Recently and inexplicably, I discovered that my front license plate was dangling dangerously off the front of my car. I do live in the city, so I suppose someone might have unsuccessfully tried to steal it, but in either case, it was dangerously close to falling off.
I've been really busy lately and hadn't had time to address it immediately, but knew it couldn't wait too long. So, on Tuesday at about 10:45am, I was on my way to the airport, and decided to quickly pop in to this Car X to see if they could help. They got on it right away, and in about 5 minutes it was all fixed. When I pulled out my wallet? "No, No, don't even worry about it." What?? So naturally, I pulled a $10 out of my wallet and tried to find the guy that did the work, and he wouldn't take it. After 5 minutes or so of arguing I gave up...but will take my car in for other things. Good people.
Thanks, guys.
I had two seperate issues that forced me to get a mechanic involved. One is a leak in my 01 VW Passat that is a factory defect and another where my engine light was on. The first issue they fixed free by unclogging drains under my battery. The second issue they found a suction issue and replaced a hose. My total bill for both issues was $30. I was shocked and know they could have gotten more money out of me if they wanted to. Its a big relief when car issues come up and you can take it to a mechanic you trust.

One star & that is generous!
I have gone here on many occasions for minor car repairs & oil changes and have been generally pleased with their service--but NO MORE! Recently my car started acting up--it kept chugging every time I stepped on the accelerator & the speedometer was going crazy. When I tried to reverse out off a parking spot--it would not budge. So, I headed quickly over to this CarX--explained what was happening & they looked at my and said it sounds like you need a new tranmission. My car only have 73,000 miles on it!!! Anyhow, I left it there so they can look at it--well about an hour later==they called & said--you need a new transmission & quoted me $1,600 for it--my heart sank into my stomach. Truth be told, I dont even think they looked at it.
Well, I decided to think about it & went to pick up my car. I then remembered that a friend of mine just finished his mechanic courses & I gave him a call. He came over looked at my car--and immediately said--it isn't your transmission. He took it to the shop he works for & they ran a complete work up & you know what it was?!?!? A fuse had blown!!! So, he replaced it, and the total cost for the diagnostic, the fuse replacement and labor--$200. It has been running great ever since.
SO--I am NEVER going to this Carx again!!! What a rip off!!!

One star minus one = ZERO stars
I will never again go to this CarX as long as I live.
I specifically asked for a heavier grade of oil for my old and smoky car. They put regular oil in, then refused to replace it with the correct oil, though I was willing to pay for the more expensive oil. Worse than that, I asked them to check my belt and they said it was worn and needed replacing. I looked at it, agreed, and said fine, do it.
They put in a belt that was the WRONG size; too big. Can you imagine what that did to my alternator? I ended up having to be towed, and had to replace the alternator (but not at their shop, of course) at considerable expense. I complained, but they were indifferent.
Each CarX is independently owned and operated, so it's no reflection on other CarX locations. This CarX SuX.

Wow, we had a completely different experience here than other yelpers.
The check engine light when on a while back and we being the "responsible" car owners we are we ignored it for a good month. Last time it turned out I just needed to twist the gas cap on tighter.
However, since we're moving and the bf needed to drive the car down to North Carolina we decided we should definitely get it checked out. First we took it to Autozone and they ran the diagnostic test for FREE. The oxygen sensor burnt out and we needed a replacement. So we started calling garages to see what could be done.
We decided to take the car to CarX since they would only charge us $45 to do the complete diagnostic test (Autozone does a simplified version), other places were quoting $65-85. While it was there we asked them to change the oil. The total for the diagnostic check and the oil change was $72 with tax.
The guys at CarX took a look and called us to say that we had a hole in our flex pipe. The hole was letting carbon monoxide out which is what caused the oxygen sensor to malfunction. Repairing it would cause the car to run quieter and the gas mileage to increase (my crappy car got 22-23 miles to the gallon!). They said it would be easily noticable during the oil changes we've had over the year at different shops but no one said anything - even after we asked why the car was so damn noisy (their answer? its a hyundai, that's how they are).
So ... now it was time to discuss price. The amount to fix the flex pipe and replace the oxygen sensor? They quoted us $440. The bf got them down to $350 (including tax) and the guy "soaped" our belts to make the car a bit quieter when we turned the wheel. Bob, the manager, was very gracious. He didn't come across as slimy or trying to sell something I didn't need - I've come across a lot of those types of mechanics ... I drive a crappy hyundai after all. We actually asked him if anything else needs repaired since the bf is making a long trip and he said no, everything else is fine. Surprising - from my experience many mechanics come up with a nice long list of things that "have to be done" or your car is going to combust in flames.
The result? The car is now much quieter - the pick up has greatly improved and the bf called from Charlotte to say that he averaged 30 plus miles a gallon on the drive down. So far we're really happy with the results.
Best service and fair prices! Bob Calls you! Tells you what needs done, and what it will cost. Tis is a maintenance mechanic, they do the minor works, but they always play fair. I have sent several friends there, who have had the same experience.
Not recommended.

I don't want to knock all Car-Xs, but don't bother with the guys at the location on Western and Foster. They forgot the seals on both the axle they replaced (which gushed transmission fluid a few blocks after I drove off) and the catalytic converter (which started getting really loud a few days later). I had to bring it back in twice to get these problems fixed. The second time, fortunately, I took it to a better Car-X (the one on Irving Park and Kedzie), which fixed it quickly and properly.
I don't think I'm the only one with such a problem with the Western/Foster location--an elderly woman was also bringing her car back for a problem that wasn't properly fixed the first time. She told me "keep an eye on those guys."
So, if you are going to a Car-X, I suggest to go to the Irving Park/Kedzie one, not the Western/Foster one.
I also highly recommend Albany Park Auto, on Lawrence and Hamlin. I would have taken my car there instead, had my muffler not been under a Car-X warranty.
Didn't get a fair estimate. Over twice what two other shops quoted on pretty basic stuff (brakes/shocks). An extra star because the guys were quite kind, courteous, and responsive. Perhaps business was slow??

I ended up coming here because two different colleagues I work with have said they love this place. Two brake jobs here (front and then months later rear) and I have nothing but good things to say about the service, up-front information regarding the quality of the brake pads and the pricing, as well as how friendly this Bob character is who answers the phone.

I was ripped off by these guys. they said they'd do a dignostic check of my car, since the check engine light was on. after a visual look at my car, they re-sealed my gas cap, and then charged me $40. bullsht. I will never ever ever go here again. They stole my money, and when I complained they didn't do the check I was being charged for, they said if they'd had to it would have been twice that. Apparently I was getting off easy.
Don't go to this car x. please. you'll be sorry you did
