Liz was our server and she was so amazing! The portobello mushroom appetizer was amazing! The steak for two was big for 3. And the lobster mac and cheese - a MUST TRY! Good eats!

I suppose it's ok. I mean, it offers nothing different than any other high end steakhouse. Same steaks, same sides, same desserts. It's menu is stuck in the 90's. It's a nice atmosphere inside; the waitstaff is usually top notch and makes the experience good.
However, to spend that much money these days, I'm looking for something different and edgy (sort of). It's worth it to drive the 30 minutes and head to New Haven, West Hartford or downtown Hartford and spend the same money and have something newER and different. (ie...Feng, Tango, Bespoke)
In summary.....eh, good (though dated) menu and food, nice decor and atmosphere, great waitstaff, lighter wallet when you leave. -

Great steak, reaonably priced. Sunday and Monday wine is half price. Are you kidding me? Bottle of Cakebread Chardonnay for $33? All I can say is I'm in. Had the ribeye. Cooked perfectly. Mac and cheese was delicious. Creamed spinach and sauteed mushrooms. All well executed. Liz service was outstanding. Only thing that kept this review from a 5 star was the lack of a bone-in ribeye.

To get a fantastic steak and salad on Chase Ave... everyone who lives nearby and doesn't have to drive 30 miles or more for such a stellar meal should be grateful. I haven't lived in CT for a few years now, and I have to drive a bit to get the quality of food served by Mr Vacalebre. My favorite is the filet with the bordelaise sauce, it's on top of a bed of delicious carmelised onions, and steamed broccoli on the side. Start with either the wedge or the caesar salad, both are always fresh and tasty.

I visited Carmen's with a group of colleagues for a "meeting". We just ate, drank, laughed and talked about business for 5 minutes or so. I got there early so I had an appletini...it was pretty good but not the best I've had. I started off with the bleu cheese wedge, and let me tell you, that was the best piece of iceberg lettuce I've ever had up to now. The bleu cheese dressing is clearly freshly made as it was light, creamy and not overwhelmed with the bleu cheese flavor. It was velvety and smooth with lots of bacon. I thought to myself, please don't embarrass yourself in front of your friends. Be civilized with the fork and knife.
Based on the wedge, I was stoked about their specialty entree - Steak Diane. It was presented well, but it was lacking in flavor. It was just kind of swimming in butter, and they hoped you could make the flavor out for yourself. I chose sauteed mushrooms and skillet hash browns as sides. The mushrooms were good, but the hash browns were just too oily and salty. I only took a couple bites and push the hash browns aside.
All in all, I would go back to try another entree such as the porterhouse or the filet aragosta. If anything, I'm going back for that lovely blue cheese wedge. -

Seriously, I don't understand why this place gets so much hype. If this is what passes for fine dining in CT I am ready to move. For the prices they charge the food is really not up to expectations.
The menu and decor is so dated. Maybe stuffy old couples in their 60's and 70's love this place but I never want to waste money here again. -

Regional steakhouse chain. Upscale. Four stars.

Let me preface this by saying I have been to many steakhouses (Morton's, The Palm, Ruth Chris, Capital Grill, Sullivan's...) so it takes a lot to impress though I usually find something that one does better than the other does.
Upon arriving, I was greeted with a very pleasant host who took us to our table. The inside is your typical steakhouse interior consisting of dark wood, mirrors and leather booths with your occasional table. One thing that impressed was the host provided appropriate linens based on the color of my pants. The only other steakhouse to do this was Capital Grill.
Food, I ordered the house salad, which consisted of fresh mixed greens, nice ripe pear tomatoes, feta cheese and vinaigrette. For the main dish, I got their petite filet, medium. The steak was made to perfection and came with a side of fried onions. I did not order a side as I was cutting back so I could have dessert. For dessert, I had their bread pudding served warm with white and chocolate chips, chocolate sauce and Bailey's creme. It was good, but I much preferred my coworkers strawberry cheesecake with Oreo crust.
Other then an error on the bill, which they fixed, I would visit this nice local steakhouse again if in the area.

* Steak made to perfection with just a hint of seasoning
* Cheesecake
Dislikes -
* A little pricey (but hey, as I found out, it is a high-end steakhouse)
* Ceiling title (took away from the high-end decor of the restaurant) -

If someone asked me where the best restaurant in Waterbury was, this is the one I would choose. Carmen Anthony's has delicious tender steaks that will melt in your mouth, top notch service, and a full bar with an excellent selection of wines and designer Martinis.
Sure, it's not a cheap place to eat (although the new Pixe Fixe menus are reasonable)... but it is the best steak that you'll find within 30 miles of Waterbury. If you're looking for a great local restaurant for a special occasion, this is the place you should pick! -

If for some reason you're stuck in the little slice of hell that is Waterbury, you could do worse than eat here. It's a solid, not great, steakhouse: formal, old-style, and likely to impress the easily impressed. The wine list is decent: drink up and maybe you'll be able to briefly forget that you're in Waterbury.

Review from Gourmet G.

A refreshing change from the multitude of chain restaurants and fast food joints in the area, this popular steakhouse is notoriously expensive for dinner but a reasonably priced spot to take your mother for lunch. Their signature soup is a delicious blend of cabbage, sausage, red and white beans, and diced potatoes in a spicy chicken-based broth. Shaved medium-rare prime rib was piled high with sauteed mushrooms, onions, and a thick layer of melted mozzarella cheese on a toasted house-baked roll, and served with crispy thick fries and a creamy cole slaw. A grilled boneless chicken breast, marinated in honey-balsamic vinaigrette, was served on focaccia with bacon and mozzarella, with a zesty pasta salad on the side. White chocolate bread pudding was very rich and more than enough for the two of us to share. Good food, a warm decor, and friendly service added up to a very pleasant experience. Now I need to convince my wealthy brother to treat us to one of their renowned steak dinners.

Came here with my family. It wasn't great. The food was average, the place was crowded, and is way over priced.

I love good service and I'm willing to pay for it and that's exactly what you get from Carmen Anthony's. Excellent food, over the top service, but pricey (and a la cart) so I only frequent here on occassion.
For significantly less money, and comparable food, I now go to the Brass City Bistro. -

its expensive for what you get.
big fish in little pond of waterbury.
best steak in the area? no way... go right up the way to American Steak House...thats the best steak. But i think most of the people who go to carmen anthony's would be too afraid to step in that area.
in all seriousness though, this place is over-rated, as are most over-priced restaurants. Its just food. -
