside, but Carol managed to have everything I needed in my size, corset, stockings and all. She was very helpful and friendly, and didn't even try to upsell me--I was debating between two corsets and instead of urging me to buy both, she suggested I just come back again if I regretted leaving the second behind. I'll definitely be back!
Not for those looking for a super-chic atmosphere, or for those shy about getting half naked in front of another woman (though that part is true of most boutique lingerie stores).
Prices are actually good--comparable to other lingerie stores if not better.
Cute, sexy stuff, even in larger sizes. Carol is very nice, even let my way-too-large dog into the store. I found some cute practical stuff. And I didn't get the impression that my you-know-whats were too big, thus I had to wear industrial strength granny bras, like I've felt from Victoria's Secret and other shops.
