Review from Matthew H.
Oxnard, CA
Free entry but donations are welcome
Came here for 2nd Saturday Oxnard artwalk, this is the premier art gallery in Oxnard, it is located in the former Carnegie library which stands out on C Street.
They have 3 levels that you can explore, the basement is where they usually have the new up and comers, and the 2nd floor feels like a loft as you can look down on the main floor.Listed in: 805 Museums/Art Gallery

This place is a treasure!
It has the feel or a high end gallery.
But in a setting of a home. As if someone invited you to their home to see their private collect.
The Art pieces were wonderful and a good break from a day at the beach.
The nay sayers need to realize that this is Oxnard, a tiny farming town southwest of the 101 fwy...really!...of course this is not Pittsburgh or NY or even LA. -

Carnegie Art Museum I must say is an outstanding building in itself, should I say that it is probably the most beautiful building in all of Oxnard? It sure is the only neoclassic building that I've seen in the area, and it just stands out, proudly facing C Street and touching the side of Plaza Park. This museum brings me memories of when I was a child, my family would always drive pass this place, and I always thought it was the white house!! OH ignorance, how i miss it!!!!!
Carnegie was build as a library, back in the early 1900s and turned to an art Museum, it is a small museum but it offers a lot through out the year to keep you coming!
The exhibition that I saw was painting of Landscapes of California, from Northern California to Southern California, gorgeous local art. I believe they have at least two traveling exhibition every year. Last year they had a photography exhibition from a local artist.
Now if you are expecting to be wowed like you would at LACMA or Getty, this is not the place, this museum is more relaxed, small, a good place to go if you are visiting downtown Oxnard. You can probably spend 1 hour here. -

The exhibitions are very good at times. Artsy farts are very anal, if you want the Louvre, go to Paris. If you want to appreciate art, this is a good place. This small town boy doesn't care where I get to see beautiful artwork.

Review from Paul L.
Be forewarned that the art on display here -- not to be confused with the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh -- doesn't really live up to the grand white exterior of this temple of a former library. To be fair, how could it? If any building says 'Hey, I'm an art museum', this is it.
Just don't expect blockbuster shows here. The interior is rather small, so one exhibition at a time is about all that is possible. I've seen some interesting exhibitions here, but a visit can be a hit-or-miss experience to be sure.
Does that mean you should simply drive by? No. Take a chance because you may discover a few pieces by well-known artists -- as I did today --that you would never have seen at the likes of LACMA or The Getty.Listed in: Art Museums Anywhere

Newbury Park, CA
I loved this museum. It is a little challening to find, but worth it. And after you tour the museum, treat yourself to a meal and a movie at the adjacent shopping district. You can make a whole Sunday afternoon of it.
The museum boasts travelling art exhibits, so check with them to see what is playing when you go. They focus on art, photography and decorative arts exhibits.
The building is described as a "rare 1906 Neo-Classical style," and was built originally as a library with Carnegie funds, ergo the name. It is a beautiful old building in its own right. Parking is free and adjacent to the building and a local city park.Listed in: Culture Vultures

$4 suggested donation or $2 for kids, seniors and students. It got me right there - if it's not that great then I don't need to take out a 2nd mortgage to pay my entrance fees.
It was a smaller art gallery, the first floor and a loft, but with no one else there it ,made for a nice visit. Very easy to find location with lots of free parking and things to do right in the general area so I agree with the previous poster to plan for a few hours in the area.
This gallery has traveling exhibits, so probably worth checking out every couple of months to see what new an interesting art they are displaying. It's a not a "stuff" gallery so this would be a good place to bring your kids so they could dip their toes in the art world to see how they like it.
