A few comments on the review by Gene K:
1] There are NO numerical addresses in Carmel by-the-Sea. All addresses are directional.
2] Carmel is a very popular destination. $129/night is not a bad price for a room of this caliber. During the high season, it's double that or more! It's always a good idea in places like this to look for deals.
3] No hotels in Carmel have AC. Neither do most stores or even City Hall. It's rare that temperatures rise to when it's needed. When it gets hot, there's usually no breeze for cross-flow, but it's just for a few hours maybe twice a year.
4] You should have been informed about the parking charge when you checked in, but it's a good deal. Street parking is limited to 30 minutes or two hours, depending on the location, from 10 AM until 6 PM seven days a week, so that reasonable charge is definitely worth it for flexibility, especially due to the hotel's central location.
Wow. What a surprise.
Like Hilary said, now this place is called Carmel Lodge. 1st of all, there is no address to this place. It's just San Carlos Street at 5th Avenue.
We got it through http://hotels.com so we got it for cheap, somewhere around $79. Originally, it was something like $129/night which is just appalling. It barely might be worth $79 at the base price.
When we arrived, we were told we got "upgraded" to a 2nd floor room with a balcony so that we can have a cross-breeze. "Oh, that's great!" I said because it was a record high at 99 degrees. Well, we open the door, and a heat wave hits us in the face like a sauna. Well, good thing, we can get a cross breeze, right? No. We open the sliding door and the door and there's no wind. Ugh. Ok, well, let's just turn on the AC. Huh? No AC. Hm. I'll just take off my clothes. I wish I got Hilary A.'s room, then we could've opened the refrigerator to cool off. There was a chocolate bar in wifey's bag that melted through the foil and paper and into her bag and all over. Yuck.
Well, we manage to sleep and awaken the next morning all sweaty. At least the cold water was cold. Imagine our surprise when we were charged an extra $10 for parking in their parking lot. She asked us when we arrived if we would be parking in their lot. We said, "Sure." Never were we told that we would be charged extra. There was plenty of parking on the street as well. I felt we should have been informed.
Also, we got ice a few times while we were there, trying to cool down any way we could. Under no circumstances should anyone stay in room 101 or 102. The ice machine is right in front of your room and roaringly loud.
Never again.
Now called the Carmel Lodge, we found a great $89 deal on Travelzoo to stay here on a Saturday night and snatched it up. For an extra $10, we got a deluxe King - VERY nice. The room was huge, felt like a suite. There was a refrigerator and microwave, coffee maker, and in addition to coffee & tea packets, they supply hot cocoa! The bed was very comfortable. As with most hotels, I wished I had taken my own pillow from home, but this seems to be a personal choice. There was a little noise from the room next door's TV and people walking home from a late night out, but all in all, we really enjoyed our stay.
Front office staff were downright perky...in a good way. At 8am the front office opens with fresh fruit, coffee, and the morning paper (we had the good fortune of getting the Sunday THICK edition too). No question we would stay here again, especially given the great price.
If you are just looking for a place to sleep in Carmel, this is a convenient and comfortable place to crash. This place is now called Carmel Lodge. They dropped the "Sands".
Although the standard room was small and had a pink tiled bathroom circa 1970s, the comfortable Simmons Beautyrest Black(tm) Beverly Hills(tm) Plush memory foam bed and the freshly baked cookies at the lobby made our stay there well worth it. Plus the staff there are very friendly and it's conveniently located just two blocks away from the main street (Ocean Avenue).
The standard rooms however do not have a hair dryer, coffee maker, or iron/ironing board in the room like the deluxe accommodations. You may request an iron/ironing board and dryer from the front desk and have your morning coffee and fruit at the lobby. With the discounted rate from Orbitz, it was definitely a bargain and I would come back there again and maybe upgrade to a deluxe room!

While this hotel is not the most modern (previous poster prepared me for the pink tiled bathroom), it was really comfortable and cheap! the staff was friendly at check in and throughout the stay. I would stay here again as the location can't be beat. Me and my friend walked everywhere with no problem! Plenty of maps and directions in the lobby too. Outdoor pool (that I was told no one ever uses), no hot tub (i think a hot tub would be a better choice in the mild weather conditions!). And you get a real key for your room (haven't seen that in more than a decade)! Definitely would stay here again!
Don't stay here !! Looking for one romantic night and got an ice box with a bed. You can see the construction netting littered around the roof of the hotel from a block away. Apparently they are planning to remodel, which is fine, but in the meantime, the accommodations were sub par. We got to our hotel room and it was freezing cold. The heater hadn't been turned on prior to our arrival, a comfy 40 degrees. Since it was merely a radiator heater, once we did turn it on, the room was very slow to heat. In fact, after 12 hours with the heater turned to 80 degrees the temperature didn't rise above 65 degrees. Add to this the fact that the bathroom was small, had only tiny shower stall, was a pretty ugly pink, and on a non-insulated wall, it was a pretty negative experience. If you need a hair dryer you have to pick it up at the front desk. To add insult to injury - not only were we freezing - you can't see the TV from the bed unless you sit up. It sits below the foot of the bed. No fireplace, no coffee maker, no fridge - no frills. It is like camping indoors. Otherwise, it's close to downtown, but since it's surrounded by so many other hotels, I'd opt for those before bedding down at the Lodge.
