This is my favorite place to extend a great downtown date that you aren't ready to end yet.

While I am normally an avid coffee drinker, while here I am obligated to get a hot chocolate.  It is amazing.  The melt the chocolate goodness right before your eyes. My husband sometimes gets their smoothies and those are really delicious as well.

I have had some of their chocolates and sweets on occasion as well and have really enjoyed everything I've had there.

The staff is very helpful and polite. Also a plus it is locally owned.

While the seating isn't huge, it has a very relaxed vibe and is easy to just sit and chat there.

I'm surprised no one has reviewed this place yet! Even though Carillon Chocolates are new to town, I'm sure they will be around for a while. It's the perfect coffeeshop to step away from the student-y (or even worse, grad-student-y) crowd near campus.

On Mondays, they have $2 lattes. That's good. This place's drinks is at least a step up from Ambrosia and Espresso Royale. Best of all, they have real hot chocolate! In general, things are a bit too sweet for my palate, especially the white chocolate. But there are a variety of fun chocolate-y sides to try and nibble on. Chocolate-covered smores, rice krispies, and oreos, anyone?

The space is comfortable, the internet is fast, the staff are generally nice. This place is at least worth a shot.

I had the Mexican hot chocolate and it was very good. Can't really comment on "authenticity"; it just hit my taste buds right. I liked that you get to choose from several different types of chocolate. (I believe the options are milk, dark, and white?)

    The service was good.

My only criticism is that the seating area is limited and the furniture wasn't particularly comfortable. I wasn't inclined to linger. This would probably be a to-go place for me.

Specialties

We carry many different kinds of fine chocolates, including fruit and nut barks, creams, caramels, toffee, and a wide variety of bulk chocolate, like chocolate covered Michigan cherries. We specialize in hand-rolled truffles in inventive flavors like key lime pie and spicy Mexican chocolate. We offer cakes and cheesecakes from Old World Bakery in Ypsilanti, and we carry Michigan's Stroh's ice cream in 24 flavors. We specialize in coffee and chocolate--all of our coffee and espresso is roasted in-house. All of our coffee is single-origin, and much of it is Organic and fair-trade. One of our best items is our mocha, made with our real melted chocolate (you choose from dark, milk, or white chocolate) and our house-roasted espresso. We're the only independently-owned chocolate shop in town--buy local!

History

Established in 2009

We saw a great location on Main Street with room for improvement in what it was already doing--chocolate, coffee, and ice cream. We renovated, we got new products, and we opened Carillon Chocolates. We're tailoring our store to the needs of Ann Arbor customers, and we hope you like it!

Meet the Business Owner: Alex M.

Alex Molnar, 25, took over the storefront at 330 S. Main St. on April 1, 2009. His aunt and uncle had run the business as The Chocolate House of Ann Arbor, but Alex had other plans for the space. He painted, he renovated, and he started researching new products. He looked for suppliers that shared his values, and he found purveyors of eco-friendly products and local folks with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and hand-made goods. He started learning about making chocolate, and he tried out the previously unused coffee roaster in the back of the store. Alex saw his store coming together, and it's still progressing day by day.

Alex is a new business owner, and Carillon Chocolates is an adventure in progress. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions about the store, drop him a line at Alex@CarillonChocolates.com
