I LOVE this bookstore. It is what everyone around the country wishes their local bookstore was. It has a great selection, great staff with great knowledge, and isn't overpriced. They really promote local authors and do author visits often.

Also, when I first moved to Louisville I went in to Carmichael's and asked if they knew of any book clubs. The Events guy actually emailed all the book club heads that had registered with their store (a 20% discount to buy one of those book selections if you mention it!) and gave them my info. I'm now in two different clubs! What a great way to meet wonderful people in a new city.

I always stop in when I am in the Ville. Great (small but well chosen) selection of interesting books cards and notebooks.

I'm currently stuck in the land of many chain stores, so whenever I get a chance to visit home, I go to Carmichael's to stock up on books. There's something so wonderfully peaceful about spending time there - especially with your beverage of choice from Heine Brothers in hand.

Louisville, I miss you!

I'm currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I was in Louisville for a wedding in October '06. I stumbled into this delightful independent (Louisville's oldest!) bookstore. The staff was friendly and helpful--I was looking for books written by local authors--and was delighted to discover that some local writers were in the store that evening reading excerpts from their latest published work.

I'm moving to Louisville this year and look forward to visiting this bookstore often. What a treasure!

The counterbalance to all those chains that seem to be swallowing up the world.  There's a great selection of everything here.  You can get it all from the current best seller to obscure local writers.

I just wish it was bigger.

I loved Carmichael's when I lived in Louisville and even more now that I don't. In a land of Borders and B&N, bookstores like this are a dying breed. Louisvillians should appreciate having such a gem.

This is a lovely bookstore.  I love that they never hassle you about coming in with a coffee from the neighboring Heine Brothers, (I'm careful!), and the little nook where the magazines are that you can hole up and read in, and the excellent things they put out on their display tables.  I like the featured items with employee comments, reminds me of my ole bookstore days... Something inevitably jumps off the table and into my arms every time I visit, from McSweeney's book of lists to rockabilly paper dolls.  They have a cute selection of greeting cards and stationery as well.  The staff is friendly and not snotty, and I always seem to get in some interesting discussion about my purchases ("Why yes I am familiar with Jose Saramago's Nobel Prize, funny you should ask") that leaves me walking out the door thinking "Damn!  I love that place!"
